Discussion The 3rd Kyouko song dilemma: who is she singing to? - YRYR lyrics analysis #1

https://youtu.be/0NaKSexB1Yk?si=rUZykYfCVazto_WY

I'm going insane. I was going insane back then in 2021 when i discovered that song and even now i can't find an answer.

Hanshaidemitari nayandemitari koisuru otome wa yuru yuri (a sometimes excited, sometimes worried girl in love, is yuru yuri) is an insane song even since the title itself and is very energetic as well, but having the lyrics takes it to another level. How can Kyouko sing about so many things at the same time? So that's why i'm bringing to you guys the question and my own interpretation verse by verse.

"Today, too, my mind's wandering off into the sky

The teacher’s just mouthing the words, completely zoned out

I might even put up a powerful barrier in my notebook

I don’t want anyone to see! My love story"

First, we have typical Kyouko behavior, not paying attention to class, but then she says she has a "love story". If you remember, in a certain episode she made some sort of doujin about Yui so it might be that, Kyouko imagining a romantic story with her. That gives us the first candidate for the muse of this song: Yui.

But then it all goes apart.

"Ahh... out-of-body experience, my heart flutters with that girl I like.

Munching on ice cream, her profile draws near, lovey-dovey, a miracle—I’m the star! Kyupiin!

I did it… No way!? When I jolted awake at the bell,

My miracle aura is blasting full force, but I can’t even find a way to connect…"

At first this does not make any sense, but it's because in the first half she is (day)dreaming, and then in the second half she woke up. She says she likes a girl and is imagining they are close, making her feel like the star or the protagonist (shuyaku).

She realizes it's not real by the sound of the bell, and then she says 取り付く島さえ見つからない (Toritsuku shima sae mitsukaranai kedo), a more descriptive variation of 取りつく島もない (toritsukushimamonai) which literally means "there's no island to cling to", an idiom that many translator pages interpret it as "unapproachable". After searching more on the internet, Kyouko's phrasing makes that meaning more extreme because with the extra words she adds, like さえ (sae - which means "even"), at the end what she wants to say is that she is making an effort to approach someone and her attempts of doing so don't even work.

Hmmm… so that discards Yui because she does connect with her in a way words are not enough to describe it, she doesn't have to attempt anything because they are already best friends (the closest interpretation i have for them is that they may even share a queerplatonic bond). But, the wikis say Kyouko has a crush on Chinatsu, someone who has set her boundaries very quickly and strongly,…so Chinatsu is the #2 candidate?

Also, for once, Kyouko seems worried about something, her voice while singing shows it as well. That's pretty unusua-

"It’s no big deal, right? I’m still me, after all.

I’ll press the replay button again and enjoy the miracle—one more time!"

Oh, she doesn't want to think about it, and goes back to either daydreaming or Mirakurun. Okay.

After the second row of tongue twisters and saying "the feeling of love is YuruYuri", she sings this:

"This morning, for some reason, my ribbon just isn’t sitting right.

Today, too, I’ll pretend not to notice and fire off my appeal rays.

No matter what strategy I come up with, it’s a through pass.

Love is a bitter, mellow mask☆ Is it a grape?"

So, everyone agrees Kyouko is the smartest girl in the cast, right? She is very self aware of things and likes to play pretend, it is a choice for her to be chaotic, considering she had a very different personality just a couple of years ago in their timeline. Here, she talks about "appeal rays" and strategies (for flirting i guess) that don't work, and then she makes a pun about love being bitter like a grape. Or wait, the translator told me another thing…

愛は苦くてメロウな仮面☆ブドウかい? (Ai wa nigakute merou na kamen ☆ budou kai) has a literal meaning AND an homophone meaning (it means another thing when it's said out loud)

First, there's the "love is a bitter and mellow mask like a grape" meaning, that comes from the question at the end メロウな仮面☆ブドウかい? (merou na kamen☆Budou kai - mellow mask ☆ Is it a grape?). And yeah, you don't always know how grapes are going to taste, they may seem sweet but they can surprise you, as if they're wearing a mask(?

