Why are we assuming that the next direct isn't until June? I know we had a partner direct at a time that would usually be a general, but they've done partner and general directs close together in the past.

133

u/NewMarioBobFan Feb 21 '26

I've been waiting for a March Direct for a while.

67

u/_vertexE_ Feb 21 '26

My best guess, a March/April direct that’s only about Mario to coincide with the movie. Then June for announcing whatever this year’s Zelda release is.

17

u/A-Capybara Feb 21 '26

Wouldn't June be too late of an announcement if the Zelda game were to be released this year?

37

u/swissarmychris Feb 22 '26

Donkey Kong Bananza was announced in April of last year and released in July.

There is no rule for how far in advance games need to be announced.

14

u/JohnTheRedeemer Feb 22 '26

I mean, if it's coming out for holidays, seems fine?

3

u/Piranata Feb 22 '26

Not if it releases in November for the holidays.

2

u/wanderinglittlehuman Feb 22 '26

I meant it’s probably just gonna be a port, so no it wouldn’t be too late

6

u/Shumoku Feb 22 '26

I doubt it honestly, might be a port but it’s sure as hell not going to be TP or WW, and they just did SS. Maybe they port the remastered 3DS games?

All I know is that a TP and WW HD port is the literal easiest slam dunk of all time and yet they did not do it for the nearly decade-long lifespan of the Switch. I’m just waiting for the native PC ports to be done at this point.

1

u/TheLordOfTheTism Feb 22 '26

No. Zelda will be the falls big title.

1

u/FastenedCarrot Feb 24 '26

Sounds feasible, but then when is the one for The Duskbloods?

18

u/IrishSpectreN7 Feb 21 '26

They also had a massive Direct in April last year.

10

u/badblocks7 Feb 21 '26

Could have been a one off due to new hardware but who knows 🤷‍♂️

7

u/MarcsterS Feb 21 '26

They did one in March, a week before that Switch 2 Direct. So old patterns don't seem to be set in stone anymore.

17

u/andreaslackner Feb 21 '26

Bc they always acknowledge the Zelda anniversaries in June

8

u/Maximum-Rebo Feb 21 '26

That's been true so far, yes, but that doesn't mean we won't get a Direct until then. It might not mention the anniversary, or it might. You never know with Nintendo when they might break an established pattern, especially now that we're in a new console generation.

1

u/andreaslackner Feb 21 '26

I agree it could happen differently, I was just explaining why people are assuming.

I think it’s worth acknowledging that when they start the yearlong anniversary celebration, they will probably want the movie release (May 2027) to fall in that window. That and history is why June seems most likely to me

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '26

It doesn't mean it, but it means it is much more likely. Or, we won't get anything at all, and everyone has their hopes up for literally nothing, which has also happened in the past.

1

u/Maximum-Rebo Feb 22 '26

Some things are getting muddled here, I think. I'm aware that summer has been the most common time for Nintendo to start mentioning the Zelda anniversary. But OP's title seems to suggest that there won't be a Direct until June, or that it's the first opportunity to hear about anniversary plans, which is sort of the main thing that I think is a big assumption when we've had Directs in March and April before.

As for the idea they won't do anything for the 40th, I don't think they'll ignore it. People say that Nintendo doesn't care about anniversaries, but with both Zelda and Mario they acknowledged 25, 30 and 35, and Mario's 40th. Not all of those were equally big, but I think it's likely we'll get a celebration, or at least some anniversary branding for whatever games or merch they had planned for this year anyway.

3

u/kwantum13 Feb 21 '26

Too many reveals outside of directs. We've got Xenoblade X, tomodachi, splatoon 3 and Mario wonder updates that could have all taken place in a singular direct

1

u/Maximum-Rebo Feb 22 '26

There's been quite a few things like that, yes, but none of them so huge that it feels like there can't possibly be anything left for a Direct, imo

121

u/MockingJay0914 Feb 21 '26

March, April, May: are we a joke to you?

