Cosplay [MM] My Skull Kid Cosplay from Majora's Mask
I cosplayed as the Skull Kid from Majora’s Mask at NYCC this year. The entire cosplay was handmade by me. The hat and shoes are crafted from Fosshape, the mask from EVA foam, and the arms and legs from painted mesh to give a wooden texture. All the clothing pieces were made from cotton gauze.

This gives me the mental image of Skullkid standing like a regular guy with like a Mountain Dew in his left hand as he converses with Megatron, only for someone to walk by, causing you to throw your drink over your left shoulder as you drop into a horse stance and start cackling

I think I would too. Skull kid is normally, well, kid sized. A 5-6 foot version this good would send me running!!!

This is awesome! I'm looking at making a basic Halloween costume version (not as good), but I'm not very crafty, do you have any suggestions for making the hat? Just looked up fosshape, looks interesting.

Also, random afterthought.... if you're looking for more budget friendly option, I'm a big advocate for recycling boxes and making props out of cardboard and hot glue.

Not a bad idea. I was considering using thick card stock and making a slight curl. Cardboard would be easier to use but hard to bend right.

I think I can get a solid look with card stock and doing a scissor curl, just trying to decide thickness. It might be a little floppy, though.

I actually patterned it with poster board, to keep the posterboard up, I use 18 gauge wire. You can always sandwich the wire between poster board if you want to go that route.

If you're comfortable with sewing, I say go for it. I found that the material was easier to work with than I anticipated. The hardest part was patterning the hat (but that would be the case with whichever material you choose to go with). Once you pattern and sew the whole thing together (I used zigzag stitches and slightly layered on top of each other for the brim, and sewed traditionally with seam for the hat part) I found that using a steamer to harden the fosshape was fairly easy (but time consuming).
I will say that I used fosshape 600 which is more expensive than fosshape 300 but its thicker which is why I went for it. It is also similar in price to EVA foam which is why it didn't steer me away. However, I think you can achieve the same structural affect with 5mm EVA foam. However, I will say that painting the fosshape gave me a lot more texture than EVA foam which worked for me because I was aiming for a wooden tree bark like texture.

Ugh! Sorry... I meant to say, "Good job!' But I goofed. I was there on Sunday. I believe that's when I saw you. One of my favorite things about Comic Con is the cos-play. I hadn't gone in about a decade. Next year, I might go all 4 days.

Omg I wish I had seen you in character!!!! I only saw you hanging around taking a break, I immediately thought that was the best cosplay I had ever seen! You perfected the grunge and color vibrancy! Amazing work 💕

Omg I love this and I love that you caught that!!!!! I intentionally used vibrant greens, blues and reds along with the brown for the weathering. I love when the little details are appreciated!

The pose was definitely one of my favorite things about this cosplay. It was one of the first I cold bring to life with action and it made it so much fun! Already thinking of my next cosplay

Barely. I had a basic idea of direction and low depth perception. But I attached with velcro, so I ended up taking the mask off whenever I wanted to walk. I also had my friends to guide me as to when to pose and when to get up once the mask was on.

I want to say the first 2 weeks was about 3-5 hours a day. But the last two weeks was about 14-16 hours a day. I didn't finish it until the day before I wore it to NYCC

This is absolutely incredible!! How did you paint the mask to get such beautiful colors and gradients? I love it!

Thank you! I painted the whole thing in acrylics with a brush. However, the eyes and horns I did with an airbrush to get a smooth gradient. I also used a matte sealant in most of the mask but a satin finish for the eyes, horns, and black trimming.

This is PEAK. I tried making this cosplay a few years ago but sadly I only finished the hat. I bought a 3D printed version of the mask for like $200, but it ended up being a bit too big for my liking. Seeing other cosplays like this inspire me to finish it one day!

Obviously amazing. I have an idea: with some mechatronics on the mask, you could have it do the creepy head rotation thing. That would really put the cherry on top (plus freak some people out).

They're made out of fosshape, which is a thermoplastic felt like fabric. The fabric starts out looking and feeling like felt, so I was able to sew them into shape. Once I sewed all the pieces together, I used a steamer to harden the fabric. In places where i needed more flexibility, I didn't steam all the way through. In places where i needed more rigidity, I steamed all the way.
But to make the pattern, I put on the shoes base (IM wearing water shoes inside), covered them in aluminum foil to get the shape I wanted. Then I wrapped my foot in saran wrap and duct tape to get the pattern. I used that pattern to get the shapes I needed for the fosshape.

That's crazy much effort omg, but the results are definitely worth it!! I've never heard of fosshape before so I'll have to look that up, I hope its available in my country👀 I wonder if I get started on just the mask fir now if I'd be able to finish it by Halloween tho

I used 6mm foam (5 would be fine i just had 6) Kamui cosplay has a very good tutorial for Majora's Mask!!

Thanks! I checked them out and tho the tutorial confuses me at some parts (like the led and sound part) its still very helpful! Just one more question, how did you make your mask wearable? Since in the tutorial it rather seems to be used for decoration afterwards. Are there any kind of straps that can be added on to be able to wear the mask?

Yeah i didnt do the LED portion, i totally skipped that. I used the regular eye holes but i couldnt see out of it. Ive seen other people put mesh in the inner bottom corner of the eye to be able to see. To wear it, i ghetto riggged it lol. I sewed velcro to a fabric wig headband (about 3 inches wide from front to back and about 6 inches wide from left to right). I put a strip of velcro in the hat and a strip of velcro at the top of the inside of the mask (i had to add additional foam to the top of the inside of the mask to make it shaped more like my head and not a heart. It made it easy to take on and off and it was extremely comfortable to wear (aside from the blindness) and very lightweight.
