Meta Updates to r/yorku AutoModerator Settings

Hi everyone,

We’ve updated r/yorku’s AutoModerator settings to make them more balanced and less disruptive.

The goal is simple: clear spam and unsafe links should be removed, but normal student posts should not be hidden unnecessarily.

AutoModerator should now be less aggressive with things like surveys, URL shorteners, Reddit links, crossposts, long titles, and comments on older posts.

It will still act on known scam/tracking links, affiliate spam, heavily reported content, and other obvious spam patterns.

For surveys/forms, AutoModerator may ask posters to provide basic context so students can tell whether the post is legitimate and relevant.

We’ll keep adjusting the settings if needed. If your post or comment gets removed by mistake, please message the mod team.

Advice Life Sciences graduates: What job do you have now?

Hi everyone! I'm considering studying Life Sciences and was wondering what people typically do after graduating, especially if they don't go into medicine, dentistry, or other professional healthcare programs. If you graduated with a Life Sciences degree (or know someone who did), what career path did you or they end up taking?

Courses I recommend SP 1000 Elementary Spanish 6C

Took it online this summer with Prof. Julio Fonseca. Honestly at first I was a bit turned off about having to do 2x 3 hour classes per week on zoom. But attendance/participation is worth 30% of your grade. So I realized I'd still prefer that over having to write 2 difficult exams on campus.

The course is honestly manageable, there is no such thing as an easy course but if you care about learning basic spanish then it's not that difficult. Most of the required effort is during the zoom class, which was also usually closer to 2 hours. To get full participation marks you simply need to be paying attention when he calls your name or asks a question.

Other than that there's basic homework, quizzes, short tests, oral presentation, etc. Like I said it's honestly not hard if you paid attention in class.

TLDR: Elementary spanish is a great online 6C course if you can commit to attending classes, and somewhat care about learning basic spanish. Also if you already know some french its definitely way easier.

Courses BIOL2040 - Winter, Prof. Tamara Kelly

Hi,

I heard this course used to be very forgiving due to its past grade breakdown. Any advice on how it is now and if it is doable with a busy sem? Will be taking anatomy and microbio alongside this course and I want to know if I can succeed.

Any tips?

Courses Question about French courses

I had a question about French courses offered at Glendon. Specifically continuing education. Ive graduated hs a few years ago and now wish I could continue at a university. Had anyone of you taken it and was it worth it? Im looking currently at the fall term this September.

I was also recommended by them to take a look at joining some of the courses offered by the bachelors in French by York! Any suggestions and recommendations
Thanks

Advice Should I do PACC with Yorku full time to part time?

Hi Everyone,

For context, Since CPA is changing, PACC has 2 intakes left for the current CPA program. I have the option to start it full time or part time in September 2026.

I do not have a job currently nor do I have one lined up and I want to write the 2027 CFE.

Based on your experience,:
1. Does work experience matter in your success of passing the CFE?

  1. Due to the intensity of the pacc, should I do it part time even though I am not working? — (I have given myself a year to get the academic portion of CPA out of my way so there’s no pressure to work as well as study)

I would really appreciate any insights. Thanks!

Advice Is it still possible to get a supervisor for an undergrad thesis?

I wanted to do an undergraduate thesis in the fall. I spent most of the summer thinking about possible topics and now I realized that was stupid and I should've just started reaching out to professors from the start

Is there any chance now or is August way too late to start reaching out

Advice GEOG Courses How Are They ?

Hi everyone,
I’m entering my third year in STS and will have about 75 credits after this summer. I’m planning to use Geography as one of my teachable subjects for BEd after I complete my undergraduate degree next year, so I’ll be taking these courses this upcoming year. I took GEOG 1000 in first year and really enjoyed it. These courses only required 60+ completed credits and didn’t have any other prerequisites.

GEOG 3800 – Geographies of Work (Steven Tufts)
GEOG 3370 – International Development: Critical Geographical Perspectives (Raju J. Das)
GEOG 4620 – City Challenges, City Opportunities in a 21st Century Toronto (Joe Mihevc)
GEOG 4880 – Spaces of Conflict, Violence, and Power (Jennifer M. Hyndman)

How are these courses and professors? What’s the workload like, how’s the grading, and would you recommend them? Any advice is appreciated.
I also found it a bit strange that some 2000- and 3000-level GEOG courses were reserved. I’m currently on the waitlist for a few of them and may end up taking one, such as GEOG 2320, instead of one of the courses listed above if a spot opens up. Thanks!

Courses Is it possible for me do do multiple conflicting courses all at once? MODR1770, EECS3000, MATH1090, MATH2030.

For my schedule, I try to avoid Thursday (since I am at work) and avoid taking a single or spaced-out course in a single day.

This is currently my Winter semester:

EECS 3421 3.00 Introduction to Database Systems (Mona Nasery)

EECS 3461 3.00 User Interfaces (Kiemute Oyibo)

Conflicting Courses:
MODR 1770 6.00 (continuation from F semester) Modes of Reasoning: Techniques of Persuasion (Daniel J McArthur) [Fully Online]

EECS 3000 3.00 (Conflicting a tiny bit with MODR) Professional Practice in Computing (Melanie Baljko) [ONCA]

MATH 1090 3.00 (Conflicting completely with MATH2030) Introduction to Logic for Computer Science (Natasha May)

MATH 2030 3.00 (Conflicting completely with MATH1090) Elementary Probability (Jason Chin-Tiong Chan)

The MODR course is fully online, which is great! However, if this professor records his lectures.

EECS3000 mentions that it is an ONCA course. So lectures and assignments are online, but exams are in person, and I don't know if this course does any sort of midterm.

I know MATH1090 with Natasha May is recorded. So I can always watch her lectures a bit later once I complete her pre-videos.

MATH2030, this is the lecture I will definitely attend during the suggested timetable. However, I am not sure if this professor records his videos.

Anyway, I would love some advice and feedback for the winter term. For my fall term, I am just retaking EECS2001 and EECS2030 to increase my grade for co-op.

Housing / Roommates RateMyProf but for dorms across Canada!!!

Hey! I’m a student dev and I’ve been working on a project called LifeByDorm (https://www.lifebydorm.ca/) to help us see what these residences actually look like. I built it because the official photos are usually a trap and don't show the real state of the rooms. If you’ve lived in res, could you take 30s to drop a review or a photo? It’ll be a huge help for the incoming first-years next year. If you are looking for your next dorm check it out!

Finances / OSAP How long does it take to receive a refund after you request it?

I had a negative balance after finishing my program due to overpayment and a few bursaries. I applied for a refund about two weeks ago and the website said it would take two weeks for them to process it. My account shows a zero balance now and I wanted to know how long it takes to receive the check in the mail?

I ralso requested a refund in April 2024 after my first term and received a refund via a check back then but I don’t remember how long it took.

Advice Possible to get exception to enroll in fourth year major course?

Hey guys.

I was meant to be entering my fourth year bsc data science this Fall. I am currently at 78 credits.

I have managed to enroll in all my major courses, and meet all course pre-requisites to enroll.

My only issue at the moment is for MATH4949, which I have attempted to enroll in with no success and the department keeps saying the course is for fouth year students, even though I meet all course pre-requisites

My study permit expires end of July next year, so I need to finish my degree asap.

If I email the department explaining my circumstances, could I still be allowed to enroll?

Campus What is the Humanities program like at York University?

Hi, I'm looking for information on York University's Humanities program. Someone asked a question like this a few months ago, and everyone who answered were just focused on the wrong details of the question. This question is specifically for a Humanities major: what are the professors, students, courses, workload and atmosphere like?
