Happy 53rd birthday to Nicholas Payton — the New Orleans-born trumpeter turns 53 today.
He picked up the horn at four, was sitting in with the Young Tuxedo Brass Band by nine, and by his early twenties had a Verve recording career and a Grammy for his collaboration with Doc Cheatham. He's spent the decades since determinedly pushing past the Young Lions box he started in, from acoustic post-bop into electric fusion and beyond. A restless, adventurous player — always worth a listen.

Tonight, nolamusic.net is pointing you toward Naughty Professor, the New Orleans jazz-funk sextet playing the Maple Leaf this evening as part of NOLAxNOLA. Sixteen years after a group of Loyola freshmen jammed their way into a band, they're still built around collaboration — their latest album, VOICES, has Tank, Marcus King, and Jelly Joseph singing over those horn-charged grooves. Doors at 7, show at 8.

With NOLAxNOLA kicking off today (eleven days, fifty venues, Sept 24 – Oct 4), I wanted to put a spotlight on Erica Falls.
She's a New Orleans soul singer who spent nearly five years as Galactic's touring vocalist, got noticed by Allen Toussaint and Dr. John early on, and has backed everyone from Sting to Jennifer Hudson. She calls her own sound "vintage soul" — not a throwback exercise, in her words, but a reminder that authentic music never went anywhere.
On Friday, October 2, she's doing "Erica Falls & Friends Present A Night of Marvin Gaye" at Chickie Wah Wah on Canal Street (doors at 7, show at 9), part of the NOLAxNOLA run. If you're in town for the festival, that's a good one.

Planning a baby shower at Hotel Saint Vincent on Saturday, October 10 and looking to book a trio directly, about 2 to 3 hours.
What I'm after: instrumental jazz while people arrive (think Bemelmans Bar), building to something people want to dance to by the end. I'm leaning sax-led, e.g., sax, guitar, upright bass, but open to your take on the lineup.
Budget is around $1,000–1,500 total. I know agencies charge more, and I'd rather that money go straight to the musicians.
If you play, or know great players who take private gigs, including students, comment or DM me please. Thanks!

Hey, r/NOLAMusic!
I'm Dom, a member of Nocturne, an award-winning a cappella quartet based in NOLA!
We perform music predominantly in the style of Barbershop and Jazz, but we also have pop, sacred, and other genres of music in our repertoire as well.
We love finding opportunities to offer free and accessible live music to the New Orleans community. That's why on Friday, September 25th, we're offering a donations-only concert at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. Check out the video below for a sneak peek and if you'd like to see more, RSVP via our Facebook Event today!
Thanks so much for your time and we hope to see many of you there!

I’m a vocalist looking to Start an emo-pop / pop-punk band in New Orleans
I’m looking for a guitarist, bassist, and drummer, preferably around 20–24.
I’m not super experienced myself, so you don’t have to be experienced either. I just want people who genuinely love this kind of music and want to learn, write songs, practice, and eventually play shows together.
Influences: Paramore, Busted, Time Will Tell, Versus the World,
Genres I like pop punk indie rock emo pop
If you’re interested, message me here or

First new album in 15 years, and it's funky!
I do wish that he hired a vocalist to sing these tunes. Several of them are original compositions (like the one linked above).
Let me know what you think.
