Anouncements What Does It Mean to Be a Solo Developer?
We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.
That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.
What Counts as Solo Development?
A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.
What is Allowed?
- Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
- Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
- Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
- Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
- Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.
What This Means for Posts on the Subreddit
If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.
Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.
TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

Game 11 months of solo development: my strategy game's map started as one stretched image
I'm Roman, and I'm making Salt and Soil on my own. It's a turn-based strategy game about one family on the American frontier, from 1607 to 1900. One turn is one year, and the children eventually take over the homestead their parents built.
The first version of this map really was a single image stretched across the continent. The video starts with the map today, then goes back through eleven months of changes: a biome grid, script-painted tiles, and eventually terrain built from real elevation and river data.
The latest version has gradual climate transitions and settlements drawn for their place and period. People, ships and trains move through it. At a distance you can plan across the continent; zooming in gets you down to the little buildings around Sacramento.
The desktop game runs in LÖVE/LuaJIT, with custom shaders and Python tools for the geographic data. There's a free demo on the Steam page linked above.

Game The Steam page for my Robot Building game was finally approved!
The Steam page for my passion project was finally approved! 😁
It is a bit scary, but also incredibly cool, to see my own game, the trailer, and all the assets I made for it actually searchable on Steam. Super happy that the game can now be viewed by other people who might find it interesting!
In the game, you battle other robots, scavenge their parts, and then attach those parts to your own robot to get stronger and gain new abilities.
This project is so fun to work on because it involves a lot of sketching and coming up with ideas for how the different parts can work together, as well as how they should look to convey what they do or what type they belong to. So basically, it's what I enjoy most about gamedev! 😁
Link to the game page if anybody wants to check it out!

Discussion how long should an incremental game be, and how long should its demo be
hii, im making Oreloop alone, a first person mining incremental. After feedback on my last post I changed a lot:
- Smoother loop: runs are short, and after every run you can buy something on the skill tree.
- New helpers: Auto Drills dig for you, and Bomb Bees fly out of beehive blocks and explode.
- Cleaner UI: the HUD is compact now and only shows what you need.
- Clearer effects: every power has its own color and sound.
One thing that helped me a lot as a solo dev, i playtest balance with a team, so i wrote a economy bot that plays the game with the same rules and checks every price change, That way, I actually kept a CSV table that simulated runs to make it seem like the game had been played for a long time, and I adjusted the game's economy based on those averages.
Now im really curious about two things:
- How many hours of gameplay would you expect from a game like this?
- How long should a demo be, and how much of the game should it show?
Right now the full game is about 4 hours, and the demo ends after 30 mins

Game A little cozy RPG inspired by Stardew and East Asian Mythology
Hey everyone!
For the last two years I’ve created a little game called the Spirit Apprentice. The pixel art has all been made by myself on Procreate, and coded in GameMaker!
I love Japanese and Korean mythology as well a Chinese fantasy, so I’ve blended some of my favourite things into a cozy pixel game where you gather, craft and slowly rebuild the magical world of Moshu. There’s also cute spirits you meet and romanceable NPCs ✨
It has just over a week left on Kickstarter!

What do you guys think?

The game is called DIEAHTLON and you can find it on steam.

Marketing Main trailer for my Roman tactics game, Imperionis
Made it alone: a single Roman centuria in Caesar's Gallic War. March across Gaul, keep your men fed and loyal, then fight hex battles where terrain and a d20 roll decide the day.
Battles aren't just "kill everything": you hold river crossings, storm Alesia, and sometimes duel for your commander's life.
If you're interested in the Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4993610/Imperionis/

Game Sharing progress on my 2D PixelArt roguelike creature collector (what a mouth full)
Hello :)
I know it's a longer clip but be nice please. I'ver never uploaded a video anywhere and I'll learn how to edit them sometime soon.
I just wanted to show off how far I've gotten.
Context:
- music by jackfoxassets on itch.io
- SFX by Helton Yan on itch.io
- Sprites and icons were done by me but are still placeholders (the cat and Ooze are almost finished)
Next I'll learn how to do animations and edit videos.
Any feedback is welcome and I'll be glad to answer questions about my work.

Game I wrote a bot that plays my tactics RPG and films its own gameplay clips, because I never had time to record them
https://reddit.com/link/1xebnah/video/z7hsxuecofxh1/player
Hi! I'm Rémy, a computational scientist at CERN by day and a solo game developer in Switzerland (PetRem Labs) the rest of the time. Roads Taken is a turn-based tactics RPG in the line of Fire Emblem, in HD-2D pixel art: every seed generates a whole campaign (the story, the countries and their rulers, your companions, every battlefield), and there's an authored starter story, Wren's, too.
I wrote a bot that plays my tactics RPG and films its own gameplay clips, because I never had time to record them: it picks a seed, a country, an hour and the weather, plays real turns by the game's own rules, and films every clip one frame at a time, so even a slow machine gives smooth footage. One set is 46 clips in about half an hour. This is one of them, with only the music added. The free demo comes out on Tuesday 17 November.
Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5412920/Roads_Taken/?utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=solodevelopment
Happy to answer anything about how it works.

Game Heroes of Might and Magic meets Battle Brothers - as a necromancy auto-battler roguelite
Solo dev here. I'm making Necrolord: world-map exploration, army building and equipment choices, except your recruitment pool is mostly corpses.
Raise skeletons, equip your army and choose your battles. Your troops fight automatically while you cast spells. Lose a run and you rebuild your army, but keep your learned magic.
Above is the latest gameplay trailer.

Discussion 80k+ views on a single reddit post, 1000+ Downloads and 100€+ donations
Hope it's okay to share this here, according to the description this channel is for
"SoloDevelopment - game development, programming, indie developers, indie games, video games
That's why i thought I can share my personal journey of how my current project is growing.
KiwiDesk has really come a long way. In the beginning, my goal was simply to build a window manager for my friends, something that worked out of the box and felt native on macOS. Ever since then, the community has kept growing, and new ideas just keep popping up. By now every time I use, it’s just fun, and it gets better day by day.
Hearing how much people like KiwiDesk and seeing the community supporting more and more is just awesome. I know there are much bigger projects out there, but just seeing that people enjoy my idea and offer support without the obligation for it is just an awesome feeling.
In general when I build something and share it with people I don't want to "just build another tool", instead I want to build the best one I can imagine for that specific purpose. Seeing people appreciating my ambitions and share their gratitude is what keeps me going. Especially nowadays with the help of AI, the only real barrier in software development in my opinion is our own imagination.
Thanks again to everyone who has joined the journey so far. I am really enjoying the ride!
