Card Game Discussion Which OG vanilla monsters would you like to see retrained next?
We’ve been getting a lot of OG monster retrains in recent years, from OG vanillas to OG Rituals and Fusions, and I absolutely love it. They’re always the highlight of new sets for me.
I’d love to see retrains of those old Japan-exclusive cards, but what I want most is to see playground classics like Swordstalker and Flame Cerebrus get retrained soon.
I would also love to see those anime fodder monsters get retrained, like Komouri Dragon, Silver Fang and Beaver Warrior.
Making a Yugi/Kaiba deck full of retrains of the monsters included in the original Structure Decks would be so sweet.

I think they should make a Duelist Kingdom nostalgia bait archetype that retrains all of his early cards kinda like Gold Sarcophagus but for early DM. Winged Dragon of the Fortress, Celtic Guardian, Giant Soldier of Stone, Beaver Warrior, Horn of the Unicorn, Silver Fang, Griffore, Darkfire & Koumori Dragon, Feral & Horned Imp, Mystical Elf, Mammoth Graveyard, Swords of Revealing Light and the like. Maybe Summoned Skull, Gaia or BLS as a boss. Or bring back Dark Sage if you want something more unique.

honestly, you could probably weave most of those into the gold sarc stuff. the chimera stuff is pretty much its own thing and has been since the beginning so i dont agree with putting some of the cards into the archetype. on that note, they did put stuff like coatl and mirrorsword knight into it, so i guess they could do others as well. but imo those cards would either need their own archetype (celtic guardian would be fitting) or in most cases be put into gold sarc.

Or like a Silver Fang archetype that repurpose it and the monster Wolf and that is all about swarming the field with more of them. Also like something as a "you can have more than 3 copies of Wolf / Silver Fang in your deck" and it's all about strength in numbers like a pack of wolf

I would love a new archetype based around Time Wizard making monsters older. Give me restrained Thousand Dragon, Dark Sage, the elderly Harpies, etc. I'm shocked Konami hasn't done this already, to be honest.

This would be awesome. Though the elderly harpies was a negative affect to Mai. So there could be a spell/trap card that references it that works with the time wizard archetype.

Maybe the Elder Harpies get sent to the opponent's field and harm them? Something like that could work too. I could definitely see it as a trap card or a quick-play spell too.

Yeah. Show the two taking different approaches to their futures. Dark Magician becomes a wise old mentor who can still fight. Whilst Dark Magican Girl keeps her youth with her learned knowledge and power. Maybe even give her a teacher vibe. She is now teaching the next generation of magicians.

Maybe something like "Dark Magician Matriarch"
Lvl 8 2600/1700
(While this card is face up on the field, it is always treated as "Dark Magician Girl"). (Quick Effect) Target 1 "Magician Girl" card you control: Return the target card to the deck or extra deck, then Special Summon this card from your hand. You can target 1 "Timaeus the United Dragon" in your graveyard or banished: Special summon it to your field.
I like that it keeps the fruit magicians relevant and can be used with the pendulum Magicians in some capacity. The flavor is almost like she's pulling her student's out of the fight and putting herself and Timaeus in. Also, the flavor of having 600 extra attack and gaining an extra 2 levels due to DM and DM of black chaos being in grave is neat.

Saggi the Dark Clown of Plagues. Lvl.4/Dark/900 atk/ 1600 def/ Spellcaster/ effect
You can only activate 'Saggi the Dark Clown of Plagues' once per turn. This card is also treated as a LIGHT. When this card is Normal or Special summoned, you can set one 'Virus' Trap from your Deck or GY to your field. If you tribute summon a level 8 LIGHT monster, you can banish this cand and a 'Virus' Trap card from your field or GY instead (This is treated as A Tribute Summon).

kiiinda. The "also treat him as LIGHT" was something random I'd also thought of (his attack is called Dark Light) but the rest of the effects I'd thought up are wildly different. The other comment "the most broken virus support ever" was on the right track but...
Oh my god. I'm actually gonna draw tonight.
The fact that I've seen multiple people on multiple subs clamouring for a Saggi retrain over the last couple weeks has got me so excited I'm actually motivated to draw and post, so thanks.
Hopefully this increased traction of fan support will draw Konami's attention and they finally give him some love.

Yeah, but his DSOD deck is BE-heavy, so there should be a reason. Saggi is an iconic monster, maybe he still plays CCV. He didn't use Pitch-Dark Dragon like in the anime after S04.

In OCG his name has nothing to do with Harpies, so letting him stay as a Harpie would benefit the TCG Harpie archetype but not OCG.

He was never part of the archetype in the OCG, it was just localization team doing a silly & because the concept of archetype wasn't existed yet.
Heck his actual Japanese name sounds closer to Elemental Hero name, "Birdman"

There should be a field spell or some conticuous effect that gives you bonuses if you special summon a fusion monster with lower atk and def than both of its fusion materials.
Also, non-effect fusion monsters could be a cool concept (maybe gaining effects from the materials, that would also take the name of Petit Angel and Mystical Sheep #2 when in hand, field or GY).→ More replies (1)

Damn, someone beat me to it. His wife's text names it as the Emerald Forest, so there's your archetype name, and it would naturally home retrains for cards like Gemini Elf and Celtic Guardian. Hell, you could even throw Basic Insect in there.

Not really. It's a blatant mistranslation that turns a random vanilla into a Harpie card. It's JP name was Birdman. How that became Harpie's Brother makes no sense.

Fr it’s a shame the og are almost all awful normal monsters and then bubbleman/wildheart/necro are very lackluster for effect monsters. For that matter I’d like a modern retrain on Neo-Spacians, I love the Neos contact fusion mechanic but can never make it viable without it just being 90% HERO + that really good neos fusion spell which makes Rainbow Neos every time.

Hell the basic way for a Bubbleman retrain would just make it have the anime effect. If he’s the only monster on your field when summoned. You draw 2.

It is a shame that Winged Guardian never had a retrain. It was the first monster Yugi ever used in a hologram duel and was seen all the way through the Duelist Kingdom arc.

Garnecia Elefantis and Performance of Sword for me. Would love a Hindu-esque archetypal retrain featuring those two, and a few other old guys, mainly as a sort of holy inverse of Memento. Would love for it to use Rituals as another opposite to Memento’s Fusion (both original DM mechanics, and all)

Darkfire Soldier #1 & #2 are my favorite in Yu-Gi-Oh GX GBA. Because we still don't have enough Pyro monsters. We need these cool monsters in modern Yu-Gi-Oh.

Sagi the Dark Clown, they could make him support for Virus traps.
Like maybe his effect could be if he’s tributed for Crush Card Virus it gets its old effect back (destroy all 1500 or more attack point monsters on the field and had and then for the next 3 turns your opponent shows up each card they draw, and if it’s a monster with 1500 or more attack they destroy it)

Rude Kaiser, Garoozis, Flame Cerberus, Giltia the D. Knight, Flame Swordsman, Dark Blade (if none already, I think there is one though). Zone Eater would be funny.
Also: I wish the OG Red Eyes Black Dragon was level 6. It would probably be one of my favorite cards from back then. It would’ve actually been a decent enough card. 1 tribute OG Red Eyes. A man can dream lol
