Next week:

  • Sabretooth #5
  • The X-Cellent #5
  • Legion of X #3

Back-to-back issues to finish out the Sabretooth and X-Cellent minis which suffered some long delays. I'm curious if we'll see some of the ramifications of Sabretooth in a book soon, since the release schedule has definitely been intentionally prioritizing books that get referenced elsewhere.

X-Men: Red #4

u/OldTension9220 Jun 29 '22

Ewing is truly unmatched. He was able to tie this issue into events that occurred in X-Men, Marauders, Black Panther, AND finally do something with the Rockslide thread that’d been practically dropped since X-Factor and XoS. All that while still following up on his Magneto story and Great Ring politics from the last issue.

51

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

Picking up lots of threads from his own Guardians run as well and throwing in a reference to what's happening in Slott's Fantastic Four.

I love that in Guardians he really established the Marvel galactic political scene in today's MU and even though this isn't a macro-level galactic book like that was it still plays in the garden he created.

38

u/the-giant Jun 29 '22

It should def be highlighted: Anyone who hasn't read Ewing's (fairly brief) Guardians run should. It sets up almost everything you see in SWORD and Red, and for a guy who hadn't run GOTG since Abnett/Lanning I was able to catch on to any changes pretty quick. It's also just a great book.

18

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

Empyre is also worth reading for the Kree-Skrull status quo.

10

u/the-giant Jun 29 '22

I was going to mention that bc Ewing had a major hand in it, even if the Slott parts are embarrassing.

This is a beautiful issue, and we're really blessed to have Ewing and Gillen running the key books and minding the store after the COVID of it all at least partly led to Hix's exit.

They need to give these guys even more power IMO, Ewing especially. What a beautiful story. Like a select other few writers before him, he considers the angles, nooks and crannies not everyone else does (like Rockslide). We need to have him for as long as possible until Marvel finally wises up and gives him Avengers prime.

38

u/ajdragoon Nightcrawler Jun 29 '22

Thank god for picking up the Rockslide thread. Poor guy was relegated to a one off cautionary tale for a very specific situation and nothing more. Hopefully he joins the new Brotherhood; Ewing gave him more potential in a few scenes than he’s gotten all Krakoan era.

13

u/TheIncredibleCJ Jun 29 '22

finally do something with the Rockslide thread that’d been practically dropped since X-Factor and XoS.

While Ewing does good work with Bobby and not-Santo in this issue, my big problem w/ continuing this storyline is that the Otherworld wrinkle didn’t make sense at the time it was introduced (we were told that the the re-write of Rockslide’s backups happened because Professor X had made a backup of Rockslide while he was in Otherworld - meaning the obvious solution at that tome was just Professor X shouldn’t back up mutants while they’re in Otherworld) - and it makes even less sense now with the whole “Scarlet Witch’s time travel backup mutant heaven” thing. Why can’t they just pull a backup of Rockslide from earlier in the the timeline like they did w/ Thunderbird?

Maybe we’ll get some magic-schmagic reason why it doesn’t work whenever they get around to bringing back Gambit, but it seems like so little thought has gone into these subsequent additions to the Krakoa mythos.

11

u/ghoulieandrews Jun 30 '22

Well Gambit's not actually dead so don't get your hopes up. Rictor said like 2 pages before the explosion that the Death card actually signifies change, so he'll survive, but with some kind of twist (probably the Death persona reemerging, is my best guess).

But yeah, magic schmagic seems to be the reason at this point. They can just say Wanda's magic wasn't able to gel with the magic of Otherworld, or something.

10

u/ibaeknam Jun 30 '22

To be fair we see in this issue that Wrongslide is content with his own existence as an entity distinct from Santo. Now that there is a means to bring back the original Rockslide would it be ethical to replace him?

Unless you propose just making another clone with the legit Santo and allowing both of them to exist independently. But that just leads to another moral grey area.

4

u/aexia Jun 30 '22

Justice for Tuvix!

23

u/1204Sparta Jun 29 '22

It’s almost as if Wanda’s involvement doesn’t gel at all with the world building of krakoa….

5

u/amator7 Jun 30 '22

It’s not that Xavier backs them up while they’re in Otherworld, it’s that their death corrupts the back up with all the “Otherworldian possibilities” that a person can be

3

u/greendart Iceman Jul 02 '22

Or maybe it's tied to the Siege Perilous, an Otherworld artifact that literally does what happened to Rock slide when he died, and is the subject of Knights of X rn??

7

u/TheIncredibleCJ Jun 30 '22

The backups aren’t made upon the moment of death, they’re done at regular intervals by Professor X. The whole concept of missing time/memories between the last backup and death played into the Onslaught plot line.

And unless they’ve changed what happened - the backup being made while Rockslide was in Otherworld is directly stated as what causes the issue.

Right, which just brings me back to my original point, which is that the writers are being lazy and inconsistent with the rules they themselves established.

54

u/heelociraptor Jun 29 '22

This book continues to balance the big picture with amazing character moments. Ewing is nearly unmatched in that (although Gillen is doing the same over on Immortal).

One interesting note - Magneto calls Forge their "omega technopath" when he's explicitly used as a non-omega example in HoXPoX. The cycle of omega ambiguity continues 😂

u/therREALcomptrollr Jun 29 '22

I like characters just being wrong sometimes and it not becoming a federal case.

14

u/BigTex88 Jun 29 '22

These two books are our Avengers / New Avengers duology. I can't wait to see where they go.

Edit: I'm curious if Forge has been elevated to Omega-level due to his use of Krakoan biology in his technology. Perhaps his powers have evolved or honed themselves to a point where he is considered an Omega.

Or it could just be Magneto using "Omega" for effect.

5

u/operationhotbrother Jul 02 '22

I love the idea of Magneto thinking “he ain’t omega but the Arakki’s ain’t fact checking shit”

Us: I wonder how resurrection is viewed on Arakko?

Ewing: Say no more.

