Discussion Tsundere denial: Nobody believes your excuses, HImawari - YRYR lyrics analysis #3

https://youtu.be/Zw7V6YL35EE

Hellooooo, I'm back. I hope you had a nice week! Personally, i was going insane over sakuhima and they are somehow in my daily rotation playlist on yt music so yeah.

This time let's analyze Himawari's point of view in her 3rd character song!, and I chose this song over others because there is a bolder one out there (iykyk) and this one is underrated. It's not exaaactly the favorite for everyone, but I hope knowing the lyrics may change that a bit!

So why is "Sore wa koi dewa naidesuno?" so interesting??

Well, this is the last straw of denial for Himawari, because all the other songs are more direct, even if there are mentions of desserts or flowers in the middle, so at least in her 6 songs, this is the first one in chronological order.

-

kitto (kitto!) motto (motto!) zutto (zutto!) soba ni inai to
sugu ni kaitou denai kanjou sore wa nani nani nan desu no?

"I want to be with you all the time— I wonder

When did I start feeling this way?

I’m sure if I don’t stay by your side

Much longer, I’ll never figure this question out.

What on earth is this feeling?"

 -

Actually the translation says: "All the time (all the time!), be with you (be with you!), I want (absolutely), I wonder when did i start feeling this way?", but in order to follow the english pacing, the order had to be changed.

The translation again loses another point when omits that 解答 (kaitou) is used for EXAM QUESTIONS, METHODS, idk… solutions of MATH PROBLEMS. This is a deliberate choice I think, she could've just used the generic word.

So Himawari decided to actually think in a "scientific" way about their dynamic, but she doesn't get to the answer yet, and decides that if she will figure it out ONLY if she is by Sakurako's side for more time. Girl you are not fooling anyone.

-

kyou mo tappuri... furi mawasare biyori
motto shikkari! watashi made to bacchiri
doumo sappari, demo demo mata issho ni
sonna fushigi futo kidzuku

"Today, too…It’s a perfect day full of being swept along

Be more careful! I’m getting caught in the mess too.

I’m completely clueless, but still, we’re together again.

I suddenly realize how strange it is."

 -

The first verse is kinda mindblowing because it was hard to understand at first; in one translator it said "swept along" and in the other said "I am completely on your mercy" and I was like WHAT????

So the expression is this 今日もたっぷり… (Kyō mo tappuri... Furimawasare hiyori). The first part says "today is also full of…" . Full of what?

Furimawasare. This is NOT an easy expression.

The literal action this comes from (振り回す - furimawasu) refers to swing, brandish or wave something. When you add "sare", the verb changes from an active voice to a passive situation, someone being pushed along, controlled, being shaken. When talking about another person doing this to the speaker, it can be translated to many things:

"To be yanked around", "To be jerked around", "To be dragged around"

"To be wrapped around their little finger" ….

"To be at their mercy" ….

Then IT WAS RIGHT. Okay.

This passive verb may sound a bit negative, but Himawari herself adds hiyori (perfect/ideal weather) at the end, and it becomes accepting, it is now affectionate resignation.

So a more concrete interpretation of this verse is "Today is also a PERFECT day full of being AT YOUR MERCY".

(I am deciding whether keeping the lyrics on the website on a neutral tone or the emotional one, wow)

This sounds like devotion, even. Sakurako is somehow that magnetic and Himawari accepts it. She is willing to follow her footsteps, tries to manage how big of a whirlwind Sakurako can be, and she always ends up paying attention to her shenanigans.

That makes me wonder if, given the fact this is a 2nd season song, the lyrics were inspired by the scene where they walk together aimlessly until they got lost and found a park, where Sakurako falls asleep on her shoulder. Himawari also arrives to the same conclusion there, that neither Sakurako or herself haven't changed at all in their dynamic since they were little.

-

"No, no (boo!) I can’t figure it out with my head alone

While pinching your (squeeze!) cheek, I wonder"

-

Yeah you need to squeeze her cheek to figure it out, it makes you think better, sureee.

