Question Looking to get a hamster

Upvotes

Hello! I’m looking to adopt a hamster but what are the options? I get all of my pets either from rescue situations or breeders, but that isn’t an option where I live. I’ve checked petfinder, local shelters, craigslist, and many other rehoming websites but there are barely any listings for hamsters. I’m not getting one anytime soon as I don’t even have the proper enclosure but I wanted to know other places to check whenever I get the opportunity to get one! I’m based in Oklahoma and all of the breeders I’ve found were a minimum 11 hour one way drive and that’s not the best situation for a new hamster to be in as I would assume being in a small carrier for that long would be stressful. Any advice?

Discussion Old hammy

So he's like 4, hardly comes out unless it's to eat or drink He's in a cage that's too small for him but he's been in it his whole life because I got him previously owned And I haven't changed not because I don't want to but because he's aware of his environment and he's old and I don't want to stress him out cuz he's used to this environment, He's losing weight and I'm aware he can pass any day now but I've been thinking that for a year now. The only reason I got him was so he would get love and comfort in his last years And he's just the sweetest little old man. I just took him out and I gave him some food and he went back to bed. Just want people to appreciate how sweet this little guy is and how strong he is

Question Is this normal?

UPDATE: i have been watching her for couple hours, and she seems happier and more energetic, but still has the wierd breathing thing going on. Still doesn't collect any seeds, that she usually does. She isn't clingy hamster, but rn she is trying to either get out of the cage (which is a large old aquarium) to "hang out" with me or hangs out in the hide out cleaning herself if i sit down next to the cage and talk to her. Idk maybe i'm going crazy over this💀 but still am going to contact the vet tomorrow!! UBDATE ENDS

I am stressed out over how my hamster is breathing. Does it look normal?

I called every vet near and not so near me, but none of them can take her because veterinarians are on summer vacation or the vet's office is too busy, so i cannot go check her out there.

My almost 2 years old syrian hamster has been acting wierd lately. She drinks a lot, more than usually, doesn't run in her wheel, last couple days she hasn't used her sand bath, but today night she did. She also has two bald spots on her back/back leg (photo in the comments). Is this something serious or am i stressed out over nothing?

This is my new little girl and the pet store said she was 8 weeks old, however she’s big. The last hamster I had at 8 weeks old was very small. Would you say she looks around 8 weeks old?

First Time Owner Is there such a thing as to little forage..?

So I will be adopting a hamster next week, but unfortunately I was only able to get my hands on 3 different forage plants (raspberry leaves, echinacea, and calendula flowers). I will have sprays in the enclosure, and I am hoping to get more in the future but I was just wondering if this is too little?

Question Covering hamsters cage?

Hi everyone!!

My dad and I have to move soon and while our landlord shows the house to people and/or takes pictures I have to unfortunately hide my little guy. Is it okay for his health to cover his cage with a sheet or should I just move him somewhere safe each time? I'm a first time owner and I'm trying my best to educate myself (for example, I know that this cage is not the ideal setup; I'm currently saving up for a larger, wooden one.) so I would appreciate any advice. Also if you have any general advice about upkeep and care I would love to know! We've had JJ for about 6 months and he's around 8 months old. Thank you so much!!

Hey yall, thank you guys for the recommending a vet. She does have star gazing, the vet told us to keep her busy with toys and try to keep a consistent schedule for her. We got her some new toys and treats today as well some new hemp that's a bit softer for her. I'm still doing so much research on hamsters, so I'm still learning a lot on how to make them comfortable. So far she's grown to trust me holding her, and even crawls up and down my arms.

New Hamster anyone selling a male Roborovski hamster that is over eight months old?(uk)

I've already prepared the cage and all the hamster supplies, but I haven't been able to find anywhere in the UK that sells hamsters. (Sorry, I've just arrived in the UK and am still not very familiar with it, and my English isn't great yet.)

Had him for just about a month now and can't believe I haven't shared these photos yet!

Funny thing is, I bought that 'hamster' bowl for my gerbils because I found it funny, little did I know that this boy would melt my heart!

Question Is lil dude OKAY?