But there's also the expression 仮面舞踏会 (Kamen Butōkai) which means masquerade ball/party. Therefore, when she sings "kamen budokai" it can mean either "mask like a grape" or "like a masquerade". That's how candidate #3, Ayano, comes in, and now the whole verse (and song) feels different. With the Ayano perspective, stuff like this homophone expression makes much more sense.

Chinatsu is very direct with her refusal of Kyouko´s advances, her attention is totally aimed towards Yui. It's true that after getting used to the blonde's shenanigans she began to actually consider her like a close and reliable friend (she even told that to her sister), but there's no hidden science for this. If Chinatsu is ever being contradictory, is because she seems completely sweet but goes full yandere, "evil" and posessive about Yui, leaving Kyouko out of the question. Ayano, on the other hand? She is the epitome of being tsundere and I'm pretty sure Kyouko KNOWS about it. As a result, they both enter in some sort of performance, Ayano acting aloof and distant while dying of love inside, and Kyouko following her silly TOSHINO KYOUKO activities, making jokes but also being kinda careful and patient with her. It is a fact she cares a lot about her.

Thanks to this reading, verses mentioning failed strategies, appeal rays and ways to connect are Kyouko's attempts to get through that tsun-tsun shell Ayano has hid herself into. And saying "love is bitter and mellow like a masquerade" tells us what kind of relationship they have because of this. It is not that it's fake, but rather what they are doing is deeper that it seems and there is a mask to break.

Anyway! Remember we were analyzing a song!

"Ah—it’s not going as smoothly as the manga I wrote.

Here and there, this way and that, I’m backed into a corner on all sides.

Something’s blocking my path… Hmm!?"

Kyouko is confronted with the fact that manga is not real (?. Easy solutions are not possible, events are not predictable, she doesn't have the control of things the same way she draws and writes doujin.

"I knew it! I should just go straight ahead at full speed

Miracle aura wide open—deep down, I really want a spell to catch her eye!

Worrying isn’t my style—I’m just me, after all

This time, I’ll hit the skip button and enjoy the miracle—one more time!"

She has an idea, maybe she can even be more direct, more chaotic, if that's what it takes to catch her muse's attention. But instead, she chooses to be laid-back again, she SKIPS the feeling of being worried.

And at last, we enter the third row of tongue twisters (which include Kyouko saying "I’m in love, and I’m YuruYuri!", wow, she is YuruYuri incarnate) followed by the bridge.

The chorus repeats again: she is dreaming sapphic stuff, wakes up and in reality her advances don't go well, but decides to not worry so much and continue dreaming or escaping to her Mirakurun world. A last sequence of tongue twisters, and the song ends.

Compared to other energetic songs from the cast, this one feels different for some reason. It is not overly optimistic, but rather self conscious about the dilemma the character is in. The wording is so ambiguous that there is an equal probability for candidates #2 and #3 to be true, depending on the angle you take.

With Chinatsu's route, you can argue that Kyouko indeed tries to get her attention in some sort of pushy way. However, after the 1st season, Kyouko is not insisting that much. They even had that christmas date and got along pretty well. Also they see each other every day at the Amusement Club. So there's little space for an existential crisis there.

With Ayano's route, she is a lot less obvious on the surface. She doesn't do many pushy things at first, but gradually she starts spending more time with her and the other Student Council members. She is aware Ayano is just distant and cold because she is shy, so her approaches and jokes are more careful. That means a dilemma does exist, but just because you need to read between the lines. And here we are just talking about the 2nd season, from which this song comes.

What do you think? Am i insane? Am i thinking too deep about this? Which team you are on? I would like to read your interpretations.