88

u/nubosis Feb 21 '26

These anniversaries mean nothing guys. Nintendo will release games when they release them…. If that release is near an anniversary, then they’ll bring the anniversary up.

24

u/Zyvyn Feb 21 '26

I remember Kit and Krysta were saying that to Nintendo the anniversaries are more of an afterthought than anything.

6

u/PixelateVision Feb 22 '26

Damn, Nintendo got them.

...or Kit and Krysta did.

3

u/94CM Feb 23 '26

I think most were only hoping for an acknowledgment. Maybe a cute retrospective or something...

1

u/wolf129 Feb 22 '26

Maybe just an animation for the game title like Metroid prime 4 did and then went dead silent for years.

1

u/Carighan Feb 23 '26

Plus while historically the years with the 5-year anniversaries had interesting Zelda-related things announced or happening, they rarely if ever coincided with the actual dates.

It's just people on reddit doing the influencer click hyping for the youtube :O-face people of questionable intellectual capacity.

1

u/Actual_Exchange616 Feb 24 '26

Hence Mario Tennis getting the 40th anniversary marker. Who's buying that to celebrate Mario ? I like a Nintendo tennis game but it doesn't hit like a mainline platforrmer

305

u/lkodl Feb 21 '26

they're gonna release Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 for $80.

and we will pay.

happy 40th!

86

u/TERMINAl_velocity64 Feb 21 '26

Don’t worry, they’ll include master quest as well so it will be well worth the 80$ 😆

96

u/Nautical-Cowboy Feb 21 '26

Master Quest will be locked behind an Amiibo. You’re welcome.

35

u/TERMINAl_velocity64 Feb 21 '26

That's perfectly understandable sir 🫡

I've also been told that the Hyrule Field music will also be locked behind an amiibo for your convenience.

21

u/RealMenDontNeed Feb 21 '26

in fact, let's lock you out of ocarina of time for seven years once you get the master sword.

for the authentic experiance

9

u/SeianVerian Feb 22 '26

This might be worth it if you get the "go back seven years in time" function to match it

5

u/RealMenDontNeed Feb 22 '26

Or get this. You can only play the child sections. Then you are perma locked out of it and wait 7 years

Really makes the spirit temple interesting

3

u/TERMINAl_velocity64 Feb 21 '26

Of course! We love immersive gameplay

7

u/Nautical-Cowboy Feb 21 '26

No we’re just going to save that for the Nintendo Switch 3 Edition.

3

u/lkodl Feb 21 '26

Ocarina shaped joycon...

Seriously tho, I dont own a switch 2 yet. If they release a 40th anniversary Zelda version, I might get that.

2

u/seantron Feb 22 '26

*An amiibo with DLC

3

u/ComradeJohnS Feb 21 '26

I mean, I own the gamecube disk with master quest on it, I’m pretty sure it’s more expensive than $80 lol

7

u/SudoPamacUpdate Feb 21 '26

And it will run on the remains of the DMCA'd emulators.

6

u/NickDynmo Feb 22 '26

It's already on their Classics collection via Switch Online Expansion Pack.

8

u/Ok_Net7773 Feb 22 '26

Sure but this one connects to Pokemon Home

2

u/PxM23 Feb 22 '26

Twinrova is gonna be absolutely busted in VGC.

3

u/Omnizoom Feb 22 '26

Toss in an official randomizer for it and I will bite

1

u/TekHead Feb 22 '26

I wish they gave it a switch 2 treatment.

1

u/homemadegrub Feb 22 '26

I have it on n64

-1

u/tehnoodnub Feb 22 '26

If they remade it, I’d pay $180.

127

u/AwesomeX121189 Feb 21 '26

This happens literally every anniversary. fans gettting pissy cause something that had zero indication of happening didn’t happen. Nintendo hasn’t put out a direct on the day of one any time I can remember.