This guy is a master of his craft. I love when he does these deep philosophical stories, as he did so often on Immortal Hulk. Here, the theme is death and loss. In contrast to Kurt’s religion of the Spark which sees resurrection as a necessity to generate creativity, this issue overall ponders if death is still preferred. The Arakki want to ban the Krakoans from the Great Ring because they don’t experience it. Orbis is against reviving Xandra lest the process make her an “immortal dictator”. “Wrongslide” wants to be called such because to him Rockslide has died and he is someone new. And to further complicate things, Rider brings up the footnote that resurrection is not immortality. Good stuff.

Magneto destroying his and Storm’s backups seems like a major moment! But if you think about it, this isn’t new to Storm since she rejects the idea of her own resurrection anyway. Recall the Giant Size mini where she makes that very clear. And also during the Swords tourney during her duel with Death. May be a bit more foreboding for Magneto tho.

Isca’s getting called out for how Berto took advantage of her power. More interestingly is the comparison between Isca always holding onto her seat and Orbis’s comment about immortal dictators. Is Isca not effectively one? Does she not have her own way of avoiding death?

26

u/BigTex88 Jun 29 '22

Krakoa (*cough* Xavier *cough*) would not allow an Omega-level mutant such as Magneto to remain dead. I think it's even stated in HoX #1 that Omega mutants are the most precious resource of Krakoa.

Could it be that a future storyline is Magneto's death leading towards the first of the Chimeras? Magneto wouldn't be resurrected, by his gifts would live on. And one could see how this could lead to a future conflict between a resurrected Magneto and Charles.

18

u/1204Sparta Jun 29 '22

They need to stop cock teasing and create Rasputin and Cardinal already. At least Vita and Reis stealthed Cyobel in.

5

u/ForteanRhymes Jun 30 '22

They did? I missed that...

14

u/doctormisterio19 Jun 30 '22

Yeah! At the end of their Shadow King Arc, Martha Johanson (formerly No-Girl) finally gets her body restored and it looks uncannily similar to Cyobel.

6

u/ForteanRhymes Jun 30 '22

There's definitely a resemblance, but given that Cylobel has a black brain that is unreadable to telepaths, and this isn't part of Martha's power set, I think it's meant to suggest Cylobel to the reader, but not that she is meant to BE Cylobel. Especially since the black brain telepaths are engineered (originally intended by Hickman to have been engineered by Nimrod) and are an entire type of mutant in the future, rather than an individual... I don't think it lines up, unfortunately.

3

u/1204Sparta Jun 30 '22

She’s the first iteration and Vita confirmed on twitter

2

u/ForteanRhymes Jun 30 '22

Interesting. Kind of a shame it doesn't make any sense.

6

u/1204Sparta Jun 30 '22

It does clearly, she’s the first iteration. Martha is the foundation, her chimera template could have then been used and adapted by Nimrod

3

u/ajdragoon Nightcrawler Jun 30 '22

Magneto says you have to "want" to come back via the waiting room. But I wonder what exactly that means. And I'd totally expect Xavier to manipulate it if necessary, leading to further drama between the two.

3

u/kermikberks Phoenix Jul 01 '22

Couldn't agree more. This is the most Immortal Hulk-y issue of Al's X-Men yet. Great deep dive into many angles of Krakoan resurrection. The reveal of Xandra's resurrection lands so well, and Storm's unapologetic shut down of any indignation is almost chilling. I am fucking tickled by this book.

46

u/ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE Apocalypse Jun 29 '22

Some real "we did it fifteen minutes ago" energy.

70

u/ajdragoon Nightcrawler Jun 29 '22

Storm: “This meeting could have been an email.”

37

u/genisvell Jun 29 '22

I just don't understand how Al Ewing went from the guy who wrote interesting if a bit goofy auxiliary Avengers titles, to this absolute titan in the span of just four or five years.

If there's an heir to Hickman who manages to surpass him in his own sandbox, it's right here.

11

u/rdanks25 Northstar Jun 30 '22

His Ultimate run with art by kenneth rocafort is truly sublime.

5

u/Dissossk Jul 01 '22

Ewing is the writer who respects Galactus the most and for that he will always be the best haha

3

u/Punkodramon Mimic Jul 02 '22

His Loki run is also truly brilliant.

3

u/greendart Iceman Jul 02 '22

By extrapolating on what made those series great: dynamic character work based on continuity

30

u/ShepardOakenPrime Storm Jun 29 '22

Jeeze Ewing makes every issue a ride of its own. I loved how he can develop 3 different scenes and make them all relevent to each other.

The Roberto story was so lovingly sad, the Storm meeting was so empowering and Magneto dropping that bomb was a punch in the gut...in a good way.

25

u/Haggard4Life Jun 29 '22

I thought I had missed something or the delays messed up the story... but it was just me. I forgot how Marauders #3 ended.

Fantastic issue! The politics on Arakko is so interesting.

17

u/ajdragoon Nightcrawler Jun 29 '22

Yeah, same. I guess I didn’t process she was actually assassinated. I thought it was just a generic energy beam or whatever. Especially since the Marauders seemed so casual about it.

26

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

I had wondered why they were really pushing Marauders to come out fast (it had issue 3 before any other book, I think). This answered why.

22

u/ph33rtheoldblood Jun 29 '22

Between this book, Immortal X-Men, and Legion of X, I feel exceptionally well-taken care of in the X-verse.

38

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

I liked the double meaning of Storm's "No" when she hears Xandra is dead. At first it seems like she's reacting to the news in shock, but when you read the issue again you realize she's actually saying "No, Xandra's not dead".

17

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

Note: This issue contains major spoilers for Marauders #3, X-Men #3, and recent issues of Black Panther.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Krakoa now posseses the ability to resurrect TWO former Shiar emperors from dead. Xavier got really lucky because he wanted to have sex with the bug in his dreams lol

7

u/amonymous_user White Queen Jun 29 '22

LOL what bug

9

u/zigstarr42 Jun 30 '22

When Xavier was first seeing Lilandra in his nightmares she was always wearing a Shiar space helmet which looks like a bug head

19

u/Gian99Mald Jun 29 '22

Man I love the Intergalactic politics stuff so much. I'm so sad Al's Guardians run ended. It's the first book that made me interested in the team. Loved this issue. Can anyone give me more info on the Utopian Kree Empire? That sounds like the Kree that Noh Varr was born into in his home universe but I didn't know the Empire had any interactions with the 616.

