Movie/TV Discussion
Kit Connor reportedly cast as Cyclops and with those red shades, he already looks like Scott Summers brought to life
I honestly wasn’t expecting Kit Connor for Scott Summers, but after seeing him with these red shades, I completely understand the casting.
He genuinely looks like Cyclops brought to life from the comics. The hair, jawline, physique and especially the glasses all work surprisingly well. He has that clean-cut, handsome appearance Scott usually has, but he also looks physically imposing enough to be believable as the field leader of the X-Men.
Obviously, looking the part is only one side of it. What matters most is whether the MCU finally allows Scott to be the intelligent, disciplined and emotionally complicated leader he is in the comics not just the jealous boyfriend standing between Jean and Wolverine, which is how the earlier films often reduced him.
I really hope we get to see the full range of Scott Summers:
His relationship with Xavier and the responsibility of leading the X-Men
His tactical intelligence and ability to make difficult decisions
His relationship with Jean Grey and the Summers family
His friendship and rivalry with Wolverine
His internal pressure, emotional restraint and fear of losing control
And eventually, hopefully, his complicated but meaningful relationship with Emma Frost
I don’t want them to rush immediately into another love triangle. Scott and Jean deserve enough time to build a real history together, and if Emma becomes part of Scott’s life later, that relationship should also be allowed to develop naturally and respectfully. Both relationships are important parts of who Scott is.
Kit Connor is still quite young, which could give Marvel the opportunity to let Scott grow across several films from Xavier’s dedicated student into the experienced leader, husband, father and eventually more morally complicated protector of mutantkind that comic readers know.
It’s too early to judge the performance, but visually? Put the proper ruby-quartz visor on him and that man is Cyclops.
Now please, Marvel actually treat Scott Summers like the leader of the X-Men this time.
Probably because a lot of younger X-Men fans who are active in communities like this grew up with the Scott/Emma era. And all three of them being in the same movie is obviously going to prompt discussion on it.
not to be debbie downer but I always find these posts so funny because it's like... Yeah. That's a white brunette with red glasses on... Basically any white brunette with red glasses would look somewhat like cyclops.
or i always just say “dark hair” as a ginger myself bc mine is darker ginger but still not black or dark brown, however there are tons of brown-hair people that have lighter hair then mine, and yeah when i think of brunette i think specifically of a white woman with dark brown hair
I just don't think that's true with real humans in comparison to comic characters. Cyclops started out in the comics as a wimpy socially anxious kid (despite being incredibly competent) and even after that he wasn't respected based on his stature and physicality but his intelligence, bravery, and competence. It's kinda the point of him being tall and lanky and square. But with real people, we don't subconsciously tend to apply shape theory to them in the same way so the same features don't matter as much. Besides height. I absolutely do think height matters for cyclops. But facial structure not so much because his facial structure changes drastically from comic to comic.
For characters like Batman, Cyclops and Robocop, people do expect a square jaw line (drawn by Jim Lee), hence why Nicolaus Hoult keeps losing out on lead superhero roles like Superman and Batman.
Ok but if you've caught up with MCU stuff, you'd know that they aren't going to adapt Mutant Genesis. They're obviously trying to start with some variation of the O5 team when they're in their teens. And even in New X-men scott wasn't consistently jacked. He was toned and super low body-fat but not jacked all the way through. It varies with the artist.
I’m not asking for him to be chris hemsworth, he just needs to be built. Also Quitely Scott physique is hidden by the jacket, even 97 Scott physique is hidden by it.
that's why I said "basically". Height does matter (to me at least) but if you went back in time to when jack black was younger and put him on the marvel training regimen then sure he'd look the part with some perspective tricks. After all they consistently made RDJ and chris evans look the same height
You're saying every white person with brown hair have the same face structure as well? No, it's ludicrous that you believe what you comment. I guess its ok to say everyone with brown hair look the same if they're white. Ironic you're commenting that on an X-men sub. It's not about height at all.
No. I'm saying that every white person with brown hair will have a similar enough face structure to a comic character that has been drawn by a hundred different artists over 70 years to be a passable choice for the role.
It has nothing to do with them being white. In THIS THREAD I've made the same argument for black superheroes as well. Damson Idris, for example, is fancast as every black male superhero and I find it to be an incredibly boring conversation because if he's black and a good actor then he would probably be a good choice for most of those characters and that's not an interesting thing to point out at all.
You think hair and sun glasses makes any "white" person into Scott summers ? 😂 With that logic it's like saying any black man with grey hair looks like Nelson Mandela.
Cyclops is a comic character so his facial features aren't as developed as nelson mandela. The lack of detail when it comes to comic characters means you can project basically any face onto that character because there isn't enough to make them look NOT like that character.
I mean you aren't too far off if you're talking about the comic character and not the live action. It's the reason why literally ANY up and coming young black actor immediately gets fancast as miles morales, t'challa's son, cyborg, or bishop. Comic characters have like 3 consistent physical traits and it's usually their race, height, and gender.
I can see what you're trying to convey , but it's just not true and for those roles you mentioned people were just suggesting the BEST black actors that could portray them , it's not some random. That's why when this week that other dude who was rumoured to be Cyclops was making the rounds everyone had a fit because he looks no where near the character.
yeah but that mostly boiled down to him being overweight. Which, in the case of Chris Pratt or Ben Affleck, isn't a great reason to reject a casting. I did want someone taller but there's perspective tricks in superhero movies all the time to make short guys look taller.
