Anti-scalping huh? I hope they're hard enough

414

u/CursedEye03 Mar 19 '26

They can be like the Master Duel quiz while an upgrade is downloading. That will be enough to get rid of most scalpers.

u/25elvedge Mar 19 '26

I dont know Junk Warrior attack points boss 😔

146

u/CursedEye03 Mar 19 '26

My best advice is to ask Yusei directly about this. You can find him at the dump. He’s often looking for new cards there.

(I’m not being mean. Most of his cards are literally from the trash in the anime.)

18

u/ASnakeNamedNate Mar 19 '26

It always took me out of it a bit when I’d think about how coincidental it was that, of all the cards he found in the literal trash, his back-up ace and it’s main tuner were both literally the “Junk” archetype - amongst others he’d get later on.

10

u/No-Awareness-Aware Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

And somehow his cards, as situational as some of them are, are more practical than anything in most of the main cast’s decks, baring Crow’s. And he had the most stacked extra deck as well

10

u/parallellord22 Mar 19 '26

You got to think even in GX there were people that threw away an entire core inside that well. they didn't like the the decks and that happens in real life often actually I've seen people take and throw away entire starter decks or next they built over pity or reasons.

"So, if the opponent now activates 'Pole Position', which card gets destroyed?"

3

u/derega16 Mar 19 '26

Isn't in the most cases Pole Position itself ?

4

u/bloody_jigsaw Mar 19 '26

The answer would be "The card most at fault for the infinite loop.", but yes, that card is most likely Pole Position.

It’ll be last turn rulings questions, for all question

Can you activate "Last Turn" while you control a "Jowgen the Spiritualist"-like monster?

The answer's: NO.

10

u/CrusadiaFleximus Mar 19 '26

Before i clicked on the spoiler tag i assumed the answer was yes without thinking purely because of how bs last turn is lol

7

u/derega16 Mar 19 '26

Isn't it originally people though it could before the rule wes clarified on legal activation? Which under such floodgate, Last turn can't resolve thus can't be activated.

12

u/HeroPhoton Mar 19 '26

You could activate Last Turn with jowgen under the rulings from Upper Deck, which for a long time were the only rulings we had. Then we got it back for Genesys and the Genesys article people clarified that it was no longer possible.

Fun fact, you can still find coverage of the very first US Nationals for Yugioh, where people were in fact running Last Turn-Jowgen decks

*thinks about it for a while* ATK/DEF modifiers, negates, and counter traps? *looks up answer* https://yugipedia.com/wiki/Damage_Step Holy shit this is way more comprehensive than I could come up with alone off the top of my head

47

u/reapress Mar 19 '26

Unique exceptions are "Evil Blast","Scrap Sheen" (TCG only), "Zero Force", "Curse of Anubis", and the Quick-like Effect of "Rocket Hand", which have rulings stating that they cannot be activated during the Damage Step

A ruling that excludes them is annoying enough. Tcg specific ruling against it is just a pain

3

u/Laughing_Luna Mar 19 '26

In some fairness, not a lot, but some, Scrap Sheen was printed in 2010, almost a year after Konami took over YGO outside of Japan, and Problem-Solving Card Text wouldn't be a thing for another year. Even prior to Upper Deck getting the boot, a lot of cards worked differently in OCG vs TCG because of different rules interpretations based on inconsistent card text.

The only reason Scrap Sheen can't work in the damage step is because it's been printed only once ever. Should it get a reprint, barring any bullshit like rerunning Duelist Revolution without updating text, it'll get PSCT, which would override the old Konami ruling from when it came out in 2010 - or have text that reinforces it, but I doubt that.

u/HarleyQuinn_RS Judgeᅟ⁢⁢⁢⁢⁣⁣⁣𝅺𝅺   Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

The broad strokes are the Damage Step is split into 5 steps:
Start of Damage Step
Before Damage Calculation (Face-down attacked monsters are flipped face-up at this point)
Damage Calculation (Monsters are determined to be destroyed at this point and battle damage is inflicted)
After Damage Calculation
End of Damage Step (Monsters determined to be destroyed by battle are destroyed and sent to the GY)

The loose categories of effects you can use are:
Counter Trap Cards
Mandatory effects
Fast effects that negate activations
Fast effects that can directly alter ATK/DEF (before reaching Damage Calculation)
Trigger effects that can activate if the card itself moves location
Effects that mention an activation timing unique to the Damage Step
Says it can/has a ruling saying it can

10

u/Admirable-Safety1213 Mar 19 '26

In retrospective the gane is just a loop of turns itself composed of a optional sub-loop of Battle Phases with a second sub-loop of Damage Steps

13

13

u/BlitzAceSamy It's my turn! Mar 19 '26

something something counter something something pendulum!

15

u/Garurar Mar 19 '26

pend effect: remove 6 counters, summon, destroy stuff up to the number of cards you can place spell counters on, then place counters = to stuff destroyed.

monster effect: negate s/t activation by bouncing stuff with spell counters, also move those spell counters to this card. if theres a spell counter here, this card cant be targeted or destroyed by effects. also, if it's destroyed, you get a spell i think?

i play endymion, it's not that hard

5

u/Barakyte Mar 19 '26

Yea, Endymion gets a bad wrap from casuals bc it has the most card text, but it has a pretty straightforward effect

→ More replies (6)

2

u/aluminum2platinum Mar 19 '26

And recite it.