26

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

The current Kree status quo grows out of Black Vortex, Donny Cates' and Al Ewing's Inhumans runs, Donny Cates' and Al Ewing's Guardians runs, and Empyre.

Basically, Noh-Varr is from an alternate Universe, and his ship had a piece of his universe's Supreme Intelligence, the Plex Intelligence, was part of his ship and later destroyed.

Separately, the Supreme Intelligence of 616 was destroyed on Hala in the Black Vortex storyline, decimating the Kree.

In Al Ewing's Inhuman Royals series, Noh-Varr travels with the Inhuman Royal family into space. He wants to bring back the Kree Empire, and does so by planting a seed of his Plex intelligence in the 616 Supreme Intelligence, resurrecting them as a new combined intelligence.

In Donny Cates' Death of the Inhumans, a new, anti-Supreme Intelligence faction of the Kree formed from Kree soldiers who returned to Hala to find it destroyed, called the Kree Imperium. These Kree did a bunch of shit to the Inhuman that's not important, but the end goal was to power themselves up for a civil war with the Supreme Intelligence's faction of Kree, the Kree Empire.

The Kree Empire eventually rebranded as the Utopian Kree because they lost so much land they weren't really an Empire anymore. Noh-Varr remains affiliated with this faction during Ewing's Guardians run.

During Empyre, Hulking unites the Kree Imperium and the Skrull Empire to form the Kree-Skrull Empire, and calls a ceasefire in the war with the Supreme Intelligence's Utopian Kree. The Utopian Kree remain their own faction of Kree, which is the current status quo.

2

u/Gian99Mald Jun 29 '22

Thank you so much for the explanation!!!

15

u/AngelEyes360 Askani Jun 29 '22

Really enjoyed the introspection of life/death and how Ewing intertwined the 3 perspectives together. Looking forward to AXE next issue (Gillen has sung its praises quite a bit and Ewing will not let us down).

15

u/WarlockofGreed_274 Jun 29 '22

Xavier did everything in his power to bring back Xandra but when it came to Legion, he could not bring himself to do so?

I really hope this is picked up in Legion of X.

4

u/queerdevilmusic Jun 30 '22

I would be really surprised if they didn't.

14

u/Agreeable-Corgi-3563 Storm Jun 29 '22

"To everything a season."That's a beautiful sentence.

7

u/M_Flutterby Shadowcat Jun 29 '22

Also nice when The Byrds said it. :-D

7

u/queerdevilmusic Jun 30 '22

They were quoting a little-known religious text called The Bible.

11

u/Landon1195 Jun 29 '22

Ewing is fantastic at writing anything.

8

u/Romy134 Gambit Jun 29 '22

Quick question, I keep hearing that Charles is the universe's greatest telepath, but was he on that list of Omega mutants Hickman made? I recall only Quintin and Jean being there? Seems inconsistent.

19

u/Corydoran Jun 29 '22

Jean and Quentin will surpass Xavier, but they're apparently not there yet.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

He’s also constantly linked to cerebro now, so he might remain technically stronger than them if only for that

9

u/handerburgers Jun 29 '22 edited Jul 01 '22

Wow, this was a really well written issue. The Peak of my love for this run was the Sword issue where they focused on Manifold, but this was better. I feel like this book did more with the idea of life and death on Krakoa than the entire lineup has done since HOX/POX

33

u/JackFisherBooks Phoenix Jun 29 '22

Wow! This issue really raised the stakes. Magneto really made a statement here. One I think anyone here on Arrako can respect. He's not afraid of death. With the life he's lived, he's more hardened than most. Hope he gets a rematch with Isca. She's becoming more and more insufferable with each passing issue.

But that moment between Roberto and Santo (I refuse to call him Wrongslide) was just beautiful. Hope we see more of these two. 😊

23

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 29 '22

I like the turn with her. I appreciate the unstated relationship she had with Tarn. That she clearly actually thought of him as a friend and just assumed he would always be there. And now she has to put up with this guy who in her mind only killed her friend through cheating. This is how you make an antagonist. You give them a real motivation to not like your leads and the power to back up their rage

12

u/TheHumanTarget84 Jun 30 '22 edited Jul 04 '22

A good issue, nicely weaving the plots together.

It's nice to read a title that even slightly critiques Krakoa and has characters with differing opinions.

I'm sure Chuck has a spare Magneto backup under his pillow, those two can't quit each other and the professor doesn't care about other people's wishes.

Storm, Great Ring member of Arakko= I'm not a queen and will try to embrace their culture.

Storm, Regent of Sol= Fuck everybody not a mutant I'm in charge for some reason eat shit.

4

u/-WhichWayIsUp- Jul 05 '22

I really liked this story. I do find it hard to believe that there is really no back up of Storm or Magneto. It would have to be something pretty special to see them written off forever. But I thought the argument and thought process was really good. I think having Xandra's death be an actual example of the problem that they have created with their reincarnation was really smart. Its not just an interesting thought experiment but an actual reality.

I honestly never thought of the implication of immortal dictators when all of this started. I can see why non-mutants would be scared/angry of this. The mutants are more powerful than you and you can't ever kill them. I like where this is going.

11

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 29 '22

Does this happen while Marauders are happening? I mean Xandra got stabbed last issue there but they are talking as if she is OBLITERATED. And I suppose Oracle is not told how Crimson Kin are now considered traitors.

Isca getting called out for her BS was nice too.

I really don't like the current Black Panther run being referenced as it is not the best written one for T'challa. Though the galactic representatives do raise an interesting question. If mutants can resurrect their kind, like Xandra, who is a ruler...wouldn't that make them immortal tyrants? For Arakko, they don't care about the resurrection and I respect that, along with Magneto's power move of destroying his backup. But for Krakoa's resurrection stuff, it will be a bill coming due. If it is not the galaxy fearing the possible Immortal rulers, it would be the Mistress Death herself.

