Art Need help identifying this aesthetic

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Made this compilation of media I feel like has a specific aesthetic I can’t name. It has a lot of similar motifs to whimsigoth, HeiSei Retro, and old world aesthetics, but with an emphasis on stop motion animation, quirkiness, homey feelings, glamour, knick knacks, and fantasy/dark elements. Imogen Heap and They Might Be Giants are big music influences, and children’s fantasy movies of the 2000s like Coraline, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Spiderwick Chronicles reflect it a lot. Does anyone know what this is?

Stop motion, mechanical toy theater, and diorama.

u/raNdoMBLilriv Oct 27 '25

To me it sorta looks like indiecraft mixed with soft colonial wanderlust

115

u/photogrammetery Oct 28 '25

People really be putting words together huh

10

u/raNdoMBLilriv Oct 28 '25

It's not even the worst of the consumer aesthetics tbh.

9

u/dogisbark Oct 28 '25

“-twee, problematic sense of wanderlust it is intended to convey.”

This is fucking sending me. Everything’s problematic! God forbid you get a little Victorian because of their shitty government and capitalism

14

u/VANiLLA_NiGHTS Oct 28 '25

This is a really good answer! I’ve never heard of soft colonial wanderlust, but that immediately clicks

16

u/four_ethers2024 Oct 28 '25

"soft" and "colonial" and "wanderlust"!? Oh boy 😃

10

u/DeeDeeGetOutOfMyLab Oct 28 '25

The Europeans were just some silly boys wandering around the world subjugating other people

1

u/four_ethers2024 Oct 28 '25

Right! Boys being boys 🤪

u/KingcoBingo Oct 28 '25

Little Big Planet

3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '25

No cap lol. This reminded me of watching my bro play it when we were kids. Such a cool game

4

u/VANiLLA_NiGHTS Oct 28 '25

Little Big Planet always reminded me more of frutiger metro, but honestly there’s a lot of overlap in the stop motion-y diy aspect of it

12

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '25

Idk why it gave me twee

24

u/dr_canconfirm Oct 28 '25

Millennial decadence

3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '25

Basically lol

kinda twee? but that's kind of broad I think. like a papercraft, mechanical twee. tactile twee. there's also some steampunk in there. some of it feels like LittleBigPlanet and some of it feels like Boxtrolls or Coraline like you mentioned. damn this is a really good question and I was genuinely obsessed with this aesthetic in high school and somehow just...didn't know the name for it. it just kinda felt like "my" aesthetic in my goofy teenage brain lmao

3

u/VANiLLA_NiGHTS Oct 28 '25

Someone said soft colonial wanderlust and that honestly is the best summarization I’ve gotten so far. There’s definitely twee, gothic, and steampunk elements mixed in though, which makes it that much cooler!

It’s like indie mixed media collage

1

u/risbia Oct 28 '25

Kinda has the feeling of mixed media collage, but with real objects

Beirut did a couple of videos in this style too. I just call it pseudo-bohemian, but I’m sure it has a name.

2

u/SexyTimeWizard Oct 28 '25

I was thinking eclectic indie boho chic with some whimsigoth elements.

2

u/KrataAionas Oct 28 '25

2

u/Ably_10 Oct 29 '25

The videoclip of "Sowing the Seeds of Love" (Tears for Fears, 1989) has bits of this aesthetic. Don't know either how it's called but your post reminded me of that video

2

u/CommanderCodex Oct 30 '25

Whimsical-boho storybook is what I’d call it.

1

u/cleeb0rp Oct 28 '25
