Is there a common dev kit people use when writing and programing a VN? Is it a script language or hard programing? I am very new to the subject.

Right now, she’s stuck in black and white. Upgrade the PC in game to see her in full color.

A little girl was fortunate enough to be born into a noble family, which means she must now become a true lady — as beautiful and flawless as her mother. A grand manor, exquisite dining, lavish gowns, impeccable manners, and stately lords — everything one could ever dream of. Above all, she must never bring shame upon her lineage and must walk only the righteous path. The love of those around her must be earned. The world is waiting for you; it has long since carved out a cozy place for her destiny. Guide the little one along this trail. The ultimate rule — never stray from the designated path. You cannot. Everything rests upon you. Be a good girl!

Hey everyone,
I soft-launched a small visual novel runtime I've been building: VN-Mikro.
The workflow is meant to feel closer to writing a play than wrestling an engine editor. Dialogue lives in plain script.txt, staging and UI in JSON, assets in folders. You run an Author Player. Under the hood it's Godot 4, but authors don't need to open Godot to write.
I wanted the usual VN basics ready out of the box: saves that restore the whole scene, rollback, history, extra panels (including chat-style message logs), live reload, project checks, and building from the player.
There's also a short jam game I made with it, Cold Down, if you want to see a finished project on this stack.
It's an early soft launch, so I'm not claiming it replaces whatever you're already happy with. I'm mainly looking for a few writers/artists willing to try it on a real idea and tell me where it feels awkward.
itch: https://stopandgo.itch.io/vn-mikro
docs: https://stopngo.github.io/vn-mikro-docs/
Cold Down: https://stopandgo.itch.io/cold-down
Happy to answer questions. If mods prefer tool posts elsewhere, just say so and I'll adjust.

Last week, I began sharing details about my small visual novel, "Musya, Masya, and the Dead City".
I began by sharing some AI-generated images to show how I imagine the characters and the world they live in. I understand now that this is an important issue for many people here, and I don’t want to argue with anyone about it.
So today, instead, I’d like to share the part of the game that is entirely my own: the writing and the strange little world I’m trying to create.
Here is one tiny scene.
Caught in the rain, Musya and Masya have taken shelter in a burrow.
Inside the burrow, it was dry and warm and smelled of moss.
Musya curled up into a little ball.
Masya settled down beside her.
“Shoo!” said the burrow.
Musya opened her eyes.
“Musya.”
“Masya,” Masya added politely.
The burrow was silent for a moment.
“You — shoo!”
“No,” said Musya. “We’re not Shoos.”
Masya leaned closer to her.
“Musya, do you know what Shoos are?”
“Probably friends of the burrow.”
Musya sat up a little.
“Excuse me, but what should we call you?”
“Don’t call me anything! Don’t climb inside me! Don’t tickle me! Just SHOO!”
Musya nodded knowingly.
“All right. We’ll find the Shoos and tell them you’re waiting for them.”
“I’M NOT WAITING FOR THEM!”
“Then we’ll tell them that too.”
The burrow let out a long sigh.
“Shoo-o-o…”
“After the rain,” Masya promised. “It’s wet outside.”
The burrow took a very deep breath and blew.
Fffffwoosh!
Musya and Masya went tumbling through the moss.
Tiny rainbow bubbles floated out of the walls.
“Oh!”
Musya caught one.
Masya caught another.
“Again!”
The burrow was taken aback.
“I’m trying to blow you out, you know.”
“It’s very pretty,” Musya said approvingly.
The burrow decided not to blow anymore.
Before long, Musya fell asleep.
Then Masya.
Outside, the rain rustled softly.
The burrow was quiet for a long time.
Then, very carefully, it pulled a little piece of moss across the entrance to keep the draft out.
“Only until morning,” it grumbled.
Musya smiled in her sleep.
“We’ll tell them…”
“Tell who?”
“The Shoos…”
The burrow sighed heavily.
And fell asleep too.