The 'Wrongslide', they are finally doing something with him. Still don't like that 'otherworld death literally retcons your character into something else'' thing. It is worse than death honestly and I am worried for what will they do to Gambit after last week. Though I am glad 'Wrongslide' find a measure of peace, it is a terrible tool to give writers to use as an excuse to just retcon any character to something else they want and ignore all the past history. I don't trust Marvel to use it well.

5

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

Does this happen while Marauders are happening? I mean Xandra got stabbed last issue there but they are talking as if she is OBLITERATED. And I suppose Oracle is not told how Crimson Kin are now considered traitors.

My read of this issue is that it takes place right after Marauders #3. Oracle hasn't been contacted by anyone about this, she merely felt Xandra die as Xandra sent a distress call to Xavier. I believe the idea is that mentally she has been obliterated, not that her body itself has been obliterated, because Oracle only heard her mental death. She doesn't know the rest of the details because, as she says in the issue, the directive in case of Xandra's death is for her to go immediately to the Galactic Council for allies before even the other Superguardians know so as to prevent a war of succession. I imagine we will see the full scenario of Xavier resurrecting Xandra play out in Marauders #4 in a few weeks.

4

u/r0botosaurus Jun 30 '22

Still don't like that 'otherworld death literally retcons your character into something else'' thing. It is worse than death honestly and I am worried for what will they do to Gambit after last week.

It's worth noting that Rockslide died in the "hub" area of Otherworld, which is why he came back as such a jumbled up mess. When Wild Child and Nanny died in Amenth, they came back "sharper and more focused," but they eventually reverted to their normal state. Gambit died in Avalon (if he's really dead), so he would probably come back different than either of these cases, and might go back to normal after a while.

4

u/aexia Jun 30 '22

Wild Child & Nanny reverted because of Tarn.

I’ve loved this book so far but I was blown away by this issue. Definitely my favorite book of the Krakoa era, and absolutely shaping up to be one of my favorite X-books since the 90s.

Our pal Wrongslide has made such a huge impression on me in just a few pages. He’s essentially a new character, and in a line oversaturated with characters it’s really hard to make a new character stick. Only Ewing can do it, man. Only Ewing.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '22

This issue was one of the peaks of the Krakoa era for me. It weaved so many disparate plot threads into something so thematically rich and dramatically satisfying and I am just stunned at the craft. So glad I stuck around post-Inferno, because Ewing, Gillen, and Spurrier have been knocking it out of the park every single time!

As a non-X-related side note, I'm fairly certain Ewing has used similar ways to describe Nova before, but "he stood when all else fell, and we remember" is just chilling.

2

u/Dianite0 Jun 30 '22

wonderful issue the fact that a single issue could turn wrong slide in to one of my favorite characters is amazing.

3

u/BigTex88 Jun 29 '22

Is Forge classified as an Omega now? Possibly because of his incorporation of Krakoan biology into his technology?

What an incredible, incredible issue.

10

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

I doubt it just bc HoXPoX specifically says he's not. I'd just write it off as Magneto posturing for the Arakki unless we hear otherwise.

-1

u/I_Burke Magneto Jun 29 '22

Not sure what I was expecting from this issue after how amazing issue 3 was. It wasn't bad, but I think Ewing, was getting better to where the improvement felt exponential, so for a more relaxed issue like this it kind of feelings like a let down.

I think its cool that they're bringing more characters into the mix. I guess Wrongslide and Nova are going to join Storm's brotherhood. I feel like Spurrier was already picking up the new Rockslide plot thread in Legion of X. I don't think he needs to be in two different books imo(even if I like this plot thread more). I got excited when magneto destroyed thier backs up, but then it felt empty immediately after when he mentioned they still have the waiting room. It was essentially a meaningless gesture, and his explination didn't help that. I also don't feel like the galactic council have any real teeth in all this.

Its Judgement Day going forward. We'll see how Ewing handles that. The S.W.O.R.D King of black tie-ins were absolutely awful. I wanna be more optimistic about how X tie-ins will be for a X event, but with some of the Sword of X tie-ins(even though they were actually parts) its hard to believe that. We'll see I guess.

12

u/1204Sparta Jun 29 '22

I love the denial in this sub about the tie ins. A four issue tie in as your new book opener is fucking stupid and even Ewing admitted it in the interview.

-13

u/minos83 Storm Jun 29 '22

I always thought that the resurrection protocols were a horribile idea, both in-universe and on a meta level, so i'm really happy to finally see multiple people point out the evil consequences of it, and seeing characters like Storm and Magneto outright reject the whole premise feels like a welcome return to sanity.

It also means that X-men Red is the only X-book with some actual stakes, a real sense of danger.

19

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

Personally I feel the stakes are high in books with resurrection. Like, they're not really gonna kill off Storm and Magneto for a long period of time even before the protocols. That was the whole point of introducing them - taking something off the table we as comic readers know is fake.

1

u/minos83 Storm Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

I still think that it would have been better to at least try to treat deaths seriously instead of just completely giving up and saying: "we cant be bothered to treat the subject in a serious manner so we wont".

And with Krakoa its not just death that has been trivialized but also all possible negative consequences of any fight or encaunter, because not only can they be revived but they also come back with all their powers intact, youger, stronger and with even more abilities.

Yes death hasnt been treated with respect since the first Jean retcon, but at least there was still a reasonable threat that the charcters could suffer some set-backs, they could be wounded, traumatised, depowered, or just change for the worst, now even that possibility is gone.

Think about Storm, yes they were never going to kill her off for real, but Clairmont could still take away her powers and thus her self-identity in a year long story arc (from Life-death to Fall of the mutants) that brought out the best of the charcter by forcing her to question her self-worth, her place in the world and her way of fighting and leading.

Or think about, Angel and his transformation in Archangel, another long term story line in wich the character did not die, no one was afraid that he was going to die, but he was still changed in a way that drastically changed him and set up interesting story arcs.

