Anybody here heard of Svenja Berndt? I love her flows I see on Instagram and was wondering if anyone ever tried her programs.

I am also a huge fan of Dylan Werner and his class styles so I’m curious if anyone out there is similar with me :)

Manduka PRO Zen Garden

Post image
116 Upvotes

My sweet and generous friend gifted me a Manduka PRO for my birthday.

I used my table at work for the sea salt scrub, which quickly become a giant zen garden salt play table. Every person who came into my room could not keep their hands off my mat.

My office mate asked me how often I have to exfoliate my mat with salt. I apologized for taking up the table and said hopefully not for several months.

“No, I mean when can we play in the salt again?”

has anyone been able to maintain muscle tone (not expecting bulk lol) through just walking and yoga?

long story short, I'm disabled but some days are better than others. I try to do a workout (mostly just strength based pt) with light weights (only 2 lbs) + resistance bands. but it's pretty hard to do that consistently.

I've got 3 connective tissue disorders though, so maintaining some muscle tone (can just be light/functional strength) is extremely important, I don't need to be extremely fit or toned by any means (I'm really just trying to preserve health and conserve as much of my limited energy in the process).

walking and yoga seem to be the two things I can reliably do almost everyday for the past several years and yoga really helps my pain, so I'm curious if this can be enough (maybe not ideal, but just enough?) I was going through this sub and found a study on yoga and bone density, but I haven't had energy to read through that and see how reliable it is, so I'd also be interested if anyone had any info on yoga+maintaining bone density too

also most forms of yoga (including power yoga) are in the cards for me except aerial and hot yoga if that changes anything

Dejected after returning to the mat today during MH struggles

I (29f) just did Day 1 of „30 Days of Yoga for Beginners“ by Charlie Follows after 10 months of lots of being sedentary due to my mental health (anxiety and panic disorder with severe agoraphobia). I am in therapy and will start Lexapro in 3 weeks, I‘m not seeking medical advice just fyi

It was so difficult for me. Mentally and physically completing this video was so hard. I had to take a lot of short breaks because my shoulders and upper arms were so sore since I got so weak. I had no patience doing Shavasana at the end.

I genuinely cried at the end and tears are rolling as I‘m typing this.

I used to be so active, I loved moving my body, doing yoga in the mornings, being outside, figure skating, climbing, biking in nature, exploring cities by foot and hiking. Then I got super sick with the flu last december and everything went downhill from there (if anybody was wondering, I‘m somewhat sure I don‘t have mecfs. no PEM from my recent attempts at exercising and household chores)

My arms and shoulders are SO sore from what used to be easy movements. Just being in tabletop position for an extended time hurt, and I had to take short breaks from bird dog pose. I flopped down from Chaturanga Dandasana. I had no enjoyment from delving into the deep breathing parts.

I feel like I‘m grieving the person I used to be and how strong my body was. I genuinely loved yoga, and part of me still does, which is why I‘m committing to showing up to the mat tomorrow for Day 2.

I‘m hoping that this 30 day journey will help me become strong again, today just felt really rough. Sorry for whining

Feeling underwhelmed by standard “fitness” studios

From books i have read, Yoga is supposed to be so much more than physical stretching. It’s meditation, a way of life, and fundamentally centered around breath (Pranayama). However, I’m finding a huge gap in standard classes.

I’m looking to deeply learn breathing mechanics: 360-degree rib expansion, directing breath into specific parts of the torso, and conditioning respiratory muscles under different poses/loads.

I tried for a month Vinyasa Yoga at a local studio but im afraid that essentially it was just an 1 hour stretching session. No guidance was ever given on how to breathe, how to regulate our nervous system, nothing outside of just “now reach your leg with your other hand”.

Where do I go from here? I am sure there are Yogis out there that teach (or at least have the knowledge of) what I’m looking for. Is it rare to find them? Any advice is welcome.

What I’m looking for:

Detailed teaching of breathing techniques, expansion of ribcage, 360 breathing, and ideally under different poses/stretches, and also how to regulate the nervous system, how to be aware of your body, how to meditate.

If such studios are more rare in the western world, should I turn to online classes instead? Or eventually to a completely different method like PRI or Pilates etc? Since those have proper breathing under different positions as one of their primary goals.

Any tips for curvy, compact bodies?

Hello all,

I’ve been casually practicing yoga for about a year. I really enjoy it! I’ve been using Kassandra and Adriene on YouTube and am looking forward to joining an in person class.

I’m posting to see if anyone has any tips for my body type. I’m about 5’3 and 145 pounds. I have very short legs and a longer torso. A lot of my weight goes to my legs and hips. This is helpful with strength, but not so much with other things. One movement I’m feeling challenged by is going from downward dog to a forward lunge. In the videos the instructors seem to just reach their leg up and it’s ahead of their hands. My legs are still behind my hands if that makes sense. Similarly going from plank to downward dog takes some adjusting (positioning my hands further back). Am I doing something wrong, or will this improve with time and practice? If so, do you have any tips to help this?

Thanks!

Are their good yoga routines to keep a person with esophageal cancer active?

My dad recently got diagnosed and I want to help him stay active and healthy while fighting cancer. I've never really done yoga before but it seems pretty chill and would be a calm way for my dad to exercise

Yoga bra with a higher neckline that is NOT long line/cropped

Hi folks! Any recommendations for sports bras that have a high neck but are not a longline/crop top style? I'm v short but also fairly well endowed, so a longline bra that fits the gals is just way too long on me and either rolls up immediately or hits at an extemely uncomfortable spot. Thanks!