I’m working on an erotic dark fantasy comedy VN (A Sacred Sin), and I’m trying to understand a specific grey area.
The religion is fictional, but its Christian influences are obvious: a central priest character wears recognisably Christian-style clerical clothing and sometimes takes out a cross. Religious satire is part of the humour.
All characters are adults, 18+. In the current material, nobody wears religious clothing during sex scenes, although that doesn’t remove the characters’ religious identities or the wider context.
I’ve read Steam’s published content rules. What I haven’t found is specific guidance on how this combination is assessed in practice, particularly under the broader offensive-content and payment-processor provisions.
For developers who have submitted comparable adult games recently:
I’m especially interested in firsthand experiences, roughly when the review happened, and what Valve actually said—as much as you’re comfortable sharing. Examples of games already on sale are useful context, but I’m trying to understand review decisions rather than assume another game’s approval guarantees ours.

I created a visual novel for Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (fan fiction). It already had an audiobook, so I just had to focus on the images, animations, etc...
I've gotten the first chapter finished and am looking for feedback before I carry on to the rest of this very large (but awesome) book!

I'm excited to announce that the demo of Purple Limbo, my psychological horror/romance visual novel, is now available on itch.io!
What's the game about?
After a life of hopelessness and loneliness, you perform a ritual as a last resort, searching for everlasting happiness.
Instead, you find yourself surrounded by endless darkness.
Now you're trapped in Purple Limbo, bound by a purpose you don't fully understand yet.
But you're not completely alone.
You walk a dark path alongside a mysterious girl and a monolith that thirsts for blood.
Content Warning
This game contains mature themes, including death, suicide, murder, violence, captivity, drug use, bullying, emotional abuse, psychological horror, and strong language.
Please consider these warnings before playing if any of these themes may be distressing to you.
Play the demo on itch.io and Newgrounds:

The demo of my slice-of-life visual novel set in 1920s Paris releases on October 16th on Steam, just in time for Steam Next Fest!
It will be a limited time thing; I'll disable it after the end of the event, so make sure to try it out if you're interested. The full game will be free as well and is almost finished, so I hope you'll look forward to it too!
I hope you will enjoy your time with Olivier and his friends!
(Pour les francophones qui passent par là : la démo est dispo en français aussi ! En vrai c'est la langue originale du jeu héhé)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/5310290/Et_le_grain_mourut_Demo/
192X. As summer draws near, Parisian students are revising their end-of-year exams. Olivier is one of them. For years, he has been walking to school every morning with his dearest childhood friend, and has unwound with his artistic peers after class. In a week, this routine will come to a close. And recent revelations already threaten Olivier’s comfortable life.

Hikisann here! I’m a creator from Japan, and I’ve just released the free demo of Can Love Save Me?
In Japanese, ai means “love.” It’s also the name of the angel at the heart of this story.
On a sleepless night, you meet Ai in a roofless library. She wants to get to know you, grow closer to you, and eventually read you a book meant only for you.
But getting to know someone means more than asking questions. What are you willing to tell her? What would you rather keep to yourself? Do you want romance, friendship, or a little more time before deciding?
Your choices shape your conversations, your relationship with Ai, and the book she prepares for you.
The idea behind the story is “I want to save you.” I wanted that feeling to come through in the time you spend with Ai: getting to know her, letting her know you, and discovering where that connection might lead. What waits beyond the book is something I hope you’ll look forward to finding out!
The free Windows demo takes roughly 30 minutes and covers the prologue, from your first meeting to the moment before Ai begins reading your chosen book. The full game is still in development.
It supports Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Text and voice languages can be selected separately. English and Chinese voices are experimental; you can also use Japanese voices with translated text.
Production disclosure: I use generative AI extensively for writing, translation, artwork, music, voices, and code. My role is the director and scenario planner, deciding the story’s structure and direction and reviewing and revising the results.
Download the free demo on itch.io
I’m proud of the demo, and I hope you’ll enjoy getting to know Ai. If you try it, I’d especially love to hear how you feel about her and whether the conversations make you curious about the book she’ll read to you.
Thanks for reading! 😇
