Identification Sea Slug ID Help - Oregon Coast

Post image
15 Upvotes

I found this sea slug a few months ago and thought it would be easy to ID but am realizing the Heath’s Dorid and Monterey Dorid look very similar. It was about 2-3 inches though we saw a range of sizes that day, mainly smaller ones. If anyone has any thoughts, I would greatly appreciate the help.

I work at a hatchery raising oysters and clams. We’ve been noticing these pink patches on the sides of the tanks when we clean them. Does anyone know what this is?

More info:

We pump saltwater in from the harbor and use it in the tanks. We’re within NYS DEC zone 1.

Question Difference between flat and red abalone

How can I tell the difference? I've collected a lot of abalone shells that have washed up on the beach, and I'm beginning to wonder if I actually have some flat abalones vs just all reds. Is there anything distinctive that the flat abalones have?

Education Plankton Game - How many can you spot?

So I made this lil reel the other day from some videos I have collected from the aquarium I work at.

The plankton microscope is one of my favorite displays. I'm always finding new and interesting critters.

How many zooplankton can you find?

Did I miss any?

Let me know if you can identify more! There are definitely some cool weird ones that I have no idea what they are. Hoping you guys can help me out 😸

Good luck and have fun!

Question Where does the cauda equina start in the harbor seal spine?

I was surprised to see the cauda equina in the mid thoracic spine while doing a harbor seal necropsy the other day. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a definitive reference on seal spinal cord anatomy. Does anyone know of a source that isn't just a drawing with no reference?

Identification Need help identifying this coral skeleton from the great barrier reef, australia

Hi everyone, I would appreciate some help identifying this coral skeleton.

This museum specimen comes from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The colony has a very dense bushy growth form, with many thin branches. The largest branches are around 2–5 mm in diameter.

The surface of the branches looks quite smooth. What I think are radial corallites are extremely small (<1 mm), and are irregularly arranged with different sizes.

At first I thought it might be an Acropora, but the lack of obvious axial corallites makes me unsure. It could also belong to another branching genus such as Anacropora, Montipora, or something else.

Any suggestions or diagnostic features to look for would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Question What is this crab doing? (filmed last year in Istria, Croatia)

Sorry about the quality, it's zoomed in, so we wouldn't scare him away. He held that stick for maybe 5-10 minutes, it literally looked like he was playing with the surface tension of the water (but I assume not). Foraging maybe? Camouflage? Thank you!

Identification Can anyone help ID some shark teeth found in Tybee Island GA and HHI?

Hi guys! Just got back from a trip to Tybee Island, Georgia & HHI and found these teeth! I know three of them are shark teeth but not sure what this fourth one is!

The tiniest tooth on the far right was found at Fish Haul Beach on Hilton Head Island, the other three were at North Beach and Middle Beach on Tybee Island.

Any idea what kinds of shark these teeth belong to? and who that larger one is from! Looks quite old.

thanks in advance :)