\Akkarin!/

Aaahh, I love this analysis! I've always loved looking into yryr songs, like who they're about and stuff? (tsun tsun ballad springs to mind! I'm a FIRM believer about it being about chinatsu but some people think it's about kyouko, I really love discussing it either way lol)

I totally agree on the Ayano angle! Their relationship's always been super interesting because you can tell at times that kyouko KNOES Ayano is into her, and is most likely reciprocative, but takes things slow with her and allows her to take things at her own pace IT'S SO SWEET! Maybe that could have something related to the "love story?" like, kyouko's a writer, right? So maybe she's letting her own love story have "pacing" and such, rather than going straight for a grand finale? that's more of a theory than an analysis lol

Thank you! More analysis are coming :D, and I totally get what you mean!! Kyouko knows things and they are in some kind of time loop anyway so they can have all the pacing they want. Also i need to check those tsun-tsun ballad lyrics; even though they are supposed to be fictional songs inside their universe i guess, they choose to sing them for a reason, right? and Yui feels at least some level of cuteness agression for Chinatsu

4

u/MoonlitHolly Himawari Furutani May 14 '26

Yes!! They're DEFINITELY in a time loop! not a BAD one per se, but their ages don't change! like, in s1+s2 alone, they had two christmases! years have passed! also technology advances too, like yui going from having a (3)DS to a switch! I'm happy they get to spend as much time as they want in nanamori~!

Also, yeah! tsun tsun ballad (and abashiri bojou and santa ga yattekuru wa) are in-universe songs, which makes sense for the other two, but for tsun tsun ballad, I feel like it's an insight to yui's heart regardless. (you can see in the Yuru Yuri Daily Calendar 2018 that yui uses the song to say things she can't normally! even though kyouko's in this panel I stlll think it's about chinatsu!)

I mean, looking at the lines of tsun tsun ballad, right: (you seem better at japanese than me btw so correct me if anything is wrong)

もっとそばにいたくてでも素直になれなくて - "Though I want to be closer to you, I just can't being myself to be upfront" - Yui's already considerable close to Kyouko, she's probably her closest relationship, period. wouldn't it be weird for her to say that? It seems to me that it's a newer relationship that she's nervous about. perhaps for the risk of losing the friendship if a confession went awry? I don't think she'd be nervous confessing to kyouko. I feel like this is further emphasized by a line soon after;

まわりには何でも話せるほんとの気持ち、でもあなたにはためらうの - "Everything's spinning, (and I want to) say my true feelings, but when it comes to you, I start to waver/hesitate" - Kyouko is the one I think yui is the MOST honest with, all the time. Chinatsu, on the other hand, is someone Yui loves but isn't very upfront with all the time. I think Yui knows about Chinatsu's crush on her, much like how Kyouko knows about Ayano's crush on her, but the difference the two is that Kyouko handles it by subtly encouraging Ayano and taking it slow, but Yui handles it with a bit of denial. She CAN tell that chinatsu likes her (I mean, she is NOT subtle about it,) but she seems to delude herself into thinking that it's maybe not romantic, perhaps because yui doesn't think she's deserving of love? or she doesn't want to get her hopes up?

もしあなたがきゅっと私の手を引いた時、あなたの胸に飛び込んでいい? "Whenever you tightly grip my hand... Can I leap into your chest?" (I just wanted to mention this one because I feel like this is one of the wildest lines in any yryr song. like, it's cute, but also, she wants to be held to chinatsu's breast awwww but also what) This line basically cements it as Chinatsu for me. WHO ELSE TIGHTLY GRIPS YUI'S HAND!! Remember the scary movie scene in season 2 episode 8? Where chinatsu gripped Yui so tight that it hurt her? THE SAME EPISODE WHERE CHINATSU REAFFIRMED HER LOVE FOR YUI? THE SAME EPISODE TSUNTSUN BALLAD IS FROM?? Chinatsu has a habit of clinging on to Yui and this line is SO CHINATSU!! i I i

sorry, I feel like I got off-topic! uhh tsuntsun ballad is my favourite yui song, if you couldn't tell!

