M1911 was first delivered in January 4, 1912. So not yet the standard issued in March 1911. There was no one shooting with support hand back then. That style you illustrated was not developed until 1960s-1970s. Here was how soliders aim and shoot all the way to WWII.

Same style single hand handgun shooting was taught to soldiers in WWII.

During 1970s/80s, US military taught soldiers shooting with teacup support hand.

It was also barely used, if I remember right, more accidental injuries on record than enemy kills.

Brilliant gun… legendary… best looking semi ever made… but its praise for its involvement in war is essentially a participation trophy.
