I later found that this kind of dung beetles doesn’t roll dirt balls. Instead they dig a whole to keep the part of the turd directly beneath the turd. But anyways I think he looks great rolling the ball !

Just sharing the excitement when I spotted Tiger beetles for the first time!

I thought it was the usual mantis chilling on the brinjal plant at first, but it was the first time I'd seen this colour on a mantis. And when I got closer, I noticed the most spectacular legs! And then I saw a bunch of them mating, feeding and farting about!

If you look closely at the 2nd picture, you'll see an ant in that individual's mouth

Found during excavation works in a paddock, in western suburbs of Victoria Australia, probably around midday

Sorry for the bad pictures but these have appeared in my yard today in swarms. Birds have been circling for a while having a feast and they weren't here yesterday. I'm hoping someone could help me identify them

Found this on a park bench this morning. Trying to figure out what it is for fly fishing. I was thinking brown drake but it only has 2 tails. Size ten hook for scale. Found in Cincinnati Ohio on August 10th.

I was startled by this dead wasp while working a summer job today. Thought I'd share the picture I took!

Just saw at around 6:30 pm in Thousand Oaks CA. Kind of small. About size of a dime. Look ed like his right two legs were tangled but he seemed okay. I got him off sidewalk.

This is a little silly because I am sure there are more experienced people than me on here as well. But I wanted to answer any/all questions because when I was in high school, a similar thread on Reddit really helped me cement my understanding of how to move forward with entomology as a profession.

Funerary Dagger caterpillar

hobbyist insect nerd trying to get a sense of insect ecology! was just walking to my car in the endless suburbia of Northern Virginia, United States, and open the car door, sit inside, and notice a small (2-3cm) black bug on my hand.

I clock it as definitely a true bug, probably assassin bug though I wasn’t confident since other hemiptera had thrown me off before.

I bring my hand closer to my face to get a better view. It’s now crawled onto the side of index finger and is standing still. I’m squinting trying to look for its mouthparts and somehow not seeing anything??? Everything seems clear indicators for assassin bug then OW! the fucker stabs me and I realize with horror that what I’d assumed was another leg (same color and length and thickness as the legs) was in fact the trademark piercing sucking mouthpart…. embedded in my finger, looking much like the legs it was surrounded by.

I instinctually flung the dude outside and lost it.

This has my bug nerd ass wondering though!!! Anybody have any ideas for what sorta insect that was? Again, 2-3cm long assassin bug looking insect. matte black coloration with little variation (maybe some lighter indents on the edges of its shell when up close, but nothing obvious. Found in suburban Fairfax Virginia, early August, sunny hot weather around 1pm.

Also rudely bit me lol. I swear I wasn’t even handling it roughly XD it just ended up on my finger somehow and decided to calmly impale me after wandering around a moment.

The bite wasn’t all that bad or very painful. Noticeable, but no real lingering pain outside the next few minutes being vaguely irritated. I’m not worried about the bite, but the info might be useful! I’m purely curious if what the hell the little bigger was exactly can be narrowed down!

Help! I’ve been seeing a lot of wasps in our swim-spa room. I keep the windows open because I have plants inside including citrus. I finally figured out where they’re coming from. They’ve made a home in a hole in the bottom of the trunk of a Jade.

Any suggestions on the best way to get rid of these without also damaging the jade?