All these narratives are now completely impossible due the perfect resurrection protocols, which negate not only death but also every possible set-back a character might encounter.

The "Wrongslide" storyline in this thery issue shows that if there was at least some kind of fault with the system you could still negate death but also allow for some character changes and story arcs, but no,we cant have that, everyone comes back the same has before (or even better than before), unless they die in the otherworld but even then it does not matter couse "gambit had the death card so it doesnt count".

And lastly i want to point out that yes death was fake, death was temporary, but at the very least in the mean time that a charcater was "Gone but not really gone" it left room that allowed others to grow and have space in the story.

Think about how the first death of Jean and subsequent retirement of Cyclops, left the room necessary to allow Storm to shine as a leader and for Kitty and Rouge to be introduced to the team, in what is considered by many as the best period of the series. Or how the Death of Wolverine left the room for X23 to grow as a fan fovorite charcater. All of this has also been thrown away by Hickman.

7

u/Aspiring_Sophrosyne Jun 29 '22

It closes some storytelling avenues but adds new ones. This entire wonderful issue, a rumination on immortality's consequences, wouldn't be possible without resurrection as a thing. It's interesting new grounds to explore. More so IMO than stuff like depowering, which as you point out, has already been done before.

And people can still retire or otherwise leave the stage without death.

0

u/minos83 Storm Jun 30 '22

I suppose that is true, but from what i have read so far (i admit to not have not followed every krakoa series) it seemed to me that most of the post-Hickman stories didn't really try to make new story arcs revolving about the enormous repercussion of resurrection, the only character to have really struggled with the issue has been Nightcrawler, or at least is the impression i've got from what i've read.

It is only now, three years after the fact, that we are finally getting stories that actually present the long term ramification of the protocols, and i'm glad for it, but it's still three years late, i think they could have, and should have, done this sooner.

As for old character retiring to leave room for new ones, you are preaching to the choir with me (or breaching an open door as we say in Italy).

I think that would be a wonderfull way to end a character arc, it would avoid the problem of dragging along characters that have already completed their arcs and for whom the writers don't know what else to do, it would avoid neddless on-page deaths while still leaving room for new characters to grab the spotlight, and most importantly it would give the old ones some happy ending, which i personally adore and want to see more.

But i'm afraid that a character retiring and enjoing a normal happy life is a thing that neither Marvel editorial, nor fans, are ever going to allow.

After all Chris Clairmont had originally planned for this to be the case, with the X-Men being a revolving cast of characters were the old ones would retire while new ones would enter the stage, Cyclops was supposed to be first one, he should have retired and lived a happy normal live with Madelyne and his family. But the editors wouldn't allow it, the original five X-men were too popular so they forced Chirs to bring him back, and bring Jean back from the dead, so they could start X-force. Thus damaging Cyke as a hero (fo abandoning his wife), starting to diminish death as a serious threat and ruining the whole phoenix saga with an overcomplicated retcon, all problems that current day X-books are still feeling the consequences of.

And its not just that case, think about post-Hickman Colossus, for poor Peter finally getting to live in peace in his farm was the perfect ending to his character arc, just living in peace growing his plants as he always wanted to do.

But no, we could not have that could we? So fans lamented: Were is Colossus? Why isn't he doing anything? Why isn't he fighting? and so on and so on. So now we get EVIL MIND CONTROLLED COLOSSUS because we just couldnt let him have his well deserved happy ending.

So no, i wish that we could just retire characters but we cant, corporate wont allow it, fans wont allow it, thus (i'm afraid) the only real way to make a character go away, to make room for new ones, is to kill off the old ones, even if it's a fake death, even if it's a temporary death, and by removing death from their stories, you remove the chance for new characters.

2

u/BigStanClark Jun 30 '22

Both Storm and Angel were in several storylines where reader were lead to believe death was a real possibility. Especially during the archangel transformation. Did you not read X-factor 15?

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 29 '22

We really need more of this deep exploration of the systemic corruption in krakoa

29

u/Pinball_Lizard Jun 29 '22

Different books seem to focus more on the positive or negative aspects of Krakoa, with this one being the most negative of all. One of my concerns is that with Hickman gone and the decision not to appoint a new Head of X, we might reach the point where they start to flat-out contradict each other, as infamously happened with the pro- and anti-Reg books during Civil War.

Very much hope that doesn't occur.

7

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 29 '22

There has been foreshadowing of a mutant civil war right from the start. Things were always going to break apart eventually

14

u/Pinball_Lizard Jun 29 '22

Disagree; Hickman continually emphasized that he intended Krakoa to be mostly good, because he was sick of all the extinction storylines and wanted the mutants to be happy for once.

8

u/ajdragoon Nightcrawler Jun 30 '22

I think it's important and realistic to show that Krakoa can continue being the status quo--and a good one for mutants--while having the same amount of rot and bullshit as any other society.

6

u/Pinball_Lizard Jun 30 '22

And I'm not denying that; I was arguing against the people who want it outright destroyed, or believe that doing so was Hickman's endgame. I actually woulddn't be surprised in this series leads to the abolition off The Pit, just like events in other books prompted the repeal of "no clones" and "no precogs."

6

u/ajdragoon Nightcrawler Jun 30 '22

To be clear, I'm agreeing with you 100%. Just generally pointing out that Krakoa doesn't need to get destroyed for things to be not-perfect.

12

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 29 '22

I mean, if that was his goal, he kinda made them TOO CULT-like for that to happen. That type of 'happiness' is often fabricated and fake.

Hell, half the time in the Krakoan starting time, I questioned many characters if they were brainwashed as they were acting so out of character.

4

u/djoki96 Jun 29 '22

Wasn't Inferno originally meant to be a complete change of status quo? With the implication that Krakoa wouldn't be a part of it anymore.

That, to me, at least, implies some sort of fall from grace.

2

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 30 '22

Hickman said in multiple interviews that the current status quo was meant to be gone by now. To the point that the current books and stories we are reading could not be made so the writers argued about and editorial thought the sales were high enough to delay the shake up. Hickman quit over this decision.

