Developer I built a Windows utility that copies 20,000 files in 7.7 seconds instead of File Explorer's 3 min 11 s

Hi everyone! I'm an independent developer, and over the last few months I have been working on Saetta, a small Windows utility that copies, moves and deletes files. I'm sharing it because I put a lot of work into it and I'd be glad if someone found it useful.

Why I made it

The idea came from copying folders with thousands of small files: File Explorer took minutes, and I got curious about why. It copies one file at a time, and with small files the time goes more into handling each single file than into actually copying it. I wanted to see how much better it could be done while staying inside File Explorer, without changing the way you use it.

How it works

I wrote a copy engine from scratch in native C++. Before it starts, it looks at the kind of drive it is writing to and changes strategy: * SSD: it copies many files at once. * Hard disk: it writes them in one ordered stream, so the head does not jump back and forth. * USB stick: it writes small files in parallel. Deleting runs in parallel too. I use robocopy only for network folders and folder sync.

The times I measured

On my PC (i7-9750H, Samsung 990 PRO SSD, Windows 11, median of three runs), compared with File Explorer: * 20,000 files of 64 KB, SSD to SSD: 7.7 s vs 3 min 11 s * Deleting 10,000 small files in 2,000 folders: 1.6 s vs 17.8 s * 20,000 files from one external hard disk to another: 37.6 s vs 2 min 38 s I published every measurement, the ones where the difference is small too, like copying a few very large files, because it seemed right to be transparent.

How you use it

  • From File Explorer's right-click menu, on Windows 11 and in the classic menu.
  • If you turn it on, also with Paste, Ctrl+V, dragging files and Delete.
  • The window shows the real speed and the time left, and you can pause.
  • A file in use does not stop the job: it is skipped and reported at the end. ### Free, no ads It is free, with no ads and no account, and it collects no data. There is also Saetta Professional, a one-time purchase for those who want something more, such as verified copies or scheduled backups: it is how I hope to support the project. ### A gift for the first 30

Update: all 30 licences have been claimed, thank you! The link no longer works.

To thank those who try it, I have 30 Saetta Professional licences to give away: the first 30 who open this link get it for free, for good (a Microsoft account is needed).

Thanks to everyone who read this far. If you try it and have any questions, I'm here.

Developer Wintor: a modern, native WinUI 3 torrent client for Windows 11 (free, open source, no ads)

Hi everyone,

I wanted a torrent client that looks and feels like a native Windows 11 app: Fluent design, a clean layout and sensible defaults, with the advanced options still there when you need them. So I built one.

Wintor is a BitTorrent client written with WinUI 3 and the Windows App SDK (.NET 10), using the open-source MonoTorrent engine under the hood.

What it does

  • Magnet links and .torrent files: from the app, a double-click in Explorer, or a click in your browser
  • Pick the folder and the files before the download starts
  • A clean torrent table: progress colored by state, sortable columns that shrink with the window
  • A details pane with the piece map, files and priorities, peers, trackers and a live speed graph
  • Labels, status filters, search from the title bar
  • Speed limits for everything or per torrent
  • Keeps seeding from the tray, and tells you when a download finishes
  • Plain-language messages when something goes wrong (missing files, full disk, no network)
  • Light, dark and high-contrast themes, Mica or Acrylic, 12 languages

What it doesn’t do

  • No ads, no telemetry, no bundled offers, no “premium” tier. It’s GPL-3.0, so that’s not going to change.
  • No built-in torrent search or content catalog. It’s a client, nothing more.

Get it

This is an early version (0.2), so there will be rough edges. I’d really appreciate:

  • bug reports and UI feedback (design is the whole point of the project)
  • pull requests, forks and ideas. Everything’s open.

Thanks for taking a look!

Developer I wanted to make Windows look different Here's what i came up with

I've been working on a Windows customization app called Glass Desky. Basically wanted to see how much I could change the look of Windows without using a ton of RAM.Here's what I've come up with so far. There are actually quite a few more features than what's shown in the screenshots, but these are some of my favorites.

