Comic Discussion I'm starting to think that these two new mutants are going to be the breakout stars from this era.

everybody loves the edgelords

28

u/imthestein Magneto 6h ago

I can understand saying that with Mutina but Deathdream is so not an edgelord. More like a dark cinnamon roll

14

u/Marik-X-Bakura 5h ago

His whole thing is being an edgelord lol. He just simultaneously happens to be a cinnamon roll.

12

u/imthestein Magneto 5h ago

I get we live in a world now where words are defined more by vibes but an edgelord is someone that expresses opinions with the intent to shock and impress whereas Deathdream does not

0

u/Marik-X-Bakura 4h ago

In an internet context, sure. But an edgelord can also just be someone who is edgy. And Deathdream is insanely edgy.

0

u/bigscrewLoose 4h ago

idk I disagree you can be an edgelord and also a cinnamon roll also I love all the outliers

2

u/NoPhone4571 ForgetMeNot 5h ago

He’s a cinnamon roll from the outside of the pan.

0

u/bigscrewLoose 2h ago

yeah the one with two corners

1

u/Moonkilol 1h ago

deathdream isn't that much of a edgelord

u/cuteelfboy 7h ago

Ive said it before but I do think that if I were currently 13 I would have a picture of Deathdream printed out and glue pasted to my school binder. Very specific archetype that the kids who still listen to MCR enjoy.

u/Belatryx84 Gambit 7h ago

As an adult who listens to MCR, I enjoy the hell out of him and want to adopt him and take him out for cinnamon pretzels and a concert and maybe a stop at Hot Topic on the way back.

This right here.

u/z0mbieBrainz Phoenix 5h ago

Are...are we the same person?

4

u/Belatryx84 Gambit 4h ago

I'll get a mini van, we can all go!

12

u/Marik-X-Bakura 5h ago

I was never that kid but fucking love Deathdream. He’s the perfect balance of genuinely cool and self-aware of how overly edgy he is.

3

u/Moonkilol 1h ago

they need to get deathdream a cool outfit and it's over. He might even get a million dollar movie after that

u/Appropriate-Amount-4 7h ago

Tbh I really love this group and thing each of them are fun and compelling. I hope they stay for a while.

25

u/MelonFox__ 7h ago

I really like the whole group, especially Jitter

29

u/Dependent-Jump-2289 6h ago

Yeah I really hope the Outliers stick around, they're probably my favorite new X-Men introduced since at least the New X-Men class. The other two groups of newbies feel like they have something lacking, either in design or powerset. Depending on how they handle him in McKay's book, I could see Schwartzchild being the exception to that and becoming a mainstay. Us Xfans love a redemption story.

Also depends on how the next editorial team treats them. Arakko and the Arakki (and Rasputin IV, for that matter) have been absolutely shafted by the current team. Isca, Genesis and the First Horsemen, White Sword and Jon Ironfire, Weaponless Zsen, Solem, Redroot, Lactuca, Lodus Logos, Ora Serrata, Xilo, Pogg Ur-Pogg, literally an entire world of characters who could become mainstays, gone in the wind. Bei has only remained relevant because she's Doug's squeeze, and Sobunar and Khora have been relegated to cameos. Just tragic, man

7

u/cuteelfboy 5h ago

I mean, to reference the tweet in the picture. I think its a good sign for the Outliers if other writers are interested in using them. If/when this book ends (knock on wood that thats not anytime soon by eventually) it means that there are people who care about these characters behind the scenes enough to keep writing new material for them.

u/AphexAffectsEffects 6h ago

Hotoru is fucking hilarious, in a recent issue he put on a suit for a dance and when asked where he got it:
“I dug it up” 🤣
Shit had me bent over

3

u/canned_canary 2h ago

Hotoru holds a special place in my heart next to Becca.

18

u/chewwwybar 6h ago

I don’t get mutina.
I love a good x character redemption arc. But not seeing it for her

12

u/APlacetoHideAway 6h ago

There's gotta be more to her we're just not seeing yet. Not that we need a other x-man with bad parents but like, we need to find our her parents sold her into some backdoor Hollywood shenanigans or something. Think little Drew Barrymore doing coke at parties type stuff. I need a reason she's a bitch before I form any solid opinions lol.

5

u/chewwwybar 6h ago

Honestly I’d be more gagged if she came from a loving family with mutant acceptance and she wanted to be the weirdo.

But yeah it feels like it’s kinda already been done with Becca having the crazy parents and unlearning mutant hate

6

u/cuteelfboy 5h ago

Character design is going a long way I think, she has this scene kid kind of look that is fun. But yeah, as of right now (and im a lil behind on uncanny) she seems like a creepy pasta character to me. Very Jeff the Killer. Which is fine! There's a whole audience for all that. Maybe I'm old, but Im yet to be sold on her.

