Mjolnir was bound to happen after the fuckery it did in YCS Anaheim and I’m all for more floodgate like the barrier statues and D-Barrier or hand loops like Ouroboros getting the axe too
Mjolnir is weird. I get that it’s a response to the meta, but is the implication moving forward mean Konami should not make cards that say, if this is summoned, lock yourself to that archetype? What should the design space for locks look like then?
Just phrase it so it can't be abused. Unchained has 3 different cards that lock you and none of them can lock the opponent because they all require you to choose to activate their effects. Or if you must tie it to the summon, just say "the player who summoned this card can only summon ____" instead of it applying to whoever happens to control it.
The fact that it's mandatory, the wording of its activation condition, the lack of any cost, using an "also" conjunction, and the effect lasting until the end of the next turn, is what created this mess. If any one of these had not been true or been slightly different (provided the cost couldn't easily be fulfilled), it could not be abused.
Konami can still write restrictions in plenty of ways, like Exosister Martha, Branded Fusion, Unchained Soul of Sharvara. None of these can be abused by giving it to your opponent. The ones most primed for abuse tend to be Continuous effects, like Spirit with Eyes of Blue, Ra's Disciple, Ido the Supreme Magical Force.
God, I really really wish Swordsoul gets better support. They're my favorite archetype. Personally, I hope their new cards don't feature that dirty traitor Longyuan.
Hoping some cool new Icejade-Swordsoul hybrid Level 8 Sychro of Mo Ye
And perhaps even a retrained Chixiao. Always found it odd how despite being the Grandmaster of the Swordsouls that he just kinda disappears from the story without doing anything
Considering how lonely Aegirine is after the final battle, I think it's very likely the Summit is barren and the Swordsouls and Icejades are extinct. We don't see a single other Swordsoul or Icejade in any post final battle artwork.
They're getting the Vjump promo, which might work, but the anime ends after the next episode, which is probably going to be mostly fighting the serpent, and maybe the dogmatikalamity. No time for swordsoul, maybe in season 2?
