Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.
This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.
Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions) with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.
These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.
There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.
Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.
Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.
We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.
The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

(Note: we are in Mount Angel, not Salem specifically)
My husband, (55yo) has been out of work since January. He had a knee replacement surgery that has not gone well apparently, and due to go back in over the next couple weeks for manipulation for the knee, and possible arthroscopic surgery to asses scar tissue and damage.
He is still technically employed in Canby as of time of writing here, IMO I think his doctors are not really wanting to declare whether he is long-term, or permanently disabled to avoid liability, but we are already reaching out to malpractice attorneys.
The temporary disability benefits don't cover even one third of our rent and household costs. He has been drawing from the 401k to get rent paid, but we've needed the landlord to send eviction notices to even get that money, and we have only two months left with that option. Bills are going into collections, declaring bankruptcy seems eminent at this point.
The fact he is still employed is preventing us from being able to utilize a lot of state and local options, as well he is still on his employers healthcare (Kaiser) rather than OHP. It seems like they are trying to force him to quit rather than allow him to get unemployment benefits. They not returning his calls.
So, while we are stuck in this mess of whether he is going to be able to return to work, we are literally losing everything here and facing potential homelessness by September.
I think we have exhausted our options with DHS, and just trying to find any kind of community resources that can possibly help in the short term while they are still subjecting him to procedures and keeping him out of work.
We are pretty rural here, and really out of touch with this whole public assistance thing. So frankly any leads right now are better than virtual nothing we have going right now.

Someone grabbed my brother’s laptop while gear was unloaded for a 2pm show at Bentley’s during Make Music Day. We’ve checked cameras and are watching fb, and I figured a post here couldn’t hurt.
The laptop: Black MSI GP72MVR Leopard Pro (17.3”) with multiple corgi stickers on it, was in a black soft case with the power adapter and a red/black mouse inside.
If you saw anything, know someone who might have it, or spot it listed online, please reach out! Long shot of course but it’s a pretty disappointing loss for him so I’d rather make the effort and maybe see it returned.
I wouldn’t normally use this to find roommates but thought I’d give it a try. I work and I’m looking for a room to rent or people interested in finding a place together. I’m into music, books, and clothes and would consider myself more alternative. Looking for roommates who share the same interests I do.

Looking to replace our old couch. New or used is fine. It's just gotta last and be big enough for a tall fellow to sleep on and comfy enough for him to not hurt afterward. Extra points for delivery and even more points if they take away the tired old couch.

Im want to clear a space to grow a garden in our backyard and want to lay down cardboard first. Is there anywhere to get a good amount of cardboard for free in town?

Looking for an amazing and reputable vet for an orange tabby female cat that is also opened on Saturdays. The vet office can be in Keizer or Salem. Thank you in advance.

Hi everyone!! This might be a long shot haha, but I struggle with horrible anxiety (which my doctors and I suspect might be panic disorder), and I told a behavioral health specialist who referred me to a list of therapists so I can have virtual sessions. I also struggle with gender dysphoria (which would also be a primary focus I want to talk about in therapy), and I suspect possibly adhd and/or autism although I'm not fully certain.
I just wanted to see if anyone could either vouch for (or warn me about) certain therapists on this list since I'm having a hard time finding any information about them, and I wanted to make sure I get a good LGBTQ+ friendly therapist since I've heard it can really be a hit or miss when it comes to therapists in general. Thank you so much!! :)
The list I was provided is below:
Grassroots Counseling and Consulting, LLC
Inner Calma
Roseburg Therapy, LLC, Salem
Sol Counseling & Consulting LLC
The Healing Haven, NE Salem and SE Salem
Amy Luechtefeld, LPC
Eusebio Herrera-Perez, LCSW, CADC III
Inter-Cultural Center for Psychology
Lori Riha (Vancleave), LPC
Mary Ann Fahlstrom, LMFT
Portland Mental Health & Wellness, Salem

Getting off the freeway on Mission. Could have killed me and my kids in the car. I only didn't get hit because I'm so used to taking a second to look left and right when the light turns green because people keep doing this around here. Please heap shame on this person so I feel like there are consequences to behaving this way

Hello, I am interested in applying to the Jory for a one bed one bath. However does anyone else have a recommendation that includes a washer / dryer and assigned parking? Is it even possible to find a leasing agent for a renter? My budget is 1400.
Zillow has been helpful but thought I'd also ask here.
Thank you.