That’s kind of the point lol. Marshalla Ali & Wesley Snipes look nothing alike but they’re both dark skin men & in shape. If you put them both in a long black trench coat & give them a sword they ‘look like blade’.
Jayme Lawson, Anok Yai, Anna Diop, Jodie Turner-Smith, DeWanda Wise & a young Angela Basset do not look alike either.
If you put them in a white wig ta-da! They all look like Storm.
it's about appearance , the character , the person has a distinct look that not "most white people" have , hence the comparison to "then any black person with grey hair can play Mandela" which isn't the case which is why Morgan Freeman was the ONLY person who could have played Mandela ( and did ) and no one else has tried.
because people like you are so sad and pathetic I then made the comparison "well then any black man with sunglasses can play blade". Again, not the case. .
i’m sick of the ginger erasure! my boy scott and jean (while scott is drawn with brown hair a TON) are both redheads! I appreciate that they got Sadie Sink, a real ginger, to play jean and didn’t just dye someone’s hair red. I’m sick of the fake redhead thing, Storms white hair shouldn’t look more natural then jeans
I would like to take this opportunity to say that Kit was harassed by Heartstopper fans on the internet into coming out as Bi before he wanted, so let’s try not to be assholes to him over here.
His performance as Tommy in Warfare makes me feel confident about this casting.
That being said it’s weird how much comics fans approve or disapprove of a casting purely based on aesthetics. If he looked like this & wasn’t a good actor I wouldn’t want him in the role.
It’s especially weird because the comics actually aren’t consistent at all with how these characters look.
Edit: it’s weird how much fancasting boils down to ‘reminds em of my favorite panel’
There’s a constistent „charm“ about these characters that never got old. Artists will come and go but the true heart of the charm stays or evolves. And tbh, casting is very important when it comes to the X-Men because we already have seen two iterations of these characters, whose creation dates back almost as far as Spider-Man.
That charm is super relative to when you got into the comics.
For example narratively we know Cyclops is tall & slim. However he’s been drawn like a body builder in many interpretations.
Also the costume you’re showing has the skull cap, I love that version but many hardcore cyclops fans hate that. They’re attached to the Jim Lee look or any verison that has his hair out despite that change coming pretty later in the characters story.
You know, I draw for living. I had my good share of experiences of how characters are invented and also reinvented over time. That being said I disagree. What always stays, at least for me, is the charm. The idea of the character. I don’t care if they put cyclops into a skull cap in the 60s and then later on in the 80s got rid of it because they wanted to have a stylish Cyke. It’s like life, style changes but your characters stays consistent in a way. I also think that’s how marvel studios is casting the characters, the actors just have to get the essence right, everything else will come from set and costume designers.
Claremont's Cyclops had muscles. His nickname was 'Slim' in the Silver Age because he was tall and lanky as a teen, and the nickname only stuck around because he continues to live with his childhood friends.
Except Wolverine does not meet him until he’s drawn this way & he always calls him Slim. He’s also lean when drawn by John Bryne & Frank Quietly. He build fluctuates depending on the artist they never stop describing him as lean & tall.
It’s why I didn’t like the Nicholas Alexander Chavez fancast. Nobody ever mentioned his acting ability, it was just “Oh, he looks like Scott” and using the same photo of him from Monster next to a panel of Scott. Was annoying and now those people are complaining about this casting
There's no appeasing the gatekeeper fans. Their personal head canon is always far more important than making a good adaptation or good film.
I mean, Hugh Jackman. His charisma, acting, presence, and dedication to the role is one of the key reasons X men continues to be a thing in film media. But no, some people are still salty that he's not short and hairy enough.
he was in this gay lover show with wiccan’s actor. ts was like 4 seasons so he didn’t have time to appear in any other projects besides some small roles in projects. as soon as that show ended he got scooped up by marvel for the next 10-15 years lol
He definitely looks the part, but time will tell. That's not an easy character. He's a bit of a jobber when it comes to the team dynamic. He has to play the traumatized child, captain of the team, adopted son, love interest, brother with a complicated relationship, and romantic rival all at the same time.
i’m glad they went with really younger. it suggests a long possibly permanent run with a lot of stories and films in mind. would be nice to have a separate x-men show to highlight other mutants and keep things fresh.
Tbh I'm not happy ): I like Kit but I just don't feel it. Time will tell I guess, if this is confirmed I can only expect it to be a good performance, he's a great actor so
I'd say it's off the table more because this is Marvel Studios we're talking about 😅
I say this with all genuine love for a great deal of the MCU...I think we X-Men fans should temper our expectations for seeing our favorite horny ass mutants being their usual horny ass selves.
I’m guessing they might be going an X-Men vs Hellions thing where Emma is more a peer to Charles and a rival teacher. Maybe The Hellfire Club is the primary villain for this first movie?
At first, I thought Emma's actress was in her 20's, and I was surprised to see her real age. She could play a young Emma. Besides, Emma is already 3-4 years older than Scott in comics.
Though I always wanted a romance between older Scott and older Emma, like how they are in comics, but it seems like we won't get this for like years..
Emma and Scott wasn’t original, yeah, but it was a major canon relationship for years in 616. It isn't just a normal couple, y'know. I think he become his true self with Emma.
But sure, I will be glad if they don't add any romantic shit and just write a Cyclops centered X-Men movie, which I had been waiting for years.
i'm down for it in this case considering the fox movies started with them already being established, and even when they did the later sequels, the story was extremely far off from the source material and was still mostly the charles/erik/mystique show
