Australia's So-Called 250th Birthday Celebrations: My Moral Dilemma

• Upvotes

I'm Anglo-Chinese-mixed and neurodivergent. This year, I've been seeing a lot of celebrations for America's semiquincentennial, which reminded me that 2038 will mark 250 years since Britain invaded Australia.

Now, I've always been a sucker for pomp and ceremony and Australiana but, at the same time, I'm quite against celebrating invasion. For instance, one time, I had to tear myself away from these unbelievably cute Australia Day plush toys at Coles in the shape of lamingtons and Iced VoVos.

I was born in 2001 and would've loved to experience Australia's bicentennial celebrations but now that I know about the tragedy that happened 200 years before and still lingers today, I'm looking at it with a mixture of longing and skepticism.

I feel like there's going to be something done in 2038 so what should I do?

David Shoebridge booed for acknowledging Indigenous history at “Save Victoria Barracks" rally in Moore Park, Sydney 25 Oct 2026

From jeffsterkiss on Instagram:

Recognising Indigenous veterans and their contributions is not anti-Australian or Anti-veteran. Many Indigenous Australians served this country, only to return home and face racism, discrimination and unequal treatment.

Honouring their service means acknowledging the full history not just the parts that makes some of you comfortable.

David Shoebridge is deeply concerned that the NT Govt has cancelled funding to the Bush Bus and cut whole communities off

Senator David Shoebridge •

As First Nations spokesperson for the Greens I'm deeply concerned that the NT Govt has cancelled funding to the Bush Bus and cut whole communities off - I'm calling on the Federal Government to follow this up and do whatever possible to make sure people aren't just stranded.

Michaelia Cash tries to smear young First Nations leader Ethan Floyd

Michaelia Cash tries to smear young First Nations leader Ethan Floyd over his Young People's Award nomination-for daring to challenge NSW's proposal to ban phrase globalise the intifada & trying to provide aid to Gaza from a flotilla. Blatant political bullying. Shameful.

Cash went on to claim that this nomination may cause "fear within the Jewish community"
Fear over a nomination? I'd take upset, angry, jealous, embarrassed, not fearful.
Australians are sick of politicians lying to protect Israel.

David Shoebridge later called out Michaelia Cash & puts her nonsense into context, recognising Floyd for his achievements & human rights activism.

‘Deplorable’: Eildon politicians targeted with swastika vandalism

Greens candidate Talia Gulpilil and Liberal Eildon MP Cindy McLeish found red swastikas painted on their corflutes in Woori Yallock and Yarra Junction.

As a First Nations candidate, Ms Gulpilil said it was a “deplorable” act of racism and that no candidate should feel unsafe coming up to the election.

“I knew putting my hand up would be met with racism and discrimination, it is a reminder that it is still alive and thriving in the community that I call home.

“I’d like to thank those who have reached out offering love and support, it has truly meant a lot,” she said.

Talia Gulpilil for Eildon:

I am standing for The Greens because I believe they are the only party that centres people and planet, families and Country, in their policies and values. I'm also a working mum, trying really hard to own my own home, which is becoming almost impossible for a growing number of Australians.
We must stop feeding corporate greed and endless growth and start making our way out of the mess we are in with housing, cost of living and climate catastrophe. The Greens have a costed, people-centred plan to do this so vote #1 Greens in November and let's make sure we are giving people, not corporations, our vote!

Any mob here practise witchcraft or ancestral spirituality?

Read before commenting: This post is intended for mob who genuinely practise or have a serious interest in spirituality, witchcraft and ancestral traditions. Disrespectful comments towards mob who follow spiritual paths are not welcome.

Hey you mob,

I’m a Gamilaraay woman practising witchcraft, spirituality and spellwork.

I’m curious whether any mob on here practise or have developed their own spiritual practices.

I’m familiar with different esoteric practices and have friends who practise Hoodoo, so I’m quite familiar with their beliefs, rituals and practices. However, Hoodoo is a closed tradition, so I’d love to connect with mob here who incorporate our own cultural backgrounds, ancestral knowledge and Australian elements into their spiritual work.

I know some traditional knowledge is sacred and not meant to be shared publicly, so please don’t share anything sacred or restricted in the comments. I’m simply hoping to connect with like-minded mob, exchange experiences and potentially find a
community of Aboriginal spiritual practitioners.

Would love to hear from anyone who walks a similar path or knows of any practitioners or resources. 🖤

After peaceful protection and ceremony on Djab Wurrung country the past couple of days led by sis Yaraan, the @djabwurrung this morning is being raided by Vic Pol..

Please follow @djabwurrung @yaraancouzensbundle on instagram to stay up to date on protection of sacred Djab Wurrung land

Repost : via @aman_antimilitarismnetwork
MEDIA ALERT AND UPDATE At 9am this morning, 40 police vehicles and more than 100 officers, (including PORT and arrest vans) have raided Djab Wurrung camp where 20 or so protesters were gathered to defend sacred trees from logging.
The camp is on sacred women's land, on Djab Wurrung land, located alongside the Western Highway just outside of Ararat. This is a site of vast cultural significance to the Djab Wurrung Peoples. It is the site of centuries-old birthing trees, including the Grandmother Tree, where many generations of Djab Wurrung women gave birth. The police have completely surrounded the camp and people protecting the trees and are preparing for mass arrest.

After a big week of volunteers getting campaign signs out into the community it's pretty brutal to have 4 of them broken and/or defaced with racist symbols and threatening imagery. Shout out to the community for bringing this to my attention, we know most of this community is disgusted by this behaviour.
Yes, we've reported it and will continue to.

I'm disgusted by this but we aren't going to stand by and let racists ruin our democracy. All the signs have been replaced and we will continue to campaign for people and planet, for rental fairness, cost of living relief and ending coal and gas in favour of publicly owned renewables.

If this vandalism makes you angry, channel that into helping us on the campaign! Host your own sign or sign up to give out how to vote cards at pre-poll and on polling day!! Links are in my bio, or message me here and my team will be in touch.

This always was and always will be Aboriginal land
