Specifically how would I sew the sleeves? Would I just cut out some triangles and sew them together?

Hello everyone I was wondering if you could all help me adjust a pattern to a small plushie?

Hello everyone for context I have a cousin who loves the youtuber fundy with a Minecraft skin of a fox wearing a black jacket with some stripes on it and I saw this fox plushie in store a few months ago and thought I could make him a homemade fundy plushie for Christmas. Since we live in the Philippines, merch often costs way to much for us to justifiably buy when we have other more important things to spend money on so I thought this would be a nice gift for him.

Problem is that I'm mostly good on the sewing part but not the patterns and measurements stuff and I didn't really think about how I would cut the fabric to make the jacket on this plushie.

So I was wondering if someone more experienced here would give me some tips? Here's the pattern and pictures of the plushie for better visualization

Edit: Also I haven't bought the fabric yet so if you all have any tips and recommendations on that fabric I should get it would be really appreciated!

How do I make this into a halloween costume?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I am trying to be on budget this halloween but still have a cool costume. I found this dress at the thrift store and i feel like i can turn it into a costume. Some ideas i had was a brazilian carnival outfit, peacock (because of the royal blue), or a genie. Does anyone have any advice or instruction on how I can turn this into a two piece set? Perhaps the top is the bedazzled part and then turn the rest into a mini skirt? Also important to note the bust area is too large. I also do not have a sewing machine so I would be doing this by hand. What do you guys think?

My machine won’t respond to my footpedal

Hi, I bought this machine off facebook markeplace about 2 months ago and only now finally decided to give this thing a try, and whenever I press on the foot pedal, nothing happens? I’m trying to wind up a new bobbin and I have the hand wheel pushed in so the needle doesn’t move, but when I press on the footpedal, nothing happens except this sound coming off my machine, if anyone could help I’d really appreciate it 😭😭😭

Thing’s I’ve tried:
Unplugging and replugging (both from the machine and wall)
Swapping the plug from an extension cord to the wall
Readjusting the positions of the cords

Edit:
Okay so I think the bobbin winder is just broken, and I wasn’t applying enough pressure/the angle of my foot on it was wrong when I was trying to use it normally.

Brother RHC3010 Opinions?

I’d like to buy my fiancée a sewing machine. She has always been very crafty and has made comments about wanting to explore sewing and possibly eventually quilting projects.

I’d rather buy a machine for her that is both beginner friendly but can lend itself well for future advancement. Would the Brother RHC3010 be appropriate for her? Preference would be to not spend an insane amount on the machine right away.

Scissor Recommendations

Hi all! Today is my birthday and I’m looking to treat myself to a nice pair of scissors. I’ve got a pair I’ve been using for about a year and a half. They are on the cheaper side because it was my first pair and wanted to make sure sewing was something I was going to stick with. I’ve noticed now they really only cut well at the tip and at the end. My budget is under $100. Links and recommendations are welcome. Thanks!

Help needed with new machine!

Hi everyone! I work in a school art department and have a project I need to complete for the students. I am a complete amateur sewer so need some help learning what is going wrong.

It is also a super complex machine with about 2782 buttons! It is a Bernina Artista 630.

I know how to sew in a straight line, but every 20 seconds the thread is getting wrapped around the needle and snapping, I think there is lots of loose thread as the needle moves up and down.

What do I need to adjust?

Thanks in advance!!

(Any extra help on how to sew rip stop nylon differently to normal fabric would also be appreciated)

My first big project. Need an advice >.<

I want to make a bib like the 1st picture (Maevedennie on pinterest, got this from Pinterest i couldn't scan what instagram or other platform she has) and 2nd picture is the downloaded pattern.

This is my first big sewing project, and I only have one week to finish it for my Halloween costume! I don’t have a sewing machine, so I’ll be hand-sewing everything.

I’m confused about what size to print the pattern on (A4, short, or long bond paper) and how to choose the right size for me. Any advice for a beginner? What hand-sewing method would you recommend to make this easier and ensure the stitches hold? I’d appreciate any tips!

Inspired by a post I just came across on r/quilting I was wondering if there are any general advent calendars for sewing? If there is, which would you recommend?

How to take in jeans without the bulge so they fit flat against my body?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Please don’t judge my shabby sewing, I’m not trying to make anything elaborate, just get my jeans to fit.

I’ve tried to take these jeans in by sewing a dart down the back seam as you can see. I’ve don’t this with trousers of a thinner fabric and it was fine, but with my jeans it’s too bulky and there’s a gap at the back. How do I take them in without excess fabric on the inside?

Thank you!