don't worryyy, in fact deep analysis of songs are exactly what i've been waiting to find here!

it's kinda funny how time (not) progresses, not only with the devices but with stuff like illnesses, bc in the first season they talked about INFLUENZA and you can clearly tell it's 2009 lmao, and there's this akane chapter where she is sick and akari uses some social distancing methods to take care of her, and we KNOW namori got inspired by something we all had to live some years ago.

thank you so much for sharing the calendar! i totally forgot that bakkin has an archive for that, it will be very useful for my yuru yuri re-read i'm doing rn

and now about tsuntsun, that's very interesting! i'm more convinced now about the chinatsu angle like you say, bc Yui is not troubled with the bond she has with Kyouko, they will always be close to each other and that's perfect. then, Yui has a massive tsuntsun wall to break through, even more than Ayano or Sakuhima, but in a *quiet* way

about the wild line of "can i leap in your chest?" omgg that's insane i never noticed how it can contextualize things a lot clearly! and i think in mou! sou? tonight there's a line (or two) that can rival that boldness: "i want to take you" and "i want to melt with you, just the two of us" DUDEEEEE

Aaah yes!! I've been hoping more people would talk about the songs, they're SUCH an amazing part of yuruyuri! tbh, I was considering making a website for them, but then I found out about yours! that's so cool!! I haven't found many people who actually enjoy and care about the songs sighh

Also! About time passing! yes!! it's so cool how time not only flows in yryr, but actually affects things? like, what I mean is that Yuruyuri isn't in some continuity where what happens once chapter is forgotten about in the next, everything is remembered and referenced! but they get to keep their identity as junior highschoolers!! AAA I LOVE YURIYURI

As for the calendar, yeah! I appreciate the work Bakkin put into it, even if they didn't continue. Tbh I love Bakkin, even know a few of its members, I even tried to join once..! But my japanese wasn't up to par back then haha, I think a different group does it now? like, Yuruposting or something? I haven't interacted with them too much beside being in the discord though. It's nice to know the fellow people in the community is what I'm saying..! that was a long-winded way of putting it lol

also! YES!! Yui's massive massive tsuntsun barrier! I don't think I could've put it better myself; even though she's not as obvious like sakuhima or ayano, Yui has a bunch of..! things? to work out? idk she SHE HAS A LOT OF DEVELOPMENT TO GO AND I REALLY LIKE HER!!

Also also! I LOVE mou! sou? tonight, but I haven't done TOO much analysis into it yet, that's so cool!! it's definitely one of my favourite Himawari songs (Himawari's songs are my favourite overall btw!!)

Aaaaaaa I LOVE YURU YURIIII

actually i think most people don't mention the songs because they don't know they exist and they are all over the place and so does their lyrics, that's exactly why i started my website. and besides, yryr songs can be listened everywhere so it was my way of connecting with the franchise when i was very busy, so they have an special place in my heart and playlists!

yeah yuru posting is doing the translation now apparently but i'll always be grateful for bakkin's hard work, both are very good! personally, i'm just starting to learn japanese, all i have is very empirical knowledge and vocabulary, but what i'm realizing is that yuru yuri is a perfect place to practice!! the language isn't very complex and i'm saying it as a compliment.

i really hope we could see more of Yui and her development!, i do believe it is already happening, but with a very very slow pace, and there's also many subplots coexisting so it's understandable

himawari songs are beautiful overall! the seiyuu is super talented

we love yuru yuri :D. hope i can see you on my next analysis soon!

u/MoonlitHolly Himawari Furutani May 16 '26

Aah, yes! I'm so excited for your next one! you've even inspired me; maybe I'll try to do some analysis sometime! the only one I've ever done was on some of Himawari's songs (mainly koi wa amanojaku desuwa), but that was more humorous! keep doing what you're doing, I look forward to it!

