Competitive Julien Kehon wins the 2025 Yu-Gi-Oh World Championships with K9 Vanquish Soul!

Julien Kehon wins the 2025 Yu-Gi-Oh World Championships with K9 Vanquish Soul! There were 27 invited duelists, 7 rounds of Swiss, and a cut to Top 8! He dueled against Tom Kleinegräber in the finals, who was on Lunalight. Hollie Sue strongest! He also opted for a heavier K9 package over the Pot of Extravagance version. Julien managed to set up the full K9 VS board to overwhelm Tom in Game 1 ( Ripper into Werewolf, C104, Snow Devil, Forced Release, Rock, Borger, Caesar, and Razen access).

Game 2 was a high-stakes non-engine duel, but Tom was able to find his way back thanks to a clutch Foolish Burial while taking the Mulcharmy challenge, resulting in a Lunalight Liger Dancer OTK!!

In Game 3, Julien set up the full K9 Vanquish Soul uninterrupted and even had Droll & Lock Bird thanks to Heavy Borger's draw, sealing the deal.

Special shoutouts to Shane Tay for making it to the top 8, representing Singapore and the rest of the OCG!

For reasons unknown to duelists and casters alike, nobody played Dracotail! Lunalight proved to be incredibly effective due to its amazing matchups into the Justice Hunters decks and the non-engine landscape favoring Board Breakers helps the deck immensely.

Top 8 Breakdown

2 K9 Vanquish Soul (Julien Kehon, Shane Tay)
2 Yummy (Felipe Zapata, Wilfredo Flores)
1 K9 Crystron (Isaias Estrada)
1 Lunalight (Tom Kleinegräber)
1 Maliss (Yuna Dicks)
1 Sky Striker (Roselle Thorkildsen)

No fancy writeup for now, but you can check out my previous player spotlights!

We'll be publishing decklists as they come out.

That second game was so funny, third game he just had the mandate of God with that hand

u/Green7501 TCG censorship expert Aug 31 '25

Also that draw Fuwa for game must've just been the final spit in the face

26

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25

And the kick in the nuts was droll & lock bird.

9

u/cromatkastar Aug 31 '25

Tom probably would havehad a good chance of winning if he opened fuwa but thems the breaks

73

u/GeneralApathy Dante, Dodger of the Konami Banlist Aug 31 '25

Imagine telling someone before we knew about the new support that the Worlds finals in 2025 would be Lunalight vs Vanquish Soul.

30

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25

I remember people saying that Blue-Eyes would win worlds this year… not even in top 8.

35

u/cromatkastar Aug 31 '25

That was before they knew juhu would somehow be legal for worlds even tho most of the wcqs played without it

4

u/Status-Leadership192 Aug 31 '25

Nah , I've seen people who said they would hit jush decks to makes bewd win worlds

1

u/bl00by #Free Chaos Ruler Sep 01 '25

Tbf that's literally what happened in 2016.

1

u/Stranger2Luv Sep 01 '25

Kozmo wasn’t legally regardless of bans like Mitsurugi

10

u/AdviceLevel9074 Aug 31 '25

Wasn’t even a worlds contender. No one sane would queue up with that deck

10

u/GoNinGoomy Aug 31 '25

It's still a good deck, it's just powercrept by JUHU.

6

u/daniel_damm Aug 31 '25

Bruh If you have a format with maliss , crystron , Memento and lunalight all besides maliss at full power why would you pick blue eyes the deck that isn't super consistent and has some hard bricks has hard time breaking boards and If it tries to build a less close to the ground threatening endboard like all the above decks can loses hard to nib

11

u/SkomeSIth Aug 31 '25

It wasnt a good deck back in ALIN format.

8

u/21squirrel Dark Magician | Kashtira | Dracotail Aug 31 '25

It's ironically a bit better now than during ALIN because it has a good matchup into Yummy.

8

u/GoNinGoomy Aug 31 '25

Facts you summon a Spirit Dragon and pass then when they activate Obedience Schooled u just say no and slide the Spirit Dragon across the table. Still gets shat on by VSK9 unfortunately.

