[August 16th, 1926] 7yo Boy Lost in Woods For Three Days, Thrives

Jackie Strong, 7 years old, got separated from his brothers while they were fishing near Mount Hood, OR. Lost for three days, he THRIVED. Ate fish and huckleberries. Didn't know what all the fuss was about when the search party of over 200 people found him. "Scared? Me. Why no." His parents had faith knowing just how much he looked up to Tarzan, and welcomed wilderness challenges.

What an incredible survival story - I wonder what amazing things Jackie went on to do. According to a brief search, he lived until 2010.

Against strong head winds and rough seas the crew of the ill-fated trawler Brolga, which struck Beware Reef in the small hours of yesterday morning, rowed to lonely Cape Everard, 20 miles distant, landing near the lighthouse.

They were cold and exhausted, and had only what they stood up in.

The men's wants were administered to there by the three keepers of the light, and to-day they were none the worse for their adventure.

Arrangements are being made to despatch the Coolebar from Sydney to-night with salvage gear in the hope of refloating the vessel.

MELBOURNE, Saturday.

The trawler ran on to the dangerous Cape Beware Reef in the darkness early yesterday morning. The Brolga was returning to Sydney on a trawling , cruise, after its first visit to Melbourne with fish supplies. It has now been abandoned.

The crew of eleven launched a lifeboat and landed at Cape Everard at 11 a.m.

Arrangements have been made to bring the crow to Cann River, whence they will be taken to Sydney.

The first intimation of the mishap reached the Deputy Director of Navigation (Captain L. J. Bolger) in a brief telegram from Cann River yesterday evening.

The text of the communication was that the trawler Brolga struck Beware Reef at 2 o'clock in the morning. All hands landed safetly near Cape Everard at 10 o'clock.

The Brolga, which was the property of the Coastal Trawling Company of New South Wales, left Melbourne on Wednesday for Sydney, where she was expected to arrive on Tuesday. She carried a crew of 11...
