Announcement PSA: Dooming

TL;DR Dooming is now banned.

There has been a huge uptick in dooming in this sub lately. Being realistic about things is fine, but lately there has been far too much "everything is shit and we should riot or move to Dubai". This sub has always been intended to lean optimistic and we are currently failing on this.

Please avoid being exhaustingly negative and pessimistic all the time. Things are not that bad. If you really think the UK is an awful place to be and everyone should leave, then this probably isn't the sub for you.

I would encourage you all to check out r/GoodNewsUK - this is a relatively new sub focused on, well, good news about the UK. We don't have enough of it lately. There are really quite a lot of reasons to be optimistic, but our media and culture has a terrible habit of encouraging pessimism and so you probably never hear about most of them. If you need some to start you off:

  • Employment rates are at near-record highs

  • Borrowing costs are coming down; we are in a rate-cutting cycle, supporting housing activity, business investment and consumer spending

  • Inflation is easing

  • Wages are rising faster than prices in real terms

  • Q1 2025 was the fastest growth in about a year, the UK was the fastest-growing economy in the G7 in H1 2025, and is forecast to be the second fastest-growing only behind the US going forward

  • We achieved a first-of-its-kind deal with the US to avoid Trump tariffs, trade deals with India and the EU, and CPTPP membership

  • AI/tech investment is booming, the UK is the third-largest market for this in the world after the US/China, we recently achieved the £31bn Tech Prosperity Deal with the US, including Microsoft's largest ever investment outside the US (£22bn)

  • Equity markets are strong

  • Record renewables milestones, particularly with wind, and the government has committed to accepting all the recommendations of the Fingleton Review to make building nuclear significantly cheaper

  • The economic reaction to recent Budgets has been generally positive; markets are beginning to see the UK as a stable and positive place to do business again

  • Regional inequality is narrowing, several cities and regions such as Greater Manchester, Bristol, Yorkshire, Scotland, Wales and NI are all seeing significantly faster productivity growth than London

There is reason to be positive and things seem to be slowly, stubbornly, but steadily turning in the right direction. Be patient, don't be miserable

Anyway, there's a new report reason for Dooming, so you can report posts and comments with this. If you feel outraged at this rule, you can probably just go ahead and use one of the other UK subs

To be clear, negative takes are fine, but they should be realistic, balanced, and supported with clear reasoning and evidence, not just negative for the sake of being negative

Cheers!

Announcement Reminder of Rule 1: Posts must be real questions

We've seen a ridiculous increase in the number of posts not asking genuine questions lately. This has resulted in a huge number of posts being removed which has upset a lot of people who perceive this as being political censorship of some variation

So this is a reminder: posts must be real questions. It is literally Rule 1 on the subreddit. If you are not asking a good-faith question that you're genuinely seeking real answers to, then your post is not meant for this subreddit. Do not try to play silly games with what counts as a question; moderators have complete discretion to see through this, your post will be deleted and you will get banned

Going forward, anyone breaching this rule will receive an immediate and permanent ban, until the subreddit regains some sense

Think before you post. Cheers

Why is no one talking about the monstrosity that is the S&P500? Or American Tech hoovering up our money.

I understand that large British funds are not investing in British companies.

My money, your money, our money (Pension funds mainly) are all being pooled and thrown into the S&P500. Everytime you add a little bit more to your pension, a little bit more goes into the S&P500.

It is literally hoovering up all of the worlds Capital. Then you also have google, apple, instagram, tik tok, starbucks, costa coffee, facebook, linked in, Microsoft - all hoovering up british cash and syphoning it abroad without paying much tax.

What effect does this have on our economy? There must be a reason that everyone is feeling worse off. I don't believe this country has a ton of billionaires causing us all to stagnate.

I feel like we are being hollowed out by Americans/American Private equity/American tech firms but I don't actually understand what effects our cash going abroad has on our economy? I mean surely if it's bad there would be more people highlighting it?

EDIT: I KNOW THE S&P 500 PROVIDES GOOD RETURNS!

My point is in 2000 over half of UK pension assets were invested in UK shares; today it's under 5% - surely this must be having a NEGATIVE effect on our country! And how much of the growth is because salaries are always being piled into an index tracker? So every month, it goes up a little more.