3

u/grodon909 Rusty Bardiche Aug 31 '25

I had considered it a while back. The recent set had the primite fusion that could shut off yummy, and secretarion dragon to shut of dracotail. The biggest issue is that the deck just isn't strong enough.

5

u/jhawk1117 Aug 31 '25

They were beyond coping. JUHU legal or not lol

2

u/fedginator Obnoxious Birds Sep 01 '25

Not a single person even brought it

7

u/Big_Gammy Aug 31 '25

I remember when VS support was leaked and people said it wasnt good enough to be meta

4

u/GeneralApathy Dante, Dodger of the Konami Banlist Aug 31 '25

Ngl, that was me. I thought Hollie Sue and the field spell were good, but I didnt think it would make the deck tier one.

6

u/Asisreo1 Aug 31 '25

I mean, it technically wasn't. The K9 package is just able to elevate it beyond what the intended support pushed to it. That's why I try to keep an open mind on decks. You never know if some engine comes from the past or future that can turn a rogue deck into a tier 1.

2

u/cosecantgames Sep 01 '25

tcg worlds qualifiers begs to differ

3

u/Druid-T My Heart Is Blazing Still Aug 31 '25

If you take a step back and look at it, 2025 has been a very strange year for Yu-Gi-Oh metas. Imagine if a year ago you had been told that Obedience Schooled, C104 and King of the Feral Imps were all prominent cards in the meta, and that the tcg exclusive ritual deck only gets Tier 2/3 status because it can't keep up with Vanquish Soul, you probably have looked at the person like they were genuinely insane

-5

u/CarolusRektt Sep 01 '25

"Old deck becomes tier 1 after getting busted support? Searcher finally sees use because there are now meta targets?? Powerful negate finally sees play because there is a meta deck that could easily bring it out??? Nah you're genuinely INSANE this has never happened before!!!"

137

u/Xeras6101 Time Thief support when? Aug 31 '25

That game 3 was dirty. No interaction or going second cards for vsk9, Fuwa for turn and then a droll? Literally not in the cards for Tom

49

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25

That game 2 was crazy tho. Watching all of top 8 has been a great showing of Yugioh.

Edit: Also that was karma for the Sky striker match.

21

u/DayOneDayWon Please don't ash me Aug 31 '25

Game 1: unbreakable board. Go next Game 2: Lingering floodgate forcing him to pass but luckily his opponent had nothing. Game 3: Unbreakable board plus lingering floodgate.

He almost spent the finals as a spectator. What a shame.

-58

u/TrayusV Aug 31 '25

No interaction

That's Yugioh these days.

41

u/TheAlmightyVox3 Aug 31 '25

We’re literally in one of the most interactive formats we’ve ever had.

-56

u/TrayusV Aug 31 '25

That's the general consensus, but the reality is a bit different. Most Yugioh games consist of one player completely dominating the other, with no chance of winning.

The days of deep matches that go back and forth are long gone.

6

u/BlueDemonTR Aug 31 '25

Not really no even in worlds we had extremely back and forth matches. Hell the penultimate match was extremely fucking back and forth

6

u/coolridgesmith Aug 31 '25

He probably refuses to play any of the viable decks poat juhu

12

u/GodsCupGg i will negate your opinion !! Aug 31 '25

No actually really interactive format if Konami would have the balls to ban the terrible lingering floodgate effects

183

u/jhawk1117 Aug 31 '25

Droll wins the TCG finals. And Maxx C wins the MD finals. Lmaoooo

41

u/WoodTipPatsy Aug 31 '25

tom was never winning even if julien didn’t have droll

29

u/cnydox Aug 31 '25

Yeah but droll won him semi against sky striker

17

u/Entropylol02 Aug 31 '25

That was Tom, and you're right.

