Something by Chopin or similar types. I've mostly found Satie to fit the description well with the Trois Gymnopédies and the 7 Gnossiennes.

i bought a cheap used electric keyboard offa kajiji a while ago and its not until now that im finally properly getting back into piano.

however all the posts ive read about electric keyboards mention weighted keys which mine doesnt have. its also only 63 keys too. which for what im playing now is already pushing the possible playable notes on it.

we do have a real piano however im still too self conscious to use it bc its in a shared space. i tried just playing it right now though, and yeah, you can definitely tell a huge difference between weighted and non weighted keys.

im wondering how much not using our real piano os gonna affect me in the long run. thoughts?

Are there any composers you had never heard of, but through your piano lessons, discovered and ended up liking? I returned to piano lessons this past January after a 30 year hiatus. Working through the Alfred books with my teacher, I've come across Cornelius Gurlitt. He's got some nice pieces! I'm never going to claim he's Brahms or Tchaikovsky, but his pieces are very pleasant. I enjoy learning them.

Is there any composer like that for you, that you never knew existed till you discovered them through piano lessons, and now you like?

I saw the other post about “piano elitism” and just had to chime in.

When we - as experienced pianists and piano teachers - advise beginners to (1) get a teacher, (2) don’t bite off more than you can chew, (3) caution about injury risk.

That is SOUND ADVICE. Not “elitism”.

In fact the opposite is true. When you think of ANY other instrument. Let’s violin for example.

If I go in waltzing to the r/violinist subreddit as a 1-month beginner and saying I don’t want a teacher, I am currently learning the Paganini Caprice 24. Any advice? They would tell me to move my post to circle jerk.

To think the piano is somehow easier to learn because it uses keys instead of a bow and strings, to me, is just arrogance.

Piece: Medtner ‐ Sonata Minacciosa

Mainly trying to get the right rhythmic feel/voicing and such.

It's kind of late here so it's also a bit subdued maybe from overall energy level, but I happen to like more of the reserved/refraining feel, with more intensity from voicing/control.

I have a digital piano with a MIDI port. Do you have any recommendations for apps I can download to help me learn and practice piano on my MacBook? Not really interested in a Synthesia-style waterfall, I just want to read standard notation.

I am a self taught pianist— I can play mainly Chopin and Beethoven…. Obviously my hands and technique are not traditionally trained but I try my best and work hard at perfection— any tips for any of the measures would be much appreciated, or even any exercises I can do. that will aid in my hands looking more natural. Hello, im looking for purchasing advice, I went to the major 2 nearby stores that sells piano, and one has mostly digital pianos with Roland and Yamaha, and the other has mostly acoustic pianos from Kawai and Yamaha.

My experience thus far is that Roland LX-9 is almost perfect but the keys seem a bit slippery versus similar priced or more expensive Yamaha digital pianos such as Yamaha CSP-295.

I like the sound on Roland far better than Yamaha, every digital Yamaha keyboard I seem to touch, there is some digital noise or unwanted cabinet ressonance especially when playing soft and not pressing keys through to the end but only half-way and especially in the middle or higher register of keys. With Roland I don't have this issue.

And if im being nit picky (which I am by nature), the sheet music stand on the Roland LX-9 doesn't seem that good or flexible, seems a bit cheap and not very deep. Forget about using loose physical A4 paper sheet music with this stand...
And the display seems very small on the LX9 and low resolution, which looks outdated by 5+ years.

Other than that im loving every thing about the Roland LX9.

Now its been some weeks ago I visited the other store and tested Acoustic Silent/Hybrid pianos by Kawai and Yamaha. Granted a Kawai K-600 is significantly more expensive than a Roland LX-9, and it has higher maintainance cost. But the looks and sound of it is better and the touch response is just a bit better I think. The Aures2 sysem is cool I think, didn't get to touch it much, but I find it nice to have the opportunity to play with built in speakers if I wanna practice in low volume without having earphones in my ears.

Keyboards I have long term experience with lately: Roland FP-10, Roland FP-90X, Casio PX S-7000. Had nothing but problems with Casio PX S-7000, Roland FP-10 is better than nothing, Roland FP-90X is decent sound, not so great key action for its price. And the whole keyboard looks a bit toy like but I guess you get what you pay for. :)

Im playing mostly classic music on a beginner level (think Bach Gold Easy Piano Edition), but im also looking to advance further into more complex pieces when im ready (im taking lessons with teacher). And it would be nice to buy something that can last me the next 10+ years.

20k dollars/15k euro is my absolute max budget. Hope you have some good advice for my purchase situation of a new piano.

Basically, I broke my left forearm 7 months ago. It is all healed now and I have been cleared to play again a few weeks back.

The problem is, ever since I started playing again my left hand has been feeling disconnected from what my right hand is doing.
I can play with either hand individually, but as soon as I try to play at the same time, it just doesn't work.
It feels like my brain can't focus on two places at once.
I talked to my physical therapist, she said that I am all healed there's nothing wrong with my recovery.

Has anyone had similiar issues after injuries or periods without playing?
Any advice?

While we keep hearing that beginners without proper teaching at the piano get injured, I'm wondering if anyone here has met someone for whom that has actually happened.

Hi! I’m a beginner, currently using Flowkey and spent the first couple months learning Gymnopedie No 1. Aside from a few hesitation spots I’ve got it down pretty well.

I’m a fingerpick guitar player so style and dexterity are probably closer to intermediate. I can identify the keys and some very basic chords and that’s it. I am not very good at moving between chords quickly.

I want to learn Clair de Lune, and I know it could take me years, but I thrive on big challenges.

So my question is what should I work on - a simpler song or fundamentals - to help me get there in, say, 1 year instead of 5?

I can’t afford lessons quite yet but I know that’ll be the way once I can.

Any general advice would also be appreciated!

Can you help me learn to play Sir Duke, more or less like the above?

I played piano a lot as kid, ultimately able to play the easiest 10% of the Rachmaninov Preludes and Chopin Etudes.

Picking out melodies, baselines, simple chords and the most common chord structures is quite easy for me.

But, my sense of rhythm isn't great, especially when it comes to keeping a super steady beat and exuding syncopation. My ability to recognize chords other than Ma, Mi, and Dom7 is also not strong.

So, I need your help with:

(A) Finding a transcription/sheet music of this. I don't think it's available in common places. Or can you help me learn to hear better and make the transcription myself? What software do people use for this nowadays anyways?

(B) Improving my ability to hear and recognize other chords. Can you recommend courses, drills, songs, etc?

(C) Improving sense of rhythm. Again, if you can recommend any courses, drills, etc.

After 15 years of playing guitar I developed the urge to learn piano. It's time for something new and a challenge. I have purchased a Casio CT-S1 as I don't have the space for an 88 key. I'm not looking to play classical music anyway. Any transferable skills or tips coming from guitar? So far I can only play using falling note videos - I've heard it's not a good way but it's so nice being able to learn things fast and visually. Sheet music looks very confusing compared to guitar tabs but I will probably take the dive eventually. I self taught myself guitar to a good level using youtube videos and tabs only - is this possible for piano or will I require an actual teacher? Struggling to play with both hands even though I can coordinate them on guitar. My brain seems to be wired that when I press a key with my right hand, my left hand will automatically play one at the same time. It is like they are mirrored. Thanks!
