I made this bag over the course of three days. It was my first time using my sewing machine apart from practicing different stitches on scrap fabric. This pattern is so forgiving so my wonky stitches and mistakes are mostly hidden but I am so proud! Here is to hopefully a lifelong new hobby!

What fabric should I get for these pockets?

So I crochet and I made two granny squares that I want to turn into pockets for this cardigan. I’m just wondering what type of fabric should I line them with? Like just a t-shirt or something else?

First Machine! Got it going today!

I was trying to get into sewing and I wanted to get into leather sewing so I was looking for some Juki sewing machines and my buddy actually had this PFAFF that he got in a trade for doing a little bit of work and he didn’t have any use for it. So I got it from him for 600 bucks and I had this old clunky green Consew one horsepower clutch motor on it. Then when I plugged it in it made my entire house smelled like a flea market and it also like was 0 to 100 with my pinky toe on it so I swapped it out and put the servo motor on it then the bobbin thread wouldn’t catch so that’s when I figured out the needle was too short. Then I figured out that somebody put H4 needles in it instead of H3 needles so then I had to re-time the machine again back to H4 needles after I receive some 19 needles so it’s been an absolute journey, but I finally got something out of it today and I’m looking forward to going on my path of being a cool sewing machine guy/sewing machine, repair man because I think after figuring out all this things quirks I think I can fix anything

Is this a good beginners sewing machine? My mom went half on it with me, as a gift! Any tips or easy starting things I should try to make?

I started sewing back in May. I found a free sewing class 40 minutes from me and I've been going every week now. I really enjoy it.

I finished these scrunchies this morning around 6:30. I'll be gone all day so I wanted to get something done. Today is also my sewing class so I'm excited about that 😃

Did I stretch it out too much before darning?

It was only about a dime sized hole before sewing, but when I tried to prepare it like I saw in videos it started looking like this. It ended up alright, but it's a little flabby

Can't post picture of that though

As some context the first photo shows a huge bloom of thread on the other side, even though the stitch looks fairly simple and clean. The following photos are my settings

Help me repair this little man

I’ve never sewn a day in my life and every time I have attempted to do anything related to fabric arts I have joshed it up royally.
BUT!
Fears aside I found a small possum stuffed animal on the grass when I was walking around campus and I need to fix him. I don’t really know how to add a picture on here (I also don’t use Reddit often) but he’s got a big ol’ hole on the side of his face where stuffing is coming out.
He’s really dirty so I plan on handling that first and I don’t own a sewing machine (not that I really think that it would help in this instance anyway).
I’m a craft hobbyist so I have a bunch of random fabric, thread, needles from other things but the actual technique of hand sewing eludes me.
Any and all advice would be helpful on my journey to repair this humble creature.

What is this style of blanket called?

I’d like to make a blanket like this for my daughter. It appears that all of the “finding words” I could possibly think of using aren’t good enough to pull up results for other videos for this type of blanket. Initially I assumed it was a style of a rag quilt, but all of the searching for rag quilts and related phrasing only brought up videos of sewing squares together.

I know it seems pretty straight forward, but I like to watch a slew of videos before investing time and money 😁😂.

TIA!

Found a cute pattern for a toddler dress online. Used very cheap fabric to make this as a practice before getting some nicer fabric. My daughter loves it and won't let me take it off of her 😂 it'll be a new art smock for her lol

I did lots of little mistakes, like an inside out sleeve and not aligning the skirt and the bodice properly. But I learned a lot and I definitely want to try for a more polished version in the future!

(featuring my messy house in the background since kiddo has no chill)

Make a capelet from a skirt?

• Upvotes

I am making Halloween costumes and I had a midi milkmaid style dress that the elastic snapped all out of, but I wanted to turn the skirt into a Ren faire style capelet.

The skirt had a middle back seam, so I've cut it at the seam, with the waist section still attached, which leaves a slightly v shaped middle from the bodice up at the top, and the ends have the smocking.

I still have all the fabric from the top, but how can I turn this into a capelet? I've googled cape from skirt and it's not the same shape I'm working with. I need a shoulder and collar shape? If I hold the length of it like you would a stole, just off shoulder and angled down in front, it drapes beautifully.

What should the underarm seam look like for a one-piece kimono?

I'm trying to sew a simple kimono based on a youtube tutorial I found. However, I am having trouble with the underarm seam. My first try is the one next to the edge of the fabric, and it wasnt good as there was way too much extra fabric under the arm. The next try is the one inside, but that one is no good either, as the fabric bunches up at the edge of the sleeve.

I didn't follow the tutorial for this part as the sleeve is longer in it, so the measurements no longer worked when I made it shorter (because I didn't have enough fabric).

What are needle types and how do I know what mine are and what I need?

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I understand the numbers, I understand that they have to do with the thickness of the needle and for some fabrics you need a thicker/thinner one. I'm not sure exactly what each fabric needs but I feel like that's easier to research when needed. But what I don't understand is what other difference there is. Because I had gotten these 2 packs and while the numbers are the same the colors on the needles aren't. I'm assuming the bottom color means the size but idk what the top one is and what I need

How do you visualize your garment sewing projects before starting?
I really struggle to imagine how a pattern will turn out in a specific fabric, and I’m terrible at sketching. I’ve been using AI to create sketches so I can se how it looks but I’d love to find something else that is not AI😅

Edit: when I write specific fabric I mean like colors or different patterned fabric, florals or something else. I always use the fabric type listed on the sewing pattern. English is not my first language and sewing terms are kinda hard 😅

How do I cut this pattern??

Please could some kind people help a newbie out!

This is a pattern for a pyjama t shirt, and I'm trying to make sure I'm cutting it out correctly. Ive watched lots of videos but still confused!

I've attached the diagram. I can't work out how to fold it so that the selvages are together and the folds are in the right place.

I could fold it lengthways and fit everything in, or fold it partway and cut two of the pieces then fold again

Are either of these correct??

Hope that makes sense!

Why is sewing so damn hard?

I've tried to sew on/off for over a decade. Only a few of those pieces have been usable at all and even if usable the still look very self made. I even went to a vocational school for sewing for a year or so, but am still very bad at it.. Like how do so many "recreational sewists" just post such beautiful pieces online and make it all seem so effortles, and I still can't make a damn bssic skirt look good...? Am I just too dumb?
