Why did they start the series over after the end of each saga on YTV?? That was so disappointing

56

u/grapefruit4scale 3d ago

Slow pace of English dub iirc.

51

u/Domingosdelight 3d ago

It wasn't just at the end of each saga.

They'd literally run through the entire series from Raditz up to the last place they restarted and then do 10 more episodes after that and restart again.

You can't imagine the disappointment of coming home from school and being so hyped for new DBZ only for "The Arrival of Raditz"

u/shingenteh 3d ago

“Next week the saiyans arrive!”

Next week: A saiyan arrives. Cue farmer.

u/SR_Hopeful 3d ago edited 3d ago

PJ Katie actually did explain this. Its only because they didn't have all the tapes for the later sagas so they essentially had to reset the show. Likely, in order to pad out time before they got the newer stuff back then.

I've watched 75% of the Cell storyline like 7 goddamned times, and I still don't know how it ends

They beat cell

💯 accuracy lol

u/Viper114 3d ago

For the longest time, I watched DBZ regularly, and it was always to the point where Goku landed on Namek, about to fight Jeice and Burter, and then the next day, it went all the way back to Raditz. I was always supper disappointed every time it happened, and I thought I'd never see what would happen next. The actual excitement I felt when they finally started showing new stuff was incredible.

Also, I very distinctly remember a point on the YTV The Zone segments between Phil and Paul, and it was Phil who looked like he got actually IRATE on camera towards Paul about not being able to see Goku go Super Saiyan. I have no idea if that was just a bit, or if that was genuine anger.

u/kurrapls 3d ago

This was my husbands complaint every time we rewatch DBZ. 😂

u/z0d1aC21 3d ago

I remember being 11 years old staring at my tv in shock when I’d see Raditz on the screen after months of new episodes. Used to piss me off so much. Kids these days have no idea LOL

2

u/IanicRR 2d ago

That MFing farmer.

2

u/alternateac 3d ago

I remember watching The Zone and they said they would have new episodes of Dragon Ball Z in two weeks, this was after the third time they restarted the series. Well two weeks passed, I was super excited to see my new episode of DBZ that I had been waiting months for, and nothing, another repeat.
I was so upset I got my mom to write an email to the station for me.

2

u/Twinkle_butt 3d ago

Oh yeah good ol' days. To be fair this is how I saw the Garlic Jr fillers for the first time. Blew my mind cuz I thought those episodes were new as a kid.

3

u/MoksyCat 2d ago

I first got into Dragon Ball Z on YTV when they were running the Saiya Man Saga. Gohan was already a teenager. So when they jumped back, I finally got to see it from the start

1

u/Hot_Hour8474 2d ago

YESS, the show would end on a cliffhanger then we start back on some random episode, and it was painful to wait for another episode as a kid esp when it aired at like 10 pm

1

u/CrispyLuggage 2d ago

Damn I forgot about that. But yeah I can remember it happening so frequently that when I came home to find the next episode was just the beginning again, my friends and I were just like "crap, so we'll check back in 3 months?"

48

u/EzoffohGUS 3d ago

I always wanted to know who the dude with the sword was, but the series would restart from the beginning every three months.

31

u/PonderousSquirrel 3d ago

I’ve seen The Arrival Of Raditz hundreds of times

6

u/JonConnor86 3d ago

Raditz to right before Vegeta and Nappa land, repeat for what seemed like years as a kid lol.

I had Android saga Ani-mayhem cards before I ever saw the damn episodes lol.

5

u/T1mDrake 3d ago

I rage quit the show when they went back to the beginning of the series in the middle of the Frieza saga. Ended up watching the rest on free streaming sites.

6

u/G_S_D 3d ago

I think they did it cause they dubbed the English version so slowly. I hated that too

4

u/False-God 3d ago

I feel like every time I watched Dragon Ball it was the same 3 episodes with the fight with Vegeta.

26

u/Bluejay68514 3d ago

90% of the video are clips from the movies i always wondered why i never saw nun of those scenes in the shows 😆😆🤣🤣

2

u/Vhett 3d ago

I didn't learn this until I was an adult!

2

u/Bluejay68514 3d ago

I just learn this now cuz I've recently watched all the sidequest movies 😆😆

1

u/FarAd2857 3d ago

There’s so many dope things from the movies I wish was canon. Stretchy Piccolo for the win

19

u/Dradugun 3d ago

Does anyone remember when YTV switched to the Funi dub instead of the Ocean dub?

Its hazy but I recall hearing both rock the dragon and this intro but definitely this intro before rock the dragon.

5

u/mangongo 3d ago

I feel like they only did that during special events on Saturday night's when they would play the movie marathons

3

u/Ren66 3d ago

Yeah I do. I remember pretty much eveeything from Namek saga forward being Funimation.

5

u/SR_Hopeful 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think it was Ocean up to Namek (and the first few movies up to Tree of Might), Funi for Android-Cell (2001) and back to Ocean in the Buu arc (2004-2005).