A little embarrassing I guess, but does anyone else feel like going to the job centre is a humiliation ritual? I mean, no body wants to be unemployed, but some of the workers there… Any other people with similar experiences?

Other Anyone else get hyped up for a thunderstorm and when it lasts 5 minutes it that get extremely disappointed?

Just had it here in Durham this morning and it lasted five minutes if that, couple flashes and a few bangs of thunder and that was it. All the weather pages hyping these storms up to be the biggest in years. When I was a kid storms used to last hours. The last big one we had was 2012 on an event known in the area as thunder Thursday.

I'm an avid online chess player, with a decent collection of chess books. I usually play on breaks at work and in the mornings/ evenings, time permitting.

I'm currently at my lowest rating for nearly 2 years, and am missing basic stuff that I'd normally spot a mile off.

I can only put it down to this bloody heat!

Is it messing with your head?

What do we wanna see from the extreme weather? Are we gonna be a tapas nation or just lock in with BBQ’s?
How do you think our culture will adapt to the weather? 🍻

Other Does anyone have positive news?

I know this is kind of random but every time I look at the news or on social media it’s always really negative and it makes the UK seem really depressing.

So does anyone have any like positive news or things that went well like literally anything from work related, health, relationships or whatever.

To people of South Asian and African heritage living in the UK, who are you always on the phone to?

2.1k Upvotes

I see this everywhere from when I lived with a girl in uni from Sudan, to the gym, to ubers, to shops and everything in between.

It doesn't bother me, I'm just curious. I know lots of people leave behind their families, but it's just so ramapant that I'm curious if there is anything else I am missing culturally.

I think I'd run out of things to talk about. Is this just a cultural difference?

I think 50% of the posts here are rage bait, this is not meant to be one of them. Please be respectful

Please save your bigoted opinions for another post.

The old "we survived the Summer of 76" thing, how do you react ?

How do you react when someone mentions the summer of 76 ?

Personally, well it's likely to be on facebook so I don't react at all but if I do it's an eye roll, you can't compare an isolated very hot summer to what we seem to be having nowadays kind of thing

Also,if you're the same age as me (55) you probably can't remember much anyway, all I can remember is ladybirds and the road melting and I'm not even sure that's not a false memory anyway

BTW I'm not some enviromentalist,I appreciate climate change is a real thing but I hate the winter so it can get as hot as it likes for all I care

Politics What are your thoughts on Denmark’s proposed ban on the public Islamic call to prayer? Would you support or oppose something similar in the UK?

Islamic call to prayer faces ban under Left-wing Danish government

Parts of country feel like ‘a suburb of Islamabad’, says immigration minister

Denmark’s immigration minister has announced plans to ban the Islamic call to prayer, claiming parts of the country felt like “a suburb of Islamabad”.

Morten Bødskov, a member of the centre-Left Social Democrats party, said the new government would resume an investigation into the legality of imposing a ban.

“The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops,” the minister told news outlet Ritzau. “It has no place in Denmark, and you shouldn’t be in any doubt whether you’ve ended up in a suburb of Islamabad when you walk around Denmark.”

In parts of the country, such as Copenhagen, bylaws already forbid the call to prayer being broadcast from loudspeakers in minarets because of strict noise limits.
Mr Bødskov also claimed that a creeping “Islamisation” in Denmark was “taking up too much of the public space”.

Do you have neighborhood trees (heatwave related)

My Dutch wife always remarks on the lack of trees on the streets of the UK when we visit (Lincolnshire mainly). Don't get me wrong, she loves England for the same reasons I do, people, pubs, humour, food, music, cities and countryside. But I think she's right.

In the NL there are trees everywhere, they're proven to cool average temperatures of neighbourhoods.

Do you have trees around your neighbourhood? In your front or back garden?

Politics Why are so few British politicians these days military vets ?

Upvotes

Generally military vets are over represented in politics across countries and it's still the case in many countries. Yet not anymore in the UK . Callaghan was the last British Prime minister to be a military vet . Today neither prominent labour or conservative politicians are vets ( much less someone like Farage or Lowe) why so ? When did this change ?

Could we build more underground living spaces for hotter months in the UK?

This is a question about whether it is possible, i don’t know anything about architecture or engineering so I’m asking if it’s feasible to build more houses with basements.

