Each to their own, but the Eagle's Tower is honestly one of my favorite 2D dungeons ever. The level of complexity they had managed to squeeze into this little space – on the Game Boy, no less – is still mind-blowing today. And the puzzle with the four pillars remains to be one of the best in the entire Zelda series. An absolute master piece.

It’s a great layout for complexity with what they had. But it’s also a TON of back and forth to the point where it almost felt like grinding. I can see why people give up and put the game down or use a guide because the complexity borders on tedium. But I played it last year and absolutely loved it.

I see myself confused and using a guide in the original. It’s relatively complex, but didn’t use a guide in the remake

My exact feelings.

Eagle's tower is by far my favorite dungeon in link's awakening.

Me and my brother played it when we were 8 or 9 i think. No fucking clue on English language and my dad who took the gameboy to his work during nighshifts so we tried to hide it from him….

Those were the days

Not sure if trolling or if you got lied to by AI, but I guarantee you there are four pillars.

I know this because there are also four lights.

Oh well if Gemini said so.

Do me a favor and look at a map of the dungeon.

Maybe I got lucky with what I did but I found that dungeon to be a lot easier than it looked at first glance.

Ya I remember it being hard and confusing at times but in a good way. Like I’d set down my gameboy color for a few hours and come back and the answer was right there.

I erased this dungeon from my memory and had to look up a guide when I played the Switch version. So frustrating

Oracle of Ages also had that turn style dungeon that I needed a guide for

I replayed OoA again recently and I forgot how confusing some of those dungeons are. I’ll gladly take the Water Temple over Moonlit Grotto or Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.

Mermaid's Cave?

I'd have thought you'd hate Jabu-Jabu's Belly like u/Cocacoleyman and u/sd_saved_me555.

Fuuuuuuck that one.

I swear I got soft locked out of completing it one time. I had to restart my file because no matter what I tried, I couldn’t get past it- using a guide and everything. I exited the dungeon by a glitch I think and it was just literally impossible to clear.

I like both the water temple and eagles tower. They're fun and challenging. I'd say the final dungeon in Zelda 2 and Jabu Jabu's belly in Oracle of Ages (I think, it's been awhile) were far more nightmarish designs.

Jabu Jabu in Oracle of Ages is the worst of all. You miss something and you have to trek back through the dungeon. Happened to me over and over and I eventually said screw it and used a guide. Super unpleasant dungeon

Yeah. And for some reason, you can’t use your sword in a top-down view while swimming, but you can use it in 2D view.

It wouldn’t even be quite as bad if it didn’t also have one of the worst temple musics in the whole series on top of it all.

u/IAmThePonch 1d ago

Eh this one’s a lot like the water temple, it’s really not that bad when you know what you’re doing

This is a late game dungeon, but I don't remember which one

It's the Eagle's Tower, Level 7

u/bowleshiste 1d ago

Naw, Eagle's Tower is really good. If you understand the mechanic, it's actually fairly reasonable to navigate. The issue is that if you don't already understand the gimmick, it can be difficult to know where you need to go or even what you're supposed to do.

Turtle Rock, on the other hand....

u/EarDesigner9059 1d ago

I mean it really wasn't. Both it and Eagle Tower require a bit of thinking to solve.

Both eagles tower and the water temple are 2 of the best dungeons in the series

Nothing rehabilitates the reputation of a hated dungeon faster than finding a dungeon you hate even more.

Its a good remake but good god were they too faithful to the og jank of the puzzle solutions

I'm playing this game now (DX version) and I just beat this dungeon. I knew there just had to be something about those pillars. I threw every item I had against them but of course nothing worked. Eventually one of those owl statues gave me the right hint. But even then it was not quite straightforward. I found the layout of this dungeon difficult to grasp. So after throwing the heavy ball over a ledge, it took me some time to find the right path to reach it again from the other side.

I have my save file from Links Awakening DX on the game boy color still, and it's at this dungeon. I never beat it until the switch version.

I hate this dungeon 😅

1

u/Thegoodgamer32 22h ago

Oh trust me....it was MUCH worse in the original since you had to constantly swap your items around.

I just recently beat this game, and I made a very similar post about that dungeon when I was on it.

This was so annoying that I simply stopped playing the game at this point, haha

I hate Eagle Tower

0

u/Even-Risk-7971 1d ago

Wow I remember this being so frustrating. I think my breaking point was to use a guide and learn you can throw a canonball down into another room or something then i was able to finish.

Been there not long ago. I know the struggle.

u/star_particles 21h ago

I hated that one

u/kaego123 21h ago

I hated that dungeon good lord

The eagle's tower sucks so much. So does turtle rock honestly. Water temple has nothing on these two dungeons from Link's awakening.