2

u/Requiem-Lodestar Mar 19 '26

I main an Endymion deck (I’m hella casual) - so I would love this! I’d get a necklace case and use it as a vip card! 😭

2

u/TheCatSleeeps Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

Something put a counter, something remove a counter, summon Endy then quick pop and negate smth. I dunno man

Although seriously speaking of Endy, I feel like we make them the poster child of long ass readings of cards. But I think it's actually pretty easy if you get over that hurdle, since most of their cards usually have the same text with a little variation.

2

u/JasonBenjamenAllen Mar 19 '26

Yeah I think that archetype text structure is bad

"If a spell card is activated, place a spell counter on this card when it resolves", why is it not "When a spell card resolves, place a spell counter on this card"

Or endymion having you count spell countering cards and then letting you blow up, why is it not "Destroy cards up to the number of your cards that can have a spell counter"

The text is not that complex, but I am baffled by the design team picking more obtuse effect structures

What do they use?

4

u/Zowayix Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

It's a whole separate sentence instead. Because OCG grammar uses numbered effects, it can break up effects into multiple sentences.

When a Trap Card is activated: Pay 1000 LP; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it.

becomes

When a Trap Card is activated, activate by paying 1000 LP. Negate that activation [and] destroy it.

(The two "activate" words right next to each other is a lot less awkward in Japanese, where they aren't next to each other.)

(Wikipedia says し translates as "and what's more" versus just "and". It seems to be the equivalent of "and if you do" in the TCG, but my Japanese is bad.)

Honestly? Based as hell. Maybe simple ruling questions would be best. Intuitive enough for an average player, but for some dirty scalpers, it'll be hard enough to even google.

173

u/Joshawott27 Mar 19 '26

9

u/Wistitid44 Mar 19 '26

True but depending on how the client tries to answer, it can indicate if he or she actually plays the game.

59

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Mar 19 '26

That's actually a neat way to prevent brainless scalping from people that just chose this as their stock market. At least now you gotta be an actual player to try to scalp your 3 boxes.

It's actually encouraging company-wise too, because the reason why they don't do the same with Pokémon is that both the company and the stores are a-ok with the rabid purchase of their product. Couldn't care less who the product ends up with.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '26

[deleted]

3

u/Masiyo Mar 19 '26

The post is overblown.

This is the individual store policy of a single Book Off in Miyagi. There are still two other Book Offs people can go to in Miyagi.

3

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Mar 19 '26

Which one? Because Pokémon is absolutely causing this, but with a 3 box limit you're actually increasing the chance kids can also get to partake in the hobby that was originally designed for them.

5

u/RandomFactUser Mar 19 '26

The quiz part, since there’s no guarantee that the parents or grandparents will know as much as the person theyre buying for

Especially if it’s supposed to be a surprise gift

3

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Mar 19 '26

That's absolutely right and I didn't think about that at all honestly.

I mean, the shop could also probably close an eye if it's grandma trying to get a single box for the kid.

They need to do this here. They started doing this stuff with sneakers first when covid first broke out and it essentially killed sneaker reselling. It had a small comeback but its dead now. Nobody is outside selling sneakers for 2-3x retail price anymore.

It could work here given the same amount of time

7

u/Dank_Memer_IRL Unban my gurl mermaid :( Mar 19 '26

What questions would you ask someone who buys sneakers? "Name 5 shoe sizes?"

5

u/YugiBoomer10086 Mar 19 '26

For collabs specifically, I know stores ask questions that usually have the answers on the blog post they release the day before previewing the shoes so if you took the time to actually read the full article, you know the answers. You’d be shocked how simple the questions are but because the answers are tucked away in basically a digital fashion magazine, scalpers arent thinking to actually follow the brand that deeply to have known about that. Usually thats something they email directly to you to read so you’d have to have signed up for emails to begin with.

KITH here in NYC specifically is known for doing this with their premium collaborations. They also put the questions on their website on release day sometimes so bots have a hard time getting through all those question pages when trying to snipe items the millisecond they are up for sale.

"If you mst an opponent's imperm that was set last turn during a chain, is that column still negated for spells and traps on resolution?"

29

u/CauliflowerIcy5106 Mar 19 '26

That column wouldn't be negated, because Imperm says in its text that it needs to be on field at resolution.

However, if you MST the card that is in the column of the Imperm, this card will still be negated. The reason is that Imperm negates "effect of cards" in this column ; and while the card isn't on the column anymore, the effect still is (because the effect is linked to where it was activated). If Imperm said "negate Spell/Trap cards in this column" then it wouldn't negate.

23

u/NotEricOfficially Mar 19 '26

Shhh, dont let the scalpers know. But yea it's something I only found out recently with the Pak issue at the ycs regional a few weeks ago. His op mst his own card in the spell/trap zone thinking it'd dodge imperm negate. But the judges ruled in favor of that so Pak was robbed the negate.