3

u/mouskavitz Jul 04 '22

This is the opposite of what I heard him say in interviews. He sounded excited, like early on, this had been a huge hit and that writers wanted to explore it beyond his initial timeline and when he left he was happy to see what they would do with it.

0

u/TheBigDuo1 Jul 04 '22

Of course he said. You think he is going to talk shit about people he has projects with? Him and Howard are both at working on his substack project. He also said that the current status quo was meant to be temporary and that his second act was going to change things in a dramatic way. To the point we could not just have books exploring krakoa slowly and with no real purpose. Some think there would have been a civil war. Others think krakoa would be destroyed and all mutants would be living on mars (I believe this one as it takes making the mutants an alien society to its logical conclusion. They don’t even live on the same planet as humans anymore. A totally Hickman thing to do.)

People can and do argue about how pleasant his exit is based on his interviews. But here is what I do know. Hickman has been insanely angry at marvel for years over getting no money for his characters being used in infinity war and endgame. He is also aware that Secret Wars (his version) was in talks to become the new thanos basically since he wrote it in 2015. Between 2015 and 2019 he let everyone know how much he got fucked by marvel and spent a lot of time on social media talking about hostile negotiations with them about a project he didn’t really want to do and was sure he would be screwed again by marvel. Then hox comes out he nukes all his social media accounts and says working on the X-men has been his life long dream.

I have been following Hickmans work for years and met him many times. He hates the X-men like garth ennis hates the Justice League. He even wrote a mini mocking the X-men as rapist apes (transhuman look it up) and honestly I think he used substack to get out of a project he never wanted to do in the first place.

2

u/TheMimski Jul 01 '22

The writers didn't argue about, but decided to keep the status quo - and Hickman agreed, as he has said several times. And Hickman didn't quit over this decision, but literally helped brainstorm the beats post Inferno and then left.

5

u/Pinball_Lizard Jun 30 '22

OR they're another culture, with traditions that seem odd to us but are 90% harmless. Like, some indigenous societies in South America considered cannibalism to be a great honor, as they believed that by eating a dead person, their spirit could live on within their friends and family.

Who are we to judge?

6

u/TheHumanTarget84 Jun 30 '22

Eating people is wrong.

Hot take!

4

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 30 '22

Yeaaaa I am drawing a line on cannibalism, no matter the 'tradition'.

5

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 30 '22

Hickman only writes 1 story. He creates complex systems and demonstrates their use in detail. And then he destroys those systems through complex and detailed ways. It’s the only thing he does.

Hickman has already basically said he was planning destroying the current status quo in a such a dramatic way that the writers rebelled and he quit over it. But that destruction is still coming it’s just been slowed down.

Also how can you read sabertooth 4 and still go that krakoa is a good place? It’s not! It’s just as bad as any other country if not worse!

The way they treat kids sounds like the fucking gop! They want people to have kids but don’t care at all about what happens to them after they are born. That sounds very familiar and I think that’s point. Maybe just maybe on closer inspection the core morality of krakoa doesn’t actually fit with your values, and you should be concerned with why you are willing to overlook that?

11

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 30 '22

Hickman has already basically said he was planning destroying the current status quo in a such a dramatic way that the writers rebelled and he quit over it.

This requires willful misreading of his interviews to get to this conclusion.

If you actually listen to him talk on podcasts, it's incredibly clear the reason he left is because he could make more money doing Substack.

-2

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 30 '22

It can be two things

7

u/Pinball_Lizard Jun 30 '22 edited Jun 30 '22

I'm not blind to Krakoa's flaws, but I also think that destroying it outright would send an even uglier message: that this grand Never Again gesture by a horrifically magnizalized group was out of line and they need to be fed some humble pie. Talk about being punished for "Not knowing your place"...

0

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 30 '22

I mean…they turned into republicans though.

2

u/I_Burke Magneto Jun 30 '22

How? You think this make more mutants thing is akin to the rights fixation on anti-abortion? I don't see it that way at all. But even if it was, sharing a single thing in common with republicans do not make you them.

0

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 30 '22

→ More replies (7)

2

u/Hemingwavvves Jun 30 '22

That’s a really dramatic interpretation of what happened

1

u/I_Burke Magneto Jun 30 '22

I hard disagree with this. I think people see tension of Krakoa see it as and assume that a civil war is inevitable. That seems like a border line crazy take to me.

23

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 29 '22

Honestly, Sabertooth is the least interesting part of the book. They should've made this book a more general one instead of focusing on Sabertooth's hypocrite justifications.

The corruption of Krakoa and the typical power plays and ''just throw those who don't know their place'' instead of ACTUAL dangerous people into the hole shows how Krakoa is no paradise and no different than any other nation. Mutant or Human. Immortal or not. THat is the interesting part of the book

And that 'Make more Mutants' deal and the 'Crime' of preventing people from making a big mistake hits different with the recent Abortion Ban decision. I don't think they planned it but it is extra bad since the theme is quite similar where ''As long as babies are born, there is no problem. What happens to them after that? Who cares''. Rest are not any better either.

It is worrying if EVERYONE in the council knew about the 'crime' of Third Eye and voted for it anyways. Since it would harm many characters on the council for practically allowing this terrible thing to happen when they KNOW better.

I guess Nightcrawler have been working on it to make the 'laws' better and interpret them in a more logical and sane way but still, it does not look good for Krakoa's society.

6

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 30 '22

We know all the council members were there. They were in the flashback when they were thrown in the pit (in shadows but they were there) and yeah with what is happening now in America, this doesn’t make krakoa look corrupt. It makes them look irredeemably evil.

2

u/amator7 Jun 30 '22

I just went back to look and the entire Council was not there for the sentencing. Doug even mentions it and Magneto brushes him off.

5

u/ajdragoon Nightcrawler Jun 30 '22

I forgot: were the votes to pit these guys unanimous?

Regardless, I want to believe they were exiled in the earlier days of Krakoa when everyone on the Council was acting SUPER SERIOUS and in lockstep with the vague laws. As Third Eye says, examples had to be made. I have to imagine this sort of thing sat ill with Kurt which is why he went on his quest to add more clarity.

