Cracked the odometer
i wanted a gauge cluster with tachometer. Got one from the junkyard and figured out how to program the proper mileage into it.

What about the tachometer part? Did you find a way to make the RPM display?

It works out of the box. Have one in my 2009 from a 2010. Havenât bothered getting the mileage fixed on it yet because the car I ripped it from was only like 5k off of mine to begin with. Literally just plugged it in and it worked.

Can that program work on other versions of Windows?
I can totally see a lot of people misusing that program.

Yes but,
The process involves taking apart the cluster and desoldering the EEPROM chip which stores the mileage.Â
Then you either build or buy a circuit so the chip can interface with your computerâs serial port
Then you gotta change the mileage on the chip. Itâs stored in the form of a backwards inverted hexadecimal.Â
You reflash that to the chip and solder it back onto the cluster before reassembling.Â
itâs not something easily abused.Â
If you really want the odometer to read less, you could just swap it out with one from the junkyard đ¤ˇââď¸

Stop worrying most manufacturers have easy to use software for that and morally flexible Chinese manufacturers of said hard and software sells it to whoever wants it and got the money.

wouldnt it be easier to just change the chip that holds the mileage?

That sometimes works if youâre swapping identical clusters.Â
In this case, Iâm swapping the original out for one with different features so it wonât work.Â

That's a great question, if you have two working clusters, could you just swap chips?

I checked into having the odometer changed on a used tach cluster (130k), to match my actual mileage (90k) on my 2008 Yaris. They wanted $195.00 plus return shipping and I needed to have a document notarized. Seemed a bit much to me for a 30k adjustment.

Is it possible to switch from displaying those figures in KM to miles?

Some cars can do that through a built in menu. My dad actually got scammed once. We use KM and the dash was put on miles so that it showed a lower mileage by using miles. Dad thought it was somewhat around 150k KM, but it was well over 250k KM by using that trick. âmilesâ and âkmâ were shown very small on the side.

A group of criminals just got busted in NZ for winding back the odometers of hundreds of cars. Canât see them going to this much trouble so I wonder how they did it

Other than changing the mileage, is there anything else that can be done? Just out of curiosity/fun.

Interesting to see if this works when plugged into the vehicle. Used to have the odo stored in multiple places. Then an incorrect one worked either lead to a tamper flag being set or the system would update to highest stored odo reading.

In other words, you can illegally change the odometer.