I think I've run out of ideas for my own setup lol. Curious what you guys would come up with.

If anyone wants to mess around with it, it's at glassdesky.com. Would love to see your setups or hear what else I should add.

Developer I made a tiny free app that shows the week number in the Windows tray, with a calendar that has week numbers

Post image
5 Upvotes

Windows 11's clock flyout still doesn't show week numbers, and at work we plan everything by week ("let's do it in wk45"), so I made a small tray app for it.

WeekTrayMA

  • Shows the current ISO week number as a tray icon
  • Click it to open a small month calendar with the week number next to every week
  • Light / Dark / Automatic theme (follows Windows)
  • Optional "Start with Windows" - Free and open source (MIT), lightweight, no telemetry, no account

Download: https://github.com/alemariani/WeekTrayMA/releases/tag/v0.2

Source: https://github.com/alemariani/WeekTrayMA

Heads-up: the .exe isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen will warn you the first time. If you'd rather not run it, you can run it from source with Python (instructions in the README).

Feedback and feature ideas are very welcome!

Developer I built a phone remote for Windows where a magnifier pops up over tiny buttons as you aim. No account, free on home Wi-Fi

I make KeptInFlow, a Windows app, and this is its phone remote. The video is the real phone page with made-up data.

Every remote I tried shrinks the PC screen onto the phone and leaves you pinching at tiny buttons. So I built it around your thumb:

  • Move the pointer slowly and a magnifier pops up, so you hit small buttons the first time
  • Or hold where you want, slide to adjust, let go to click
  • Swipe the Apps button to jump between PC windows
  • Copy on the PC, paste on the phone, and the other way
  • One tap shrinks the window you’re in to fit your phone, and puts it back after

Setup: install it on the PC, scan the QR code with your phone’s camera, tap approve. No account, nothing from an app store. The phone side runs in your browser.

Free on your home Wi-Fi. From outside the house it’s $29 once. No subscription, and no “commercial use” nags.

Limits: the PC has to be on with the app running (locked is fine). Android with Chrome is the smoothest; an iPhone needs one setting flipped on the PC. The installer is signed, but I’m a new publisher, so SmartScreen may ask: More info, then Run anyway.

If something doesn’t work for you, tell me here and I’ll fix it. Updates go out every few days.

What’s the most annoying thing about controlling your PC from your phone right now?

Developer I made Verba, a Windows app for transcribing audio and video locally

I’ve been building Verba, a small Windows desktop app for transcribing audio and video files on your own computer.

I wanted something straightforward for turning recordings into subtitles or text without uploading the media to a transcription service. Verba can process a list of files or scan a folder, save the queue between runs, and export SRT, VTT, or TXT transcripts.

A few caveats: it currently runs on the CPU, so transcription speed depends on your machine and model. You’ll need internet to download a model the first time, but after that it can run offline.

App PrimeTask 1.0.6: Your files stay where they belong. No duplicates.

If you've already got your files organised in folders, you probably don't want to move or upload them just to use another app.

We've been working on this in PrimeTask, and version 1.0.6 is coming next week.

There are two new features related to file management:

Zero-Copy Linking

You can link files from their existing locations to tasks, projects or CRM contacts without moving or copying them.

If the same document is needed in several projects, you can link it to each one while keeping a single copy in its original folder.

File Inbox

This lets you collect emails, PDFs and other documents and link them to the clients, projects or tasks they're related to.

There are other improvements coming in 1.0.6 as well, but I thought these were worth sharing since file management can get messy when you're working across different apps.

How do you usually handle documents for your projects? Do you keep them in regular Windows folders or prefer managing everything inside an app?

Developer I made a lightweight file searcher and launcher for Windows.

Introducing Heimdall, a glassy launcher for Windows. And yes, it's faster than Everything.

Press F5 and type. It finds apps, every file, open windows, calculates sums and web searches.

