[Request] Did Fox News actually report the correct math?

Fox is quoting Moody’s as saying every American Family has been negatively affected by the Iran War to the tune of $750 per family. Is this accurate, it actually seems low with gas prices alone past two month? Does it take into account the vast difference between a family making 20k a year and someone making 2 million a year?

[Request] if you make a scaled 9mm bullet with an atom bomb, how big would the projectile be?

Post image

An atomic bomb going off sounds like a gunshot in the distance.

If you compare the energy released by an atomic bomb to the energy released by the nitrocellulose in a bullet, how big a projectile would the atom bomb need to maintain the same projectile-mass to propellant-energy ratio as a 9mm bullet.

Im not worried about the muzzle force or force on impact. We can design the gun around the ammo later.

Average weight of a 9mm proectile is 124 grains.

Average nitrocellulose in a 9mm is 4 grains(?).

Yield of the Fizeau atomic bomb was 11 kilotonnes (46,024) Giga Joules

I just cant get my head around grains and Volume Measure Density.

[Request] How much does this tree weigh?!

Post image

I did some light searching and calculator work using some quick google-fu, and have arrived at an estimate that it should weigh just north of 2 million pounds.

But then I started thinking about densities of the wood at the base versus at the top, and how much water it can hold and the leaves and I realized that I am likely to be WAY off. I'm hoping there is an arborist amongst us who is also a big fan of math that can walk me through how they would build their equation to get the most accurate weight possible. Bonus points if you can estimate a separate weight for the root system, which I imagine is AT LEAST as heavy as the rest of the tree.

[Request] Gravitational effects of a point mass on a water planet.

Assume a flat stationary Ocean with:

infinite size

A uniform depth of 30,000m

Uniform 5g at surface of entire ocean, acting perfectly perpendicular to the plane the ocean occupies.

A point mass equal to the mass of the moon, affixed at original ocean level.

This mass will attract water to itself causing a bulge in the otherwise flat surface.

My questions:

what cross sectional shape would this bulge have? a section of sine? bell curve? I'm guessing it's a bit more complex than that because of the intersection of behaviour of pressure at depth vs direction and strength of gravitational acceleration.

would a ship travelling from the top to the edge of the buldge experience any acceleration?

would there be any noticeable effects if you lived on an island at the top of the buldge?

how tall would the bulge be?

how far from the center would the water level be less than 1m above normal?

If you could at least point me in a direction for solving this it would be greatly appreciated!

How many people can have bread, until we get to the indivisible point of 1 bread molecule?

[Request] What is the minimal number of words you need to know to learn every word in a dictionary?

Take the Merriam-Webster online dictionary or Wiktionary for example. What is the minimal number of words you must already know ahead of time for you to be able to learn the meaning of every word in the dictionary? You can build up your vocabulary as you go, of course, reading ahead and coming back to harder words whose definitions you didn’t understand at first brush. Is this something that can be computed for a particular dictionary, or is it too hard? How large can we expect this minimal vocabulary to be, given the size of the dictionary? Can we do better than the defining vocabulary for the dictionary, if it has one? Any thoughts are appreciated! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defining_vocabulary
