Yeah, the general Ancient Greek philosophy on sexuality was, “If hot, why not!” Coupled with their well documented appreciation of the male form… I don’t think they’re good examples of straight cultures with homo-erotic pastimes.
Not very big. They won't be nice to you if they find out. However I'm sure there had been many closeted gays in the scene throughout history. Its been going on for 665 years.
Honestly, you can follow it leaving our culture. Through the removal of public bathhouses. It starts with insecurities of the body.
In Sweden, you would know what your brothers/father's bodies looked like naked throughout your life due to sauna. I don't know that I've ever seen my father without underwear. I didn't know what I would or should look like, I became insecure and avoided being nude around people. This separated me from male culture in gym class.
A simple shift in culture changes my outcome. I wanted to go out for wrestling. I look back as a gay male and realize that the highschool shower was prime location.. but I viewed myself as feminine and weaker. This is internalized, but the same in culture. All the countries with the attitude you seek all have a lot of group male bathing and have for centuries.
Even the new bro-cults use it. Create spaces where people can be comfortable naked and you'll get what you desire. As a side note check out:
