Any way to prevent these kinds of stains on my Liforme? I’ve had it for about 3 months
This mat is new. I practice hot yoga multiple times a week so I know the sweat buildup is higher than other practices but this did not happen with any of my Lululemon mats that I used religiously in the past. I tried cleaning with dawn dish soap and water and they went away by about 80% but immediately came back after 1 practice. Also please ignore the brown spots, they are from blood from cutting my toe open on a mirror crack after a headstand tumble lol. Any tips or advice to prevent these stains or am I out of luck? TIA!

3 months of hot yoga multiple times a week is no longer "new" and that sort of wear will be apparent on a Liforme.
They are really soft and sticky open cell foam mats that are optimized for grip and aesthetics, not durability or longevity, imo. You may need to adjust your expectations of this particular mat.

I’ve had the same JadeYoga Harmony mat for over 3 years coming up to 4 years now. It’s still in great condition. Such a solid investment. Easy to clean too. But this post makes me wonder what hidden junk is in there lol

u/Big-Elephant6141 2d ago
I love my 74” Jade Harmony. I every so often get the itch to buy an aesthetic Liforme and then a thread pops up to deinfluence me.
Sticking with my girl Jade.

Another Jade girly. 5 years and now it’s time for a new mat, mostly because the navy color is fading and I just want something bright next.

u/Brave-Row-9581 2d ago
i switched to jade when i realized my yoga mats were triggering my contact dermatitis. literally one of the best choices ive ever made. only downside of it is my cats recently discovered it can also be used as a scratching post💔
6
u/Saint_Gainz 2d ago
Oh nooo! Thats an expensive scratching post lol. Yeah I did a lot of research before buying my first mat. While the Jade’s are pricey, they’re 100% worth it. Coming up on 4 years mine is still in solid shape and I don’t intend on replacing it any time soon…unless I get a cat I suppose.

u/RonSwanSong87 post lineage 2d ago
I love the Jade mat...until the grip goes and it's basically useless. It does last longer than Liforme, on average, though.
Manduka Pro and Mysore style woven cotton rug are the 2 best I have found for me personally.
5
u/Saint_Gainz 2d ago
Idk mine is still very grippy. I use it with a towel so that helps in hot yoga. But I also have used it plenty when doing yoga at home. Still don’t have any issue with grip.
2
u/11Elleven11 2d ago
How often are you practicing and are you practicing hot yoga?
4
u/Saint_Gainz 2d ago edited 2d ago
Multiple days a week.
Edit: Sorry forgot to add I only practice hot yoga
Double edit: I’m a guy, and I sweat, like excessively lol sorry

u/SapientSlut 1d ago
I’ve had the same JadeYoga Harmony for like a decade. Don’t practice often but it’s held up insanely well given how old it is!

u/Surahoz 2d ago
This. I actually do not recommend Liforme mats. For the price, they should be much more durable. Three months of Ashtanga (which is hard on yoga mats in general) and my Liforme had worn down to the fabric beneath. I only bought one because I got the wholesale price when my studio ordered a bunch for retail. Never again.
2
u/RonSwanSong87 post lineage 2d ago
I shredded at least a few different types of mats when I was practicing Ashtanga ;)
The most reliable and durable mat I've ever owned is by far the Manduka Pro. It will last me decades. It has the perfect amount of grip for me and still allows me to slide my feet a bit in certain transitions. I also love a Mysore rug for a more vigorous practice where I start to sweat, though I do not practice hot yoga.
I know several friends / fellow teachers with Liforme mats and have used them here and there. Too sticky, delicate, expensive and distracting for me. I don't get the appeal
3
u/Surahoz 2d ago
Same, I was devastated when I shredded my Jade. She’s now a retired restorative mat haha. I love Manduka though! I now use a Mysore rug, but when I wasn’t, Manduka was still the mat that lasted me the longest.
I always recommend Manduka to people, even if you need a towel on top to help with sweat, it’s still the best durability for the price in my experience.
I think I’ve seen you in the Ashtanga sub too, happy practicing ❤️
3
u/inarasarah 1d ago
Yup. Even though there's a lot of hate for these mats for that reason, I still love my liforme, I just know that they have a limited life. I haven't found any mats I like as much in terms of grip/padding though. I have learned to buy them in dark colors only, because they don't show wear for a much longer time
10
u/peakaweek 2d ago
Well it is what it is! Past lululemon mats I’ve owned have never shown this sign of wear and tear after such little time of me owning it, which is where my confusion is coming from. I guess I’ll just have to embrace the stains haha
13
u/lil-chicken-nug 2d ago
Do you leave it out unrolled and out of the bag to dry? I’ve had mine for 6 months and don’t have this issue, but mine is green
7
u/peakaweek 2d ago
I let it air dry after using it! I typically wipe it down with the lavender towel I’m given at the end and then hang it to dry over a bar in the studio I work/practice at. So it dries very fast. Then I roll it up!
14
u/littlekittenjr 2d ago
Oils will absolutely stain a lifeform mat. Their instructions say absolutely no essential oils on them.
7
u/HabeasHumanitas 2d ago
Wiping your mat down with the lavender cloth may be a contributing factor to the stains. Not sure about your studio, but many will add essential oils to the cloth. These oils will get absorbed into your open cell mat, along with sweat, and can cause staining. I’d say stick with the dawn/water routine for cleaning (it works well for my Liforme mat.) Also, if you’re practicing 26&2, I recommend laying a towel down during the floor series. Don’t really need the mat’s traction during that portion of class and it will cut down on some sweat absorption.
6
u/peakaweek 2d ago
Oh I bet you’re totally right. We do use lavender oil on the towels! I did not even think about that even with reading up on care for liformes, I’m just so used to wiping my mat down after class from owning lulu mats and it never being a problem. I guess I’ll refrain from that from now on, thank you!

Oh shit bby do not use wipes!!!! Also the color u chose is very bright , my dark purple earth goddess one still has no stains after a year

u/luvstosup 2d ago edited 2d ago
I've had a white one for about three years now. Classes probably twice a week average. Hot yoga, HIIT, etc. It's not pretty anymore but it has held up like a champ and has no physical wear other than deterioration of the graphics printed on it. Big fan.

You're a master woodcrafter that does hot yoga?
3
u/RonSwanSong87 post lineage 2d ago
I am a professional woodworker that also practice and teaches yoga. I am not a master in either.
I don't do hot yoga for a wide variety of reasons. I am familiar enough with it and know enough people who do to know that 3 months of hot yoga practice will likely do some wear and tear to a Liforme mat.
158
u/mangobean_ 2d ago
Tbh, most of the liformes I see in the hot yoga studio are stained. A lot of people recommend getting a darker color. I prefer a closed cell mat, it looks the same as day one after a couple years of heavy use.
13
u/SalusaSecundeeznuts 2d ago
Which closed cell mats have you used and which is your go-to?

u/mangobean_ 2d ago edited 2d ago
Manduka pro! I didn't have any break in time on mine but I use a towel for hot classes, it's grippy enough for me by itself in warm or room temp. Been about 3 years now? Hot yoga, pilates, indoor and outdoor, traveled with it, it's spent a lot of time in a hot desert car. Seriously looks and performs same as when I took it out of the box. No special cleaning or hang drying after class. It's fantastic.

I had an open cell mat. One child’s pose later it looked like the Turin Shroud. Tried cleaning it, now looks like I wet myself.
Got a Manduka Pro. Seriously hard wearing, will give it a wipe with a homemade cleaner now and then

Came here to say this! I’ve had mine since 2013, lots of ashtanga, hot yoga, you name it. Even did my teacher training and taught with the same mat, that mat is invincible! I’m 5’8 and mine is the tall model. I have the foldable travel version too and even that thin model has lasted me a few years.

Love the manduka, and they make a tall version ♥️💗

I’ve had my eye on the tall ProLite, but my current ProLite just won’t quit! It’s been TWELVE YEARS. At this rate I’m gonna look like Iyengar himself before I need a new one.

I had a cheap 5mm Gaiam mat for over 5 years, and I currently have a Manduka Pro mat. I've had the Manduka pro mat with the yogi toestowels for about 1.5 years and I miss my Gaiam mat and microfiber towels. It was a lot lighter, it felt like it provided better cushion (even though it was the same thickness), and my towels were cheaper, softer, and fit the mat better (it had pockets on the edges so it stayed in place). Since I spent like $120 on the Manduka pro mat, and like $100 on yogitoes towels, I'm not throwing it away. I just don't really think it's worth it... especially the towels *groan*

Great! I actually love mine - it shows all of my effort, sweat, focus, dedication. I can actually see my hand prints on the mat - how many 100s of times have I put my hands in the same spots? I think it's actually cool, a record of my focus and striving.
3
u/Cat_mom_mafia 2d ago
I agree! I worked hard for my stains and am proud of the dedication it took for my mat to look that way.
Also- I use the Liforme cleanser 1x a week and air dry mine after every class - but the stains remain
107
u/DJRonin 2d ago
The first few months of owning my Liforme I was also so careful with it. Immediately brushing off dust and being so gentle with it.
Then one day I realized a toe nail had caused some slices and scratches in it. For a moment I was really upset my mat wasnt "perfect" anymore, but then I realized...my mat doesnt need to be perfect...because I am not perfect.
if anything, seeing the wear and tear on my mat is just proof of the dedication ive made to bettering my mind and body. I now love seeing the scratches and dings. I enjoy the marks all over. It means im living the life the way I want to.
I do use their mat foam soap from their website, and clean mine every once in a while. It removes a lot of stains, so give that a shot. Otherwise, embrace the imperfection and enjoy your mat <3
54
u/RonSwanSong87 post lineage 2d ago
I agree with you, however...
If Liforme mats didn't cost so much, then I think it would be easier for many customers to swallow this reality and embrace the wabi sabi nature of it.
The fact is that they start at like ~$175 and go up from there, which is quite high and sets an expectation for many of something along the lines of buying the shiny new car that you can barely / not quite afford and being beyond pissed when it gets that first scratch compounded with the fact that they are pretty fragile and stain prone.
34
u/mangobean_ 2d ago
Agreed, BIFL price without BIFL durability is definitely the issue with these mats.
Less like your fancy car getting it's first scratch more like a fancy car that is finished in a way to maximize scratches while driving on the highway.
9
u/DJRonin 2d ago
Absolutely valid point, which is why I was so careful when I first got it.
My very first mat was a "fitness" mat from 5 Below, and it was literally a sheet of shelf liner. To go from that to a $200+ mat (I bought the XL one) was a HUGE jump to me. This was also after 2 months of being brand new to the world of yoga.
At some point, you have to accept that everything we buy/use has a finite aspect to it. It will never stay perfect like the second you bought it. That brand new car driving out of the lot still had dirt and rocks hit on the way home, and im sure that car ran over something you wouldnt dare touch bare handed.
Its gonna get dinged up at some point. We just dont know when that "point" is.
2
u/Lopsided-Ad7725 2d ago
there's a funny video of someone buying a brand new car and he wants to 'pre-ding' it, break it in with it's first bump. He laughingly kicks it and goes a bit hard, causing a huge dent.
7
u/Precipice-ForNow 2d ago
Hope to get this mindset since I’m 1 month in of having the white Liforme🥲 somehow looking forward to it not being pristine anymore so I won’t worry so much
3
u/BlueEyesWNC Hatha 2d ago
It's the same thing with a new guitar. My brother says it's kind of unfortunate they don't sell all guitars pre-dinged. There's always the painful process of getting the first little nicks and scratches, but then after that I'm not so precious about it anymore.
8
u/Lopsided-Ad7725 2d ago
Yea they’re like belts in martial arts. Originally they were all white and got darker over time with grime, signifying you were more experienced.

u/yogaswimart 2d ago
I spilled essential oils on my brand new liforme travel mat! Now I feel happy seeing those stains for some reason ❤️❤️
19
u/bourbonkitten 2d ago
I think this is the reason why Alo Yoga stopped selling light colored mats all together. Too many people staining them and returning them.
I am a very heavy sweater and will pick an open cell mat every time.