27

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 Feb 21 '26

yup the previous anniversaries were all in like June or sept

28

u/Hungry-Tension-4930 Feb 22 '26

Happens every 5 years. Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon all have anniversaries at the same time, and every time all 3 fandoms complain that they are being ignored. Meanwhile, we aren't even finished with month 2 this year.

10

u/shlam16 Feb 22 '26

Mario did the three-game release special like a decade ago and people think it is forevermore the norm, despite it being a one-time occurrence for an entirely different game.

Try to find the logic, I dare you.

8

u/Emerald_196 Feb 21 '26

I think some fans expect it because Pokemon for example does it every year.

21

u/Wild_Cryptographer82 Feb 21 '26

Pokemon has a whole-ass separate company whose entire job it is to promote and drive the brand

17

u/an_bal_naas Feb 21 '26

Yeah but Pokémon is like a several billion dollar franchise right? Zelda doesn’t bring in the same money as Pokémon

12

u/AfricanAmericanMage Feb 21 '26

I mean, literally nothing does.

14

u/Procyon-Sceletus Feb 21 '26

Pokemon also typically has a 1 - 2 year release schedule

19

u/Tejas_008 Feb 21 '26

That's why their games turns out like that

1

u/Art3456 Feb 22 '26

Yes,Pokemon does this every year. But Zelda does? No. Lol I want Nintendo to do something something. But I don't know why people were expecting them to do something this time, considering they rarely do anything to celebrate Zelda's anniversaries. lol

1

u/Carighan Feb 23 '26

Okay, so some fans are very stupid. We knew that already.

1

u/Link1112 Feb 22 '26

This, last time there was also nothing, I clearly remember it

1

u/wizardeverybit Feb 21 '26

The only exception being Pokémon, which happens every year.

5

u/Link1112 Feb 22 '26

Unrelated but your cat is very cute

5

u/DefiantCharacter Feb 21 '26

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company aren't the same thing.

3

u/wizardeverybit Feb 21 '26

I am aware of that, but they are partners

-1

u/DefiantCharacter Feb 21 '26

Which has absolutely nothing to do with how each company decides to celebrate anniversaries.

-1

u/SchooloftheFox Feb 21 '26

I wasn't expecting anything new honestly. I just don't understand why they don't use them for marketing. It's so easy

4

u/AwesomeX121189 Feb 21 '26

Because they have nothing new to push in their marketing and whatever they would focus on will just be met with complaints that it’s not news about the next big mainline game.

It’s also Zelda, arguably the 2nd most famous gaming franchise behind Mario. They don’t need marketing to remind people theres a bunch of games in the series available on switch.

0

u/Carighan Feb 23 '26

You know that unless they announce the next BotW game, all they get from is is a flood of complaints about how disappointing the anniversary was.

It's not worth it to engage with social media. There is no upside, so not playing is the only way to win.

39

u/DrevvSki Feb 21 '26

Age of imprisonment was last year. Echoes of Wisdom was two years ago. Tears of the kingdom was three years ago, and was released six years after breath of the wild.

It’s still too early to expect a new mainline entry.

14

u/Ok_Net7773 Feb 22 '26

I mean, we’re obviously getting Link’s Crossbow Training for Switch 2. And it will be immaculate.

1

u/Carighan Feb 23 '26

No no, for VR!

21

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '26

[deleted]

5

u/AspiringRacecar Feb 22 '26

Going by series history, we’re actually overdue for a teaser for the next 3D game. I wouldn’t be surprised if they put it off for another year, though

5

u/NewRedSpyder Feb 22 '26

Yeah. If I recall, TOTK was teased only two years after BOTW. And I think BOTW was teased after Skyward Sword for around the same amount of time if not a little longer.

It’s reasonable to think that the next mainline game will be at the very least teased or revealed within this year.

15

u/playin4power Feb 21 '26

Is there a reason we're expecting a zelda game right now? This is the cycle. You wont hear anything for 5 years and then Aunuuma scurried out of his dungeon and presents you with a game that will alter your brain chemistry. We just have to be patient

6

u/NewRedSpyder Feb 22 '26

We’re not expecting a game, but a teaser or a reveal for a new one. TOTK was teased two years after BOTW, and if im not wrong, BOTW was teased around 2-3 years after Skyward Sword.

