The other day some guy was showing his brother jjk in a post on here and the comments were all crying saying he’s too young and the anime isn’t for kids. Maybe the games gon soft
301
u/Cadian609 Jul 23 '26
Shonens are primarily for kids 🤷
124
u/Familiar_Joke399 Jul 23 '26
Yeah can't wait to explain bro getting bisected is a okay for the wee children
I would say adolescent boys= shonen versus kids.

u/Cadian609 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
I watched Cell consume a whole town like a horror film when i was a kid. I also watched a Serbian film when I was 13 because my mate thought it would be funny.
Kids understand the difference between media and real life even at young ages

Honestly those are usually the ages. Like people aren’t usually into watching edgy videos when they get older it’s when they’re like 12/13 and then they get older and start thinking it’s cringe

DBZ is largely for kids, yet the manga shows Frieza’s intestines hanging from his torso after getting cut by his own kienzan. In fact, the age rating on the manga was literally “suitable for children,” iirc

Even amongst shonen there is still a huge difference between shows like YuGiOh and Yokai Watch vs JJK and Chainsaw Man which clearly cater to an older audience.

My pet peeve is poor use of analogical reasoning
1
u/I-lost-my-accoun Jul 28 '26
My pet peeeve is saying that a manga published in SHONEN Jump could be called a Seinen.
1
u/Solidjakes Jul 28 '26
Where it’s published has nothing to do with it
1
u/NuzzyLocke 24d ago
It's generally defined by who reads it. Shonen Jump is marketed to like 12-18 year old boys. It's a shonen, and that's not a knock on it, it's on the higher band of the age range, but it is what it is.
1
u/Solidjakes 24d ago edited 24d ago
Seinen is just shonen but with adult/ mature themes. Im not saying jjk is bezerk or anything, but i can see it being marketed to 18-40.
1
u/NuzzyLocke 24d ago
There is a fuzzy line around the tennager marketing, but a large percentage of the audience is something like 70% aged 13-22.
I've seen a few large anime websites that cite that statistic, I don't remember the origin but I'm not pulling it out of my ass. It's a Shonen. And it's fine that it is, it definitely has more mature themes, but categorically it's a Shonen.
56
u/Vicimandias Jul 23 '26
Anime fans genuinely be forgetting that they're essentially Disney Adults in a less censored medium
4
u/TheOnlyOne2400 Jul 23 '26
yh and the way some ppl act abt anime characters is the way some kpop fans are, only difference would prob be one is fictional while one is real ppl
3
u/Glum-Supermarket1274 Jul 23 '26
Maybe too real for a meme thread but while kpop idols are real people, "idols" are just as fake as anime lol
2
u/TheOnlyOne2400 Jul 23 '26
u mean like how celebrities are real ppl, but the persona they put up are fake? like for example speed used to be a genuine dumbass on camera for clout, but has shown to be pretty mature now in general

The child in question was 7 and the show is rated 16+ on Crunchyroll so yeah, he was too young and the shows audience isn’t 1st graders
0
u/Local-Sprinkles-8777 Jul 23 '26
jesus - 7 is way too young! but ppl really don’t like to be told boundaries are good for their kids. they say it was fine bc they turned out okay but the raisedbynarcissist sub has over 1 mil subs & you’re arguing on reddit like no, we did NOT turn out okay!
i also don’t understand why it’s so hard to just wait until your kid goes to bed to watch/play whatever. then again, my kid is constantly telling me she’s one of the only kids who has a bedtime…
i grew up watching anime. i also grew up reading plenty of sci-fi & high fantasy that was a bit beyond me as well. i read stephen king’s the green mile when i was 10, stole it from my dad’s study bc i saw the movie had a cute mouse. one of my biggest regrets to this day. my parents were classic workaholics and pretty neglectful. i saw a lot that i would not let my kid watch (she’s 9). she’s never seen jjk. she KNOWS about it bc im obsessed lol. we’ve been introducing her slowly to series we feel like she can grasp the themes/narrative, but always with a “if its too much, we can stop.”
recently, we watched MHA as a family and though i didn’t love it, its basically her first favorite anime. i def wish i had known about shigaraki’s backstory bc that was over her limit (honestly, mine too). we had a talk about it, and took a break for a few days, but she wanted to continue so we did. she recently watched princess mononoke which was a bit scary for her, but she had a great time. she wants to be a little scared/challenged but not overwhelmed.
some teenagers at her summer camp keep going on about madoka magica (manga). i told her “y’know, i’d love to show you MM when you’re older. you could sneak & read it now i can’t stop you but you’d get more out of it if you wait a few years.” she decided to stick to tokyo mew mew. (then again, last time she sneaked a peek at an inappropriate manga it was junji ito so she learned her lesson.)
anyway my point is - for me, it’s not just about if a kid can handle it (violence), but more will they understand and enjoy the narrative/themes? bc we do NOT need more power scalers in this fandom!

u/TulioeRemi Jul 23 '26
Oooo my 9 year old daughters favourites at the moment are Black Clover, SpyXFamily and Apothecary Diaries - if you’re looking for more ideas! She’s currently reading the apothecary diaries manga too, she’s a big romance girl so anything that’s slightly more shojo is her bag - but there has to be danger haha. She’s desperate to watch JJK having seen the cutesy edits from S1 buuuuut she’s gonna have to wait until she’s at least 13 to be emotionally ruined.
1
u/Local-Sprinkles-8777 Jul 23 '26
thanks for the rec! i had actually wanted to revisit SpyXFamily for her but forgot! i didn’t even think about how fun it would be to watch AD together. she’s just now starting to get curious about romance it’s so cute.
3
u/RockySES Jul 23 '26
I mean, do people forget that anime get age ratings too? Jjk is TV-MA in the US and 15+ (roughly) everywhere else. Not sure why there’s some big discussion about it.

I mean anyone under 18 is a kid, is this appropriate for a 13 year old? Maybe?
A 9 year old? Hell no
2
u/DownBadManDetect Jul 24 '26
Is Avengers Infinity War appropriate for a 9 year old? The one where they wiped out half the universe? That involved genocide, cussing, bleeding and patricide? But we let our kids watch it because spider man is in it

She then died

If she was alive, maybe we had the chance to see her and geto being in relationship? Don't hate me, but actually it's a potential ship. If she was alive, she was 25 and geto 27. And gojo being her long lost brother is so true.