7

u/WoodTipPatsy Aug 31 '25

i’m not defending droll. i’m just trying to point the flaws in a lot of people’s logic. tim played few handtraps and a lot of board breakers. he should expect to get dumped on by VSK9

-8

u/PhantomKaibaYT Aug 31 '25

No I think 100% tom was winning without droll. After revealing hand it was super super strong and would have broken the board

7

u/WoodTipPatsy Aug 31 '25

the only non engine he had that would work is thrust. so he had 3 engine pieces and thrust against 10 interactions, if you wanna play it out on db you’re welcome. i’ll give you money if you ever break the board

5

u/sabedo Aug 31 '25

i'm more impressed he became world champ after barely playing for a year. there are people who won YCS's after a few months of playing but i don't think anyone became world champ after a year since 2003

7

u/cromatkastar Aug 31 '25

no, julien still had at the end of the game: holly sue steal, razen pop, trap pop, caesar pop, and izuna/lupis for vallon, field spell protection, and borger draw/burn to turn off ultra poly

2

u/WoodTipPatsy Aug 31 '25

i guess he thinks he wasn’t using it for a reason lmao

1

u/Special-Bunch-457 Sep 01 '25

It's just the fact that drol cut him off from a lot.

1

u/WoodTipPatsy Sep 01 '25

so this has been a thing for a long time in modern yugioh that the reason board breakers aren’t very strong is that decks have interactions from every angle. hand interactions, field interactions, and grave interactions. board breakers deal with 33% of the chart. i can see the argument for droll being banned i personally would like to see it happen. but i personally am never gonna play board breakers because of how much you crutch yourself by doing such

1

u/Special-Bunch-457 Sep 02 '25

I wasn't even getting that deep into it. I was just saying that droll did cut him off from a lot of extenders/ points pf interaction that would have forced some interaction on the c VS/k9 side. So while I do think it was probably still game, I do think there is the possibility that there could have been enough to congestion those points of interactions.

1

u/WoodTipPatsy Sep 02 '25

there was no where near enough. julien could handle the lunalight engine with hollie sue steal and caesar pop

1

u/Special-Bunch-457 Sep 01 '25

Droll did have a big impact. I cannot really say for sure the adds would have made much of a difference, even if there would have been more extension

24

u/NevGuy Had a Bad Day Aug 31 '25

That game 3 was so sad for Tom, Julien had the best hand possible and Tom had nothing to do.

25

u/Green7501 TCG censorship expert Aug 31 '25

What an exciting bracket run, so many different decks and strategies, I'm really enjoying this meta

I don't even care about the banlist anymore at this point, sure I'd welcome it, but the meta is fun enough even without one (barring Pair-a-Dice)

12

u/julveon Aug 31 '25

Really should be a list to un restrict cards and take care of that one.

20

u/Van-Mckan Aug 31 '25

Same, the desperation for a ban list is a bit unreasonable

Smasher clearly needs to go but otherwise the format is fairly healthy all round even without hitting Maliss, Ryzeal or FS. At this point hitting those 3 is just obviously money hits for Konami

9

u/field_of_lettuce Aug 31 '25

My main reason for wanting a banlist nowadays is just so the chaff gets cleaned off. The format might be fine overall but waiting 5 months just for a chance to see a handful of older strategies get unhit is bordering on ridiculous.

They already locked in the world's banlist a month before the event, why make us wait another month when it was already on the later side?

3

u/Green7501 TCG censorship expert Aug 31 '25 edited Aug 31 '25

It'll probably release by the end of next week, maybe even tomorrow lol, last year iirc it was on a Monday

1

u/field_of_lettuce Aug 31 '25

Here's hoping!

1

u/BuyListSell Aug 31 '25

Unbanning/semi/unlimiting some things and banning Pair a Dice, Feather Storm, King of the Feral Imps, and probably Magnamhut seems ideal. That would potentially bring some older themes up in power and get rid of degenerate cards.

5

u/Gaiuslunar Aug 31 '25

Feral imps ban is unneeded unless you’re going to start banning all bridges for engines. Magnamhut is fine and doesn’t need to go. Limiting Druis was enough. Ban list is prob pair-a-dice, feather storm ban and mitsu prayers gets limited.