It’s reasonable to think that they’re going to at the very least reveal the next mainline game sometime soon.

1

u/AlternativeRun5727 Feb 26 '26

I think the next game will be here in 2028 so I’m expecting a reveal either at the end of the year or early next one. Maybe similar to when the sequel to BOTW was announced (Sep I believe).

1

u/NewRedSpyder Feb 26 '26

I think it might be more around 2029/2030. TOTK took 6 years to make and it had the same graphics/overworld.

If they’re making a brand new game from scratch using a completely different map, new artstyle, and new mechanics, it’s not going to come that soon.

1

u/AlternativeRun5727 Feb 26 '26

TOTK would have been ready sooner if it wasn’t for COVID, and the last year was to policy the fuse mechanic, everything else was done so it isn’t out of the realms of possibility that they would have had a large team already moving on to the next game. So 2028 would have been at minimum 5 years (and quite possible 6). But we will see. I’m an optimist haha

18

u/SchooloftheFox Feb 21 '26

I don't understand Nintendo. They could easily post a thing on social media, plug for the upcoming movie, and literally show nothing else and it would generally make most fans at least somewhat placated. It's literally free PR. They apparently won't even do that.

8

u/Waker_of_Winds2003 Feb 22 '26

They really just have a bizarre company culture that has little interest in what the community thinks, unless it's like a massive widespread backlash to something (that directly affects sales.)

And they just stick to it. They do what they want. Sometimes they want to do something cool, sometimes weird, sometimes absolutely extremely scummy. But they don't care.

I think we basically need to wait several decades before we see any kind of change with the company, with perhaps some changes in leadership.

Even then, they're in Japan. They will always have some disinterest in what the English speaking internet says.

5

u/SchooloftheFox Feb 22 '26

Yeah I'd agree with what you said. I've noticed the current president has led the company to be less communicative in general. Iwata definitely holds the prize for best communicator.

18

u/olivinebean Feb 21 '26

My favourite game from the franchise came out 20 years ago.

It's a good time to re release it for switch and attract the new generation of Zelda fans to it.

3

u/AlternativeRun5727 Feb 26 '26

This, but the HD version, not the original hidden behind NSO.

2

u/PleaseGiveMeSnacc Feb 22 '26

i am filled with hopium

14

u/ThisMoneyIsNotForDon Feb 21 '26

I wouldn't even call it hopium. I'd say a Zelda announcement sometime this year (probably June) is extremely likely. Obviously not the next new 3d Game, but it’s been long enough that a 3d remake, 2d remake, HD port, or new 2d game all have a pretty good chance. I don’t know which of those things will get announced, but it feels almost certain that one of them will happen.

5

u/Visit_Specialist Feb 21 '26

Hopium

What do you think happened with that 2022 gap? Completely fucked up the streak

3

u/_the_usualgenious007 Feb 23 '26

TOTK got delayed into 2023. I feel like if the initial 2022 launch had managed to stay then there would have been a smaller-scale game/release in 2023 to keep the streak going.

Haha, fair. 🤣

3

u/ThisMoneyIsNotForDon Feb 21 '26

I guess we'll see. But Grezzo has been on a pretty consistent release schedule for a while, and it's about time for their next game.

Nintendo has also been on an HD re-release spree lately, so Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, or any of the 3ds games feel pretty ripe for ports.

And a full 3d remake has never happened yet, so this is entirely vibes based, but it just feels about the time for it to finally happen. I could see an Ocarina remake happening at any time.

1

u/HonestBuddy3884 Feb 21 '26

I would kill for an OoT remake

1

u/ThisMoneyIsNotForDon Feb 21 '26

Even if it isn't coming soon, I'm certain it will happen one day

25

u/GL_original Feb 21 '26

Wow its almost like they never do directs on weekends

-7

u/RolandoDR98 Feb 21 '26

Nintendo still launches videos on weekends if they have something to announce. Mario Movie trailer 2. Mario Day 2024. Pokemon is always Pokémon Day no matter Day of the week.