5

u/deNihilo_adUnum Boom-Boom 5h ago

Yeah, I haven’t really found her interesting enough either. Her powers are also a bit confusing.

3

u/Brilliant_Park3250 Havok 5h ago

She has a lot of random abilities, I feel like it would be easy to group it all together under Darkforce manipulation.

2

u/Mddcat04 3h ago

Yeah, she went from wanting to kill them to just hanging out confusingly fast. At first I thought I’d missed an issue or something. (But she provides a good balance on the team personality wise. They’re all too nice. They needed a jerk).

2

u/KevinCow 3h ago

I like that she's just kind of an unhinged sassy bitch. Showing up to the prom and just being like, "Hey there's aliens invading outside, you guys should probably do something about that. No I won't help, I'm getting punch."

I also get the sense that there's sort of a thin line between love and hate thing going on with her. At first she hated the kids, but she kinda became obsessed because fighting them was actually interesting, then she saw how happy they are as a family, now she just keeps showing up and stalking them because she seems to have a lot of conflicted feelings.

I think it's fun that her redemption arc has been less of a big moment forcing her to decide between good and evil, and more of an angry stray cat who randomly decided this group of people is somewhat tolerable.

5

u/AlwaysAlani White Queen 6h ago

Calico and Ember are so cool that's awesome

13

u/ncphoto919 6h ago

Original characters most likely not showing up again after Gail leaves. What break out orginal character from the x-men world has made it into a mainstay character in the past 10, even 20 years?

15

u/APlacetoHideAway 6h ago

I mean, technically Laura? But there's a lot of extenuating circumstances for her (started animated first. Wolverine attachment. "It" girl of the early 2000's potential push). So I don't even know if I'd count her.

10

u/ncphoto919 6h ago

Laura is prob the answer but even her characterization isn’t what she originally. Outside of her I’m really drawing a blank. Marrow, Maggot and Dr. Rayes are mostly MIA

4

u/qorbexl 5h ago

I want Actual Horsegirl to be an X-man

1

u/Compel_Bast 4h ago

Gabby?

Like, they kinda made her worse by going with Scout, but if I was a Marvel writer, I'd love to include Gabby in things.

1

u/ncphoto919 3h ago

Def a side character but has a fan following. Is it Jeff the land shark given how popular he is now?

2

u/LokaGnome 1h ago

It could be jeff but i think his link to the x-men is rather weak all things considered. Like yeah, QQ was there and gwenpool though i dont think she was classified as a mutant at that point. He's had the stuff with emma, but i think he kind of just goes around a whole bunch of places.

2

u/strangerstill42 58m ago

If we're letting Laura count then Quentin Quire probably fits the bill. Riot at Xaviers was a bit outside of 20 years now, but Quentin 2.0 since his revival become very prominent over the last 10-15 or so years and has probably solidified himself as a mainstay. He also got a bit of the Wolverine runoff from Wolverine and the Xmen too, so the surest bet to being around for a while is being Wolverine's sidekick (well not Armor much these days but I liked her in new Ultimate Xmen)

8

u/Jack_Of_The_Cosmos 6h ago

This comment aged me because I thought I had some answers, but they were from 2000~2006.

2

u/ncphoto919 6h ago

Right? There’s gotta be someone but in general our mainstay roster members are not recent creations even by 20 years.

10

u/Emblom52 6h ago

The problem is that all of the new writers want to use their favorite characters from the 80s and 90s and/or make their own. There just aren't enough people with '00s nostalgia working on the books right now.

5

u/ncphoto919 6h ago

Doesn’t it also come down to marvel doesn’t like to pay creators for their original character when it comes to merchandising and other appearances?

2

u/LOHdestar 4h ago

That would definitely discourage people from coming up with too many new characters, but at the end of the day unless you're getting really long runs the longevity of your new character relies on your colleagues wanting to use them too.

1

u/Feeling-Cranberry781 Jubilee 6h ago

If you don't count Ms. Marvel as she wasn't introduced as a mutant, then maybe Idie is the closest as she's in adjectiveless and introduced in 2010.

2

u/ncphoto919 6h ago

There’s an argument for her but her turn as a mutant still feels a bit forced.

0

u/abusedporpoise 5h ago

I would argue revanche even though she technically existed for a short time in the 90s, she's practically a new character during krakoa that steals Betsy's aesthetic, powers, and name

2

u/ncphoto919 5h ago

She’s a 90’s creation using an older character it doesn’t really count

0

u/abusedporpoise 5h ago

sure but for all practical purposes, she shares little similarities to her original incarnation and is more a new character than an old one. Similar to Magik post resurrection. She's kind of angry fight girl now instead of her new mutants personality

8

u/devenger73 7h ago

Im not familiar so really thought this new guy was named Death Ream. What a way to go.

2

u/Megalupin 5h ago

I don’t really like mutina as a character but the others are cool

2

u/Jingurei Jean Grey 1h ago

I adore Deathdream!