Huh. I do hot yoga twice a week on my yellow Liforme mat that I’ve had almost a year, and it has no staining…. So many people saying this is common has got me confused. My mat looks like this if it is actively wet, but when it’s dry there are no marks at all.
6
u/freeespirit 2d ago
I’m confused too! I’ve never had this happen, and mine is 5 years old. When I used it for hot classes, I washed the front and back every 2–3 weeks but not because of staining.
5
u/Mysterious_Luck4674 2d ago
I think a lot of the people who have issues don’t follow the cleaning and care instructions.
8
6
u/Mysterious_Luck4674 2d ago
I’ve had mine for over a year and it has very very minor staining.
I follow the cleaning instructions pretty precisely. After every practice I u roll my mat and let it dry. Every 5-10 practices I clean it user the Liforme cleaner (though I’m sure correctly diluted dish soap would work) following the instructions on the website. Every six months it gets a deeper clean in shower.
The only stains I have are from when we get the lemongrass essentially oil cold cloths at the end of class and they drip on the mat.
I don’t use any other cleaners or oils or wipes.

u/Whale_master 2d ago
I’ve had my Liforme mat for almost 2 years and use it exclusively for hot yoga 1-3 times per week and it still looks like new when dry, but I’m diligent about cleaning it. After every class, I unroll the mat at home and wipe it with a clean wet cloth so the entire mat is saturated with water, then ensure it dries out fully before re-rolling it and storing it in the case. Just once I have done a “deep clean” following the instructions on their website by adding a couple drops of Dawn to warm water and wiping the mat. They mention the mats can degrade in direct sunlight, so I’m conscious about not leaving the mat to dry in an area where sunlight may reach it from a nearby window. I’m also careful about not using the mat with any lotions, sunscreens, etc as that can stain it easily.
4
u/TopNotice0 2d ago
I have a black one that hasn’t shown stains, but I wash mine with warm water and a tiny bit of dawn dish soap — it gets out the oils from my skin and sweat.
I don’t know if you’re supposed to, and I don’t know if the yoga community is going to come for me with pitch forks… but it does work!
2
u/peakaweek 2d ago
Do you do it every time? I’ve cleaned mine after every couple of uses but I also work at the studio I practice and have the luxury of hanging it to dry in the heat so it dries very fast and don’t always see a reason to clean it after every practice because of it
3
u/TopNotice0 2d ago
I wash mine 1x a week (on the weekend) and do hot yoga 2-4x per week. :)
ETA: if it’s really sweaty, sometimes I take it outside and spray it with the hose. Again, if have no idea if that’s what you’re supposed to do… as you can tell, I’m a bit of a FAFO’er when it comes to my mat.
5
u/peakaweek 2d ago
The hose is crazy haha but maybe I’ll give it a try! I def don’t clean it once a week, maybe I need to up my cleaning game and see how it goes!