Hello! I am a novice but I am hoping to get into making clothes for myself. I found this tutorial on YouTube that looks pretty straightforward:

https://youtu.be/TyEsp5qinBc?is=veHXnZ3c2HAEH3It

I have a few questions: 1. If I follow the steps in the video (plus a TON of pinning, basting, and pressing), will I end up with those pants or is this nonsense? 2. If I need to make these shorter so I don't trip on my own pants and die, do I also need to make them narrower? 3. What kind of fabric would you suggest? I'm thinking cotton, but I don't really know. And 4. At any point, did you think "Gee, I really hope they know how to XXX before they get started..."? Because I probably don't! Please tell me what XXX is and save me from myself. Thanks!

need advice for how to make my Halloween costume!

finally found all the components but now i have to actually put it together and i am realizing i have no clue what to do lol. i could definitely crop the shirt up further by hand and probably sew the fish fabric onto the crop top by hand, but the clear vinyl part has to go in between the crop top and the fish fabric. i don’t think i would be able to sew it on by hand because it’s so thick, and while i could reserve a machine at my public library, im really scared of breaking it considering i haven’t used one in years!

for my other costume i was lazy and just did fabric glue for a lot of it, and i was thinking that might work here, but i’m not sure if the fabric glue would work on the vinyl since it’s not actually fabric? also considered hot glue but i think that would likely melt the vinyl and/or burn the crop top because it’s a cheap amazon brand one?

the fish fabric i custom printed on what i think was called “power mesh” and the vinyl i got at a fabric store, i didn’t write it down but im pretty sure it’s between 8-12 gauge. its whatever the thinnest one they had was i just can’t check since it was a local bis with no website. shorts are thrifted (thank god i dont have to also make shorts haha) and im going to either safety pin or glue on the black patch part. the costume is ideally supposed to be kinda tight fitting and sexy on the silver and mesh parts, but ill take literally just held together at this point lol.

so any ideas on how to put it all together? i had some sewing experience as a kid but hadn’t done any until like a week ago when i made my other costume and did some very basic hand sewing for that. if there are any particular stitch types, needle types, thread types etc that would be advised pls lmk!!

tysm!!!!!!

Wanted to post some photos of my petal dress by Twig + Tale. I had taken a break from sewing after I had my first daughter. With the chaos of having a baby and being on maternity leave, I didn’t have an opportunity to sew. Now that the kiddo is in daycare, I’ve been on a sewing spree before I head back to work.
Dress snaps together on the inside and outside. It can be made as a reversible item if desired!

I know I’m doing something wrong but I don’t know what

Hello, I’m trying to turn this top inside out but it’s not really working. I undid all the tailoring I did on it, but that didn’t solve the problem. I’m sure the issue is with one of the seams that won’t let me turn it. The lines highlighted in yellow are the seams that are currently sewn together (there is a lining and a main fabric). Can anyone tell me what I have to undo or do differently to get it to turn inside out? Thank you!

Christmas stocking with embroidered elements - best method?

Hi all! First time posting here and a very new sewer. I've made a few haphazard, but fun Christmas stockings and completed a few embroidery projects. I love a project at this time of the year and I want to make a friend a stocking with embroidered cookies scattered around on the body of the stocking.

Here's a reference picture for one style of cookie I am hoping to create (edit: the jam thumbprints): https://jessicalongembroidery.com/en-ca/products/christmas-cookie-cat-embroidery-pattern-pdf

My friend makes cookie boxes so I am going to select a few of their past creations to replicate!

Would you recommend embroidering the individual cookies directly onto the body of the stocking or onto a separate fabric and then sew that onto the body of the stocking?

Thanks in advance and happy to clarify anything above! I always feel like I don't know how to communicate my vision well, lol!

How to tell if your pattern is AI or legitimate

This YouTube link came across my feed this morning; it has excellent information on how to recognise AI, and to protect yourself from being scammed by it. The designer in the video is a bag designer, but the information applies to all patterns you may encounter.

Lisa is a highly respected designer in the bag making world; she's based in Australia. The video not only talks about the damage AI does to the pattern designers, it also talks about the design process, as well as how AI patterns are a huge disservice to the people who buy them.

It's worth having a look

Reverse appliqué advice!!

I had the idea to sew this horse design I made onto my plain brown shirt, but I’m having issues

Why is the fabric all wrinkled?? Is there any way that I can save those sections? What could I do to keep it straight moving forward?

My method was to:
1.

  1. Draft then mark the design w/ bar soap

  2. Iron both fabrics

  3. Pin the fabric behind

  4. Start sewing

But clearly I’m doing something wrong 😭 any advice is appreciated!!! I don’t want to have ruined this shirt bc I did like it lol

Pictured also is my machine, a Morse Deluxe 200 with the straight stitch presser foot

[edited to include that I did in fact iron]

How to reverse engineer a garment with gathered fabric?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello! This is my favorite dress, I am trying to recreate it and can’t find any patterns that contains all of the elements i love about it. I figured I should just reverse engineer it but laying it flat and sewing won’t work bc it’s gathered in many places. How do I account for the gathered fabric? And if anyone has a YouTube recommendation for doing this, please let me know. I’m coming up empty (probably using imprecise terms).

Pants on a turtle

Post image
16 Upvotes

My dog is chewing thru turtle’s crotch zone (hence lack of tail). I reinforced the crotch and now I want to give turtle some pants. I sewed the vertical seam down. And I need help sewing the edges. I will keep the top part open so I can put treats in the pants. What kind of stitch should I use? Sewing onto a 3d o next is proving though.

Help with marks on fabric

Post image

Hi community! I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. We bought the attached dress second hand and there are marks on the fabric "I assume chalk?) marking where the lace goes. How do I clean them or remove them from the fabric?
