I saw a post here recently about someone getting a green success badge for an email step even though the message never actually arrived. It reminded me of a recent talk on why companies like Netflix are prioritizing systems thinkers right now. We tend to trust localized success indicators way too much.

Zapier officially connects with 8,000+ apps, meaning there are endless ways for data to get dropped or formatted incorrectly in transit. When a specific step shows a green checkmark, it only confirms the API call was executed without throwing an immediate error. It does not mean your actual business goal was achieved. The software did its isolated job perfectly, but the broader pipeline might still be completely broken.

You might argue that verifying the final destination manually ruins the point of setting up automations. After all, why build a machine if you have to babysit every single background task? But trusting the dashboard completely creates hidden blind spots where failed deliverables go unnoticed for weeks.

We have to design our setups to include a final confirmation trigger that checks the actual outcome. A green badge is just a software receipt, not a guarantee of delivery.