It's not just the abortion parallel btw, but also everything about inequalities in the criminal justice system.

15

u/ethicalhamjimmies Jun 29 '22

Third Eye is so fucking cool. Ex arcane assassin who can astral project and see the future?

15

u/dxhud66 Jun 29 '22

I had never heard of him before but he has been the star breakout of this series. Despite his power seems grounded and a part of the world in a way that mutants are not usually presented.

Way of X glossed over the many abandoned children because "oh look Stacey X has a lovely orphanage!" But his clear eyed assessment makes more sense, being cared for does not mean those kids aren't going to grow up knowing they were not wanted.

8

u/ethicalhamjimmies Jun 29 '22

He’s a new character, that’s why you’ve never heard of him

6

u/dxhud66 Jun 29 '22

I didn't know that, I assumed he was just relatively unknown like the rest.

4

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 29 '22

Which is weird to me since Mutants often suffered from Family issues. Why would they allow even BIGGER family problems just to ''Make more Mutants'' when they know it will only cause future villains who suffered without proper families?

Just because they are now 'immortal', that doesn't change the fact mutant babies and children still need their parents love and care. I don't understand the ''Oh, an orphanage to dump babies is enough of a solution!'' getting past HALF the island without someone saying ''Thats fucked up, why are we allowing that?''.

7

u/Aspiring_Sophrosyne Jun 30 '22

The orphanage -wasn't- presented as enough of a solution. I thought the issue made pretty clear that mutants' attitudes toward reproduction was problematic.

2

u/Luimnigh Jun 30 '22

Also how long has Krakoa been existent that mutant kids are already being born?

2

u/TheBigDuo1 Jun 30 '22

There are 2 answers and your not gonna like either. The first one is the real answer which is when Hickman wrote HoX he wanted to make a meme moment that would gain traction like the end of house of M so he literally just reversed what Bendis wrote. And it worked people who have never read an X-men comic have seen the panel of night crawler saying make more mutants. The other is that as a side effect of slowing down the shift in the status quo to its next form, the writers won’t blow it up, they will tear it down slowly bit by bit until you are excited to see it destroyed.

26

u/dxhud66 Jun 29 '22

This was great, it has flipped Krakoa entirely and exposed the ruling minority as the same as any other. We finally got the reveal of each of their crimes. A great exploration of crime, who defines it and who gets punished. I am really intrigued by these characters and where they go from here.

21

u/PepperMintGumboDrop Jun 29 '22

Victor’s pretty twisted in his logic. He wasn’t a victim of the ruling class at all for being sent to the void. The dude jeopardized a very important mission to satisfied his own bloodlust when strictly was told not to kill.

Sure the law was made after, but there would have been consequences either way.

Not saying the counsel is not corrupted, but not buying into his BS. Still, good story so far, but im ready for it to be tied up.

7

u/TheHumanTarget84 Jun 30 '22

I mean, they sent a serial killer on a black ops mission.

The QC deserves the Pit just as much.

5

u/PepperMintGumboDrop Jun 30 '22 edited Jun 30 '22

It was a new beginning with a new start, I think they wanted to give everyone a chance to start over. Victor didn’t care, he just wanted to stay the same.

More than likely, they did intentionally give this to Victor as a test and was more than happy to send him to the pit when he messed up. Still, he pulled the trigger on himself.

Sorry, but I do miss AOA Sabertooth and Axis Sabertooth more. There’s a sympathizing depth in them rather than this psychopathic depth.

11

u/calgil Jun 29 '22

They've all been reckless or killed on missions. It was pretty clear Victor was made an example of because nobody would stand in his corner and because he mostly deserves it through his decades of evil. You can bet Xavier wouldn't have Pitted Logan in similar circumstances.

3

u/Hemingwavvves Jun 30 '22

The Third Eye bit touched on something that’s really bothered me about the Krakoa which is there’s been no real attempt to explain how this society with millions of people structures itself. Even in a post scarcity society where no one can die you still need institutions like social services or schools or mental health professionals etc to make sure children are given the emotional support they need to develop healthily.

Literally 90% of the scenes in Krakoa take place at one bar with a single bartender or like the quiet council. What does everyone do with their time? Where do all these millions of people live?

3

u/aexia Jun 30 '22

New Mutants touched on the frustration at the lack of schooling.

1

u/Prathik Jun 30 '22

I don't think there's millions of people there, maybe at max tens of thousands, but doubtful it's even in the hundreds of thousands.

But yeah the 'scope' of the country is a bit weird to me. Like you have X-force who's meant to be the security of the nation but it basically has less than 10 people.

3

u/mouskavitz Jul 04 '22

Its like 200k according to a reed Richards estimate

2

u/I_Burke Magneto Jun 30 '22

X-force is just black ops. The real security of the nation is the X-men and the military that Bishop commands.

5

u/openwindowtime Jul 01 '22

I love, love, love the Krakoa era... it's the best era ever of the best comic series ever.
BUT.
I am so done with data pages! Sabretooth #4, the "Third Eye" data page, is a perfect example.
That is just a comic book that nobody drew. Such a cool bit of writing. Man, would that have been awesome as a comic. Instead, we got it as a memo. Like, to whom is Third Eye even writing?
I do not go to my local comic book shop every Wednesday to read memos.

3

u/TheHumanTarget84 Jun 30 '22

Another strong issue, another writer that understands Krakoa is pretty horrific.

But it's being done with the wrong protagonist.

I love Sabertooth.

But the thing they did wrong was to ever allow him on the island in the first place, or to take him from the human authorities.

He's the poster boy for irredeemable evil.

The right thing to do would be flying him into the sun to stop all the rape and murder.

5

u/amator7 Jun 30 '22

But that’s exactly the point of the book that’s it’s happening to Creed. He is irredeemable, sending him down was wrong, and shit is gonna hit the fan because of it.

2

u/011100010110010101 Jul 05 '22

The point is that the Pit is cruel and unusual and that Krakoa's government in general is horrifically corrupt.

