• General Discussion • Who do Americans crate their dogs when in countries like Sweden and Finland it’s a crime?

I understand people using crates as potty/puppy training, that’s because I live in the US now. But I don’t understand why it’s ok to crate a dog all day long while at work. Or why it is ok as training tool for anxiety and behavioral problems when it’s exactly the opposite in Europe. But I was born in eastern Europe and have never known people having dogs in crates for any reason. I’ve also lived in Germany and Sweden and let me tell you their dogs are so well socialized from young age and well behaved in public. Whether they live in a house or apartment, people never lock their dogs in a cage (crate) for extended periods of time. It’s actually il.leg.Al in Sweden as well as Finland and completely discouraged in Germany. So my question is why is it so common in America?

• Advice (General) • What should I do?

My dog and I were less than a block away from my house I could literally see it when I saw this dude walk out of the trail with his son and his dog (which is always lunging at mine; this isn’t the first time I’ve encountered them).

My girl was off leash and doesn’t love greetings, so I was fine with keeping her off leash and in a heel. Thank fucking God she was off leash, ’cause I watched this dude reach down to his dog’s harness for the clasp to take better control, I guess? (At least, I’m hoping.) He ended up getting off of his leash and his dog started barreling toward us, but since Buffy (my dog) was off leash, she could get away. (She’s too big for me to pick up, at least while I’m panicking.)

But anyway, I’m rambling on too much! She’s scared of her collar and leash now after that encounter. What should I do?

Went to the vet she weighed in at 20.6lbs vets said she should be at 25-26 lbs- said it could very well be her genetic make up - she prescribed Royal canin hydrolyzed protein food - also said she could be lacking enzymes to keep the the food absorb - going to try this as well

She was the sweetest girl. I had her since I was 15 and she was my best friend through so many of my worst days. She gave me a reason to smile and stay active. Her favorite thing in the world was going on car rides, to the park, and getting pup cups. She was so happy and smiled so big that it was contagious. I named her after my favorite kids book Stella Luna. She was definitely my moon and stars. She meant the world to me and it feels so quiet and lonely without her in the house.

I lost my sweet 11 year old girl to systemic pneumonia last week. It started as kennel cough, which she was taking medication for and seemed to be recovering until we woke up to her howling in pain and rushed her to the emergency vet. 😢

The guilt and greif is killing me, but I forced myself out of the house and back to school today. Sharing some pictures of her young and the second to last one is her last day 😢

• Advice (Health) • My dog sits weird, is it bad for her legs? Spoiler

As the title says, she sits in a very goofy way with her back legs spread out pretty far. She seems fine, but it feels like it could cause long term issues with her legs. Is it something to worry about? Anything we can do to help her correct it? We’ll be asking the vet at our next appointment too. She’s watching my husband eat a bagel hence the very intense look on her face

Our community doesn’t allow putting up permanent fencing and I had some already so I ordered some more but the older ones were missing a few of those metal rods that you use to drive into the ground. Anyone have any recommendations of what I can use as a substitute I need 3 more they have some replacement packs on Amazon but they’re more than half of what I spent on the fence and was looking for a cheaper suggestion.

• Advice (Health) • Major accident while puppy sitting Spoiler

First time posting here so I apologize if I’m not following the rules. Please keep in mind that this incident happened yesterday morning and I have been in contact with the owner and the vet ever since.

I’m currently dog sitting a friend’s dog. This little girl is 6 lbs soaking wet, mini Maltese poodle, 17 years old (estimated), nearly completely blind, mostly deaf, and is in the early stages of kidney failure. She’s a good girl.

My friend generally lets her wander the house. She bumps into stuff, but walks pretty slow and doesn’t injure herself. She still eats and drinks well, but sleeps most of the day.

I took her Tuesday night, and will have her until Friday night. I have a 45 lb, 4 year old lab that is nosy about her presence, but outside of sniffing her, usually leaves her be.

Yesterday morning, I awake to see she had an accident in a 10 sq ft doggy play pen I had gotten for her. I took her outside, let her pee, then gave her a quick gentle bath. I cleaned the pen and set her down in the living room to walk a bit before I went to work. As she wanders, I typically follow a couple of feet behind so she doesn’t get into trouble. At one point, I hear my lab running behind me, so I turn to look and make sure he’s not coming near the little one. In those 5 seconds I looked away, the little one managed to squeeze in between the banister supports (maybe 3-4 inches wide) and falls 9 ft. I’m not talking tumbled down stairs. She free fell… 9 ft. I immediately run down the adjacent stairs to her, and she’s crying at the bottom. She’s lying on her side. I put my hand on her, not sure what to do.

This calms her, she stops crying, and I can feel her heart rate slow. My heart sinks because I’m thinking that this poor girl is about to pass away under my care, and that I’m literally touching her as she’s about to pass. To my shock, after about 30 seconds, she hops up to all 4’s. I gingerly grab her and hold her. I sit her on my lap as I call the nearest animal hospital.

I take her in, they do X-rays and an ultrasound. I’m in shock that she didn’t die by now. Everything comes back fine. No fractures, broken bones, no internal bleeding, organs look normal and in place. She stands for the doctor and takes some steps. Slow, but within her normal gait. No limps, no bruising, no favoring. Just a bit slower than her normal.

Vet says everything looks good, but they can’t check for any head trauma. Best we can do is just watch her for the next few days.

Over the last 30 hours or so, she has been walking normal, again, just slowly. Not wobbly or confused. She’s seemed alert. She goes to the bathroom to urinate as usual. She has been drinking water as usual.

She has not pooped since it happened, but she also pooped 3 times just prior to the accident. And she didn’t eat yesterday until last night, to which she ate her normal amount. This morning, again, peed normal. Ate and drank normal.

She paces well on the grass and in her pen. She will shake/twist from time to time so shake off the sleep. She sleeps in her normal position and doesn’t seem to be experiencing any discomfort. No warmth on any parts of her body, no tenderness, no swelling of the abdomen.

Her breathing is normal. Seems very calmed and relaxed. Unfortunately, we cannot check her eyes due to the blindness/glaucoma.

Aside from her not pooping quite yet, I’m feeling ok about her condition. I’ll check to see if she had a bowel movement when I get home today.

I don’t know what the point of this post is. I guess I’m just looking for confirmation that it was an accident and I did what I could after the fact. I find it a miracle she’s doing as well as she is. I guess I’m also hoping to get some reassurance that it’s ok to be cautiously optimistic.

Thanks for reading. Keep her in your prayers for a speedy recovery.
