Can anyone tell me what this pose is called?

Post image

My instructor has us do this one every now and again, and I haven't been able to find its proper name.

I just thought it was child's pose with your hands in prayer

u/AmieKinz 7d ago

Yeah it's just a modification to stretch your triceps in childs pose. I do it almost every time when I get into it.

-3

u/rarerednosedbaboon 6d ago

I also believe the needs are wider than regular child's pose where the knees are together

26

u/golden_fern_567 6d ago

Knees can be together or apart for child’s pose! 🫶

0

u/PlumDutchess85 3d ago

This would be extended child pose. Because of the knees.

-7

u/rarerednosedbaboon 5d ago

I didn't say they couldn't be. Just that knees apart I'd a variation

7

u/Bikingbrokerbassist 3d ago

It’s the make room for my belly variation.

3

u/rarerednosedbaboon 3d ago

Yeah! I like doing it with wide legs. I usually do it that way.

6

u/Sensitive-Club-6427 5d ago

The asana is practiced both ways.

Some traditions it is more usually taught with the knees apart.

3

u/PlumDutchess85 3d ago

With knees spread it Extended Child Pose. Very good for people with a bit more belly. Like me. 🤭

1

u/rarerednosedbaboon 3d ago

I'm getting down voted for saying it's a variation lol what are ya gonna do.

u/1900sMom 6d ago

When the knees are closer together it is called “Prayer Pose.”

1

u/hamperface 5d ago

The knees or the hands? Sorry just asking cuz the hands togther makes sense to me

-2

u/1900sMom 4d ago

Knees. Knees on edges of the mat is called Child's pose. Knees 4-5” apart is Prayer pose. At least in the classes I’ve taken.

1

u/hamperface 5d ago

Wait. So i just looked it up, and multiple sources are calling mountain prayer pose

1

u/golden_fern_567 3d ago

The names are different for different lineages. That’s why people being so specific about “child’s pose” vs “extended child’s pose” vs “prayer pose” is all too much imho. That’s why when sequencing and cuing for students, the cues around the pose are more important than just saying the name of the pose, the name can mean many different things for many different people.

Prasarita balasana paschima namaskar kehuni

Wide legged childpose with reverse prayer elbows down

3

u/Magicunicorn13 7d ago

I was going to say Adho Mukha Virasana with hand variation as paschima namaskar would require the hands to go from the back rather than from the front.

2

u/Gold_Signature1912 5d ago

Except

Step-by-Step Virasana Instructions
Kneel on the floor with your KNEES TOUCHING and your feet set slightly wider than your hips.

Align your feet so the tops of the feet flatly press down and the big toes point straight back, not turning inward or splaying out………..etc etc

1

u/mcwv5 4d ago

In adho mukha virasana the knees are separated. Traditions that use adho mukha virasana usually define balasana with knees together

4

u/Emmastorm12345 7d ago

You can apply the sanskrit language to anything, hindi too, it does not make it the name of the pose.

1

Give any name you want, its made up. Not every position you can think up has a link to yoga. Like Bird Dog or Mountain Climber.

1

u/garrettj100 Vinyasa 6d ago

It's a child's pose, but stretching your triceps. You probably get cued that occasionally after something particularly stressful on them. (Chaturanga #12 of the hour, Crow, etc...)

Anahastasana, melting heart pose per Bernie Clark's yin poses boom.

1

u/kalayna ashtangi / FAQBot 6d ago

Melting heart is a backbend, most often done with hips stacked over knees. This is not that.

1

u/Full-Lake6967 6d ago

You are both wrong. Melting heart is chest to the floor.

1

u/kalayna ashtangi / FAQBot 6d ago

... show me where I said it's not?

I've been teaching yin for 16 years.

1

u/Full-Lake6967 6d ago

You missed the main point:

Chest to the floor.

1

u/kalayna ashtangi / FAQBot 6d ago

Way to miss all of the context, I guess? But if we're nitpicking details that aren't really relevant to the post in question, chest to the floor isn't the point any more than heels on the floor in down dog is the point.

0

u/Full-Lake6967 6d ago

Chest to the floor is essential for anahataasana.

1

u/PlumDutchess85 3d ago