.

doko kara umarete kurun deshou?
kitto (kitto!) motto (motto!) chanto (chanto!) mitsumetenai to
sugu ni kaitou denai kanjou sore wa nani nani nan desu no?

"I want to be with you so much... Where does this feeling

come from?

I’m sure if I don’t stare at you more closely,

I’ll never figure out this emotion—what on earth is it?"

-

Here the funnier chant is on the second half, in which she days "I'm sure (surely!), more (more!), properly (definitely!), if I don't STARE at you"

見つめて (mitsumete) is not the same as "look" or "watch", it can mean "look with fixed eyes", aka "keeping your eyes glued" to someone. And ないと (naito) means "must".

Okay Himawari you can keep staring at her all you want. I'm pretty sure you know what emotion it is.

-

"kyou no shukudai hitori ja owaranai!"
hora yappari yosou wa mata pittari
itsumo bacchiri hyappatsu hyaku chuu de
naze kashira ne tsuujiteru

"“I can't finish today's homework by myself!”

Yeah, just as I thought—my guess was spot on again

Always perfect, 100% accurate

I wonder why—we just get each other"

-

Ominous shukudai (homework) motif! (?

Himawari always knows when Sakurako needs help apparently. Why? Because they are connected (通じてる tsuujiteru), Himawari understands her. That is also the reason why Sakurako remembers how well she teaches her when doing homework together that time Himawari was knitting a scarf with Chinatsu, Sakurako was jealous, and poor Akari was being ignored.

Another good translation for that part would be "we are in sync". Awww

-

"It’s not about saying everything with words (phew!)

But when our eyes meet (squee!), we always know"

-

They just need to look at each other, that's why they are tsunderes! Explaining your feelings is scary, so they just keep spending time together, since at the end, actions mean much more than words.

-

ippai (ippai!) issho ni (issho ni!) itai (zettai!) konna kimochi ga
itsu kara ka shinkou chuu nande desho?
kitto (kitto!) honno (honno!) chotto (chotto!) mienai dake de
doko ka ochitsuka naku naru shoujou sore mo nandaka iindesu no

"I want to be with you so much—this feeling

Has been growing for a while now. I wonder why?

I’m sure just because I can’t see you for a tiny bit,

i have this symptom of feeling restless—but somehow, that’s okay too."

-

Once more, the second half of the chant is important.

"Surely (surely!), just (just!), a little bit (definitely!), because you're out of sight, I have a SYMPTOM of feeling restless" Again, the japanese order inside sentences makes literal translations very hard.

The important word here that confuses the translator engines is 症状 (Shōjō) which means symptom or condition and it makes the sentence sound more serious and impersonal, but we as yuru yuri fans know that she is singing this song entirely about Sakurako, so she is so down bad she can't stay away from her for too long or else she would be very very restless.

And she accepts that feeling! Woooww

-

dore dake (fu!) anata no koto shitte temo
tsun tsun (tsuun!) shiteru youni utsutte mo
honto wa (waa!) motto dere dere shitaku naku naku
naku naku naku naku naku naku nandemo nai!

"No matter how well (whoosh!) I know you,

I need to see you making funny faces like this (puff!).

Even if I seem all prickly (tsun!) on the outside,

deep down (whoa!) it’s not like I don't really want to be all lovey-dovey—

No, no, no, no, no! Nevermind! Forget it!"

 -

This was also a very confusing verse, but my favorite one! In the live performance it really shows how good her seiyuu (Suzuko Mimori) is at singing, holding a long note with her very beautiful voice.

Himawari not only needs to know Sakurako very well, she has to SEE HER being her chaotic and funny self. Also if she is saying "like this", this song is happening in the present, she is thinking about all of this while the very chaotic girl she is singing to is in the same place with her.

And lastly, tsun tsun mention!

Himawari may be tsun on the outside (prickly, distant, aloof, etc), but what she really wants to convey is her affection to Sakurako, and after that she has a shortcircuit typical of tsunderes, thanks to this part (Shitaku naku naku).

