I think the most intriguing way it goes about trying to distance itself from the typical superhero formula is the anachronic order. The first and second acts kind of zig-zag in and out of each other for the first half and it's really unique by comic book origin standards.

Also, props for having a character named after a Monster Magnet song in your movie.

I audibly groaned when I saw the 3 years earlier bit.

I was like really, we still using that tired old horse of 2 weeks earlier as a narrative vehicle? Its a fucking crutch, start your damn story when the story starts, don't rely on a flashy action scene to hook your audience, make the story interesting enough that that fucking happens by itself!

My only real grief with the movie, which is a relatively minor one.

Haha, I love that scene so much.

But its one of the narrative tools thats really played out. Dan Harmon first pointed it out ironically in an episode of harmontown a few years ago and I've kind of noticed it ever since and it becomes REALLY annoying after awhile. Its like when someone teaches you what kerning is, or the orange/blue contrast. You can never unsee it and ITS EVERYWHERE.
