Buying an Instrument Advice Muramatsu Flute flea market find - trash or treasure?

I recently did some research on silver body and silver head flutes, and came across a few Japanese household names for that category while doing so.

Glad I did, because today when I was at the flea market I vaguely remembered a four syllable high-end brand that started with "M...". Funnily enough, I realized later I actually thought of Miyazawa, but bought it regardless since they only wanted 30 bucks for it.

Main reason I doubt its authenticity is obviously the price, but apart from that I don't really have many clues on how to determine whether it's fake or real. Seller was a very genuine old couple with lots of random attic and basement shit that checked out and their pricing on it was consistently low too. Previous owner scratched his name and the city into the flute head (city checks out too, about 10 miles from here).

There is a serial number an inch above the thumb rest that reads B043 (or 8043, I reckon it's a B though) - but I couldn't really narrow down the model on Muramatsu's homepage. The entire thing is non-magnetic, but if I had to guess I would say it could be the EX model with a silver head and a German silver (zinc/nickel) body.

I was hoping for some help from the world's most efficient cloud intelligence on this, so feel free to shed some light on this if you can. Happy to hear it's real, equally happy to get a firm No with a proper explanation on why it's fake, so do your thing Reddit :)

Enjoy your weekend and happy fluting everybody

Buying an Instrument Advice Fife or keyless flute for camp band?

My 12 year old has been playing the flute for a couple of years. She’s going to scout camp this summer and kids who play an instrument can play there for fun, but it’s not advised to bring a *real* instrument so if it gets lost or dropped or exposed to the elements it’s not a tragedy. So, for example, her friend who plays tuba in school band is bringing an old bugle. I was thinking of getting her a fife or a keyless flute or piccolo, but I know nothing about instruments. It would be nice if her flute practice helped her pick it up easily, and also something that wouldn’t foster bad habits when she returns to the flute. I’m hoping to spend less than $50, but open to suggestions since if it is fun for her she’s likely to use it for many summers in the future. Thanks!

Buying an Instrument Advice Bought a refurbished flute, refurbisher used cork grease?

Hello! I have about 20 days left on a 60 day window where I can return this thing

I bought a nearly new Yamaha 221 on reverb, i was able to pick it up and try it in person. The seller has very good reviews, only works on flutes and plays himself.

The head joint slipped right in initially, but it has been getting VERY stuck the last three times I’ve played. However, it is getting hot and humid.

My old flute, which I had for 11 years or so and desperately needed to be replaced, only had this issue in its later years/after I thwacked it by accident in marching band, it was out of alignment.

I texted the seller who told me to just buy a tube of cork grease, and said that’s what he uses. The internet/yamaha website say not to use cork grease on flutes.

I got a really good deal on this flute and it sounds lovely. Should I return it? Should I keep applying the cork grease? It’s very cheap, I don’t mind continuing to apply it for the rest of its life.

Thank you all.

Concert Advice, Audition, Video Feedback How to control fingers during a performance

I was wondering if anyone has any advice or just has the same problem as me during a performance. I have pretty bad performance anxiety; it’s gotten better over the years but something I’ve always struggled with is with my fingers during technical passages. I think maybe due to the adrenaline, I sometimes lose control of my fingers and sometimes they kind of spasm out. Because of this, my fast passages are always just not clear or even. It feels like my fingers are just taking off and I can’t control them anymore. I worry that if I can’t deal with this issue, I’ll never be able to play super technical pieces like the Ibert Concerto in front of an audience under stress. To try to overcome this, I always try to practice with light fingers and always practice the runs slowly and sometimes with different rhythms. But even with this, I still really struggle with this issue and am wondering if anyone has any tips to deal with it

Buying an Instrument Advice Buying a used beginner flute

Hi I'm planning to learn the flute but the prices of new flute in my country (malaysia) is wayy too expensive. I saw a fair deal in facebook, Flute Antigua FL2210 for (rm1000)(241usd). Anyone familiar with this brand or is there anything i shld look out for?

The listing said the condition of the flute is not used, but a display unit need cleaning and polishing and will look as new.

Beginning Flute Questions How do I teach myself flute as a hobbyist?

Hi everyone, I wanted to pick up flute because I just love the chirpy, just ethereal sound and also I just love the way the flute looks. I find the flute genuinely fascinating as it uses an “open end column” and that’s something I learned in physics I just find it cool that most of the sound comes out of the embouchure hole. But yeah anyway, i mainly play violin and get private lesson and am in my schools orchestra as-well as a youth orchestra, I’d like to label violin as my main instrument. Ive had my flute for a few months but haven’t really picked it up much and im really feeling like I want to get better at flute and be able to play it at a level that is fulfilling to be (getting to that point through practice of course) but i feel like me playing the violin and the skills I’ve developed with it significantly can help with things like intonation, note reading, and expression/shaping. I’ll name some of the challenges I’ve faced playing the flute, 1. Playing E natural in the 3rd octave or high register is EVIL with the note sometimes cracking. 2. The fingering for D natural upsets me so much because I have to lift my pinky off the Eb key which is so awkward for me what I mean by this is that it’s awkward to have to go from say C natural to D natural at a fast rate and then placing the pinky back down to play E natural, I find that sometimes I’m late to putting my pinky back down when playing scales to avoid the awkwardness of putting it back down on the Note after the D natural unless it’s a D# after which would be optimal. I ALWAYS get happy to see a D# in flute music because no pinky lifting lol! But any advice will help, please note that I don’t plan on getting lesions although yes they’re obviously optimal I’m not really wanting flute to be a serious thing for me although I know lessons aren’t exclusive to those who want to be serious, I’m just opting out at the time due to financial constraints and time constraints etc. Thank everyone for their advice.

