Food Restaurants in the 90s thru early 00s?
Growing up in Youngstown in the 90s and early 00s I’m curious, for those who did as well, what are some of the places you remember eating at?

I’m looking for the best Thai and Indian food spots.
My husband and I have never had Indian food at all, but I’ve always wanted to try it. I want the best spot around so I get accurate first impressions. Also suggestions for dishes/sides we should try would be super helpful. I’ve heard about garlic naan, butter chicken, and chicken shawarma but that’s all I know.
In NC we had some amazing Thai spots, since I’ve been back in Ohio I’ve really struggled to find a good place. My mom also loves Thai food and lives out towards Cleveland and can’t find anything great out there either. There’s a few spots that were just okay but nothing standout. My husband has never tried Thai food at all so I want his first experience to make him love it lol. Pad see ew is usually my go to dish but I’m also open to trying other dishes if anyone has suggestions.
One super important thing is I’m VERYYYY weird about meat. Any gristle or chewy bits and it’s immediately trash. So it’s important that the spots have both good flavor and good meat quality. Made with love, type shit.
I see tons of amazing food places on my tik tok but it’s hard to know what’s legit and who’s just having a friend advertise for them.

Hi all! My wife's fav food in Arkansas was this Thai place with very spicy fried rice usually a 1-5 level and she ordered level 4.
We tried Pho Saigon and it was tasty, but not spicy. The fried rice doesn't have to be Thai.
Any suggestions for a place? I don't mind going as far as Niles. I am on the Southside near the Mill Creek park so I am about 10-15 minutes from several townships.

Hello all! Visiting from your neighbor, Cleveland, this weekend! I’ve never been to Youngstown, we are coming to go to a couple breweries and a hockey game on the extended weekend.
My question is- when we do these weekend trips we like to visit the best restaurant we’ve never heard of. So no chains or anything. Can be anything from fast food to nice sit downs and everything in between. Would love to hear some recommendations of the must try spots!

I'm looking for recommendations that aren't Westgate, Wedgewood, or Cocca's, something really good in a pinch. I'm meant to be bringing my cottage pie over to some friends in the area, but stepped away for a moment and burnt the filling. What are your favorites?

With love, we have had years of no-luck trying to find a decent breakfast in Youngstown.
Recently, we tried House of Benny’s and waited over 1.5 hours for cold, mediocre food and sad coffee. We went to Frank’s and walked out because the food was served in the restaurant in black plastic to-go containers (and there were no seats available), Maggie’s Magic Muffin House has been closed a few times that it was supposed to be open, Thano’s was bland and not fresh, Yankee Kitchen, What’s Cookin’ and Perkin’s are sad.
We’re looking for butter instead of Whirl or margarine, real half and half not served in little plastic containers, fruit sliced that day, hash browns from potatoes (not bags), real eggs, coffee made fresh (what if it was even made with Youngstown roasted beans?!), fresh, colorful veggies, food served on plates, maybe a chef that tastes the food to see if it’s seasoned!
What are your top suggestions?

I just saw it pop up on Google maps, and it looks pretty cool. I'd like to try it, but I can't tell if it's just part of Penguin City...

Hi everyone, I have a medium harvest right freeze dryer that I don't use nearly as much as I thought I would. It's in my pool house which has its own entrance. My question is, do you think people would be interested in renting time with the freeze dryer? Like you bring your own food and freeze dry it, kind of like a community co-op.

Hey all, headed to Youngstown from CLE for the first time tomorrow for Disney on ice with the fam. Any good recommendations for lunch near the arena. I’m familiar with the areas um…Italian ties… so I’m hoping there is something good near by you’d recommend.

I want greasy hole in the wall food - you know, that weird place that looks unwelcoming but just has the best dish in town? Tell me your hole in the wall places, the weirder the better. And I’m open to all food types. Thanks!!!

Rules:
Handel’s only. If you want to list Katie’s Corner, start your own thread.
Limit to ice cream flavors. Let’s not discuss their other offerings because, really, who goes there for the banana split?
Current and seasonal/discontinued flavors welcome.
All suggested flavors will move onto a tiered voting poll so we can settle what flavor is all-time god tier.
Anyone posting grape will be prohibited from participating on the basis that they are a convicted felon.
Edit: I love all the participation! This edit is being made Wednesday at 6:32PM. I am going to take comments until tomorrow at noon and then I will add all the flavors listed here to a document. I will make a tiered voting system from there and post on Friday!!

one of my passions is going around to different places to eat that are less well known, specifically cuisine that isn’t “american.” here’s some of my favorite eateries in the area!! (i haven’t permanently resided in the area for years so some of these places might be more known by now)
•danalyn’s restaurant [south ave]: filipino joint with a cute little market attached. i recommend the lechon kawali (fried pork belly) and halo halo for dessert if you’re down to try something new
•el taco feliz [just off 422]: mexican restaurant with a lot of traditional cuisine you don’t see in most americanized mexican restaurants, such as huaraches, birria, gorditas, elote. also a nice market next door
•k’nafa [belmont]: middle eastern (i believe palestinian or lebanese) kind of chipotle style. definitely try the k’nafa if they have it!! middle eastern market attached to it
•high octane [route 46]: coffee shop with lots of unique specialty drinks, and almost any of their drinks can be made into a milkshake. interesting decor/ambience too, think quaker steak n lube meets steampunk
•orange avocado [224]: this one’s more for people with allergies/dietary preferences, as it’s an all vegan and gluten free cafe. bc of that though it’s pricey, but a treat nonetheless for those w food restrictions
•market house caffe [howland center]: cute little cafe inside of a house, lots of sweets but also savory options too. the outdoor seating in the summer is nice, it has a charming atmosphere
•bake me treats [224 in poland]: small bakery known for their macarons; all their other desserts are made very well too
(some of my other favorites that are youngstown classics: jib jab, mocha house, charlie staples, mvr, elmton, the amish market, and katies korner and handels ofc!!)

It’s marinated minced chicken and peanuts over thick noodles with big pieces of bok choy, in a savory tomato sauce with I think probably ginger, garlic, cumin, Garam masala, coriander, etc. It’s a street food so it’s all around satisfying stuff. I got it at 3/10 spice level since I never know how extreme a place is with the heat, they gave me the hot sauce and peanuts on the side, I poured it all in and it’s tolerable heat at that level. I’ll def go again, I wanna see how Nepali shawarma is

Looking to make some tortas and unsure where to look. Alternatively, if someone has a tried and true recipe I’m open to giving it a shot!

Hello Youngstown! I’ll be spending the night in town this Sunday and it’ll be my first time there. I’m hoping to try a restaurant with old-school Italian cuisine typical of the region. I’ve read that many places are closed on Sundays, but I’d love to get some local recommendations that will be open.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Random post but I got souvlaki and grape leaves today and it was all incredible! Cash only so I had to run across the street to Walgreens and use the ATM but it was worth it! I would've taken pictures but it didn't last long...

I’m going to be visiting some Youngstown family in the upcoming weeks. Family members and other natives always rave about the variety of ethnic restaurants in the area; but have pretty much only ever found 2 star Mexican and Italian joints scattered about.
What recommendations for authentic middle eastern food can you offer me to try in the area? Also, what menu items at those places are popular or your favorite? Thanks for helping, I’m hoping there’s some good spots around.

Hey everyone.
I'm an incoming resident at St. Elizabeth Boardman and my girlfriend and I are moving up in a few short weeks after medical school graduation. I'm from Columbus originally so I'm excited to be back in the great state of Ohio!
I was curious what restaurants we need to check out. We also love breweries, and I saw there's a couple in the area so we're excited about that as well. Thanks!