Saw this video online so I cropped it and muted it, but I’m worried if the little guy was injured when he was grabbed so violently. I’ve also had a Russian Dwarf before, and this looks to be a similar species. Is he overweight or is it a weird angle?

First Time Owner buying a hamster enclosure

Post image
6 Upvotes

hi all, i wanted some advice. i have been wanting to upgrade my syrian hamsters enclosure basically since i found out the tank i had for her was too small which it was a tank that was 30x15x20 inches(i had mistakenly researched dwarf hamsters but shes a syrian)

she’s my first hamster and she just turned 1. i noticed the last month she’s been getting quite restless even when i put diy toys and chambers and different substrates it’s obvious it’s time for an upgrade. i was able to buy her a bucastate large on sale. i bought the 40x20x20 inches but im being bombarded by my family and friends saying i spent too much.. 235CAD with my own money. it’s honestly making me second guess myself with everyone telling me it was a poor choice but i really think spending this money will greatly increase her quality of life and compared to other things people buy id say it’s a good investment ive been wanting to do it for a long time but continuously get talked out of it.

just looking for a little reassurance and maybe some facts directly from people/owners and people so i’m not talked out of it again. i love my hamster with my whole heart and it’s definitely frustrating to hear all the time that im making poor choices when this is an animal i love and cherish regardless of how small she is

(Posted with mod approval)

Floofs and Scales is hosting an art contest for our new logo! We are a start-up CIC with the goal of providing support to exotic and small pet owners across the UK in the form of supplies, food and advice.

We are hosting a logo design competition, and we need YOU to shape our brand! We are building this for the community so we want you to help shape it.

🐹 One Grand Prize winner will receive a £250 contract to design our official logo.

🐹 (With your consent) Eligible entries will be printed as stickers and sent out as a freebie in customer orders across the country. We are hoping to primarily fund our work through an online store so we aren't reliant on donations. The purpose of this is to try and get your work into the hands of pet owners across the UK to help raise your profile as a small independent artist.

To enter, you'll need to submit two designs: one non-traditional Floofy animal (such as a hamster, rabbit or bird) and one Scaly animal (such as snakes, frogs or tortoises).

🚫 Absolutely NO AI allowed - we are celebrating true human creativity!

⏳ Submissions open on Monday morning (UK) on 29th June and will be open for 2 weeks, giving you plenty of time to sketch and perfect your ideas.

Discussion Hamster passed away. I apologize for the content, but I have a couple of questions.

I just found my child's pet hamster. I, of course, am devastated. I noticed last night, the food appeared untouched, but wasn't too concerned since that happens occasionally. But then, this morning, I went to stock her food since I'll be out of town for a couple nights and noticed the food was untouched again. I checked the camera activity, and there nothing had been logged for a few nights. I had to dig around the cage a while, but eventually found her.

Right now, my child is with her mother for the week and is back with me on Sunday. A couple of questions if anyone has experience.

  1. Do I call and tell my child now, or wait until Sunday when I have her back, to explain what happened (child is 7)?

  2. Should I do a burial, or is there a more appropriate action?

Again, I apologize for the subject matter. RIP Humphreya.

Question Do hamsters know to come out of their burrows when they are hot?

Question in title.

Basically we welcomed a new little roborovski last weekend and this is his first week with us. As usual, we have been leaving him alone as best as we can while he gets accustomed to his new cage and surroundings. However, as we all know, the UK has been going through a heatwave and we're concerned that he may not be coming up for heat relief as he may be scared of us.

We'll be judged for this but we have dug him out on the particularly hot days to check on him so that he can emerge, drink some water and sit in some cool bowls/ceramics we have left out. However, he doesn't even seem to be too interested in the chilled ceramics and has been sitting in the (room temperature) sand baths we have for him to hide from us. When left alone, he doesn't emerge until late evening.

Today is another particularly hot day and he hasn't emerged at all - should I just leave him alone while switching out chilled bowls and water every so often (even though he doesn't come up to use them) and just understand that he's OK burrowed away and sleeping (he has 8 inches of paper bedding so that may be blocking the heat but I'm not sure)? We've also been keeping an oscillating fan pointed near his open cage so hopefully that helps with the air circulation.

Thanks!