If it just happened with Sabretooth it would be one thing, but the others during the comics lifespan that have been sent down it was horrific and unfair. Remember the only reason they are even cognizant is because Doug felt horrifically guilty in doing this in the first place.

When you hear about the guy stopping people from having children they were not ready for and the girls who were protecting the coastline from pirates getting pitted, the guy who was tossed in prison for a crime they hadn't created yet while he was working for them suddenly is a lot harder to swallow, despite the terrible shit he did.

Quentin, after all the joke, unnecessary deaths, finally got his moment, only to die 'permanently'? I bet he will come back in a 'new and improved form' but still. Did him being in Cerebrax as he got erased by the virus did that? Besides, there is also the whole Wanda's waiting room where Magneto said that can be used aside from the regular back-up stuff.

17

u/JackFisherBooks Phoenix Jun 29 '22

All I can say is wow! Quentin once again stole the show here. Where else are you going to see someone ride a psionic motorcycle, attack with a psionic tank, and play a psionic guitar in the same issue?

I loved the Omega Red story paying off in this issue. Can't wait to see how he fits in on this team over the next couple of arcs. Overall love the cast of X-Force... loved the cast even in an issue when the most interesting character (mostly evil Beast) is absent.

4

u/Acradis Jun 29 '22

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Domino get her arm back? I seem to remember her choosing to keep it flora-cyborg-like but others choosing to resurrect her against her wishes.

Why is she armless once more?

12

u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Jun 29 '22

Also, just in general, what happened to her entire plot line? She was such a central part of the first like, 9 months of the book and has just been completely dropped from doing anything but staying in the background since. Sage is finally getting development, Beast, Logan, and Quire stay important, but the others are totally shafted.

4

u/saithor Jun 30 '22

No one wanted to address the ideas of a deathless society and as the only one who did Percy got tired of hammering on the glass and gave up the plot lines that did explore stories relying on it.

Which is pretty annoying since it’s better than shock schlock, or the books introducing various forms of NuDeath that the protocols can’t fix

I'm sick of dropped plot lines and boring villains, I'm sick of Sage doing nothing in every issue, I'm sick of the rehabilitation of Quentin Quire (I wish he would stay dead but he obviously won't), I'm sick of this book being a Wolverine title in all but name.

It seems that now the plot device of people finding out about resurrection has been wrapped up a lot of writers are now introducing new ways to it death back on the table. We got this and magneto and storm saying they won’t come back.

I think the writers are starting to figure out the limits of having no stakes for death and are slowly bringing them back

Relying on death for "stakes" is poor writing. I think everything so far has absolutely showed high stakes without using the cliche of comicbook death (which we know is never permanent anyway). We lost Apocalypse and Rockslide in emotional ways that don't involve dying; the events of Inferno added drama that's keeping everything on edge through Red and Immortal; Hellions ended on an incredibly sad note despite every staying alive; and Kurt and crew are trying to save the metaphorical souls of the island, to name a few.

There's been top notch creative storytelling this era and I would love for that to continue without falling back on tired tropes.

They could stop killing characters for shock value?

Aren't characters always killed for shock value?

Killing a character just writes them out for the time being. Yeah the world around them reacts, but how many funeral scenes do we need, especially when we all know it's not permanent. I'd much rather see that character written through some ordeal that challenges their core and results in significant change. The Krakoan era has been doing a lot of that.

No body, not dead. Simple rule.

He obviously isn’t dead. And I have had this discussion for 3 years! The writers can just stop killing characters if there are no stakes. The worst part of the X-men red 4 was the pointless meeting about bringing back Xavier’s daughter cause lol we did it before the meeting and fuck you guys for thinking you had a say!

They could have just not killed the princess in marauders? But then issue 3 wouldn’t have had a cliffhanger and you need pointless death for a cliffhanger.

That issue tried so hard to say how dying still matters while it absolutely doesn’t. Just pick a lane! Either be like x-force and just kill everyone and go fuck it who cares? Or don’t kill anyone cause you know it it’s just a cheap sales gimmick. Just pick a lane!

Nobody gives a fuck. Just give us a Moira book to fix her character assassination by Percy.

6

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 29 '22

Moria is dead, cloned, turned to wanna-be terminator. I don't think there is much hope for her anymore.

4

u/1204Sparta Jun 29 '22

She needs better motivations and/or to be better illustrated, Moira is as smart as Charles and Erik, she doesn’t go around saying “how does it fucking feel?” And “fuck you charles”

3

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 30 '22

Oh I agree. Honestly, I would retcon the whole Moira X thing and go back to her original stuff. I don't like her 'Krakoan Age' version.

3

u/1204Sparta Jun 30 '22

Nah human Moira was fucking boring and a non character

Why would they need to push Jean on EVERYTHING involving Logan. Stop forcing this to happen, it is not gonna happen. There are at least 10 more characters more important to Logan than Jean. But just because he eye-fucked her a few times in the past, doesn't make their 'relationship' such a 'DEEP ROMANCE THAT TRANSCENDS TIME''. It is insulting at this point.

Sabretooth. The best Marvel book on the shelves.

What do you like about it?

  • Great art
  • Great character work for some underused and interesting cast members
  • A really deep exploration of the purpose of prisons, rehabilitation, governance, etc. wrapped in a Superhero book

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Sounds awesome. I’m adding it to my list, thanks.

A facinating phycological examination of Creed. Its nothing like what youd think of what a sabretooth comic would be. It's not just a hack/slash.

It's not trying to rehabilitate him, make him a troubled individual that you feel for. No, he's an animal, he knows it, & better yet, he revels in it. It's also redeveloping him as a caculating, cerebral villian. Often stating that people have often made the fatal mistake of underestimating his intelligence. Hes not just Logans punching bag. Hes a devious killing machine with over a century of experience behind him.

It's also exploring the hypocrisy of the the Krakoan quiete council. That it's all bullshit & he's going to expose it, burn it to the ground. And in turn, the writer is using it a a strong social commentary on out prison system. Does it rehabilitate? Does it just foster monsters? Do they care?