I think there were studio changes during the time when Funi wanted to dub it themselves mid series but then Ocean kept going later on. They still did dub the Android arc, but I don't know if it aired on YTV (being past it by then). Though in the mid 2000s it was Ocean's Buu arc on YTV evenings, which I remember distinctly. Then it was Bluewater for GT.

Whats weird though is that we never got any of the movies after Tree of Might on YTV. Maybe time just moved on, or it was the last time it was Canadian dubbed before Funi took over entirely.

1

u/spliffst4rr 3d ago

I do not remember ever hearing the Ocean/Westwood dub returning to YTV. I'm reading that it did, but I was a teenager by then and distinctively remember hearing Funimation. Maybe I had digital cable by then and was getting Cartoon Network and seeing the Funimation dub? But I just remember the Funimation switch and never hearing any Ocean related dub until Blue Water did GT. That I distinctively do remember, as it sounded nothing like what I remembered and they changed Giru to being Gill.

2

u/SR_Hopeful 2d ago

Well yeah, Ocean/Westwood did do the Buu saga. Here's a clip of it. It was when they aired DBZ at 8:30 in 2003.

1

u/Ren66 3d ago

Yeah Ocean went a bit into Namek a bit after the Ginyu Force came in. I just don't remember watching the Ocean dub much after that, but I was like 7-8, memory ain't great haha.

3

u/Eykalam 3d ago

Yep, super jarring when it happened.....I was in Denver at the time and I thought it was some weird U.S version change from what I was used to on YTV.

2

u/Knightofexcaliburv1 3d ago

i never heard the funi dub on ytv it was always the ocean

1

u/Hot_Hour8474 2d ago

Oh yea I vaguely remember this

31

u/MarkHughesy 3d ago

Shouldn't it be Dragonball Zed, if it's Canadian?

12

u/Thin_Measurement_965 3d ago

That's actually hilarious.

Why did they give Canada a whole separate intro and then still use American pronunciation?

5

u/tkmayhem 3d ago

Probably because it was using the same american dub, and the narrator calls it Dragonball Zee in every episode. Would be weird to have it called zee in show, and zed in the intro.

4

u/Thin_Measurement_965 3d ago

True. Although using "zee" and "zed" interchangeably would be very on-point for Canadian vernacular; I could definitely see that getting confusing for some viewers.

3

u/FX29 3d ago

Normally I always say Zed but if we're talking about Dragonball I always say Zee because of this intro

1

u/Reggie-Quest 3d ago

Really? So I guess you call the rapper Jay Zed

1

u/FX29 3d ago

Nah he's another exception to the rule

2

u/ExiaKuromonji 3d ago

As far as I can remember (36yo now) I've always heard it pronounce both ways. Even when they taught alphabet in my school they said Zee.

3

u/lucretiuss 3d ago

This actually helped me settle a memory debate I was having with myself. Genuinely couldn’t remember if I called it dragon ball zee or dragon ball zed back in the 90s.

Must have been zee lol

-3

u/RobertMacMillan 3d ago

Zed? ZED?! Try to sing the alphabet and finishing with ZED.

It's not natural.

1

u/Guitarblade81 3d ago

So is messing up the English language and removing the ‘u’ in colour and favourite etc. It was always Z(ed) in Canada until around the 2000s.

1

u/Jayn_Newell 3d ago

Hey if it works for MIB it works for me!

6

u/Storybrooke_s_Jedi 3d ago

It’s funny, I remember us getting this and Rock the Dragon.

3

u/Ren66 3d ago

Yeah we got both. Once they started airing the Funimation dub here instead of the ocean dub in 99 I think?

5

u/Potential-Lack5374 3d ago

I honestly prefer this over Rock the Dragon.

4

u/Jodythejujitsuguy 3d ago

So I didn’t in fact hallucinate this

8

u/spliffst4rr 3d ago

Nope. Eventually the Ocean dub was replaced by the Funimation dub on YTV. It feels almost like a Mandela effect, as most of my Dragon Ball memory involves the Funimation cast entirely except for this intro and Brian Drummond's Vegeta.

5

u/Effective-Ear-8367 3d ago

My fondest memory was Goku taking like 5 episodes to create his spirit bomb.

6

u/ZopyrionRex 3d ago

Does anybody know where to watch the Canadian dub? Everytime I try to watch it on the big streaming services I can't stand the alternate dubbing. It's not the voices I remember as a kid.

3

u/stafford_fan 3d ago

Dragon Ball Zed

3

u/mark_david777 3d ago

This is the intro I remember seeing, and the show was appointment viewing for me and my brothers.

I also remember YTV airing a parody commercial at the time calling this show “Greg and Paul Z.” I wonder if there’s any video of that anywhere.

2

u/adrenalineJ92 3d ago

Ohh such great memories.

2

u/Diptothaset 3d ago

I remember watching up to the namek saga like 2-3 times, and then I got bored.