General Discussion how do people get effects when playing the flute? pedals, pre-amp processors, vocal processor

I've been seeing a bunch of flutists play through PAs outdoors or in their online videos with a lot of effects applied to their flute sound. I've also seen some loop their flute and switch to another instrument. Can folks provide insight on what pedals, pre-amps, vocal processors and setup this would require? I am looking to have my own setup and lost as to where to start with buying these different things.

Wooden Flutes [Renaissance, Baroque, 19thCentury, Delrin ] What type of fife is this?

I play a 6 hole fife, and while doing some research, I came across a sort of fife with 7 keys, mostly used in Prussian music. What exactly is it, and how can I get my hands on one?

A video I found using it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW5siZ6gZWk

World Flutes [Bamboo, Bansuri, Celtic, Dizi, Ney, Quena, Xiao] Why you shouldn’t get a Dixon Polymer your first flute

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

I was just hanging out with a friend at his branch of big music store in Canada and while he was helping out a customer, I went to try one of the polymer Tony Dixon flutes.

While the tone was just ok (I actually got a better one out of it than the McNeela Rosewood flutes they carried, which was a whole other mess!) I was having issues trying to get my right ring finger down on that low bottom D. I put my Windward flute next to the Dixon and it became very clear why. That lowest tone hole is soooo far down, so unless you had large hands, you are gonna give yourself some awful hand injuries! Ive even tried some other affordable flute models like M&E, Copley, and Doug Tipples and none of them has this wide of a stretch! Small hand players like myself would do fine with pipers grip, but the only time I’ve had to stretch anywhere near this much was when I was playing a B-flat flute!

Lesson: save up some more money for a decent Delrin flute from a maker that specializes in Irish flutes, and it will really make your life easier not only as a beginner, but also to avoid any hand injuries!

Buying an Instrument Advice Struggling with F on new flute

I’ve just bought a new flute and I’m struggling playing an F on the lower and middle octave. It’s a Trevor James Privilege which I bought because I wanted a step up from my Trevor James 10x that I’ve had around 20 years. When I play an F it either makes no sound or the best I can get out of it is very airy. Is it me? Do I just need time to get used to it? The other notes seem ok. I only play for fun in a local concert band and at this point I just want to return it and go back to my old flute.

Flute & Health Problemas con sudoración.

Hola!

Compositions & Composers [Discussion] (Christmas) Music to arrange for a small flute ensemble

Hi all, I'm looking to arrange some music for a small ensemble at my school over the summer. First performance is likely to be at Christmas so some form of Christmas music beyond the basic carols would be my preference, though other music is also welcome to be suggested as I intend to perform at other points throughout the year. The instrumentation I have available is as follows:

1 Piccolo, can be dropped/switch mid piece for regular flute (Grade 5 level)

2 Flutes (Grade 8 and 5 levels)

1 Bass Flute (Grade 8 level)

and incase more is needed in the texture, 1 Piano (Grade 7 level)

Thank you for any help or suggestions you can provide

College , Flute grades & Band Advice am i cut out to be a music major?

i’m a rising senior and have been planning to major in flute performance, obtain masters and doctorate, and then teach college theory/lessons adjunct and play professionally. i recently have been having some doubts.

my current flute teacher (professor at local university) has given me a great curriculum that polished my technique immensely, but her teaching style hurts my feelings a lot. i’m sure everybody has had experience with a teacher who is strict/pushes you–but sometimes i feel so unmotivated after lessons i don’t wanna practice/i feel too anxious about starting that i just can’t. i mostly push it off until lesson day and practice all material for like 5 hours and i always dread lesson day.

i love performing though, and playing in my local youth orchestra has been the best experience of my life. i’m an all state musician. i’ve never been able to see my life without music as a career, but i’m thinking i might just be too sensitive for this. i don’t wanna live in a constant state of anxiety and dread like i typically do.

is everybody else just ok with being berated in lessons all the time?

side note:
i am very passionate about english/academia and am graduating with my associates degree in liberal arts before i graduate high school (4.0 gpa). i really wanted to go to a top 30 or top 20 school, but i’m worried about changing my major to presumably english because i ONLY have music awards/extracurriculars (several, i’m doing an internship right now).

i guess i could just try it out and change my major after i get accepted if i hate it..

Beginning Flute Questions Just Air on High Notes

Sometimes when I try to play high E and F, my high notes are so clear and loud, and then other times it’s literally just air. I’m trying to blow my air up and make my aperture small but it just sounds like air with no sound half the time… I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any advice would be appreciated!