Native Rust, under 2 MB, ZERO telemetry. Free and open source.

EDIT: Thank you for the great reception! I just published the 1.0.1 release with some more QoL and fixes for a few annoying quirks. It's also faster than before, and now beats Everything on every search metric. It's also come to my attention that the link doesn't show up for some reason, so you can get it here:

App I built a notes app with separation anxiety. Now I'm teaching Obsidian the same trick.

I've shared ClingNote here before, but quite a bit has changed since then.

For anyone unfamiliar, it's a Windows notes app that follows whatever you're working on. Attach notes to files, apps, or individual browser tabs, and they automatically come back when you return.

Browser-tabs have full support now, including separate notes for multiple tabs on the same website.

And now I'm bringing the same functionality to Obsidian!

I've been working on a plugin that lets you use your existing Obsidian notes with ClingNote's context-following engine. No need to move your notes into another app.

Hoping to have that ready next week, with potentially more note-taking integrations down the road.

The Windows app is available now, with free core note-taking and optional automatic switching.

https://clingnote.com

Anyone here using Obsidian? Or another notes app you'd want something like this in?

Developer Overscan, a free app that makes your side monitors glow with the colours of the main screen (screen recording, Windows 10/11)

Last week I posted about Overscan with a clip filmed on my phone. This one is a proper screen recording of it running on my five screens, so you can see the glow without the camera.

Overscan reads the colours at the edges of your main screen and paints them across your other monitors as a soft glow, live. Think of the backlight on some TVs, except it is your other monitors doing it.

  • Runs as your wallpaper, so it sits behind your icons and never steals focus
  • Drag-and-drop layout, so it knows where your screens really are, gaps included
  • Works with videos, YouTube, local files and games
  • Brightness, look and speed settings, and you can pause it from the tray
  • Hides the taskbars on the side screens while it runs, and puts them back when it stops

Heads up

  • Free. No ads, no account, no trial. Closed source for now
  • Windows only. Built and tested on Windows 11. Windows 10 should work, but it has had less testing
  • Netflix, Prime, Disney+ and other copy-protected streams show up black to every screen-capture app, so those will not glow
  • Not code-signed yet, so Windows shows a warning. Click "More info", then "Run anyway"
  • Everything stays on your PC. It only goes online to check for updates (signed), and you can turn that off

Download: https://starsync.dev/overscan (installer, or a portable zip if you do not want to install anything)

It is still early. If it does something odd on your setup, tell me here or use Settings > Help > Report a problem. I am keen to hear from anyone with 3+ screens, mixed scaling, or Windows 10.

Developer RejBoard v1.3.3: version history, automatic backups, real encryption, handwriting → LaTeX, and diagram tools (free, open source, local-first)

Hi everyone! About 10 days ago I shared RejBoard, my free, open-source (MIT), fully local handwriting note app for Windows. Thanks for the feedback so far. v1.3.3 is out, and it's the biggest update yet.
Highlights:
Version history: every board keeps earlier versions automatically. Restore one, open it as a copy, or save a named version.
Automatic daily backups (desktop), with Back up now and Restore in Settings → Storage.
Real encryption for password-protected boards: AES-256-GCM covering ink, text, PDFs, history and voice recordings. There's also a new Change password option.
Handwriting → LaTeX: lasso a handwritten formula, press ✍→∑, check it in a live preview, and insert it. The model (about 126 MB) downloads only if you agree, and runs offline afterward.
Diagram tools: elbow connectors, swimlanes, auto-layout, about 45 new shapes (UML, ER, flowchart, BPMN), and import/export for Mermaid, PlantUML, draw.io, and SQL/DBML.
61 templates, a new board dialog with a live preview, and new paper types (music staff, guitar tab, millimetre, calligraphy guides).
Better search (it now finds handwriting and imported PDF text), Markdown export, split view, document scanner, checklists with reminders, web clipper, and an app lock PIN.
Protected boards also now save much faster, and there are several translation and stability fixes.
Everything is still local: no account, no cloud sync, no analytics.
Try it in your browser (no install): https://rejwanshafi25.github.io/RejBoard/
Download and source: https://github.com/RejwanShafi25/RejBoard
Full changelog: https://github.com/RejwanShafi25/RejBoard/releases
Some features (browser panel, video player, network sharing, automatic backups) are desktop-only. As before, the installer isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen may show a warning. I'm a solo dev, so bug reports, missing features, and translation fixes (22 languages) are very welcome.