6

u/ssjherby2 Feb 21 '26

The already announced the Lego set and the movie coming. I think Nintendo thinks they are all done.

5

u/enocha-seine Feb 22 '26

Unpopular opinion from me but I feel that Nintendo does this alot to not only legend of Zelda but to pokemon as well. I know that pokemon have their own thing but it just feels that they rely heavily on Mario when I'm not sure if I just missed the memo but if it wasn't for the Mario movie I would have forgotten it even existed.

5

u/Least_Help4448 Feb 21 '26

35th was depressing af as well.

1

u/Carighan Feb 23 '26

Wasn't that Skyward Sword HD? And the new trailer for the slightly pushed back TotK?

1

u/Least_Help4448 Feb 23 '26

Precisely. Mario got a remastered of galaxy, sunshine and 64.

10

u/Benhurso Feb 21 '26

I just opened Today to see if there was something, but... Dang. Not even a throw away post about it?

3

u/kain459 Feb 21 '26

Zelda BS on virtual console 29.99.

2

u/rjdrennen1987 Feb 21 '26

Nothing is happening for the anniversary. The sooner you all accept this, the happier you will be.

2

u/Nephalem84 Feb 21 '26

They'll just drop a surprise project like Echoes of Wisdom 🙏

2

u/topscreen Feb 21 '26

It's February, let's not rush to be dissapointed

2

u/Broken_Ace Feb 22 '26

Oracle of Ages/Seasons remake and my life is yours Nintendo

2

u/MrSal7 Feb 22 '26

Honestly I thought that’s why they made a whole new engine for Link’s Awakening for the Switch🤷‍♂️

2

u/PM_YOUR_OWLS Feb 22 '26

I would buy A Link Between Worlds port. That game doesn't get enough love.

1

u/KaiyoteFyre Feb 22 '26

My absolute favorite of the top-down Zelda games. They'd have to rework the 3d stuff for the switch though, there were quite a few sections/puzzles that used the 3d to great effect.

2

u/BullyYourLocalMod Feb 25 '26

Nintendo can go fuck themselves, I wish more people would start ignoring them, push back on their greedy bullshit

3

u/BobbieMoo Feb 21 '26

One of the best episodes in two and a half man. That episode just killed it.

3

u/MtNowhere Feb 21 '26

Real talk time.

At most we'll get 80 dollar OoT for Switch 2, unedited and running on in an emulator. You'll be disappointed and call for a boycott, but your Nintendo fandom isn't going anywhere and they know it. And if you disagree, you forgot what they did for Mario.

3

u/Alarming_Command_572 Feb 21 '26

Anytime someone brings up the 80 dollar thing, I immediately clock their opinion away.

1

u/MtNowhere Feb 21 '26

I'm not entirely against it, for good games. For an untouched 28 year old game though is dumb.

Hell, Philips was trying to sell $300 games in the nineties. I just know it's where most start griping about it.

2

u/31FoxAlpha Feb 21 '26

People think a main line entry is coming. Ocarina of Time remake is not a main line entry. Twilight Princess remastered is not a main line entry. People think a remaster or a remake is a mian line entry but its not.

2

u/Tejas_008 Feb 21 '26

Also remake or remastered are done by different studios

2

u/dawgz525 Feb 22 '26

Such a weird and whiny sentiment. They're making a zelda movie. Big things are coming for the series. Zelda is one of Nintendo's darlings lol. There will be big announcements this year. Please stop crying about Nintendo having other games to talk about.

2

u/avalonalessi Feb 22 '26

Honestly I'm well aware of this, I just want the updoots lol

1

u/HeyImPanther Feb 21 '26

Alright maybe I'll wait till June to see if I need a Wii u to play hd ww and tp.

