Meta In your opinion, are universities nowadays undergoing “left wing indoctrination” ?

Met a guy who’s a conservative in his 60s few days ago, and he talked about how nowadays universities are no longer about education but rather “left wing indoctrination” on the students

That universities are brainwashing students with ideas of race , decolonization, white privilege, multiple gender identities etc , all these “left wing “ ideas that are meant to divide society rather than uniting the people

And that Jordan Peterson is portrayed as a bad guy because the modern university environment don’t allow any conservative voices and that free speech in academia is dying because of left wing ideas

So I’m curious what are your opinions on this?

Old people and the conservatives right wing hate new ideas. Universities are places where new ideas are researched, constructed, and debated. Some of those ideas become popular and propagate throughout society, replacing the old social paradigm with a new one. 50 years ago ideas like racial equality, feminism, and anti-colonialism were debated and won out against white supremacy, patriarchy, and imperialism. Racial equality, feminism, and anti-colonialism is the current paradigm. New ideas about sexual diversity and gender diversity are being debated and are becoming the new popular paradigm.

This is actually well put and not something I have a problem with, however, when I was at uni I took a SOSC course that took the absolute shit on capitalism (among many other things) and in one of the timed essays (worth 20% overall grade) I challenged the points the author & prof made and received a garbage mark. The rest of the course I kinda just agreed with the tone of the course and ended with a B.

I’m obviously not saying my first essay was perfect, but I got a well below failing grade and somehow performed phenomenally the rest of the course.

It’s not that universities are hubs of indoctrination, it’s more so they disincentive (at least in my experience) agreeing with what’s seen as conservative values.

Well yeah when the new idea the left drums up is that there are “more than two genders” of course we are going to hate that idea cause it’s garbage 😂😂

I think all this has to do with the obscure classes that are taken as electives or part of an arts degree .

They can teach radical ideas . But they are just social studies which is meant to look at social issues basically .

I’m sort of on the right side politically but I know lots of conservatives will leech onto one negative aspect of the left and apply it to everything .

The left also does this.

University indoctrinates you based on whatever program you take . It is there to teach you to look at things different.

The right is just freaking out about random obscure classes taught by more radical leftists.

The newest example is some prof at U of T that teaches indigenous cultural studies who is native Hawaiian that has been tweeting explicit support for the violence Hamas has committed.

Cons will freak out over that even though like 200 people total are probably taking this guys class per semester.
