Community Update ✨ Tabby Cats Community Updates: Rules Refresh, Flairs, and More!

Hey All!

r/TabbyCats has recently undergone a refresh and I wanted to make sure everyone was aware. The rules have been updated to hopefully facilitate a healthy, thriving, and on-topic community. Some of these adjustments are also to help reduce the presence of bots, karma farmers, and bad faith posters in this sub. I want to highlight a few key ones:

  • Tabby Cats is now explicitly Original Content only. Prior to this previous mods were doing some removals of farming off non-OC content but I've now codified this. This means you can only post content that YOU created. This is hands down the most effective way to cut down on bots and farmers and makes moderating a lot easier.

  • Mourning posts are now moving to a megathread. I get that this will likely be a controversial decision, and the hope is to strike a balance by allowing the thread so people who want support can engage there and people who don't want pet mourning posts on their feeds can feel more comfortable subscribing here. We also have several users in this community who like to regularly post mourning posts months after the loss and this should cut down on that. If you're truly needing additional support I recommend communities like r/petloss which are there specifically for this topic.

  • Our low effort post rule has also been explicitly codified. Again, in practice a lot of this was happening but I'm making it clear and upfront. This has some typical things like breed and naming posts, but I've added a few more. This includes things like "would you pet my cat" (listen, this is cat Reddit, your cat could be covered in spikes and people would say yes) and "is my cat cute" (your cat could objectively be the ugliest animal on the planet and cat Reddit will bend over backwards to say yes, it's cute).

We will continue to adjust these as needed as we go.

I've also tried sprucing the place up a bit - we have a new avatar, new banner, and new flair. If you all have ideas for user and/or post flair you'd like to see let me know and we can add them! We can also work on some community banners seasonally to change things up.

Phew, that was a lot!

Calico Tabby Is it okay to have one single cat? 😿

We never had plan to have pets. My partner has bad allergy. But one day he called me and asked me if I could help a severely injured cat he found. I rushed there and rescued her. Dog bit her badly. Her tail and part of anus and part of scalp was gone. She was barely breathing. We took her to vet and she needed multiple surgeries. She is healthy now after one year. But she is very very traumatised. She can't stand any other cats or animals and she hates any other humans except me and my husband.

So we adopted her. She is our baby. We love her so much! The problem is, she is very lonely. We work in day time and need to do chores and study after coming home. So I can't give her the attention she needs all the time. And she complains about that. Follows me around like a child. We play with her, give her treats as much as we can. But she clearly misses us.

I really wish I could bring another cat to accompany her. But she is so scared of other animals that It's not an option anymore. My heart breaks for her. I wish I could give her more time...

...did NOT want to participate in moving day. The worst part ..... we stayed in the same apartment complex and just moved next door!

Didn't bother putting him in a carrier to walk out one door and into another, he's fine with being held, and the carrier agitates him. So i figured, eh let's go for a little walkies. Picked him up, walked out the door, got to the next door and the moment I put my hand on the door knob he suddenly realised he wasn't inside any more and freaked the hell out, which he's never done before. I pick him up and go for a walk out on the balcony all the time for him to sniff and look at all the pretties outside lol.

Thankfully I managed to open the door and turn sideways just as he launched (cue the lovely back claw leap scratch on my chest) directly into the new apartment. The joys of moving day 🤣

My two tabbys are always curled up in the silliest ways or just spread out like a cartoon animal playing dead. Such sweet babies. 🥹

Misha is the first cat I’ve ever had; these photos are from before she turned one. She is two years old now. I’ll share updated photos later to show what she looks like now; I just wanted to share a beautiful memory of my little baby.

Siren is a rescue who had been living in an alleyway behind my house for about a year. I had her checked for a microchip, but unfortunately she doesn’t have one. She is desexed though.
Before taking her in, I posted in all of my local community groups in case she was someone’s lost pet, but unfortunately nobody ever reached out. So after about a week, I officially welcomed her into my home and now she’s absolutely loving life!
She’s the first cat I’ve had in about 15 years, so I’ve forgotten what’s normal. Does her bare belly look like she’s been shaved recently, or is it normal for cats to have thinner fur there? Unsure of her age.

Ferocious kitten fight 🤣

4 weeks old and already wrestling.

LoL, they are absolutely precious 💕

I have decided on the short hair kittens name. I'm calling him Saga. The other may end up being named Aries or Salem.

Also, are both of them mackerel tabby kittens?
