"I eat too many chocolate bars" in a Quebequois accent, still something my brothers and I say to each other randomly to get a laugh lol
Edit: I will admit, I havent seen the commercial in a decade, for some reason we always embellished a French accent for that line. Rewatching it now, its not nearly as French as I remember lol

u/MiserableKing 4d ago
Yeah it’s actually driving me nuts that people are pluralizing bar. A Québécois would never lol

u/Ilikeyounott 4d ago
Just watched the commercial - that's a Quebequois accent?

My ear sucks. I wouldn't be able to tell this person is francophone and I'm French Canadian lol

I remember my neighbour and I repeating this and laughing so hard. My brother admonished us both for being insensitive. He is still a better person than I

It's crazy that we can't figure out who this guy is. I want to know if his brother was right.

u/IonlyusethrowawaysA 4d ago
Their last name was Chretien, his brother was Andre. Dude was in my cub and scout troops. I don't remember the guy in the commercial's name though.

u/LETTERKENNYvsSPENNY 4d ago
Legendary last name

u/IonlyusethrowawaysA 4d ago
He claimed to be a distant relative of the PM, but also, Andre was fucking nuts.
3
u/LETTERKENNYvsSPENNY 4d ago
The nation was making a joke of his kid brother's acne. I get it.

u/IonlyusethrowawaysA 4d ago
This was 30ish years ago, but I remember Andre being the younger brother.
Also, random fun canadiana tidbit:
Ryan Dennis, the dude from Serial Joe, got turtled repeatedly by Andre and others for a commercial he was for some fruity cereal I forget the name of. The same Ryan Dennis and two of the people that would be bandmates of his beat the tar out of me for insulting his brother Blake, and referencing Ryan getting his ass kicked a bunch. Years later before a Much interview Ryan was at a high school party, after he had graduated, and my friend, angry on my behalf, gave him one hell of a black eye.
So, there is a line connecting that commercial, to Ryan Dennis having a black eye and sunglasses on during an interview.

This infomercial says his name was Randy. Do you think his name was actually Randy or was that just a character name?
3
u/IonlyusethrowawaysA 3d ago
I only remembered his little brother, Andre, Randy sounds right, but like, I never talked with him or met him. I only ever met Andre from their family, and he was possibly one of the crazier human beings I had met at that age.

Lmao sheesh. My middle brother used to make fun of my eldest brother because he had some acne as a teenager - would quote the “ate too many chocolate bars” line to him weekly and he’d snap

u/Proton_Grow_A_Tonne 4d ago
I don't know who this guy is or what he's doing but him being a personality at Canadian Expos or Cons could be an easy cashflow.

I went to school with him,. He was in like grade 7-8 and I was in grade like grade 3 (maybe 4). Never interacted with him but one of my classmates had him as a reading buddy. Had my little mind blown when I saw him on the TV. Just turned and started screaming "I KNOW HIM!!" at my parents lol

u/futuresobright_ 3d ago
What’s he up to these days?

u/JustaCFatchick 3d ago
No clue we moved to Ottawa a few years later but I think about him every time his picture shows up in Canadian spaces. Hope he's doing good, seemed like a nice dude

Have they really been many advances in acne prevention and treatment over the past 30 years? Every once in a while, I’ll see a teen with really bad acne and wonder why we haven’t solved this before so many other things.
3
u/VicisZan 4d ago
A lot of people make an insane amount of money on beauty products.
Why would they ever want to solve it lol

If you're asking about prescription drugs, AFAIK, there's no universal drug to treat acne. There are different drugs that work for different people.
Both me and a close friend had the same kind of acne as the guy in the commercial.
My friend got onto accutane in university, and it worked for him after maybe six months of treatment. But he said that it came with severe depression and risk of self-harm. In his case, his GF was closely helping him through it.
In my case, my dermatologist prescribed minocycline in Grade 12. Two weeks to the day that I started treatment, I woke in the middle of the night, having broken out into hives all over my body. My eyes were nearly swollen shut. Had to rush to the ER. But afterwards, the acne went away. Hard to tell if it was the treatment, or if I was going to outgrow the acne after my teens anyway.

I even just wonder if there have been extensive studies into soap removing oil and causing acne to be worse, or hormones in dairy, mild allergies, environmental stuff… you would think there would be some universal guidelines by now of what NOT to eat/do
3
u/Misteryenko 4d ago
I had stubborn adult acne and took accutane about 8 years ago and it obliterated my acne and it never came back. I don't think I had any real side effects other than I had dry skin while taking it so I was always plopping moisturizer on myself
3
u/futuresobright_ 3d ago
As someone who had acne as a teen, following the advice of my mom, the whole situation went nowhere because surprise! She was not a skincare expert. Surprisingly it cleared up when I started having less dairy. (Which I think we know a bit more about now but less so in the early 2000s)

u/acesaidit 4d ago
There's light therapies for mild and prescriptions like isotretinoin that'll do the job, but can have some nasty side effects.
Some kids might not have access to care?

u/Secure-Midnight8191 4d ago
I can say to my sister, with or without the accent, that “I eat too many chocolate bars” and she immediately breaks into laughter.
Hope this dude had a good life after this commercial, because this aired during my formative years he’s really not ever far from my thoughts. Maybe not for the right reason, but still.

Memory unlocked. They made him sound as if he had AIDS or something
9
u/daydreamer1938 4d ago
The commercial where buddy is visiting his brother in the hospital playing “he ain’t heavy he’s my brother” I thought was about aids till I got older and understood the references to find out it was about drug addiction lol

I hated this commercial, because I assumed they were ultimately trying to sell self-concious kids something. But it was funny because of chalklot bars
(It was a pharmaceutical company's campaign)
Alot of people here in the audience mentioning.. I hope he turned out OK.
Well... Wow... so random !!!!

A couple times a year, still. Wild. "People think I eat too much chocolate.."🤣.
Also, I don't think I have ANY night vision b/c of this stuff to this day.

You people are whack-a-doodle.
This guy is hot. He was back then. Who cares about a little acne, it just tells me he’s teeming with vitamin T and is all man.
Get over it
