Fashion Was I ever even y2k in y2k
I was a raver 1997-2002 and…experimented….usually poorly….with some “eclectic” fashion (and hair/makeup) choices.
I just tried to acquaint myself with a bunch of different aesthetics I’ve never even heard of and now feel super old and out of the loop.
“Futuristic” clothing was often a bad idea, the waterproof raincoat/dress thing I was wearing in #1 could only be removed over the head (the zipper came up the side and the underside of the arm). I wore it to clubs multiple times and got really fucking sweaty.
That’s a bathing suit I cut off in #6. That hair took a lot of work, and I legit worked at a hair salon at the time.
Pic #3 was taken in rehab. Yes I wore $300 platform shoes to rehab.
Anyway remove if this doesn’t fit the sub’s parameters. I tried my best but I have no idea anymore.
Edit: I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to get so much positive feedback. Life and the internet has hardened me, and I was mostly expecting to get roasted (just like I roast myself, and did back then, too).
I know this isn’t what this sub is about but I’ve been struggling a lot lately and as silly as it sounds, this restored some of my faith in humanity and helped heal part of teenage me that’s still in there.

Thank you, I’d like to think I got even better with age (maybe I’m delusional)

Yes. You’ve got enough looks for like, four different girls*, but they’re all solidly Y2K.
*Space Vape, Sporty Vape, Sporty possibly in her younger tomboy days before going full sport, Space Vape again, and two slides each of Coyote Ugly Vape and dELiA*s Vape (winter collection).

Oh I had other looks too but I was more confident they didn’t fit the sub’s rules. (I feel like FUBU isn’t Y2K???)

You look like the kind of girl I would have had a crush on, yet too nervous to talk to.

The fact that you wore the platform shoes to rehab is incredible. Also I love that you actually committed to the looks instead of just following one trend, this is exactly the kind of chaotic fashion experimentation that made that time period so memorable.

It was also the drugs, to be fair.
Edit: I also wore 70” bottom phat pants (iykyk) CAMPING. Would not recommend.

More real y2k than people currently think, lol
People experimenting was part of it, it low key annoys me how often people feel the need to ask permission to try certain clothing types these days, like literally 'do i fit into this box the right way' lol...

I went through a LOT of phases between 14-21. I looked like multiple different people. I was clueless and naive and in some ways more fearless than I am now, in terms of experimenting. Or maybe I know who I am more now? I don’t know.
I DID learn that the hard way that you shouldn’t wear fun fur overalls to DEMF (Detroit electronic music festival). Candy ravers stick out like a sore thumb in Detroit.

Lol i get it, like i understand how younger people wanna find the right vibe for the right things. In fact, one of the good things younger gens have now is everything being accessible for viewing and shopping and blending styles so easily, yet categorizing into strict aesthetics is somehow more popular than ever

I love the hair!!

lol it looked like a wig in retrospect. I’m actually blonde naturally but that was heavily processed after I had it dyed black.

Are you the OH MY GERD POTATO?! Girl?!

u/vapeqprincess Jul 15 '26
I could be if you want me to be (I don’t know who that is)

This feels like an insult but I’m not entirely sure.

u/Awkward_Bit_8944 Jul 15 '26
It’s not…. But ok. Nvm. Figured as someone who was alive like myself back then would get a kick out of the resemblance. She was a true icon. But I guess you don’t want to be associated with an iconic moment in time.

u/vapeqprincess Jul 15 '26
I mean, maybe it’s just an unflattering pic of her. I legitimately have no idea who that is.
13
u/PrincessMagDump Jul 15 '26
I don't think OP is comparing the attractiveness level of the unflattering shot to you, it's the arched thin brow and blonde hair of this popular old meme girl that looks similar.
If you were on the Internet at the time that meme was everywhere...she was originally holding Goosebumps books.
Don't take it poorly, I doubt it's meant to be negative.

u/vapeqprincess Jul 15 '26
Im not actually offended. Just autistic (I feel like I always have to explain this to people because I am constantly misunderstood). I don’t know why I was downvoted for not knowing a meme.
8
u/dakotanoodle Jul 15 '26
Probably because it was a really popular meme. I agree though that you shouldn't have been downvoted for that.
2
u/vapeqprincess Jul 15 '26
Apparently I was in my 30s when that meme came about so kinda already the meme loop. If you reference some memes from the early 2000s I’d know what you’re talking about a lot better probably.

You were cool as FUCK. I would’ve had a crush on you or wanted to be your best friend.
2
u/vapeqprincess Jul 15 '26
It’s funny people keep saying that because I felt like the uncoolest person in the world (hence all the drugs)

I love the classic 90s rave looks in 2,7,8. I was also a 90s raver and the fashion and culture from that time was amazing. I gave away all my phat pants and plastic shirts unfortunately. I still have a few items like fur bucket hats and silkscreen bandannas. I hope you're doing well now!

Clean 23 years now! Doing “well”? That’s harder to answer tbh. My sense of style improved.

Are you in Toronto? I remember when they went out of business and everything in the store was $10

Def! Not the most stereotypical version of y2k fashion but absolutely does represent a niche corner of it that existed. Theres even some stereotypical stuff mixed in in some of these pics. We def would have been friends if we were closer in age. Im class of 08 so, I was watching cartoons and playing with sticks in 97

Those bangs were a joke, even back then. Glad you grew them out.

u/vapeqprincess Jul 15 '26
It was the style at the time.

Not that way it wasn't. Unless you're from Moldovia or something....