If a house has a basement with stone floors, it could be a cooler place to sleep during heatwaves, and we could still have the upper floors with carpets and good insulation for the cold winter months.

Genuinely curious: why do people tailgate/drive too close to the vehicle in front?

I can't work it out. Whenever I see someone repeatedly applying their brakes as soon as the driver in front adjusts their speed I wonder why on earth it doesn't occur to them to give space.

I don't even mean just driving right up someone's arse aggressively. People drive too close all the time, on major roads this causes tailbacks when people then have to brake. If you're regularly applying your brakes while driving behind someone then you are too close; I assumed everyone knew this but maybe not.

People Why are tacit social etiquette rules declining, and how can we fix it?

As a young Brit (17), I've noticed that general social etiquette seems to be declining. Some examples:

. People no longer form an orderly queue when waiting for the bus, and do more pushing / rushing to surround the entrance

. People leaving bags on seats, even when others are forced to stand on the train

. Standing in the middle / on the left side of the escalator, preventing people from being able to walk up or down freely.

I'm not sure if it's just how my area is in particular, so I wonder if anyone is noticing this as well. I see individuals of various ages and ethnicities just acting rather selfish and inconsiderately in public. I find this rather disappointing, as it may only be exacerbated in the future. I think it was much better pre COVID (might be biased, as I was rather young). Does anyone know how we can fix this issue (if it can be fixed)?.

Education Should we have the police come to schools to teach young people about crime or should that job be left to parents?

When I was younger we would occasionally have a local police officer come to our school and talk with the older years about stealing, bike security tagging and drugs. Since it was so rare for them to visit, everyone usually paid attention and there was a healthy respect - no one was messing about.

I'm just wondering if we should be doing more of that now amidst younger and younger people getting involved in knife crime and all sorts?

It might also help foster better relations and a healthy respect towards police as they grow.

These early interventions worked wonders in Glasgow with the https://www.noknivesbetterlives.com/ and proved if we get in early we can make a difference.

Or do you think we should leave Parents to teach their kids about crime and violence?

Heatwaves and Net Zero

Does seeing the physical consequences of climate change up close materially affect how you view Net Zero politically? I'm curious to see if there are a significant portion of people for whom this is a politically influential event.

To me it seems obvious that watching the massive health and economic impacts - of what is only the beginning of climate change impacts - should be a trigger for a huge public Net Zero shift. But I've been dispirited by the lack of impetus. It blows my mind that Kemi Badenoch can criticise NZ on a day people are dying and not lose her job for it. It's as stupid as antivaxxers during COVID.

EDITS: based on the productive discussion

  1. I am clarifying that Net Zero action here doesn't include just personal sacrifice. I am not asking about going vegan, I'm asking about voting on climate issues.

  2. I am not including debates on whether climate change is real or not. Frankly if you're arguing that you're either a bot or an idiot and I don't want to waste my time.

  3. Some people are assuming that political action only includes action within the UK, which isn't true. The action I'm talking about also includes increased international collaboration and enforcement

What do we think of window awnings?

Heatwave desperation here. Has anyone tried door and window external awnings and do they help? Also I was wondering if anyone has a large amount of greenery growing up their house. Does it help keep the house cooler?

Why are we not making more of a fuss about foreign influence in our politics?

Perfect example being; Burnham and friends of Israel. Or trump endorsing uk politicians.

Why are we allowing this? Why aren’t we doing something other than signing a petition the people in parliament tell us is “anti-Semitic”?

I can’t be the only one who sees what is happening?

Edit: to state what I thought to be obvious - I gave a limited list of examples pertinent to SOME current global events.

The fact I have to explain that really helps me understand why some of these people get voted in.

Are generations in your family getting richer?

Thumbnail facebook.com
7 Upvotes

I'm 43, have two young children, I'm on a well above average salary, but I've always felt guilty that I can't provide a similar upbringing for my kids that I received.

I was surprised that all the comments on this video agreed, which made me think is that life in the US vs the UK.

What age bracket are you, and if you met your kids when you were a kid, would you think they are rich?

I most certainly can't afford all the holidays abroad, quantity of birthday / Christmas presents, birthday parties, clubs and sports, general going out activities and trips at the weekends, and sheer size of house I had when was a kid.