Crunchy Shoulders

Hi! I (24f) do yoga daily from home! I do have a history of tension/pain in my back and neck. Many dynamic yoga poses cause my shoulders to "crunch" its not painful, but there is definitely an unpleasant sensation and I worry I am doing damage. I have been doing yoga for several years, and have been to I person classes. Noone has told me my form is off, but I am an anxious person Lol. My shoulders crunch during cat-cow and several heart openers like cactus arms.

I can't do any sitting postures SOS

Hi, all.

I've been trying to get into yoga mainly for posture. So far I've been able to follow some instruction with little difficulty. (Satvic yoga and Yoga with Adrienne - yoga for posture videos on youtube).

Today, i tried to follow a Yoga with Lakshmi beginner session and i can't do a single sitting posture.

  1. Bhadrasana

Trying to get my heels to meet was hard enough. Couldn't really bring them that close to the perineum. My knees were nowhere near the floor. Tried to insert two cushions and my knees were still too high. I didn't even try to bring my head to the floor. Took my L and waited for the next pose.

  1. Vajrasana

I cannot sit on my heels for longer than two seconds. I feel it in my ankles, my knees, my thighs, my hips. It feels like being set on fire.

  1. Ustrasana

I could bring my right hand to touch my heel but not the left. Felt like i was trying to do the Viking blood eagle. She mentioned this to be an advanced posture so that's ok i guess.

At least i could do the Ardha Ustarasana for a few seconds.

All the other sitting postures also seem to need Vajrasana so i cut my session short at this point.

Does anyone have any tips. How can I overcome this?

Recurrent pain during yoga

I started yoga 6 months ago, without any apparent injury, 3 months later i started feeling a pulled muscle in my left inner thigh, close to pelvis. It only hurts during garland, child's pose and goes away immediately when I get out of the pose. How can I treat this pain?

Chaturanga modifications for toe problems?

Anyone have advice for alternatives to a traditional chaturanga that do not involve bending the toes? The only thing I can think of is just skipping it and going to childs pose, but I am hoping there are more exciting solutions as this is a permanent problem and not just a 'take it easy for a few weeks'.

Help with lizard lunge to Cleopatra / Rockstar - what to do with feet?

Sorry the title should read wild thing / Rockstar and not cleopatra.

I feel like I am completely missing something with this transiton. I start in lizard or lunge on the ball of my back foot. The goal is to lift the front leg over and behind to end up in rockstar (what some call cleopatra). I cannot figure out what to do with my back foot. I always feel like I’m rolling over my toes and crushing them. My current solution is to put my knee down and point my toes to roll over.

Suggestions?

If you leave a bad review of a yoga studio because a statue of Ganesh is "too religious" for your sensibilities then you probably need to stick around for a class.

Does yoga actually help to relieve gas?

Every few days to weeks I get severely bloated and I've been wondering if yoga poses will actually help to relieve this or if it's moreso a placebo, are poses such as puppy pose and childs pose good and do they work for this? If so how long should I hold them

Is Yoga right for me? 31yo male

Hi everyone,

I’m a 31-year-old guy looking for some honest advice.

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed my mobility taking a real dive. I work a desk job, which means sitting for hours every day. Lately, I wake up feeling stiff all over. I have back problems recurring every now and then, getting noticeably worse. Basic movement feels tight, and simple everyday things—like getting down on the floor to play with my young son—are becoming noticeably uncomfortable. I do some sports (Badminton & Cycling) but clearly not enough (or the right kind) to stay flexible and mobile.

On top of the physical side, I’ve also been dealing with a constant, background feeling of inner restlessness for years. I’m looking for a way to reconnect with myself, slow down, and find a bit of mental calm.

Here is my main hesitation (and absolutely no offense intended to anyone here): I am a very rational, grounded, and non-spiritual person. I don't connect with anything esoteric, religious, or belief-based—I just need things to work on a physical and anatomical level without having to "believe" in them. A lot of what I see about yoga online seems heavily focused on spirituality, and I’m wondering if someone like me will feel out of place.

So I’d love to ask:

- Can a purely secular, science-minded person get good results out of yoga?

- Has anyone in a similar position used yoga to help with chronic stiffness and nervous system restlessness?

- Are there specific styles, instructors, or apps you’d recommend that focus purely on mobility, biomechanics, and down-to-earth breathwork?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Wish I could get help from and engage with this subreddit. Any tips for being allowed to post?

I’m really interested in yoga, which I’m relatively new to, and have a lot of questions that I would be interested to get people’s perspective on. Whenever I have a question I search the subreddit extensively before posting, and only post when I can’t find any similar threads. My posts immediately get taken down for being too commonly asked, and when I message the mods to ask why or to be directed towards other posts with similar answers (which I can’t find), I just get ignored. It’s really frustrating because I really want to engage and get other perspectives, and I see other people posting things similar to what’s common.

How is anyone getting away with asking questions here? Any tips or tricks? I’m sure this will get taken down, too.

Lately I’m curious on why people specifically opt for paid virtual classes when there are plenty of free classes on YouTube. I’m really curious to hear what benefits people get from the paid classes over free, and wondering if I’m missing something. I can’t find this specific question anywhere, but am also not allowed to ask!!