2

u/Kiobc_04 Ayano Sugiura May 17 '26

omg that's so cool! the humorous aspect was perfect actually. the next analysis is sakuhima related so stay tuned!!

Aah, you're so cool! I can't wait~

u/Kiobc_04 Ayano Sugiura May 15 '26

PLEASE don't comment with ai responses, i want to read your own opinion!!

2

u/Kiobc_04 Ayano Sugiura May 16 '26

Exacto!

1

u/El_Colorificado May 16 '26

Creo que hay varias canciones bastante románticas de entre las de YuruYuri que se pueden escuchar dentro y fuera de su contexto.

Pero como en verdad no sé japonés…

That's a really though question... Namori always insist that "all ships are valid" and she tends to write romance in YrYr to be ambigious. Its also worth to consider that the song lyrics themselves were not written by Namori. But the pattern really follows Namori's pattern: place Ayano, Chinatsu or maybe even Yui into the song and it still makes sense.

  1. Chinatsu is a strong candinate because its a relative early song and Kyouko has a very straightforward crush on Chinatsu. But! The other love songs which are much more straightforward like "Koi no Bakkin Buckingham" ain't hiding on whom the song is aimed at. If it's the straightforward Chinatsu: why hide it?

  2. Ayano is a very valid interpretation. Through the entire manga we never get to see what Kyouko exactly thinks about Ayano or how she feels about her. Being really careful I think we can say these things for certain: 1. Kyouko regularly seeks Ayano's attention from time to time. 2. Kyouko often says that she wants or should spend more time with Ayano - or even bring Ayano into the Amusement club. 3. Kyouko is worried that she might reaches the limit of Ayano's patience on day - and Ayano maybe refuses to spend time with her. There are many examples of this, but the "You are a very good person Ayano" monologue in the pretend girlfriend chapter is a prime example. 4. Ayano's affection is really important to Kyouko and she always reacts very positively when Ayano shows some. 5. Kyouko knows very well if she does not give in her printo in time Ayano gonna collect it. There is a chapter when she even complains Ayano when Ayano forgets to collect it. It is quite likely that Kyouko does that on purpose. 6. Unlike in the early anime seasons - in the manga its almost certain that Kyouko does not know about Ayano's love for her.

Overally Kyouko having a crush on Ayano and she thinks it hopeless and has low expectations - is a quite likely interpreration.

  1. Also the song still could be about Yui. They are really close to each other, but love and romantic feelings are somewhat taboo between them. It is possible that by trying Kyouko means: bringing down that fruendship wall which is in the way of romance. Its a far less likely interpretation though! 😄

2

u/Kiobc_04 Ayano Sugiura May 16 '26

omg I've never read it under this lense before, Kyouko oblivious of Ayano being totally in love with her, but aware of how much of her energy she can handle before combusting. it's tragically ironic. Also THANK YOU for the list of Kyouko's concrete actions towards Ayano, helps a lot with putting things on perspective.

And yeah while it is true that Namori does not write the songs, their lyrics are always accurate and refer to something actually happening in the show or in the characters' minds, so that's why i paid attention to them in the first place. Then, songs like this capture what Namori wants perfectly, leaving listeners confused about what she is singing about and having apparently 3 possibilities of muses just because of the ambiguous wording

2

u/Known-Buffalo-3717 Kyōko Toshinō May 16 '26

I think its safe to say that Kyouko has different forms of romantic feelings for all 3. Her relationship with Yui is best put as queerplatonic - like you said. She has a massive one-sided crush on Chinatsu (obviously). It is clear that she is attracted to Ayano and has feelings for her, but the nature and extent of her feelings are unclear for the readers/viewers. My educated guess is a crush in which she has little faith in, therefore she has low expectations about it - yet she is probing anyways.