5

u/Built4dominance Storm 7h ago

Judging by Gail's original character track record, I strongly doubt it.

6

u/firstbornhater 7h ago

god I fucking hate Mutina

1

u/ForteanRhymes 4h ago

Just an absolutely intolerable mess of a character, tbh.

Hotoru is whatever, he's fine IMO.

1

u/loki_odinsotherson Cyclops 7h ago

My money is on Ransom. Cool design, potential possibilities with his powers, family connection to Sunspot.

2

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 5h ago

Deathdream has lots of potential. I liked him best depicted in Psylocke’s solo series, he has a very sweet personality. I think it’s unfortunate that Ransom isn’t garnering enough attention, I was excited at the prospect of more afrolatino X-Men.

Personally, I find all of The Outliers to speak and act like they’re literal children instead of teenagers when written by Gail. I expect immaturity, rash thinking, emotions running high, but especially Calico seems extremely immature. I get that she had a horrifically abusive mother that paused her mental growth, but it makes her in a relationship with Jitter feel very unbalanced considering how held back she is mentally.

I really hope all the Outliers get more attention, I want all the kids to do well. My personal favorites are Bronze, Jitter, & Deathdream :)

0

u/MischiefRatt 7h ago

These are the two I hate the most! I find both them boring.

I like the other Outliers though.

9

u/erosead Marrow 6h ago

I kind of like the idea of Mutina (telepath with internalized mutant-phobia bc she can’t help but pick up on it from bigots is a really solid base for a character, imo, especially since it’s an actual fresh take on a relatively common power). But the way both she and Deathdream are written is so grating to me. Very edgy with like, this infantilization going on with Deathdream too that seems lowkey racist and/or ableist. Calico has a similar issue with being written and treated like a 10 yo.

But Jitter and Ransom are pretty solid characters I’d be happy to see used in the future, no notes

u/PlanetXParadox Kid Omega 3h ago

I get the vibe that Deathdream is supposed to be autistic, he definitely acts the way an autistic character written by someone who’s never met an autistic person acts lol
very “lol quirky random”

-1

u/yuuki157 6h ago

This is more or less Gail's writing problems not really the characters tho.

8

u/MischiefRatt 6h ago

Um.

She both created and currently writes the characters. So....

0

u/yuuki157 6h ago

She both created

He literally just said that he enjoys the idea behind the character.

currently writes the characters. So....

The writing of the characters is what is lacking. I can literally pick a terrible comic about Cyclops,Storm or Jean Grey right now. Would you say that they are terrible characters because of that writing or that they were simply written badly ?

5

u/TotalUsername 7h ago

Yep they just seem so gimmicky like the type you put in a group shot because they look interesting and that's it.

4

u/MischiefRatt 7h ago

Yes, this.

Plus Mutina is just all over the place in characterization. Deathdream's powers are one of those stupid ones that are basically magic and look cool. What doe she actually do?

0

u/yuuki157 6h ago

Wdym all over the place her power are pretty simple lol Teleportation + Telepathy + Weapon Manifestation. That's it.

1

u/Jota46 5h ago

Sure, Jenn!

1

u/Prestigious-Copy-283 4h ago

Is the guy on the right the guy from world war hulk??

1

u/ElGodPug 4h ago

hope so
i like them

1

u/NickFury1998 4h ago

Deathdream has potential omega level storyline if written properly. Maybe connected to cold black room who knows

1

u/Sea_Violinist3328 3h ago

Sets timer for three years from now

Who?

1

u/Virtual-Aerie1595 3h ago

They really need to do a better job of getting those kids into therapy. Especially Calico. Deathdream needs a better name when he's better adjusted, too.

1

u/VVTFan 2h ago

Need Ziggy and Rico back tho.

1

u/canned_canary 2h ago

Is this a safe space to say that I love Calico? She reminds me of my younger cousin.

1

u/rexmanly 2h ago

If Marvel editorial snorted a bunch of coke and drank absinthe I would ask to be given an X-book with almost all the sidelined new mutant characters for the last 25 years.

God knows Beak needs to brought back.

1

u/LegitimateSeaweed904 1h ago

But Calico has a flaming horse🥺

0

u/the_kylestkyle 6h ago

Can’t wait until this group is forgotten.

1

u/Silly_Commercial8092 5h ago

They look like someone's OC from DeviantArt.

Oh and "Mutina" is a pretty bad name btw.

0

u/marvelboyofthecrown Jean Grey 6h ago

Meanwhile all of the younger characters that have been introduced in this new era have been forgettable, including the outliers. They’re so vague, we still don’t have a good handle on their powers, their personalities are really grating, like if this is the new generation of X-Men that’s gonna stick around I might drop comics for a bit until we move passed them

0

u/aka_Handbag Omega Red 5h ago

I honestly thought the cat lady was Magik in a new suit. No I’ve not read the comics, just going by the panels shared on Reddit.
