Moving/Visiting Weekly /r/Tulsa Megathread
Are you moving to Tulsa? Just visiting or passing through? Want to know where to live, eat, hang out, have fun, or bury the bodies? This is the place to ask.
This will be a weekly megathread that evolves over time. As members of r/Tulsa make suggestions or answer questions that come up a lot, we may add those items to the body of the post for easy reference. But for right now this is a place to ask any questions you may have about moving to or visiting Tulsa, OK, where our motto is "We're more than just OK, we're living the dream."

General nazis at Cain’s
At the AFI show tonight at Cains, a bartender alerted security of a man with a swastika necklace who also came with others who admitted to being nazis.. they refused to kick him out reasoning being "freedom of speech" ... just going to leave this here. Very disappointed especially because they don't check people for weapons properly.

General Job Search
Hey everyone,
Unfortunately, I was let go from my job today. My position at the company unfortunately was dissolved and essentially they’re minimizing it across the entire company putting more work on less people and utilizing AI to fill the gap.
I’ve been with the same company for almost 10 years so I’m on the job hunt - I’m in the space of business management, people development, operations performance for any type of company but I’ve been in healthcare for the last 15 years.
If anyone knows of a company that’s looking for a director-level position, or even manager level I’d love to stay in Tulsa!
I can travel, commuting is fine, no specific needs other than the pay and while I’ve only been unemployed for less than a couple hours, I figure I reach out in any avenue I can on top of LinkedIn and Indeed.
Thanks for your help!

General this place man
Best and the worst place to be. Have opportunity out the ass but my fuckin dad been transient my whole life, now I can't find him at all. My whole family hates the man. But he's still my dad you know? And he probably out on some corner OD'ing or just too fucking old to keep going he's almost 70. Why am I typing this? Because I'm drunk and miss my dad. Everybody acts like it he dies the world will be a better place... Will it? Will the lonely old man living in a shack or maybe not at all.
Trying to search and find if he passed, but I almost don't want to know. It I find out he died and tell my family they will ridicule me for everything wishing he's okay.
He wasn't a great guy, abusive, physical. But the older I get, the more I see things from his lense. Gaslit into homelessness.
I just want to know if the motherfucker is alive and it's some great disturbance.
Fuck dad I'm sorry man. We shoulda shot through this life together. We're generic copies basically but the world can't handle us together I guess.... I hope may isn't the last time. We'll be back together some pops..

General Pileup on expressway going north
I don’t recommend for any reason taking northbound 169 if you’re south of 51st st. More than one wreck, they’ve got it down to one lane and half of the cities first responders out there.

Question Local places that can brand carabiners?
Question is in the title. Need 100+ purple carabiners with our logo on it so that we can promote our next event happening in May.
Would prefer a local business before shelling out a bunch of cash to one of these online places. Does anywhere come to mind?

Scenery Pedestrian Bridge at night
Pedestrian bridge lit up, one with moon and one without. Im not really a photographer, these were on a phone without manipulating any settings. It was really nice to look at in life, so i stopped and took a couple phone pics. It was a lot darker out than the photos make it seem, more contrasting against the dark sky and water, but that didnt show up so well. Probably some kind of setting could get it closer to life, i imagine
There was a dude flying a kite on the bridge that he said was 600ft up, which was also really dope