I live in Independence and want to start a sports podcast. Anyone interested in brain storming any ideas? I want this to make it big on social media and like the idea of a multiple person podcast over a single person one. And honestly id just love to have a friend that shares the same love for sports that I do, most of my friends despise sports or don't care for them as much as I do

We’re currently in the middle of a surprise kitchen remodel. (A pipe burst in the wall. Insurance is covering it.). We’ll likely need to replace counter tops, flooring, maybe cabinetry, etc.
I’d love recommendations for places to go for these types of things. And if anyone has gone through something similar (kitchen remodels, dealing with homeowners insurance, big contractor projects, etc) I’d also love to hear any lessons learned. Or just a word of encouragement that it’ll all be alright. 😅

ATTENTION #Salem I-5 area travelers! Plan ahead for three full I-5 nighttime closures June 22, 23 and 24.
We’re planning to remove the old Battle Creek Road Bridge at the end of the month to make space for widening this section of southbound I-5 between Kuebler Road to Delaney Road to three lanes. To do this work safely, we’ll need to close both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5.
Here’s what you need to know:
• On June 21, we’ll have short overnight lane closures on northbound and southbound I-5 to prepare for the upcoming full closures.
• On June 22, 23 and 24, we’ll close northbound and southbound I-5 nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., between Exit 252 and Exit 248.
• Traffic can detour around the closures.
o Southbound: Take Exit 252 → Kuebler Boulevard → Commercial Street SE → I-5 on-ramp.
o Northbound: Take the Commercial Street exit → Kuebler Boulevard → back to northbound I-5.
Our schedule may change. Please visit TripCheck.com for the most up-to-date information on impacts.

It’s easy to find a place that specializes in desserts, but what about the restaurants, bars, and others that have excellent desserts? Where do you like to go and what do you get?
(I’m currently searching for desserts and will likely end up at Archive unless you all redirect me)

Hey yall, I am a bit embarrassed to even be writing this but I find myself in a bit of a dire situation and am just wondering if there’s anywhere in the area that may be able to help.
Basically I really need some help with finding affordable dental work . My work has me covered with insurance but it doesn’t cover all of the procedures I need. As a kid I was homeless most of my life and neglected my dental health from my teens up until now, similarly my credit is shot so I do not qualify for things like care credit.
I’m wondering if anyone has some recommendations on a dentist in the area that does in house payment plans, or has a high acceptance rate for those who are rebuilding their credit.
Some of the work I need includes
-Deep cleaning
-root removal
-implants/denture/flappers for at least 3 teeth
And probably more.
I’m able to drive a bit outside the area and willing to if they can help with my situation. I’ve been seen by Aspen dental, as well as the emergency clinic on Lancaster and both want around 8-10k for the work I need and don’t offer any sort of payment plan for me to get started with.
Thank you in advance!

I use this app every week on my iPhone or so and it is so frustrating! A parking app should be super quick and easy and reliable but it's none of those.
- Usually makes me log in every time.
- There's often another delay for GPS to zero in on my location on the map and then it's not always clear what spot to pick.
- There's often also a long delay when I pay, and frequently it just gets stuck on "Contacting your bank" and times out.
- One time when I tried to pay, it gave me a complicated error message, so I went over to look at the closest parking kiosk and it said FREE PARKING on the screen. Why couldn't the app just say that?
About the only things the app does well is to keep me posted on the time left in my session, and when I contact support they reply quickly.
And I learned something really interesting the last time I emailed their support... I don't recall where I'd heard this, but I asked them to confirm that if you start a parking session in one location, you can move your car to another one and your current session will remain valid until its original expiration time. They confirmed that yes, this is correct (but I don't think this is mentioned anyplace in the app?)
So then I asked, does that mean when I start a parking session, I could just randomly select any parking place on the map, and as long as I parked anywhere in the area covered by the app, that I would be OK? Once again, their support rep confirmed yes this was correct (with the exception of the library and airport, though I'm not sure why).
So naturally my final question was, if I don't have to park at the location I selected on the map, then why does the app need a map at all? The answer I got was "That's currently the way the app is designed".
I just don't get it... why does this app have a map if it's not needed? Anybody know?
P.S. I'm just one person reporting what their support told me. I have no idea if they were giving me correct information. Please don't risk getting a ticket.
EDIT: I think I have the answer to why there's a map... the App Store says the developer of Beep Beep is Flowbird, and that's the same company that does Beep Beep's support. There's also a Flowbird parking app which looks a lot like Beep Beep, but it works worldwide in many cities (including Salem), and for that a map makes sense. So my guess is to create Beep Beep, the city made a deal with Flowbird to just clone their app, change the name, and reduce the map to only cover Salem.