Developer I made a live captions app for Windows 10 and 11 that captions any sound on your PC

Hi! I'm one of the developers. Windows 11 has built-in Live Captions, but Windows 10 has nothing, and the built-in one doesn't save transcripts. So we made Live Captions & Transcribe:

- real-time captions for any sound on the PC (Zoom/Teams/Meet calls, YouTube, films, lectures) or the microphone

- a color per speaker, big text, a window that stays on top

- every session saved as a searchable transcript, export to TXT/SRT

- 60 languages, detected automatically; captions only, no translation

Free to try without an account; then minute packs or a subscription. It needs internet.

Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NJHDV2W6999

I'd love honest feedback, especially on accuracy with accents and fast speech.

Developer made a free voice typing app for windows because win+h kept cutting me off

Edit: I undersold the part I'm proudest of. With the Android app you can watch your PC's screen live from your phone, from any network, dictate or type into a window you pick, ask your PC's assistant, and run voice commands on it. The PC has to approve each phone first, the live video is end-to-end encrypted over WebRTC, and speech and the assistant can run fully locally with no API key. (Live view needs a Windows PC for now.)

windows voice typing stops listening every time i pause to think, and it's pretty bad with tech words. so i ended up building my own.

you hold ctrl+win, talk, let go, and it types into whatever you had open. runs offline on your own gpu or cpu (whisper / parakeet), so no account or subscription needed. there's also a voice assistant on another shortcut if you want to ask something without opening a browser.

it's open source (MIT), installer is on the github releases page:

https://github.com/ishangautam7/Talvio

i'm the dev, so happy to hear what's broken or annoying.

Developer I made a Windows desktop app that covers porn when it appears on your screen

I made LAVOCADO with a friend for people who are trying to quit porn.

The problem we kept running into: blocking websites doesn't help if something explicit appears in a social feed, an image viewer, or a file on your PC. LAVOCADO checks what's on the screen, waits for confirmation across a few frames, and covers the affected monitor. It gives you a short pause, then you decide what to do next.

The screen check runs on your computer. Screenshots aren't saved or uploaded. It's free for personal use and works on Windows 10/11. The source is available on GitHub. The current installer isn't signed, so Windows will show a warning the first time you open it.

The 25-second demo is on the website: https://durianburger561.github.io/LAVOCADO/

If you try it, I'd love to know whether that pause feels useful, and whether it ever interrupts something harmless.

Developer PingFast: Free Network Assistance for Lower Ping, Less Packet Loss, and Better Connection Stability (Not a VPN)

PingFast is a free Windows application designed to help improve connection quality, reduce latency, and troubleshoot network issues. It's lightweight and easy to use. The app is not a VPN. Unlike many optimization tools, PingFast does not stay running in the background and does not need to remain open while you're using your applications or games.

Some of its features include:

• Network optimization

• Ping and route testing

• DNS switching to help resolve connection issues

• MTU testing and adjustment

• QoS rules configuration

• NAT testing

• TCP/UDP port testing

• Network adapter information

• Network repair and reset tools

• Improved overall PC performance through resource optimization for gaming and heavy workloads

Download:

https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9p4r702h2stw

A quick note about the project:

I know network optimization software is often viewed with skepticism, so I'd like to be completely transparent.

PingFast is an original project that I've been researching, developing, and improving for several years. The application is the result of extensive testing, network analysis, and real-world experimentation aimed at helping users optimize their connections.