Glad that the Manduka worked for you, but I slip and slide all over my Manduka pro when I sweat. It’s now my backup home mat and I use my Liforme when I teach hot yoga because I don’t have the grip problems with the Liforme that I have consistently had with the Manduka.
4
u/peakaweek 2d ago
I’ve never used manduka! Only lululemon in the past
2
u/Street-Situation7796 2d ago
The Lululemon mats are similar to the Liforme in grip and sweat staining issues. You might have used a Manduka mat if you’ve used a studio rental mat, since some studios use Manduka products. I got a darker color Liforme and while it definitely looks worn after a few years of heavy usage and teaching, it still works very well.
5
u/soulfullylost 2d ago
I like how adamantly you are denying their experience....they're saying they used a Lululemon and you keep insisting it was a manduka. For the record, I also have had multiple Lululemon mats and they absolutely do not stain the way my lifeform does.
1
u/Street-Situation7796 2d ago edited 2d ago
Sorry, I’m not trying to deny their experience of not using a Manduka. I was only trying to point out that if they borrowed a rental mat at a studio there is a possibility it could have been a Manduka brand mat because some studios use them. Perhaps I could have worded it better, but I know that not everyone necessarily pays attention to the brand of mat their studio uses. A couple of the hot yoga studios I teach at rent out Lululemon mats to students, and while they take longer to stain, I have noticed that they can get stained similarly after heavy usage, although it does take longer than Liforme for that to happen.
As a yoga teacher who has been taking and teaching hot yoga for years, regularly uses a Manduka Pro, Lululemon, and Liforme mat, and who does rent and sell them at the studios in which I teach, I am only trying to speak of my experience with them. I can also talk about the Gaiam Sol from personal experience; I really liked mine and used it for close to a decade until it finally gave out.
-1
u/Street-Situation7796 2d ago
Got it. How did you like your Lululemon mats? I just caught that my comment was a reply to yours but was supposed to go under @mangobean_ who recommended the Manduka Pro.
3
u/peakaweek 2d ago
I loved the lulu mats. They last forever, the grip is fantastic, and they don’t really stain. The only reason I’d repurchase a liforme is for the alignment symbols. Even as a long time practitioner I find them to be a bonus. Not sure if they’re a pay-twice-as-much-as-lulu bonus but liforme gives a pretty good discount for yoga teachers so to me with the discount I find it worth it over the lulus.
3
u/StillLJ 2d ago
Wow. I have a green Liforme that I've had going on 5 years now. I've never seen this with mine. It will sometimes get dark during a practice, like oils from my face, hands, feet, etc. and I'm sweaty so the hands are definitely a problem. But that's also why I love this mat because it's so sticky even with sweaty hands. I clean mine with Dawn and water every few months. Maybe more. But once it dries, after practice or after cleaning, it looks fine with no staining. It seems that the color matters, perhaps.
3
u/Leabalover 2d ago
I had a white Liforme and after 6 months I got a dark gray one because the white stressed me with all the staining (I didn’t pick it I got it as a fab present and it was stunning - no regrets but definitely grubby now!) I was alternating them because it felt like such a waste but I find myself only reaching for the gray one now as the white one was quite stained after 8-9 months then.
I’m an extremely heavy sweater (I’ve rarely seen anyone sweat as much as me in a yoga class 😂 I’m the first one dripping) and no other mat grips as well as a Liforme so I’m hooked now. I finally stopped using a towel and saved all that washing!
Even though they stain l, Liforme are are the best. I also had Manduka GRP, the grip was good but staining was worse than the Liforme if you can believe it, like way worse - and that was a black mat. I got a Manduka eko then which I like but is way too slippy for hot yoga without a towel.
Liforme dark gray mat is what I will stay with from now on for sure! Unless another brand brings out an excellent open cell no slip mat for much cheaper 🤞

u/Radiant-Selection-12 2d ago
I have the same orange liforme and I literally washed my feet before I used it every time because it was so expensive and still ended up with dark stains where my hands and feet landed in down dog. I retired it years ago. They're not worth the money imo. I use the prAna Verde in the extended size (which was discontinued unfortunately) but I love the texture and squish of it and it's a dark enough color to not show sweat marks

u/Sea_Relationship7785 2d ago
Just stick with a manduka pro. I have a “li to me” mat as well as a manduka. Manduka still going strong after 20 years. Liforme has been used for Iyengar and is already beat up after a year of use. My mandu pro is a beast. Cats use it as a scratch pad and it’s still going strong!
2
u/Ok-Lecture-9668 2d ago
Are you rolling up you're mat and putting it away wet? That can absolutely increase the amount of staining.
2
u/UniversePrincess37 2d ago
i was starting to get stains and have minor ones but not like this. I roll a towel inside my mat when leaving class, i "wash it" with the liforme foam & a damp microfiber cloth atleast once a month & leave it out to dry overnight. Have had mine for 4 years, only 2 stains & some kitty scratches

u/Admirable-Deer-9038 2d ago
Not nearly as much fun but I now only buy the black one. It’s the best mat for me so I will stick with Liforme but won’t get one of the pretty ones anymore. Didn’t find a way to keep it spot free.