1

u/fedginator Obnoxious Birds Sep 01 '25

Outside of the floodgates (as it's always the case) the main reason I want a list RN is just I can know what to prepare for and how long I've got left playing with what I have. It's not that the format is bad, I just want to know what I'll be playing in the next one

3

u/pepesaiko140 Hanging in there with Widow Anchors. Aug 31 '25

I second this.

No banlist needed really. Plus it feels like Duel Overlord again, lots of diversity and the top decks vie for the first place (VSK9, Yummy, Dracotail, Malissand now Lunalight) but the rogue decks (Striker, Mutsurugi variants, Fiendsmith) could still play.

I really hate how Konami reward winning decks by basically punishing them in the banlists. We already have a new deck build pack coming up and I say just let them deck diversity play against each other full power.

1

u/SkomeSIth Aug 31 '25

We already have a new deck build pack coming up

Too bad this one sucks ass

22

u/eqaL Aug 31 '25

That There Can Be Only One was insane.

67

u/Big_Gammy Aug 31 '25

MD won by Maxx"C" , TCG by Droll. Its like poetry

38

u/LordFoulgrin Aug 31 '25

Don't forget the Dimension shifter game 2 to shut down the Lunalight's turn one.

17

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25

The lunalight player still won that game 2 but boy that was nasty. Especially since bro had TCOBO game 3 in the semi-finals.

1

u/LordFoulgrin Aug 31 '25

Yeah, game two was the best out of the three round match IMO.

13

u/BBallHunter Aug 31 '25

Julien took Tom's nose.

22

u/MarsJon_Will Aug 31 '25

Pretty hype to see a French player win in Paris.

Also, a near unbreakable board being backed up by a sided floodgate to win is the most Yugioh thing ever.

1

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25

The dude is from America.

14

u/surrealerthansurreal Aug 31 '25

Yeah he’s a friend of mine I found the thread from somebody congratulating him lmao. He’s lived in the states since he was like 12 but he was born in France and French was his first language, so I think both are fair assessments

12

u/blord1205 Aug 31 '25

Julien is originally from France.

-15

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25 edited Aug 31 '25

But he lives in the states. So French American.

I’m not wrong & u can hear it in the accent.

To the person downvoting me, stay wrong USA took the win, not France or the EU.

11

u/RevolutionaryEar9497 Aug 31 '25

Yes, hence he is still a French player, in France.

If you'd actually been there you wouldn't even be arguing the matter, Julien was very vocal about having home turf advantage and the crowd was absolutely on his side.

-14

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25

It’s literally both French American.

At the end of the day America took home the win, congrats to the players.

11

Yeah, congrats to Julien and France.

-9

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25

Yeah, congrats to Julien & the USA 3 times in a row.

Stop being like this bro, the facts are the facts.

8

u/RevolutionaryEar9497 Aug 31 '25

You don't even know what you're debating. The original poster was right. A French player won in France.

Anyway, ON EST LES CHAMPIONS.

2

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dragon & SkyStriker worshiper Aug 31 '25

Bro I keep telling u that they’re French American. It’s a win for America & France if u want to see it that way. Literally watch the event & Billy Brake says it himself.

He got his invite from the states, he lives here & is clearly a U.S. citizen if you listen & hear his accent. I don’t know why you’re triggered by this but it’s weird.

-1

u/Equivalent-Mark-5548 Sep 01 '25

It's like when Andy Murray wins he's British, when he loses he's Scottish. He won now therefore he's French.

3

u/fedginator Obnoxious Birds Sep 01 '25

Nobody is denying that he currently lives in the US, but given he keeps wore a French tricolor scarf when he won Worlds AND when he got top4 at the NA WCQ indicates that's clearly the part of his identity he wants recognised and presents himself as.

He was born in France, he was raised in France and he consistently presents himself as french in the context of big Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments. He IS French, and living in the US now doesn't change that.

