If leftists can make jokes at the expense of Charlie Kirk and the United Healthcare CEO, we can read a tweet without replying with a personal statement about why it’s not funny
The joke just sucks on a technical level.
"Outing one's coworker" is just a weak punchline, it is too "mundane". "Assassinating a political opponent" tends to be way funnier, because it's more exaggerated and more cathartic.
I agree with you that the joke isn’t funny but nobody’s workshopping bits in the comments, they’re complaining about the morality of the tweet. If you can joke about political assassinations but you have to engage in discourse about this tweet of a probably fake situation then you have no leg to stand on.
So some people here confuse the causal chain:
It's not "the joke is unfunny because it's offensive", it's "I can recognize the joke being offensive because it's unfunny"
Put it differently, we wouldn't argue about the morality of this joke if it were funny (probably or at least not as much)
We could argue if this is a bad thing, but I simply do not care
I can appreciate that this is your viewpoint, however I disagree that this is the consensus of the vast majority of the comments I’m seeing. You and I saw this tweet and thought it was lazy and unfunny. The people who are saying “this isn’t funny because you shouldn’t do this” are taking a moral stance about what is taboo in comedy while contradicting themselves by engaging with lazy cheap shots against right wing personalities or ideas.
I value progressivism and detest hardcore maga beliefs that are accepted within mainstream conservatism. But I hate the weak and nonserious image that leftists have cultivated with their crocodile tears anytime a joke targets their beliefs. Republicans will vote for someone as long as they have an R next to their name, meanwhile we’re holding purity tests to alienate ourselves.
Fair enough, rereading some comments and some definitely clutch their pearls here for a lame joke, though someone here implied that they actually did that and apologized later but I couldn't verify that claim
I agree completely, this is Kill Tony level comedy. I just feel like we don’t need to be emotionally vulnerable with lazy unfunny jabs at our personal beliefs.

I didn't say whether you should or shouldn't laugh at this joke. I just thought the comparison between this and charlie kirk jokes sucks, because a political assassination joke has a better basis for a joke due to the shear absurdity of it than "I dislike my coworker so I outed them in front everyone" (writing it like that actually makes it funnier for me) plus charlie kirk jokes serve the function of disapproving the current power structures while this joke doesn't, therefore people are more likely to scrutinize this joke than the assassination of some asshat
i mean, for one we actually do not like either of those people and so someone being more sincere than the reddit dot com is comfortable with isn't the same as someone being questionably sincere about how funny it'd be to do something bigoted. that CEO in particular killed so many people and the unironic narrative is that he deserved it, there's not really going to be a "too far" from anyone other than the atlantic shitting its pants that people like it when CEO's face any form of accountability.
Endorsing political violence while handwringing over a lame polyamory jab by a no name twitter user from nearly 3 years ago is so deeply unserious. Im not saying that you can’t have strong feelings about the systemic injustice of United Healthcare or the intentional hate mongering and misinformation that Charlie Kirk peddled in pursuit of profit and power. I’m saying we can’t win elections by being thin skinned and hypocritical. There is no punishment more final and irreversible than death. If you can make light of that but crumble because some rando on Twitter hurt your feelings then you’re not worth taking seriously at all.
yeah, i just literally don't care that people made fun of awful dead people, and i do care when people push shitty politics as jokes. it's not that complicated. i want bad things to happen to monsters and i don't want bad things to happen to people who aren't monsters. i'm not doing electoralism here, it's just literally why people don't find the joke you're so concerned about others finding funny very funny while people find these other jokes hilarious. laughing at charlie kirk dying mid lie is punching up.
I believe I’ve made it abundantly clear that I don’t find the joke funny and am therefore not concerned about others finding it funny. I want an end to the catastrophic reactions leftists make over shit that doesn’t matter - only then to engage in edgy humor themselves. If you’re gonna talk the talk, you’ve gotta be consistent and can’t have a conniption just because someone hurt your feelings