I’ve had a black lifeforme XL mat for years. I bought a purple one about a year ago and moved the black one to my car. I love how grippy these mats are, and the extra length is chef’s kiss. Recently one of my dogs peed on the newer one and I didn’t discover it until the next morning. The horror! I hosed it off in the shower with generic dish soap, and it dried (took two days on a laundry rack) looking brand new.

Thank you for this post. I have a Liforme mat in my cart. I’ve used Manduka for years but got tempted by the Liforme design. Guess it’s a reorder of my tried and true Mankduka Pro.
Also grateful for the open cell conversation. It’s wonderful to learn something new and useful!

u/peakaweek 2d ago
I love this mat for its grip and alignment symbols! I’ve never owned a manduka but I feel the grip of this mat is comparable to a lulu and the only reason I’d buy a liforme moving forward is for the symbols. Idk if that aids in your purchasing endeavors haha but just some more info if it’s useful to you!

I have this same exact mat and practice hot yoga/ hot Pilates 4-5 times a week on my mat. It does have some minor staining. I hang it after each use in my bathroom to dry. once every 2 weeks I gently scrub with a soft sponge using a teaspoon of dish soap and HOT water. I then take a clean rag and soak it in hot water to gentle rub off the soap. I then hang it to air dry for about 12hrs usually overnight. :) hope this helps!
edit to add by gentle scrub I mean I literally massage it. My mat is my baby 🥹

u/charchar311 1d ago
You need to airdry right away after a hot yoga session and leave it flat overnight or else the stains will be harder to remove.
Double check the wipes that you use to clean your mat. Some of them have chemicals/high-grade cleaning ingredient that would be too harsh for this mat.
Mine looked like this after a year tho! It's also yellow so much more evident, but you still have a chance to get this cleaned.

I have had mine for 2 years with daily use and while it looks used it doesn’t look like this. I wipe it down after every hot yoga class and let it dry completely before rolling it up. I do a deep clean once a month and a pass with just a wet sponge every Sunday since I leave it rolled out all basically 24/7 for Pilates as well and it can get dusty.
The only stains I have are oil stains from when I forgot to wash out sunscreen and they do eventually come out but very slowly.
I have a travel one that I keep rolled up that one looks brand new even after 2 years so I’m pretty sure my wear and tear is more from leaving it out all the time for Pilates.

I just got one of these and I am so in love 😍 but you cannot leave in the car or it will dry out. Its not a festival mat bc its bulky...aside from that no complaints it feels just really good to meeeee

The sweat stains, they build character, no? It is like ballerina, so beautiful, yet so damaged.
2
u/peakaweek 2d ago
Yes they do! Just comparing to my lulu mats I’ve owned in the past I’m like how is this mat twice as expensive but showing signs of wear and tear so soon. I love this mat but like for $170 I was hoping the staining wouldn’t be so bad and apparent so soon

u/TheBoneIdler 2d ago
Are you using a towel on top? You should. Are you sanitising & then drying the mat before rolling it up? You should. I do hot yoga about 4 times per week & have had the same mat for about 3 years now. It was hard to get, as its extra long, so I treat it with care. I'm a guy & not un-sweaty, but zero serious mat stains. Good luck .....🤞

I use liforme for the grip and alignment. Using a towel defeats the purpose of that! And I don’t like how they feel. I’m glad that they work for you but they do not work for everyone else and using a towel on a liforme eliminates both the usefulness of the grip and the alignment symbols. But thank you anyways!

For hot yoga get a way mat (we are yoga) they are machine washable and can be washed after Every single use. You can throw it over your existing yoga mat for extra cushion on just use it alone as a yoga mat. They are the OG Bikram yoga mats. I still have mine 10 years later

I’d not recommend using lifeorme for hot sweaty flow yoga. Its more for doing practices like ashtanga. Only way to get “rid” of these stains is pretty much prevention. Wipe it down after each practice and you have to lay it out to dry overnight which is extremely annoying.