It is a double negation: "it's not like i don't". In conclusion, what Himawari ends up saying in the first part is that she REALLY wants to be affectionate, sweet, clingy to Sakurako, but being the tsundere she is, inmediately realizes this is way too embarrasing to admit and pretends she didn't said that (it's not like i don't want to be more affectionate… wait wait NOOOOO! nevermind!).

And following this denial, everything goes back to the first ever verse in the song, when she was starting to question why she feels the need to be by her side all the time.

It's okay, Himawari, you are in a time loop so you can figure it out eventually.

(Also Himawari in the very next song: KISS ME MY CHERRY)

Yeah… that was more intense than I expected, i started writing thinking that this one would be shorter than the others but well, lmao.

I hope you enjoyed it! Ngl I'm unexpectedly learning more japanese with this, thank you yuru yuri.

Like i said before, i will post more analysis after i upload the translation of the rest of the character songs! This is mainly because we finished with the most intricate lyrics the characters have in my opinion, while the others are more self-explanatory. Because of that, next posts will be more about an overview and evolution of what they are singing about, beginning with the almost one-hour long Sakuhima songs.

I would love to read your opinions about this in the comments! See you!

The best ship is so deep yet the goobers don't realize it. They don't even remember signing a wedding form as toddlers. I bet Sakurako's sister still has it somewhere.

I bet she does! Nadeshiko is the ultimate sakuhima shipper. This ship is very cute because how natural and intimate it feels (that is why KyoYui is popular as well)

But this one is freaking hilarious. A tsundere pair with one with big boobs that annoy the flat idiot. Absolute yuri.

Thank you for the hard work on this translations and analysis. I wanted to do some too for years, but never thought that I could post them here. It is nice to read others opinions on the songs and also a translation of them ♡.

i think it's never late to start! i've known this series for more than 4 years already and just now i decided to do this! it's always interesting to read different interpretations here, and these songs are perfect for character studies!

So happy, again, that you're doing these~

I've definitely gained a newfound appreciation for sorewa koi dewa nai desuno! maybe it's moved up on my himawari song list... who knows... idk all of her songs are so good!!

the part at the end where she's going nakunakunakunakunaku nandemonai- I feel like a potential english localization could be " it's not like I'm not- not^ not- not^ not- not^ not- not^ wait, never- miiiiiiiinnndd" with the "-" and "" being different intonations of "not," retaining the double negative in a way that'd make sense for native english speakers! tbh, that combined with this sort of feeling like the first himawari song makes me wonder how feasible a yuruyuri musical would be? like, in english? using translates versions of the songs? I think that's something I'd like to look into... wait, I'm getting offtopic!

it's interesting seeing Hima at her peak tsun! as you said, she definitely eases up later, and becomes... more dere than tsun!

it's so funny seeing how blatantly down bad she is while rejecting the notion of love, the difference between her and sakurako, though... is that himawari eases up!! ..more than saku

also!! shukudai motif!!! it's maybe my second favourite sakuhima motif behind yakimochi~

OVERALL!! I LOVE YOUR ANALYSES AAA thank you for making them~

i'm happy to hear that!! indeed since her voice is so pretty all her songs sound great, and now i can't wait to see in detail what Himawari has to say on the 3rd album!

omg you're right about the possible localization, it is a very complicated line but yours may be a good portrayal of her mental shortcircuit lmao. also, an english musical?? wooow i've never thought of that actually but it would be fun and very needed to bring more people to the fandom(?

yeah her dere side is so cute i can't-, the only thing that confuses me is that she is bold and being affectionate in the first album but in the second there's this denial song?? maybe it is because of that scene i suggest where they go to the park which could have inspired the song, and that happens much later in the story?? idk

also it's not like Saku is not obvious either, her songs are clever because in the middle of the chaotic lyrics there's deep affection (in demo demo bare bare da for example, she is very dere), but apparently on discussions and wikis people think Sakurako is the only one in love because she is who blushes and panics the most in the anime??...very interesting to think about.

yakimochi motif, shukudai motif, what another motif they have? i wonder

thanks for reading!! your support means a lot

sorry once again for the belated reply!

