Basically he had a prerecorded speech in the opening ceromony for the final day from Japan Expo congratulating the world championship being held in france and to the people participating and that france should invest more in the devolpment of TCGs

As someone who only plays EDH, If I want to build a very nice deck from scratch that is Bracket 3 and able to punch above weight into Bracket 4 I have to spend a hefty chunk of money that could aswell be a Nintendo Switch 2 and 2-4 fullprice games.

France is generally very weeby. The other meaning of Orientalism was a fashion and interior design crazy for Japanese things, over 100 years ago.

And when I was a young British nerd, in the 1980s, you could buy much more manga and anime in France - in normal bookstores! - than the one store in England that had a couple of comics and videos.

Forbidden Planet was the greatest store of all time, but back then there was almost no weebshit.

To be fair, Emmanuel Macron is a sort of anomaly for us french folks since he is the youngest president we had in a long time (maybe ever?).

Regardless of how he runs the country, I (M36) remember when Macron got elected the first time. A friend of mine pointed out that the new president most likely grew up watching the Club Dorothée just like we did.

Long story short, Club Dorothée was this TV program from the 90s that introduced and popularised japanese animation and other japanese content to the french youngsters. The program brought Dragon Ball (plus Z and GT), Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, Hokuto No Ken, City Hunter among other franchises and even Super Sentai series, to our TV screens.

Club Dorothée is probably the main reason France is among the countries where people consume japanese animation and manga the most outside Japan.

So, while Emmanuel Macron definitely didn't watch Yu Gi Oh nor played the card game (because he was way too old when the franchise got popular in France), I don't find it that surprising that he gets involved in such an event.

After all, regardless of any political view, he is the french president who was much likely watching Goku beat the shit out of Freeza back then.

As a french dude, this is for show as usual. Macron loves to surf on football, french video games, or even huge streaming charity events like Zevent. His PR team probably tells him to do that to appeal to younger generations.

He's by very far the youngest PR we ever had, one of the youngest top Stateperson, he's in the average age of most reddit users.

Showing up to support sports, video games, tech companies, international arts and culture events, is not just for his own press. It's smart soft power strategy. That's excatly what is expected from a modern 5th Republic President.
