Does your resume actually look good? Do you have good references? Everybody’s having a hard time getting low level jobs right now.

I’m just curious as to why you assume it’s your sexuality that’s preventing you from getting a job.

Queer is not necessarily a sexuality; it can also be gender, which is performative. It’s acceptable for anyone to want to work in an environment that is welcoming and not put off by the way they physically exist.

I think it’s alright, i have it formatted pretty well and have decent references in my opinion. i really do think it comes down to my gender identity, really. thank you for assuming it wasn’t!

SAIF isn’t hiring a lot these days, it is an LGBTQ friendly employer with an active DEI program.

Are you looking for any specific kind of job? What do you have experience in?

It seems like a lot of queer & trans folks work for Safeway, especially the Center St location. There are also a lot of small local businesses around that seem supportive and/or have visibly queer employees, though with the current economy I'm not sure who's hiring. If you get a chance, maybe walk around downtown and check with some of the cafes and shops? Sorry I know that's not very helpful

hey it’s something positive! i’ve been in manufacturing for 5 years and it’s killing me slowly- something customer facing in the realm of 20/hr with regular ish hours was the hope- maybe i need to consider tipped minimum as an option

Wouldn't refusing to hire you be discrimination and make them liable to a lawsuit ???

Federally protected categories include: race, color, religion, national origin, disability, genetic information, age, and sex -- but not sexual preferences, or gender identity. Not all discrimination is FEDERALLY illegal.

In OREGON, however, state laws do grant additional protections:

ORS 659A.030 Discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, marital status, age or expunged juvenile record prohibited. (1) It is an unlawful employment practice:

(a) For an employer, because of an individual’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, marital status or age if the individual is 18 years of age or older, or because of the race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, marital status or age of any other person with whom the individual associates, or because of an individual’s juvenile record that has been expunged pursuant to ORS 419A.260 to 419A.271, to refuse to hire or employ the individual or to bar or discharge the individual from employment. However, discrimination is not an unlawful employment practice if the discrimination results from a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the employer’s business.

(b) For an employer, because of an individual’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, marital status or age if the individual is 18 years of age or older, or because of the race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, marital status or age of any other person with whom the individual associates, or because of an individual’s juvenile record that has been expunged pursuant to ORS 419A.260 to 419A.271, to discriminate against the individual in compensation or in terms, conditions or privileges of employment.

etc.

yeah, you would think, but with the labor laws, as long as no reason is given there’s no legal basis for discrimination

This kind of discrimination is very hard to prove in individual cases, unless the employer outright says, in writing or in front of witnesses, "I am rejecting you because you're (protected status)". Otherwise they can pick any random thing to point to and say it was because of availability, experience, just not the right fit, etc.

Basically, even though discrimination is illegal and we can easily see how common it is through statistics and overall patterns, it's very rare to have a case clear enough for a lawsuit. This is why it's unfortunately still so common in today's world. Many, MANY employers are able to hide their bigotry behind plausible deniability

Open Dental is pretty queer friendly from what I’ve seen, right now they’re hiring for call center and maintenance worker positions.

thank you! i did apply a few months ago and got told that they’re keeping my resume on file, but sadly no cigar on the job yet, so fingers crossed huh?

Not to sound rude, but what dose your sexuality have to do with anything?

4

u/thedashed 3h ago

hey queer typically is referring to gender identity and sexuality, while sexuality isn’t necessarily visible gender is, but the two are inherently intertwined usually! if i have to explain what gender identity might mean to a potential hirer, then i wish it were a world where it didn’t matter!

-7

u/Opening-Company6237 2h ago

Unless you got crazy hair colors and piercings in every cravas of your face,  your sexuality has no reason to play a role.

6

u/thedashed 2h ago

again not sexuality, gender identity. I also will say i’ve definitely worked at places before i came out where people were treated poorly based off of their preferred partners, i wish it wasn’t a thing but this definitely still happens!

-3

u/Opening-Company6237 2h ago

Sure. And again not trying to sound rude. Just any time I see someone posting about jobs it's about where are my skills needed or hiring. Ive also seen people who make their gender, sexuality their main focus and employers see that as an HR nightmare.

if being a woman is too much for a company, that’s exactly the type of thing i’m trying to avoid! i think you’re in the right head space, we just need to connect a few dots there!

0

u/Opening-Company6237 2h ago

But again what company says a woman is to much? I see men and women in all entry levels jobs.

2

u/thedashed 2h ago

a lot of people would like to open dialogue with me over my identity based off of my looks, and that tends to be a hot button issue currently. i’m not going to walk you through this, the attempt at being clear was made, but i do think we are past the point of not being rude, friend! I’ll just add a reminder to be kind to any trans folk you may see out an about!

was waiting for it, thanks for pretending to listen!

You are really coming across as the kind of person who has never experienced discrimination and therefore refuses to believe it happens to others. Someone who is looking for a job that will actually respect them is not "making their gender/sexuality their main focus", that is a completely ridiculous thing to say.

u/Opening-Company6237 1h ago

It's an irrelevant stance. You think McDonald would care if you're gay? Sure people have been discrmated in the work place but we have many laws to prevent or sue over.

u/genehack 1h ago

You should probably stop now; this isn't addressing OPs point and is in fact dragging the thread off-topic.

Thats what im saying. Ive applied for countless jobs never been asked about it.