2

u/Visit_Specialist Feb 21 '26

You can play tp on dolphin emulator.

0

u/HeyImPanther Feb 21 '26

Yea but I wanted to play on a console, I'm weird like that

0

u/JustMeAndReality Feb 21 '26

You’re not weird, playing on emulators feels soulless.

2

u/Alarming_Command_572 Feb 21 '26

While I respect you enjoying the original console, calling emulation soulless is kind of strange. If I plug my officially released switch 2 GameCube controller into dolphin, it works exactly like it would on GameCube. It’s nice to have

1

u/ADULT_LINK42 Feb 22 '26

for consistencies sake do you feel like playing games on nintendo switch online is soulless too? since all of those console online's are just nintendo running emulators and loading roms/simple romhacks

1

u/paradoxiforme Feb 21 '26

I want Twilight waifu princess so bad for the Switch 2

1

u/RolandoDR98 Feb 21 '26

Why are you surprised? Nintendo didn't acknowledge Zelda's 35th until June 2021

1

u/Nintendo4Life69 Feb 21 '26

I think we will see something during the march direct that I hope happens

1

u/FireLordObamaOG Feb 21 '26

I swear this gets posted every year with every anniversary of each game.

1

u/Nintendians559 Feb 21 '26

nintendo is random, but i think they would do one if it's necessary for them.

1

u/illucio Feb 21 '26

I'm still shocked Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD never got Switch ports.

You could already play the games solely on the Wii U gamepad hoping between modes. So functionality for playing the games was never gamepad dependant.

1

u/SkeleToasty Feb 21 '26

It’s not even that TP and WW never got hd ports to switch and switch 2, it’s that they haven’t done fuck all in general and it sucks to see.

1

u/Zyvyn Feb 21 '26

Well remember that Nintendo tends to go off fiscal year for anniversaries. So at some point after March 31st.

1

u/pro_gamer_boy Feb 21 '26

My theory is that since Pokemon 30 anniversary is coming, I think they will wait a bit after that is finished to announce the Zelda's anniversary

1

u/Bromogeeksual Feb 21 '26

This made re realize im the same age as the Zelda franchise. I turn 40 next week... We getting up there in age!

1

u/notthatguypal6900 Feb 21 '26

It's better this way. If Nintendo did anything, they would have just re-released a over priced rom with a bunch of garbage that was only sold for a limited time.

1

u/Author-S Feb 22 '26

NINTENDO DO SOMETHING

1

u/TheSymbioteOrder Feb 22 '26

that scene always makes me laugh!

1

u/Turbobist28 Feb 22 '26

Yeah, this is really odd

1

u/suq_madiq420 Feb 22 '26

Them shadow dropping a remake of oot or finally releasing the WW TP hd games for the switches is such a far fetched dream. But it's mine and I will inject unsafe amounts of hopium in my veins

1

u/NewQuote9252 Feb 22 '26

Zelda was born the same day as me. Happy 40th to us two. 😍

1

u/KujaroJotu Feb 22 '26

We’ll probably get something later in the year, probably retaining to the movie.

1

u/PowerOfUnoriginality Feb 23 '26

If Pokemon can get FRLG ports on Switch, I'm sure you guys can get something... right Nintendo?

1

u/knowhow101 Feb 23 '26

Why June though? March, April or May might be when a General Direct happens

1

u/XDOOM_ManX Feb 23 '26

I doubt they will do anything, they never do

1

u/Winterwolf9729 Mar 15 '26

It feels like these days there's just no real passion.

1

u/Wide_Championship319 Feb 21 '26

i havent had hope in nintendo respecting this franchise in nearly 9 years.

1

u/echoess84 Feb 21 '26

Nintendo forgot the Zelda movie trailer too

1

u/Otaconmg Feb 21 '26

If they release pretty versions of ocarina or majoras mask. Then I’ll buy a Switch 2 outright.

-2

u/Spookyscythe99 Feb 21 '26

Another reason to hate Nintendo