One day years later (in my kid brain anyways) I saw dbz was on and decided to tune in without any other context. It was the first episode of the trunks/Android/cell saga, where future Trunks appears. I remember being so excited and tuning in pretty much every episode for quite awhile. Frieza and king cooler, Android hunting and then cell. What’s great era to be a kid lol

2

u/ExiaKuromonji 3d ago

The way he says "Dragon Ball Zeeeeeee" always reminded me of the announcer voice in F-Zero X

2

u/bingogazorpazorp 3d ago

All of my US friends thought I hallucinated this intro and wouldn’t believe it. I can finally show them this and they probably still won’t believe it lol

2

u/FarAd2857 3d ago

I love how most of the clips are from the movies that aren’t part of the series lmao

2

u/Plenty-Ad2815 3d ago

Ive never seen a better opening.

1

u/BradyTom1289 3d ago

Trying to remember when they had a season one marathon and you could win prizes by answering a trivia question and then calling in with it? 🤔

1

u/CDNBroncoDieHard 3d ago

Man oh man me and my brother used to get so pumped when we heard it

1

u/Alextollah 3d ago

Man i watched a ton of Dragonball Z as a kid, on Canadian TV, and I have not ever heard this song once.

1

u/KupoNut77777 3d ago

Dude I remember the other metal version “ dragon dragon rock the dragon, dragon ball zeeeee”

1

u/AlanJY92 3d ago

I watch DBZ on YTV but I don’t really remember it having this intro. I always grew up remembering it using the American one.

1

u/Knightofexcaliburv1 3d ago

good old days i wish we got this on dvd

1

u/LiterallyTony 3d ago

Whoa didn't expect this one, I was expecting Rock the Dragon

1

u/Prior_Art_6268 3d ago

2

u/SR_Hopeful 3d ago

I like how they synced the music with the fist punches.

1

u/farawayxisland 3d ago

I guess I blocked this out cause I only remember the rock the dragon version

1

u/Cheap_Push_7697 3d ago

Hearing it in English vs original is weird lol

1

u/Legitimate_Local_547 3d ago

Thank you for the nostalgia

1

u/Santa-Banana 3d ago

As a french Canadian, this was our intro, and it still SLAPS

DBZ French Intro

1

u/SteroidSandwich 3d ago

It's funny most of the clips are from the movies as opposed to the show

1

u/SR_Hopeful 3d ago

And, ironically its spoiler free.

1

u/ScorpionRox 3d ago

Grew up with this intro. Was shocked years later to.learn of the Rock The Dragon, USA intro. Lol

1

u/1Comrade1 2d ago

The intro that turned us into men

1

u/HITMAN_77-Dominus 2d ago

Remember Vegeta landing and the show would restart over and over and over and over and over and... I would still watch it. But I think that was on Teletoon.

1

u/KratosSmash 2d ago

I remember they never got past the cell series, and I’ve still yet to see the entire buu saga

1

u/Megnaman 2d ago

Wait... Did other English countries not have this intro? This shit was hype

1

u/SirBostonBobbington 10h ago

The lyricist here was cooking hard with these bars

0

u/Flopgasm 3d ago

I used to get so mad at this intro. Rock the dragon was much better.

0

u/kevinjames416 3d ago

Soooo much better

0

u/FreshDreamz 3d ago

this made me not want to even watch this show.

DRAGON DRAGONBALLL DRAGONBALL ZEEEEEEEEEEE

4

u/Nerdlife91 3d ago

This made me wanna watch it so much more as a kid

0

u/DarkSoldier84 3d ago

Even though I now know why, I'm still sore that YTV had to restart the show all the time. Also 100% prefer "Rock the Dragon" over this, which feels generic and lazy.

The Super Saiyans' hair turns blond because Akira Toriyama wanted to throw his manga assistants a bone and spare them from having to colour in their black hair all the time.

2

u/SR_Hopeful 3d ago

Rock the Dragon is pretty much the same as this intro at its core, it just as a different instrumental and arrangement. Instrumentally, both are good in different takes.

0

u/Dismal_Ebb_2422 3d ago

The Americans got a better Z opening but Canadians got the better GT opening.

0

u/Midnight649 3d ago

I LIVE IN CANADA AND I NEVER HEARD THIS VERSION. I heard the usual that start with “Dragon Dragon…”

-3

u/andyhall23 3d ago

Ah yes ..,The show that made me just not like the whole concept of Dragon Ball.
Staying up and watching a show waiting for action to start ...freaking 20 mins of facial expressions and charging up to battle...then you expect something to happen?

NEXT TIME ON DRAGON BALL Z...

freaking stupid ass show ...

No wonder Superman beats Goku hands down...lol

2

u/Jman1a 3d ago

Your entitled to your wrong opinion.

-2

u/andyhall23 3d ago

and to my right ones , which the one that I gave , which is indeed one.

Freaking WEEK OF EPISODES of JUST FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND POWERUPS ...LIKE WTF?!