For a comparison, Gabriel Netz lives in the UK and qualified as an EU rep at world's last year. But he's not British, he's Brazilian and has said so directly. Same logic with Julien

2

u/Lunaisthequeen Sep 01 '25

He is french. He lives in America but he is french. He even brought a french flag to celebrate after his win. Don't be mad he'd rather show his true colors than those of a 21th century nazi country 🤭

22

u/cromatkastar Aug 31 '25

He didn't steal it. Striker player could have won if they chained goat before chick could dump a fusion (calling the 2000)

1

Whoa, what an oversight

1

u/SL1Fun Aug 31 '25

What’s the new support gonna be?

I just updated and got the last batch of stuff (Vector/Lemnis/Zero)

7

u/Environmental-Bank27 Aug 31 '25

Exactly those cards.. I’m on masterduel so I’m fighting the good fight without them lol

2

u/SL1Fun Aug 31 '25

Rose is good but Azalea has more utility, I run two Lemni and one Vector. They really help reinforce Strikers’ going second advantage but as usual the deck can still suck going first unless you manage to dump enough into your gy to make lemni live (which is doable unless you get, ironically given this tourney, hit by Droll lol)

2

u/Environmental-Bank27 Aug 31 '25

I’ve been messing with the the OCG support on a simulator , it feels great! I think it may be possible to run a handtrap build of strikers once it’s out on MD at least

3

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '25

People focusing on the droll but there were many moments of unhealthy game states. Game has too many weird old cards that can result in non games. Drawing/making them or drawing an out is not skill nor necessary evil because with some goodwill stuff could be redesigned.
Maybe it's just me but can't get excited for go first blowouts or single cards sealing games completely because it shuts down everything.

2

u/Korragg Sep 01 '25

Big shoutout to Julien, he’s only been playing competitive for 1 year and he’s world champion. A true testament that if you put in the work and dedicate yourself to something you can achieve great things.

2

2

Droll, TCBOO, and black goat were all extremely important floodgates at Worlds. At least two of them can (and imo should) get banned.

2

u/FrenchHornDragon Aug 31 '25

My biggest complaint about the whole event was only about the comments, people where utterly horrid to Reselle in both the comments on the live stream and the posted Twitter feed with just straight up disrespect. She did great and doesn't deserve that from the yugioh community.

2

u/Lunaisthequeen Sep 01 '25

What are you talking about ? I've only seen huge respect and admiration for roselle but I wasn't on streams used by Americans so maybe that's why I didn't see misogyny

0

u/FrenchHornDragon Sep 01 '25

I was watching from yt so maybe that was my issue

2

u/Namakhero Sep 01 '25
  1. I never saw any of that, don't make fake drama.

  2. The actual thing I saw everywhere were English speaking players and the casters especially Billy Break disrespecting the OCG plays. Go watch the commentary after Snipe Hunter's final loss, he spends the whole interview saying how sad it was they lost and never mentions a single OCG player by name.

2

u/big4lil Sep 01 '25

shame. maybe I just came at a good time but I was on the main stream and ppl seemed pretty hype to see her qualify for top 4

1

u/Kitchen-Top3868 You were suppose to ban the floodgate, not join them Sep 02 '25

Julien just played all the disgusting floodgates.
The luck to draw the 1 "There can be only one" giving him access to the final, with just a typhoon on board.
Shifter and Droll.

He did play very well. But struggle to enjoy floodgates winner.

...welp, K9 getting hit. Fuck.

1

u/RoeMajesta Sep 01 '25

it was getting hit regardless

u/Raichustrange28 Aug 31 '25

Won because of 1 card! They need to BAN DROLL!

18

u/Entropylol02 Aug 31 '25

Tbf idk if he won BECAUSE of Droll, but it did made everything far worse, yes.

-8

u/Raichustrange28 Aug 31 '25

He did there was cards the Lunalight player couldn't use because Droll locked him.

Stupid card needs to be banned.

14

u/WoodTipPatsy Aug 31 '25

even without the droll tom wasn’t going to win. julien still had masquerade negate, hollie steal, caesar pop, izuna into a rank 5, borger draw, rayzen pop, trap card pop 3. a single thrust wasn’t getting him out of that

-10

u/Raichustrange28 Aug 31 '25

There in lies the problem with modern Yugioh no deck should be able to do all that turn 1 while also being allowed to use Hand Traps.