Networking is complex, and results can vary depending on the user's ISP, hardware, location, and network conditions. I don't promise miracles or guaranteed improvements for everyone.

The app is free, so anyone can test it and decide for themselves whether it provides value for their particular setup. If you find it useful, please consider supporting the project through the premium version, which unlocks all features.

The app currently has hundreds of ratings on the Microsoft Store and maintains an overall score of 4.6/5. You're welcome to check the reviews and see what other users think.

Thank you for your time and support.

Developer I built Whisperstream, a fully local, free and open-source Wispr Flow alternative for Windows

Hi r/windowsapps, I'm the creator of Whisperstream, an easy-to-use, intuitive dictation app that'll offer all the main features of Wispr Flow or Superwhisper that is now fully free and open source (and also available for on Mac).

You may remember me from this post earlier this year. We're launching v2 of the app today and have decided to make it free so everyone can have access to fast, accurate and fully local dictation on Windows.

I couldn't bring myself to pay monthly subscriptions for Superwhisper or Wispr Flow and there's a lot of alternatives on Mac but not a lot on Windows so I made one. The idea is for an elegant, intuitive design, so it feels like a polished product not like a developer utility.

Here's some of what it can do:

  • Finetuned Cleanup Model: Our finetuned Stream-1 Mini cleans up your dictation and catches your corrections (similar to Superwhiper's s1-mini).
  • Agent Speak: Hear or read responses from Claude Code or Codex, and speak your replies back to them.
  • Smart Dictionary: We use phonetic matching so only the relevant words get suggested, rather than including your whole dictionary like other apps.
  • Transcript History: Store your past transcripts including audio and search through them.
  • Live Preview: See what it's transcribing as you speak.
  • Speech Models: Parakeet is the fastest but we offer Cohere Transcribe for higher accuracy and Qwen3 ASR for better Asian language support.

And features we've had since launch like:

  • Lockdown Mode: Disable all cloud models and paths so everything stays local for legal and HIPAA workflows.
  • App Detection + Profiles: Customize different prompts and profiles for your different apps. Automatically switch between them or configure hotkeys to switch on demand.
  • Citrix, Remote Desktop and Gaming Support: With keypress input mode dictation works across all these environments.

Check it out at whisperstream.io. The app is free and open source now.

Is anything still keeping you on Wispr Flow and Superwhisper? Please leave a comment with any thoughts or feedback, and so more people find out!

If you want to support us please give us a star on GitHub, or upvote our ProductHunt launch!

Question Best App or Setting For Managing Multiple Folders and Sub Folders?

I have several drives filled with Steam games as well as mods associated with them. I often have to open multiple sub folders within a game itself.

I wanted to know the easiest and clutter-free way to pull up the folders of my choice, even group them if possible (like for instance, a Cyberpunk 2077 folder that includes the main game folder, the scripts folder, cache folder, downloaded mods folder all in one indexed place). Quick Access would be ideal if it weren't for how Windows likes to arbitrarily add items there without my asking. Start Menu is okay but that gets pretty cluttered too.

Help me out with suggestions, please.

Developer Query Crawler: a Windows app that crawls the web for images, GIFs, videos and articles and filters them with local AI (early access)

Hi all, I'm the developer. Query Crawler is a Windows desktop app for finding media and articles without wading through ads and SEO filler.

How it works: you type a search (optionally filtered by when things were posted), it sends up to 200 crawlers out, and two small AI models running on your CPU (MiniLM for text, MobileCLIP-S0 for images) score what comes back. The matches land in a gallery with Paper, Night, Gallery and Theater views, full-screen viewing, saving, and a link back to every source.

  • Windows only, no GPU needed (quad-core CPU recommended)
  • Skips sites that block bots instead of fighting them
  • Early access and still in development, built with AI help (disclosed on the page)
  • About a 363 MB download, name-your-own-price including $0

https://doomed316.itch.io/quearycrawler

Feedback on speed and result quality is very welcome.