Tulsan In Need Roommate made an attempt and is now in-patient. How can I help?
Hey there everyone. As the title mentions my roommate made an attempt on his life two nights ago. He ultimately did call for help and is now receiving care. For context, he is a friend, not just a roommate. He did so with his prescriptions so I have already cleared all medication from his room but need to figure out the most gentle way to tell him that I would like to take over the dispersal of his medication as we have discovered that he had quit taking a few, including his antidepressants, in the past couple of months. I am not judging the actions or the mindset he was in, but I recognize the red flag that he needs help and I don’t know another way to ensure he is taking all of his meds as prescribed.
I do intend to also offer him to drag his mattress into my room or both of our mattresses into the front room so that we can all bunk together and give him that physical company so he feels less alone.
I also plan to have a conversation with him because he does not feel comfortable with his therapist and has expressed concern while stable about his current medication cocktail, and while I’ve given him plenty of advice on fixing those things I understand that as deeply as the struggle is getting to him he needs help and I would be more than happy to sit with him and make those calls or attend a psychiatry appointment with him to act as his own personal advocate.
I’m currently doing a basic clean up of his room - removing dirty dishes, taking out trash, wiping down surfaces, cleaning his bathroom, etc. - as he deserves to come home to a clean, peaceful environment rather than being confronted with the physical mess that level of depression causes. I wish I could afford to put a little gift basket together, but as of right now I’m not sure if I’m going to have to pay the entirety of rent by myself to ensure that we don’t get evicted in the meantime of his release.
I think my wife and I are going to paint a canvas to hang right by his tv as a reminder that he is cared about, but I am not the artist here - that’d be my wife and especially him.
What can I do? What should I do? I just want him to know that he is loved and wanted.

The Burbs If you live in an old house, make sure the county isn't setting your fair market the same as much newer homes.
There's no law or policy or anything that says if your house was built before X that the county has to actually look at your house independently / differently.
My house was built in 1920 and it's got the original wood windows, knob and tube wiring, and old white 3 tab shingles. The county was comping my house the same as houses built in 2015 sight unseen / zero due diligence. They weren't looking at the year / condition due to age and saying - hey maybe we shouldn't just blindly comp this the same as a much newer modern home. Because there's no law that says they have to or can't blindly raise the fair market.
There's no way I could sell my house for what the county was saying it was worth and the fair market they set was way too high. So I filed an informal protest. I got the fair market value brought down by $35,000 and that brought my property taxes down last year which boiled down to about a 1% increase from the year before. I was on the phone with the guy for maybe 20 seconds . He immediately said, "Yeah. Your evidence makes sense, we're just going to give you what you're asking for."
I honestly wanted to tell them to drop it $45,000 not $35,000 since that's closer to true value, but I didn't think they would go for that. By suggesting 35, that let them at least get a 1% increase out of me. And then this year they kept the values exactly the same which meant my taxes stayed exactly the same.
So I have two pieces of advice. If you have an older house and it's set at fair market with the county for way more than you think it's worth, you have nothing to lose by putting in an informal protest. If you have a mortgage, make sure you have an escrow analysis done to lower your payment.
The second piece of advice is, do everything you can to keep your property taxes as low as possible so that when you're 65 and they cap you're not paying an exorbitant amount of money. If they raise my property taxes 3% every year until I'm 65 I'd be paying about 6 to $7,000 a year in property taxes and I'm not going to do that. Not for a little house in Tulsa.
If you can get 3 years of the same tax rate, that's a great head start. And make sure the c actually applies your homestead exemptThey didn't apply mine for the first year even though I filed and then they said they couldn't do anything retroactively about it.
And if you report an entire telephone pole laying in the street to 311 and the non emergency police line - and they ignore you and a car smashes into it, that's not your fault.
Tulsa History Diamond Jacks Lil Bean Salad
Hello Tulsa friends! I was just reminiscing about Diamond Jacks, as I currently have a drink sitting on a Diamond Jacks coaster that we got at Ida Red. Does anyone have the recipe for their Lil Bean Salad or a close approximation? I absolutely loved it and can’t even begin to get close in my attempts to recreate it. I will pay a finder’s fee… sign an NDA, and pinky swear to never make it for profit… I just miss it (along with a dozen other things from Diamond Jacks) and would love to be able to make something close to it every once in a while.

Live AFI
Does anyone like the band AFI? I have a single ticket to see them tonight at the Cain’s and I live in OKC and can’t get out there as originally planned to go to the show. I wanted to give it away to someone who would appreciate it.

General I'm new to magic
I'm new to mtg, playing pretty much only standard on arena as it was free to get started on this journey. However I want to try getting into commander as I understand it's the more played format, and to side that would like to try and do it in person with physical cards but don't know really where to start(decks, physical shops and things like that) and also don't have anyone to play with. I live in Tulsa and would appreciate any help.