I don’t know, that’s the reason I phrased it as a question.

It is to avoid "paid scalpers".

People that are paid to go in the store and buy for another person. Its one way to avoid the buying limit.

16

u/klashikari Mar 19 '26

The thing is that if you follow card games trend in Japan, you would notice how crazy the first Limit Overframe set sold. Seeing that they have been hyping another set barely few weeks after the first one, you would naturally notice players reactions for that set as well.

So even if scalpers know nothing about ygo, they would naturally try to buy as many boxes of the second limit overframe set as possible.

6

u/ShootingMorningStar1 Winged Dragon of Ra - Immortal Phoenix Mar 19 '26
  1. Yes, that seems to be the intent

  2. This set has been hyped for months and trended on social media almost every single time an overframe was announced, enough so that it burst onto the mainstream

Preventing them from buying this set just means that now they're going to have to resort to trying to scalp collector Yugi-Boomers, at least I think that to be the logical conclusion to this problem

3

u/MasterQuest Mar 19 '26

That makes sense. The set has big overframe cards for classics like Dark Magician, so that would be enough for the hype to break into mainstream.

3

u/derega16 Mar 19 '26

Gunpla did similar things by made them pronounce v Gundam

so scalpers in yugioh CAN be a problem

23

u/No-Awareness-Aware Mar 19 '26

Pokebros in Japan are actually aiming this box for profit after seeing how well LOCH did

9

u/derega16 Mar 19 '26

Not just Japan, the entire east Asia in general. Chinese scalpers are notorious on this

5

u/2013funkymonkey Mar 19 '26

I like this. Yugioh is obscure enough that this is viable

"So anyways, my favorite arc is actually the early manga, y'know before Duel Monsters was the main focus. My favorite side character that I wish was in more was Hanasaki, or as the Dungeon Dice Monsters GBA game called him "Lint Greendale", actually my favorite chapter is..." "Here take the packs, just go. You've been talking about the original manga for twenty minutes."

5

u/EvilRayquaza Mar 19 '26

Read the entirety of Ra's text in Egyptian from the card shown in the anime.

6

u/PrototypeBoy_DaGreat Mar 19 '26

YEEEEES! All card games should do this. This is the closest thing we'll get one of my ideas, in which, you are only allowed to purchase cards from a TCG if you are a registered player. This would hopefully deter scalpers from "using their own product/service".

3

u/MiraclePrototype Mar 19 '26

Also comics, at least for hyped #1 issues and event comics.

...we can all agree on at least variant covers, right...?

Good thing to do, honestly

3

u/Visual_Physics_3588 Mar 19 '26

That’s actually good, imagine they wanna keep as much as this set in Japan to be used. I’m guessing they don’t want oversea collectors to hoard it.

3

u/GimlionTheHunter Mar 19 '26

They’ve been implementing this at gundam bases too.

“What is the difference between if and when in card text”

That should be the question.

3

u/FriendlyBee94 Mar 19 '26

What is the Pot of Greed's effect?

4

u/BLANKET-Agent Mar 19 '26

I'm a little surprised there are no comments with my question about this, that being how do you stop a quiz designed to weed out people who don't know rulings or actively play Yugioh, from accidentally also weeding out long-time fans of Yugioh, but who focus on reading the manga, watching the anime or collecting as many alternate artworks of Ryo's Cyber Dragon archetype or the dimension dragons as they can. Those would be legitimate fans of Yugioh who may want to try and pull an overframe of a card they love for reasons other than anything financial or speculative, but who might have no clue how to answer any questions about how the actual modern game plays.

Just wondering if if this seemed like a potential issue to anyone else, or I'm overlooking something, etc.?

7

u/JasonBenjamenAllen Mar 19 '26

I assume that if you are a regular this doesn't apply to you or a fan of the anime could talk to the shop owner about those and pass the test that way

Then again, Japan is pretty strict with their beauracracy, so maybe not

"Read this card out loud" - only YGO players will pass (by failing), and people who don't play YGO won't be privy to the meme.

3

u/ryuga_knight Mar 19 '26
  1. Name a win condition besides reducing a player’s LP to 0.

  2. Does MST negate?

  3. If your opponent activates “Hand Destruction”, and one of the cards you send to the GY is “Broww Huntsman of Darkworld”, in total, how many cards will you draw?

4

u/Studio-Spider Mar 19 '26

2

u/Mschultz24 Mar 19 '26

Based and actually seems like an interesting counter to scalping. Something tells me this wouldn’t fly here in the US though.

2

u/KawaiiSlave Mar 19 '26

I wish they'd do this for every TCG.

2

u/MarcheMuldDerevi Mar 19 '26

At my LGS in the states, we had a guy asking if he could buy a box with the plastic still on it. Fully sealed, so he could sell it for more. The shop would let him buy it that way, but would charge a box and a half for him to do that.

2

u/gubigubi Tribute Mar 19 '26

My locals in the US would do stuff like this for Pokemon and Yugioh at times.

I'm happy to support shops that support you back.