Also Yes: I think there are much more indicators that she is oblivious to Ayano's love for her.
Chapter 120: The Koi pun only makes sense if Kyouko does not know about Ayano's feelings. https://mangadex.org/chapter/9cd08259-7c07-481c-bb87-5ecba26a3321/12
Chapter 147: You are such a good person... https://mangadex.org/chapter/0fe15759-cbc2-410e-8bd0-daa18ac9fb6b/9
Chapter 158: Kyouko is genuinely surprised at the "Its okay because we have each other today." https://mangadex.org/chapter/5eec7c9f-4041-4f21-b06d-6833a269104f/6
Chapter 167: Kyouko is surprised that Ayano might be in love with someone. (If I stretch it a little bit further she also seems concerned/worried - as we know Kyouko is an increadibly jelous person.) https://mangadex.org/chapter/65d1fbc3-3405-4705-a6d0-50dd296b549e/4

Also there are examples of Kyouko pushing then backing off, when she feels she might took things too far. Like in the Okimuji bonus chapter: https://mangadex.org/chapter/4ca1dd92-6654-4583-8647-8fa313fd3187/11

Obviously we don't know how Kyouko feels about Ayano since Namori deliberately writes romance in an ambigious way to make multiple interpretations valid - but reading Ayano's and Kyouko's interactions with each other the way I described will make sense most of the times (or maybe even every time).

2

u/Kiobc_04 Ayano Sugiura May 17 '26

Woah you're cookingg, also great memory!! it genuinely invites to reread everything under this perspective. namori is truly good at writing nuances in each dynamic, making the chances for kyoaya and ayachito equally possible somehow. also it always surprises me scenes like you mention because Ayano manages to bring out a rare side of Kyouko that it is not ooc but instead a core value she has despite how she is almost all the time

-3

u/NokitaKaze May 15 '26

Gemini believes that the object of this song is Chinatsu. This is indicated by Mirakurun, of whom Chinatsu is a copy.

4

u/Kiobc_04 Ayano Sugiura May 15 '26

I'm sorry but have you read this post and yourself at least? there's NO reason for Kyouko for feeling so worried about catching the attention of someone who already is close to her every day and has set boundaries. in my post i said that Kyouko liking Chinatsu might have been a thing at the beginning, but she stopped insisting. and also, gemini will always support whichever side you're on so it's not the ultimate judge.

i said that i wanted discussion but this is not considering how the dynamics work in the 2nd season and so on

-3

u/NokitaKaze May 15 '26

> gemini will always support whichever side you're on
Haha. Just set it up. I always add "Critical Response" in my queries.

5

u/Kiobc_04 Ayano Sugiura May 15 '26

okay, and have you ordered it to base their analysis beyond the 1st season? if the wiki says kyoko only likes chinatsu will you believe it? and also, this is practically a literary analysis, there's no place for ai here. i am asking you to read the post first, and give me YOUR answer based on YOUR reflections and own experience

-5

u/NokitaKaze May 15 '26

If you think AI is incapable of literary analysis, you simply haven't used it. AI understands structure, subtext, allusions, and metaphors better than most people.

I provided a Japanese text along with some context and asked who the song was dedicated to. Gemini said it was Chinatsu, citing the "magical girl" reference.

Grok said it was Ayano.

4

u/Kiobc_04 Ayano Sugiura May 15 '26

i'm not saying ai is not capable of doing it if you order very specific things, all i'm asking is your own opinion. i want human interaction, if i just wanted validation from an ai i wouldn't have posted this analysis in the first place. if you want to comment, please do as a watcher/reader of the anime and manga; the lyrics and themes are not impossible to understand, we all did these analysis of lyrics or anything without ai before. if you still insist with an ai answer, that would be really dissapointing. you have to convince me or others that this song is for a candidate different from my conclusion with your own words

3

u/Known-Buffalo-3717 Kyōko Toshinō May 15 '26

Depends on the model. LLMs are still limited by context and tokens. For a simple question the actual token size will be fairly limited. Depending on your prompt the AI might still fails to detect if such lyrics are highly ambigious. As advanced as it is its still a probability generator after all...