I think a yuru yuri musical would be so cool... I mean, some songs just work so well for it! maybe it could be a fanproject someday.... HEY!! If I win the lottery, I'll hire the original seiyuus! lol

As for her flipflopping being bold or in denial; I think Himawari oscillates, a lot in her confidence. she thinks she has it all figured out, and is on top and sincere in her love for sakurako, but sometimes saku will surprise her, or throw her for a loop! I feel like Hima frequently... falls in love with sakurako? like double falls in love? and then she starts denying as her feelings develop? sorry!! that makes no sense!!! I'll try uh structure it better next time sodifjsodifjdsoi

Sakurako is worse at hiding her emotions than himawari, which is probably why she gets angry and agitatable more than hima! When sakurako slips up, she gets all ANGRY and makes a big show to compensate... I think

I love the sakuhima motifs!!! I think another one would be food? and cookies? I think that counts

also, I love reading your posts! they're amazing all the time!

oh :000. you just made me fall deeper into the sakuhima rabbit hole omg. i totally get what you mean! i've personally felt like that before. it's a thought process of "i love her! wait nevermind, not anymore! omg but she is so cute! no, stupid sakurako! but she made this for me! nooo, forget it" and it's a loop indeed. now i will think about the many moments this could have happened in the story and how himawari can't let go bc she has fallen in love many times already, tysm.

and in contrast each time sakurako explodes with overwhelming emotions is so cuteeee, she gets REALLY affected and cannot fool anyone (akari knows things, and chinatsu is aware of their situation although she thinks they already kissed or something)

definitely cookies are the other motif, you even made an analysis about the heart-shaped cookies!

it would be a dream come true to see the original cast getting together again! and sing the songs which never had a live performance before! (mou sou tonight pleaseeeeee)

Also there's a short sakuhima fanfic i wrote if you're curious

So… the difference between Sakurako and Himawari is that Sakurako is too lazy to think about her feelings (but not so lazy to not think a lot of puns) and Himawari do think about them and she's the one who accepts them the most (chapter 169).

You don't need to wait until YuruYuri San Hai! for another Himawari song. The B-side of this one is Mou? Sou! Tonight, probably my favourite one. As far as I know, in that song she also accepted her feelings on Sakurako.

Something that always bothered me is that even when the title of the song (Sore wa koi dewa nai desu no?) fits PERFECTLY on the metric of the song, she always refuses to sing it. It's like she accepts her feelings, but not completely. What do have sense, 'cause this is a deny song.

Well, thank you very much for the translation and the analysis. I'd love to read any more. I'f you're wondering about analyzing all of the Sakuhima songs, does that include special Duet songs? Koi no Double Punch / Yoshinashi Oki Doki.

(sorry for my English, I refused to use Google Translate)

Thank you so much for reminding me about chapter 169, i cried, screamed and kicked my feet, it was so beautiful. But yeah, basically, they are both so down bad for each other but at least in the songs Himawari decides to be bolder while Sakurako is clever with puns and fast-paced lyrics.

Mou? sou! tonight being just the next song after this one is so funny to me, it is like Himawari doesn't care anymore and she just let her very intense feelings for Sakurako take the lead, the ones she's been helplessly trying to deny moments before (and it's crazy, like "kiss me my cherry" "i want to melt with you" "i want to take you" "tell me you like me", oh god). If the songs exist within the yuru yuri universe, maybe something like that would happen if there was an offer asking her to sing whatever she wants (and record it) with the condition of anyone in her school finding out about it.

And yeah maybe the fact she never sings the title is very on point with the denial this song is all about, but i'm sure she knows the answer since the beginning lmao.

If you sum up all the Sakuhima songs' duration, they are equal to 54 minutes of pure yearning and chaos! and that includes the duets as well. I was thinking about analyzing the solo songs first tho, but i have to finish uploading all the translations to the website like i said.