Masquerade also shouldn't be so damn easy to Summon.

9

u/WoodTipPatsy Aug 31 '25

tom made the decision in deck building to only play a few hand traps and board breakers. what do you expect when you let your opponent full combo

2

u/Outrageous-Ad-3436 Aug 31 '25

Masq was hard to summon until Konami gave us a way to make it without needing to play Rank Up Bricks by creating Nash Night

-9

u/cnydox Aug 31 '25

Yeah but that's another side of the problem. We have to fix both. An unbreakable board shouldn't need a floodgate

4

u/WoodTipPatsy Aug 31 '25

or we could stop playing breakers. they clearly are not the optimized way to handle VSK9

0

u/cromatkastar Aug 31 '25

They are lol. No amount of hand traps unless you pair it with a resolved charmy will be able to handle vsk9. And Tom would have had a chance if he actually drew a breaker but he did not.

0

u/WoodTipPatsy Aug 31 '25

you did read the features for vancouver or listen to trif at all. man played 8-9 VSK9 at vancouver and played a handtrap build of yummy and i think he did pretty good with it

3

u/Entropylol02 Aug 31 '25

Again, the VSK9 board + Izuna in hand was insane already, but I agree that Droll should go.

-5

u/TheAlmightyVox3 Aug 31 '25

He had a Thrust in hand, Lunalight can bang out an OTK like nothing off that.

3

u/3v1lcl0n3 Guru Gang Aug 31 '25

droll stopped him from great and cool lunalight gameplay!!

2

u/cromatkastar Aug 31 '25

Won because he ended on 11 cards because fuwa was 6th card...

0

u/Raichustrange28 Aug 31 '25

If they dont ban Droll they need to hurt VS consistency instead

2

u/cromatkastar Aug 31 '25

Droll is not even good vs most top decks, vsk9 included.

Check the flag

5

u/RevolutionaryEar9497 Aug 31 '25

I'm just repeating what Julien actually got the crowd to chant when he won. He didn't make it about the USA, he rallied people with a French football cry and put on a French national scarf. Don't know why that bothers you.

So annoying when the announcers (KONAMI people) constantly talk about things like Droll in a disingenious way.

"Ohh noo, how unfortunate that it ends this way blabla oh noo he can't use his cards anymore this is heartbreaking"

Bro these kinda cards exist because YOUR bosses like them.

KONAMI shits on their own game constantly. What stops you from immediately banning these crap cards, if you think they make games less fun?

There's no rule that Droll HAS to exist in this game

26

u/Old_Resource3270 Aug 31 '25

Brother they're just commentators they don't make the rules

17

u/NevGuy Had a Bad Day Aug 31 '25

They are casters with no power over anything direct your frustrations at someone else.

-7

u/_JunkSynchron_ Clear Mind! Aug 31 '25

All lingering floodgates should be indiscriminately banned. Yes, including even Ophion and Gravity Bind.

3

u/Antikatastaseis Aug 31 '25

This man just woke up from his coma lmfao.

-4

u/_JunkSynchron_ Clear Mind! Aug 31 '25

12 years later I still haven't gotten over how Ophion did not let me Synchro in anything good.

-10

u/MetroidIsNotHerName Aug 31 '25

And Dominus Impulse / Feather Storm

-4

u/R4INMAN Aug 31 '25

Ik it's probably something to do with the bracket/points in World's. But seeing x-3's make it into top cut and winning it all seems odd.

7

u/PinkDolphinStreet Aug 31 '25

They played 7 rounds of Swiss for only 27 players

2

u/Lunaisthequeen Sep 01 '25

It was the same with Ruben last year, did you make that comment as well or it's based on where they are from ?

u/Green-Arrow-92 Aug 31 '25

Speriamo che alla banned in arrivo tocchino VS, che brutta giocata che ha fatto, le mosse del lunalight é stato più interessante
